Undercounter service

Why undercounter refrigerators take more abuse than reach-ins, and what that means for service.

Undercounter refrigerators are the workhorses of commercial bars, small kitchens, and mobile food operations. Compact form factor (15 to 30" wide typically), designed to fit under prep counters or behind bar tops. They take more abuse than full-size reach-ins because they live in tight spaces with restricted airflow, often in environments where staff lean on them, slam doors hard during rush, and ambient temps spike during service.

We service all major undercounter refrigerator brands across LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. The premium brand on this list is Perlick, an independent Wisconsin family business since 1917 that dominates bar back-bar refrigeration in upscale hospitality. Other brands we see constantly: True TUC series (commercial undercounter), Hoshizaki commercial undercounter, Krowne, Glastender, Beverage-Air UCR/UCF, Continental SW.

EPA 608 Universal certified plus R-290 hydrocarbon refrigerant certified. BHGS #A49573. BBB A+. 24/7 phone answering. Coastal salt expertise: Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Newport Beach bars and small kitchens make up roughly 30% of our undercounter work. EPA 608 verifiable.

Failure modes

Typical undercounter failures, in order of frequency.

Compact form factor + bar/kitchen environment + restricted airflow drives a specific failure mix that's different from full-size reach-ins. The diagnostic order below is what we run on every undercounter service call.

  1. Condenser fan motor seizure (year 4 to 6, faster on coastal). Most common failure. Compact units have small condensing units with smaller fan motors. Coastal salt plus bar splash environment is brutal on motors. Replacement $260 to $450.
  2. Door gasket compression at hinge side (year 3 to 4). Heavy daily use in bar/kitchen environment. Replacement $180 to $340.
  3. Compressor short-cycling. Tight installation with restricted airflow around the unit causes the condensing unit to overheat. Sometimes installation issue (need to pull unit forward 2 inches), sometimes compressor capacitor.
  4. Refrigerant leak. EPA 608 leak repair before recharge. Compact units use R-134a (older) or R-290 hydrocarbon (newer green refrigerant on Perlick post-2020 and others).
  5. Bar splash damage. Beer, wine, sticky cocktails enter electrical components when poured around the unit. Switch failures, harness corrosion. Cleaning plus sometimes harness replacement.
  6. Drawer slider corrosion (drawer-style undercounters). Perlick HP24 and similar drawer-style units: drawer slides corrode in coastal/humid environments. Replacement.
  7. Evaporator fan motor (year 5 to 7). Smaller motor than reach-ins. Replacement $200 to $380.
  8. Self-closing hinge failure (Perlick, premium models). Self-closing hinges (gravity-assist or spring-assist) help doors seal without staff effort. When they fail, doors don't auto-close, warm air infiltrates. Replacement.
  9. Glass door issues (back-bar variants). Bar back-bar undercounters with glass doors for bottle display. Glass-frame anti-condensation heaters fail at 5 to 8 years (similar to display cases — moisture causes harness corrosion).
  10. Compressor failure (year 8 to 12). Mechanical wear. Compact compressors are typically replaced rather than rebuilt.

Real repairs

Composite stories from the route.

Five undercounter refrigerator jobs from the past 90 days. Models, symptoms, diagnosis, parts, time, total. Names omitted; the technical scenarios are typical of what we see weekly.

Bar in Santa Monica, Perlick HP15S single-door back-bar (7 years, R-134a)

Bottles warming, ambient bar at 78°F. Diagnosed: condenser fan motor seized from coastal salt plus sticky cocktail residue. Replaced fan motor (Perlick OEM, 5-day order initially, then expedited shipping for next-day at customer request). Cleaned condenser coil. Total: $120 first visit plus $290 part plus $180 expedited shipping plus 1 hour return labor = $590.

Restaurant in Marina del Rey, True TUC-48-32 two-section undercounter (9 years)

Temp climbing during service. Diagnosed: refrigerant leak at evap coil. EPA 608 leak repair: pumped down, brazed coil joint, evacuated, recharged R-134a. Total: $120 plus $380 refrigerant plus $580 labor = $1,080.

Hotel bar in Beverly Hills, Perlick HP24DS drawer-style undercounter (5 years)

Drawer wouldn't slide smoothly. Diagnosed: drawer slides corroded from condensation buildup (improper humidity control in the unit). Replaced both drawer slides, addressed underlying condensation by adjusting thermostat slightly higher (43°F was too cold for the bar's actual contents — wine, beer — was creating condensation). Total: $120 plus $340 slides plus $290 labor = $750.

Cocktail bar in West Hollywood, Krowne KR series back-bar (6 years)

Beer warming, bar staff complaining. Diagnosed: door gasket compressed flat at hinge side plus door not closing fully (bartenders had been kicking it shut, broke hinge alignment). Replaced gasket plus realigned hinge. Total: $120 plus $260 plus $290 labor = $670.

Food truck in Pasadena, Beverage-Air UCR27 undercounter (4 years)

Won't cool. Diagnosed: condenser fan motor failed (food truck vibration plus coastal exposure when parked at beach events). Replaced motor. Total: $120 plus $310 plus 1 hour = $530. Food truck operations typically compress equipment service life. Owner planned annual maintenance going forward.

Scope

What we do for commercial undercounters, and what we don't.

We service: all commercial undercounter refrigerator brands and configurations. Single-door, double-door, drawer-style, back-bar with glass doors. Beer coolers, wine refrigerators (commercial spec), sandwich prep undercounter variants. All EPA-permitted refrigerants including R-290 hydrocarbon (we have R-290 certification beyond standard EPA 608 Universal).

We don't do: new undercounter installation (we work with restaurant equipment installers in SoCal and can refer); residential undercounter beverage centers (different product line — see wine cellar repair or residential refrigerator repair); kegerator-only conversion (specialty, but we can refer).

FAQ

Undercounter refrigerator repair questions.

Is Perlick worth the premium price for bar use?

For high-volume bar and hospitality use, yes. Perlick has 7 to 12 year typical service life vs 5 to 8 for mid-tier brands in the same environment. The lifetime construction (stainless cabinet, premium gaskets, self-closing hinges) reduces service intervals significantly. For low-volume use (small office, residential bar), mid-tier brands (Beverage-Air UCR, True TUC) make more financial sense.

Why does my undercounter run warmer than the spec?

Most common cause: tight installation with restricted airflow. Compact units need 2 inches clearance on sides and back for proper condensing unit airflow. If the unit is jammed against cabinetry, the condenser can't cool, the compressor short-cycles, and internal temp climbs. We pull the unit forward, verify clearance, and often that fixes the issue without parts.

Do you service Perlick HP15, HP24, and BBR series?

Yes. Perlick is our most common premium undercounter brand. We have Perlick parts network access for OEM components, including drawer slides for HP24 drawer-style configurations, self-closing hinge kits, and BBR back-bar glass-door anti-condensation heaters.

Can you come out at 2 AM after the bar closes?

Phones answered 24/7. Scheduled dispatch starts 8 AM Mon-Sat. For after-hours emergency dispatch (1 to 7 AM specifically for bar post-close service), call ahead to confirm tech availability. Usually possible with notice.

My food truck refrigerator keeps failing. Why?

Food trucks compress equipment service life because of: (1) constant vibration during driving, (2) frequent ambient temp swings (parking lot 110°F to operation 75°F to off-hours 60°F), (3) limited clearance for condensing unit airflow, (4) coastal and dust exposure depending on event locations. Plan annual preventive service at minimum, often semi-annual for high-use operations.

My undercounter uses R-290. What's that?

R-290 is propane, a hydrocarbon refrigerant used in newer green commercial undercounters (post-2020 Perlick, True, others). Different service procedures than R-134a. Requires R-290 certification beyond standard EPA 608. We have it.

What's your warranty?

90 days parts and labor on every repair. BHGS #A49573 and BBB A+. EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410) plus R-290 certified for newer green-refrigerant units.
