Configurations we service

Every refrigerator type in the SoCal market.

From compact built-ins under $1,200 to integrated panel-ready Sub-Zeros over $20,000, we work the full range. Each configuration has its own failure-mode quirks; our techs know the diagnostic shortcuts for each.

Top-Freezer

The classic budget configuration. Common failure: defrost timer plus evaporator fan. Most cost-effective to repair.

Bottom-Freezer

LG, Whirlpool, GE Profile. Defrost-drain clogs and ice-maker assembly issues are the dominant calls here.

Side-by-Side

Samsung, Whirlpool, KitchenAid. Twin-evaporator setups; freezer-side cooling can fail independently of the fridge side.

French Door

The dominant premium configuration. Samsung and LG twin-cooling units have model-specific ice-maker failures we know cold.

Counter-Depth / Built-In

Sub-Zero, Thermador, Miele, Viking. Integrated units behind cabinet panels need careful access. We use protective trim removal and reinstallation.

Compact / Undercounter

U-Line, True Residential, Marvel, Sub-Zero 24-inch. Tight refrigeration loops; service requires brand-specific tooling.

Smart Refrigerators

Wi-Fi connected Samsung Family Hub, LG ThinQ, GE Profile Connect, Bosch Home Connect. Software faults often masquerade as hardware. We know the diagnostic order.

Outdoor / Patio

Lynx, Hestan, True Outdoor. Marine-grade builds for SoCal patios; gasket and condenser-load failures from heat exposure are the dominant calls.

Refrigerator service

Food spoils in hours, not days. Premium fridges cost more than the rest of the kitchen. We treat both seriously.

A refrigerator stops cooling at 6 AM. Spoiled food, cancelled grocery delivery, family scrambling. Or the ice maker that worked yesterday is dripping water onto the kitchen floor. Or the Sub-Zero that's been the centerpiece of the kitchen for 12 years finally throws an error code. Refrigerator failures hit different from other appliance failures. The food inventory disappears in hours, not days, and most premium kitchens have refrigeration that costs more than the rest of the kitchen combined.

Our techs service refrigerators across LA County, Orange County, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. Every major brand: Sub-Zero (the LA premium standard in Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Hidden Hills, Pacific Palisades), Wolf residential (Sub-Zero Group sister), Thermador (BSH Group), Viking (Middleby), Miele (German premium), KitchenAid (Whirlpool family, the most popular mid-premium), GE Profile / Café / Monogram (Haier-owned since 2016), LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Maytag, Bosch, JennAir, Kenmore.

$89 residential diagnostic visit, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573. BBB A+. Same-day service in most cases. Phones answered 24/7.

We do honest repair-vs-replace recommendations. A 9-year-old mid-tier refrigerator with major compressor failure may not be worth fixing. A 15-year-old Sub-Zero almost always is. The cabinet outlasts components by decades. We do the math with you on-site.

🌡 Southern California Climate Note

SoCal's warm, dry climate (coastal humidity at the beaches, dry heat in the valleys, dust in the high desert) means refrigerator condenser coils accumulate dust and pet hair faster than in cooler regions. A fridge that was cooling fine last winter might struggle this summer not because anything broke, but because the coils are overdue for cleaning. We include a coil inspection with every refrigerator service call.

🔧 Before You Call: 4 Quick Checks

Try these in 10 minutes. They fix maybe 25% of "not cooling" calls before we even dispatch.

  1. Clean the condenser coils. Pull the fridge out, vacuum the coils on the back or bottom (depending on model). If you can write your name in the dust, this is your problem.
  2. Check the door gasket seal. Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out without resistance, the gasket is leaking and the compressor is overworking.
  3. Verify the thermostat setting. Sounds obvious, but kids, cleaning, and curious cats bump dials. Fridge should be 37 to 40°F, freezer 0°F.
  4. Check power and the breaker. Listen for the compressor hum. If silent, check the outlet with another appliance and confirm the breaker isn't tripped.

Top 8 refrigerator failures

What we see most, and what's actually wrong.

1. Refrigerator Not Cooling

The number one refrigerator service call. Causes in order of frequency: condenser coils need cleaning (sometimes DIY-recoverable, but a tech does it faster and diagnoses underlying issues); condenser fan motor failed (year 6 to 10 typical, faster on coastal installs); evaporator fan motor failed (cold air not circulating from freezer to fridge compartment); defrost system stuck (frost building on evaporator coil, restricting airflow); refrigerant leak (rare in residential but happens, EPA 608 leak repair before recharge); compressor mechanical wear (year 12 to 18 typical, the cost-vs-replace decision threshold); control board failure (modern fridges with sophisticated electronics).

Diagnostic with thermometer placement (top vs bottom shelf), refrigerant gauge reading on accessible service ports, visual inspection of coils plus condenser, defrost cycle verification. Typical "not cooling" repair: $250 to $650 depending on cause. Compressor replacement: $800 to $1,400 mid-tier, $1,400 to $2,200 premium brand. See refrigerator not cooling repair.

2. Ice Maker Not Working

Second most common call. Brand-specific patterns matter:

  • Sub-Zero: heater wire in dispenser fails (year 8 to 12), ice maker module replacement.
  • KitchenAid (Whirlpool family): ice maker module, water inlet valve, optical sensor.
  • Samsung: documented design issues across multiple class actions. Flap mechanism, drain freezing, ice clumping. We know the recurring issues and address them.
  • LG: linear compressor models had broader ice maker reliability issues. We know which model years.
  • GE Profile / Monogram: ice maker module replacement.
  • Viking: less common but reliable when working. Premium ice maker components.

See ice maker repair for details.

3. Water Dispenser / Water Leaking

Water dispenser issues or active leaks. Filter expired (most common, every 6 months replacement, more often in hard water areas of San Fernando Valley and Inland Empire), water inlet valve failure (year 5 to 8), water line frozen in fridge wall (defrost issue), dispenser actuator wear, defrost drain blocked (water on floor, clear drain $200 to $300 typical), ice maker water line leak.

4. Door Seal / Gasket Failure

Gasket compressed flat (year 5 to 10) or torn. Door not sealing means warm air infiltration, fridge runs constantly, energy bill rises, interior temp drift. Replacement is straightforward when the gasket part is available for the model. See door seal repair.

5. Freezer Working But Fridge Warm

Classic damper-failure pattern on single-evaporator fridges (most modern designs). Cold air generates in freezer evaporator, damper actuator transfers it to the fridge compartment. Damper failure means freezer cold, fridge warm. Repair: damper actuator replacement, sometimes evaporator fan motor.

6. Excessive Noise

Loud running, humming, knocking, vibration. Causes: condenser fan motor bearings worn, evaporator fan ice contact (defrost issue), compressor mounting feet degraded, normal refrigerant flow noise heightened by aging compressor, inverter compressor humming (LG linear compressors specifically).

7. Water Leaking Inside / Floor

Defrost drain blocked is the most common cause (clear drain $200 to $300). Other causes: drain pan cracked, water line connection leak, ice maker leak. Diagnosis with visual inspection plus tracing the water source.

8. Display Panel / Control Board / Smart Features

Modern refrigerators have sophisticated electronics. Touchscreen issues (Samsung Family Hub), WiFi connectivity (LG ThinQ, GE Profile, Bosch Home Connect), error codes on digital displays, smart features failing. We diagnose hardware issues and replace boards when needed. Software/firmware issues we identify and refer to manufacturer support when appropriate.

Failure-mode sub-services

Detailed diagnostic walkthroughs by symptom.

Each sub-page covers diagnostic sequence, top causes by frequency, brand-specific patterns, and pricing for that specific failure mode.

Honest framework

Repair vs replace: the math depends on three variables.

This is the question every refrigerator owner asks. The honest answer depends on price tier, failure mode, and operational context.

1. Original Price Tier

  • Mid-tier ($800 to $2,500): Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE base models, LG mid-tier, Samsung mid-tier. Cabinet construction 8 to 12 year design life. Major compressor failure at year 8+ often means replacement makes more sense (compressor replacement $800 to $1,400 vs new fridge $1,200 to $2,000).
  • Premium ($3,000 to $8,000): KitchenAid, GE Profile / Café, LG signature, Samsung premium, Bosch. Cabinet construction 12 to 18 year design life. Most repairs make sense through year 12 to 15. Replacement cost $4,000 to $7,000+ means repair almost always pencils out for major components.
  • Ultra-premium ($8,000 to $15,000+): Sub-Zero, Wolf residential, Thermador, Viking, Miele, Monogram. Cabinet construction 20 to 25+ year design life. Replacement cost $10,000 to $25,000+ means repair is the dominant strategy through year 20+. We see Sub-Zeros routinely at year 18 to 22 still operating great after multi-thousand-dollar repair investment.

2. Failure Mode

  • Easy repairs ($150 to $500): door gaskets, water filters, water inlet valves, defrost timer, simple component replacements. Repair almost always.
  • Mid-tier repairs ($500 to $1,200): fan motors, ice maker modules, defrost boards, control boards. Repair if fridge is mid-tier age 6 to 9, premium age 8 to 13, or ultra-premium any age.
  • Major repairs ($1,200 to $2,500+): compressor, evaporator, sealed system work with refrigerant, full electronic control system replacement. Replace-vs-repair decision based on price tier plus age.

3. Operational Context

  • New kitchen remodel coming in 2 to 3 years? Replace now with new fridge.
  • Cabinet built around the existing fridge dimensions (especially built-in Sub-Zero)? Repair almost always. Replacement requires custom cabinet work $5,000+ on top of new fridge cost.
  • Family with allergies or medical conditions sensitive to food spoilage? Lean toward repair with warranty coverage.
  • Vacation home or low-use installation? Often replace at major failure.

Our role: we diagnose, quote both repair and approximate replacement scenarios, give you the math. You decide. We don't push repairs on equipment that doesn't make sense to fix.

Real repairs

Composite stories from the route.

Five refrigerator jobs from the past 90 days. Models, symptoms, diagnosis, parts, time, total. Names omitted; the technical scenarios are typical of what we see weekly.

Bel Air, Sub-Zero 736TR built-in 36-inch all-refrigerator, 13 years old, R-134a

Homeowner reported temp drifting upward over a week, food at 44 to 46°F instead of 38°F. Diagnosed: condenser fan motor seizing intermittently (heat-cycle related). Replaced fan motor (Sub-Zero OEM via authorized service network). Cleaned condenser coils thoroughly while there. Total: $89 diagnostic waived plus $445 part plus $290 labor = $735. 13-year repair vs $14,000+ replacement (built-in cabinet would also need refit). Owner thanked us for clear math.

Beverly Hills, Samsung RF28HMEDBSR French door, 5 years old, R-600a

Ice maker not making ice, water on freezer floor. Diagnosed: ice maker drain frozen (documented Samsung design issue affecting this model class) plus damper actuator stuck. Defrosted ice maker drain, replaced damper actuator. Documented Samsung class-action eligibility for owner's records. Total: $89 plus $290 part plus $180 labor = $559. Owner appreciated practitioner-level honesty about brand-specific patterns.

Pasadena, KitchenAid KRFC400ESS 36-inch French door, 7 years old, R-134a

Fridge warm, freezer cold (classic damper failure). Diagnosed: damper actuator failed plus evaporator fan motor showing wear (cascading failure typical at the 7-year mark). Replaced both in single visit. Total: $89 plus $345 parts plus $290 labor = $724. 7-year repair on a premium brand makes sense. KitchenAid expected service life 12 to 15 years.

Manhattan Beach, LG LRMVS3006S 30 cu ft InstaView, 4 years old, R-600a, linear compressor

Temp climbing, suspected compressor issue (LG linear compressor service history known). Diagnostic confirmed: compressor mechanical issue within LG's extended warranty for linear compressors on specific model years. Documented warranty claim, coordinated with LG warranty service for compressor replacement. Total: $89 diagnostic plus warranty processing assistance = $89 (warranty covered compressor and labor). Owner saved $1,400 they would have paid otherwise.

Pacific Palisades, Sub-Zero 648PROG built-in 48-inch pro-style with glass door, 18 years old, R-134a

Multiple cascading issues at 18 years: door gasket compressed flat, condenser fan motor bearings worn, ice maker module end-of-life. Owner asked replace-vs-repair. Replacement Sub-Zero Pro 48 = $24,000+ plus custom cabinet adjustments = $30,000+ total. Repair quote $1,800. Approved repair, replaced all three components in single visit. 18-year-old Sub-Zero now ready for another 5 to 7 years easily. Total: $89 plus $980 parts plus $830 labor = $1,899.

FAQ

Refrigerator repair questions.

How fast can you come for a refrigerator emergency?

Same-day across LA, Orange, and Ventura in most cases. Phones answered 24/7. Dispatch scheduling 8 AM to 8 PM Mon-Sat. Most central LA calls see same-day arrival within 2 to 4 hours. Outer service areas (Riverside, San Bernardino) typically next-day. No emergency surcharge.

How much does a refrigerator repair cost?

$89 diagnostic visit, waived if you proceed with repair. Typical repairs: door gasket $200 to $380, ice maker module $290 to $540, fan motor $290 to $520, control board $480 to $820, compressor $800 to $2,200 depending on brand. Multi-component repairs at 10+ years run $900 to $2,400. Written quote before any work begins.

Should I repair my refrigerator or buy a new one?

Depends on three things: original price tier, failure mode, and your operational context. Mid-tier refrigerator (under $2,500) with major compressor failure at year 8+ usually pencils out for replacement. Ultra-premium (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, Viking, Miele) almost always pencils out for repair through year 20+ because the cabinet outlasts components by decades and replacement cost runs $10,000 to $25,000+. We do the math with you on-site honestly.

Do you service Sub-Zero, KitchenAid, LG, Samsung, GE, Wolf, Thermador, Viking, Bosch?

Yes, all major brands. We have authorized service relationships for premium brands (Sub-Zero, Thermador) and recurring-issue knowledge for documented mid-tier patterns (Samsung ice makers, LG linear compressors, KitchenAid wear failures).

My Samsung refrigerator has ice maker problems. Is that the brand?

Documented design issues affect specific Samsung model years and series. Multiple class actions have been filed, some current. Common issues: drain freezing, ice clumping, flap mechanism failures. We know which models are affected and how to address them. We document warranty and class-action eligibility for your records.

What's R-600a refrigerant?

R-600a (isobutane) is the hydrocarbon refrigerant used in newer green refrigerator models (post-2018-2020 transition in residential). Different service procedures than R-134a. R-600a is flammable and requires specific handling: smaller charges, different leak detection, separate recovery procedure. Most appliance shops don't have R-600a training. We do.

My fridge water line is frozen. Can I just thaw it?

Sometimes. But often the freeze indicates an underlying issue: defrost system not maintaining freezer compartment temp evenly, ice maker drain line blocked causing a freezing chain reaction, or water line routed improperly causing recurring freezing. Quick thaw addresses the symptom but may recur. We diagnose root cause on one visit.

Can my appliance repair handyman fix premium brand refrigerators?

Sub-Zero, Wolf residential, Thermador, Viking, and Miele have specific service requirements, OEM-only parts, and authorized-only warranty processing. General handyman service on these brands often violates warranty, uses incorrect parts, and misdiagnoses brand-specific issues. Premium brands need premium service. We're authorized for most of these brands.
