01 Β· What we service

A range is the freestanding or slide-in combo unit, cooktop on top, oven below.

Some people call it a stove. Some people use the words interchangeably. For repair purposes, the distinction matters: a range is one chassis, one set of controls, one warranty. We service the whole thing, both the burners on top and the oven below, on the same dispatch.

If your unit is a cooktop dropped into a counter with a separate built-in wall oven, that's two different appliances and two different service pages: cooktop repair and wall oven repair. If you searched "stove repair" because that's the word you grew up with, see stove repair, the underlying service is the same scope. If you have an induction cooktop specifically (drop-in or part of a slide-in range), see induction cooktop repair for the induction-specific diagnostic.

Our techs service ranges across LA County, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. Same-day in most cases. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. No emergency surcharge. BHGS #A49573, EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410), BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7.

02 Β· Three architectures, three repair playbooks

Gas, electric, induction. Pricing tier matters too.

Gas ranges (most common LA)

Natural-gas connection at the wall, surface burners on top, gas oven below. Surface igniters fire each burner; the oven uses a hot-surface igniter or pilot system depending on vintage. Most LA homes built before 2015 are gas. Failure modes concentrate at the igniters (year 4 to 7), oven temperature sensors, and gas valves on year 10+ units.

Electric ranges (rentals, smaller homes, Inland)

Coil-top ranges (Frigidaire FFEF, GE JBP, older Whirlpool) and glass-top radiant ranges (newer Samsung, LG, Whirlpool). Bake and broil elements in the oven, coil or radiant elements on the cooktop. Element burnout at year 7 to 10 is the dominant failure mode, plus oven temperature sensor drift and control board issues at year 9 to 13.

Induction ranges (rising in coastal Westside)

Magnetic-coil cooktop, separate resistive oven below. Slide-in induction is the more common form factor in LA: Bosch HEI series, Samsung NZ slide-in, GE Profile induction. Requires magnetic-bottom cookware. Repair scope splits cleanly: induction-specific failures concentrate at the generator board (the inverter that drives the coils, $780 to $1,200 replacement); oven side fails like any electric oven (bake/broil element, sensor, board).

Pro-style ranges ($8,000 to $15,000+ tier)

Wolf DF and GR series, Viking 7 and Tuscany, Thermador Pro Grand and Professional, BlueStar Platinum and RNB, Capital Culinarian and Connoisseurian. We see these in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Hidden Hills kitchens. Pro-style ranges are designed for 18 to 25 year service lives, the math almost always favors repair through year 18, sometimes longer. Different parts catalogs from mid-market mass-production lines.

Mid-market ranges ($800 to $2,500 tier)

GE Profile, Samsung NX, LG LRG, Whirlpool WFG, KitchenAid KFGG, JennAir JGRP, Maytag MGR, Frigidaire FFGF, Amana AGR. Most LA rentals and standard new builds. Year 7 to 10 is the typical replace threshold once a major repair (control board, gas valve) crosses 50% of replacement cost.

03 Β· Common range failures we see in LA

Ten failure modes account for nearly every range service call.

  1. Surface igniter failure (gas, year 4 to 7). Click but no flame on one or more burners. Per-igniter replacement $200 to $340 with labor.
  2. Spark module failure (gas, year 8 to 12). No click on any burner. Single-module replacement covers all burners. $260 to $420.
  3. Gas valve sticking (gas, year 10+). Burner stuck partially open or partially closed. $440 to $680 part plus labor.
  4. Bake element burnout (electric, year 7 to 10). Visible burn-through or element breaks the resistance test. $200 to $360 part with labor.
  5. Broil element burnout (electric). Same failure mode as bake element, less frequently used so it lasts longer. $200 to $360.
  6. Oven temperature sensor drift (year 5 to 8). Sensor reports cold while element runs constantly, or vice versa. $200 to $340.
  7. Convection fan motor (year 8 to 12). Motor seizes or bearings wear, fan stops or rattles. $340 to $540.
  8. Control board failure (year 9 to 13 mid-market, year 12 to 16 pro-style). Display dead, error codes cascade, oven won't reach setpoint. Mid-market boards $440 to $720, pro-style Wolf/Viking/Thermador boards $680 to $1,100.
  9. Door gasket compression and hinge sag. Heat leaks at door, oven runs hotter than setpoint to compensate. Gasket plus hinge service $200 to $380.
  10. Induction generator board (induction-specific, any age but more often year 4 to 8). Cooktop dead while oven still works. $780 to $1,200 replacement.

04 Β· Recent jobs

Real repair stories from the last few weeks.

Composite examples; model numbers, ages, and prices are accurate to typical scope.

Pasadena Β· GE Profile PGB940SEJSS gas range, 9 years old

Two surface burners not igniting, oven running hot. Diagnosed: front-left igniter failed, oven temperature sensor drifted 35Β°F low (oven compensating with longer element-on time). Replaced both. Total: $89 plus $260 igniter plus $260 sensor plus 1 hour = $385.

Beverly Hills Β· Wolf DF366 dual-fuel pro-range, 11 years old

Display intermittent, error code on oven side, no spark on right cooktop zones. Diagnosed: control board partial failure plus spark module fault. Replaced both, calibrated oven temperature post-board-replacement. Total: $89 plus $720 board plus $310 spark module plus 2 hours = $1,180. Owner did the math against $9,500 replacement Wolf DF, repair was the obvious call.

Marina del Rey Β· Samsung NX58H5600SS gas range, 6 years old

Oven running cold, breaker tripping intermittently. Diagnosed: bake element shorted to ground (year-6 typical for Samsung NX), oven temp sensor reading off. Replaced bake element and sensor. Total: $89 plus $215 element plus $135 sensor plus 1 hour = $440.

West Hollywood Β· Bosch HEI8054U slide-in induction range, 4 years old

All four induction zones dead, oven still functional. Diagnosed: induction generator board failure (premature on a 4-year unit, but Bosch HEI generator boards have a known year 3 to 5 weak run). Replaced generator board, retested all zones with magnetic test cookware. Total: $89 plus $890 board plus 1.5 hours = $980.

Calabasas Β· Whirlpool WFG320M0BS gas range, 8 years old

Right-rear burner stuck partially open even with knob in off position. Diagnosed: gas valve seized at right-rear position, year-8 typical on Whirlpool WFG. Replaced gas valve, leak-tested all four positions, verified shutoff. Total: $89 plus $440 valve plus 1.5 hours = $560.

05 Β· Brands we service

Twelve residential range brands cover most LA installs.

Pro-style tier ($8,000 to $15,000+): Wolf (DF dual-fuel and GR all-gas), Viking (7 Series, Tuscany), Thermador (Pro Grand, Professional), plus BlueStar (Platinum and RNB) and Capital (Culinarian, Connoisseurian) which we service without dedicated brand pages.

Premium tier ($2,500 to $5,000): JennAir (Whirlpool family, designer-grade), Bosch (HEI induction, HGI gas, dual-fuel slide-in, Bosch does make freestanding ranges for the US market).

Mid-market tier ($800 to $2,500): GE (Profile, CafΓ©, Monogram), Samsung (NX gas, NE electric, NZ slide-in induction), LG (LRG gas, LRE electric), Whirlpool (WFG gas, WFE electric), Maytag (MGR gas, MER electric), Frigidaire (FFGF gas, FFEF coil-top, FFEH glass-top), Amana (AGR gas, AER electric, value tier of Whirlpool family).

KitchenAid sells ranges on the Whirlpool platform but doesn't have a dedicated brand page yet, we service them under Whirlpool-platform diagnostic procedures.

06 Β· Repair vs replace

Honest framing by tier.

Mid-market ($800 to $2,500 GE/Samsung/LG/Whirlpool/Maytag/Frigidaire/Amana): repair through year 8 to 10 makes sense. Beyond year 10, if a major repair (control board, gas valve, induction generator) crosses 50% of replacement cost, replace is the call. We tell you the math at diagnostic.

Premium ($2,500 to $5,000 Bosch/JennAir): repair through year 13 to 15. These units are built for it.

Pro-style ($8,000 to $15,000+ Wolf/Viking/Thermador/BlueStar/Capital): repair through year 18 to 20+. A $700 control board on a 12-year-old Wolf range is an obvious repair, not a replace conversation. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Pro-style ranges are designed for service life, that's what you paid the premium for.

09 Β· FAQ

Range repair, common questions.

What's the difference between a range, a stove, and a cooktop?

Range is the freestanding or slide-in combo unit: cooktop on top, oven below, all in one chassis. Stove is the colloquial term, often used loosely to mean either the cooktop part or the whole appliance. Cooktop is the dedicated cooking surface that drops into a counter with the oven separately mounted in the wall. Different repair scope. Range repair is on this page; cooktop-only on /services/cooktop-repair/, oven-only (built-in wall oven) on /services/wall-oven-repair/.

My gas range burner won't ignite, gas valve or igniter?

Almost always the surface igniter, not the gas valve. Igniters wear at year 4 to 7 typical, you hear the click but no flame. $200 to $340 part plus labor. Gas valve failures are rarer (year 10+) and present differently: gas smell, valve sticking, weak flame. We diagnose with the multimeter at the igniter terminals first.

My electric range oven won't heat, element or thermostat?

Bake element burnout is the most common (year 7 to 10 typical), the element looks burned through visually or breaks the resistance test. Less common: oven temperature sensor drift (sensor reports cold while element runs constantly, or vice versa). Replacement bake element $200 to $360, sensor $200 to $340.

My induction range cooktop went dead but the oven still works, what failed?

Almost certainly the induction generator board (the inverter that drives the magnetic coils). Ovens on induction ranges run on standard resistive elements, totally separate from the induction electronics. Generator board failure $780 to $1,200 part. Bosch HEI series and Samsung NZ slide-in induction are the most common in LA, we carry parts.

Pro-style range (Wolf, Viking, Thermador, BlueStar, Capital), worth repairing at year 12?

Almost always yes. These ranges cost $8,000 to $15,000+ new and are designed for 18 to 25 year service lives with proper maintenance. A $700 control board on a 12-year-old Wolf DF range that costs $9,500 to replace is an obvious repair, not a replace conversation. We service all the pro-style brands and tell you straight when the math actually does shift toward replacement (very rare before year 18).

Do you service Bosch freestanding ranges?

Yes. Bosch makes freestanding ranges for the US market: gas, dual-fuel, slide-in induction (HEI series most common). Some older industry references suggest Bosch is built-in only, that's outdated. We see Bosch freestanding ranges in modern LA kitchens, especially the slide-in induction in Westside coastal homes that converted to electric for energy compliance.

How fast can you come for a range repair?
