02 · Three architectures, three repair playbooks
Natural-gas connection at the wall, surface burners on top, gas oven below. Surface igniters fire each burner; the oven uses a hot-surface igniter or pilot system depending on vintage. Most LA homes built before 2015 are gas. Failure modes concentrate at the igniters (year 4 to 7), oven temperature sensors, and gas valves on year 10+ units.
Coil-top ranges (Frigidaire FFEF, GE JBP, older Whirlpool) and glass-top radiant ranges (newer Samsung, LG, Whirlpool). Bake and broil elements in the oven, coil or radiant elements on the cooktop. Element burnout at year 7 to 10 is the dominant failure mode, plus oven temperature sensor drift and control board issues at year 9 to 13.
Magnetic-coil cooktop, separate resistive oven below. Slide-in induction is the more common form factor in LA: Bosch HEI series, Samsung NZ slide-in, GE Profile induction. Requires magnetic-bottom cookware. Repair scope splits cleanly: induction-specific failures concentrate at the generator board (the inverter that drives the coils, $780 to $1,200 replacement); oven side fails like any electric oven (bake/broil element, sensor, board).
Wolf DF and GR series, Viking 7 and Tuscany, Thermador Pro Grand and Professional, BlueStar Platinum and RNB, Capital Culinarian and Connoisseurian. Two surface burners not igniting, oven running hot. Diagnosed: front-left igniter failed, oven temperature sensor drifted 35°F low (oven compensating with longer element-on time). Replaced both. Total: $89 plus $260 igniter plus $260 sensor plus 1 hour = $385.
Display intermittent, error code on oven side, no spark on right cooktop zones. Diagnosed: control board partial failure plus spark module fault. All four induction zones dead, oven still functional. Diagnosed: induction generator board failure (premature on a 4-year unit, but Bosch HEI generator boards have a known year 3 to 5 weak run). Replaced generator board, retested all zones with magnetic test cookware. Total: $89 plus $890 board plus 1.5 hours = $980.
Right-rear burner stuck partially open even with knob in off position. Diagnosed: gas valve seized at right-rear position, year-8 typical on Whirlpool WFG. Replaced gas valve, leak-tested all four positions, verified shutoff. Total: $89 plus $440 valve plus 1.5 hours = $560.

Mid-market ($800 to $2,500 GE/Samsung/LG/Whirlpool/Maytag/Frigidaire/Amana): repair through year 8 to 10 makes sense. Beyond year 10, if a major repair (control board, gas valve, induction generator) crosses 50% of replacement cost, replace is the call. We tell you the math at diagnostic.
Premium ($2,500 to $5,000 Bosch/JennAir): repair through year 13 to 15. These units are built for it.
Pro-style ($8,000 to $15,000+ Wolf/Viking/Thermador/BlueStar/Capital): repair through year 18 to 20+. A $700 control board on a 12-year-old Wolf range is an obvious repair, not a replace conversation. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Pro-style ranges are designed for service life, that's what you paid the premium for.

Range is the freestanding or slide-in combo unit: cooktop on top, oven below, all in one chassis. Stove is the colloquial term, often used loosely to mean either the cooktop part or the whole appliance. Cooktop is the dedicated cooking surface that drops into a counter with the oven separately mounted in the wall. Different repair scope. Almost always the surface igniter, not the gas valve. Igniters wear at year 4 to 7 typical, you hear the click but no flame. $200 to $340 part plus labor. Gas valve failures are rarer (year 10+) and present differently: gas smell, valve sticking, weak flame. We diagnose with the multimeter at the igniter terminals first.
Bake element burnout is the most common (year 7 to 10 typical), the element looks burned through visually or breaks the resistance test. Less common: oven temperature sensor drift (sensor reports cold while element runs constantly, or vice versa). Replacement bake element $200 to $360, sensor $200 to $340.
Almost certainly the induction generator board (the inverter that drives the magnetic coils). Ovens on induction ranges run on standard resistive elements, totally separate from the induction electronics. Generator board failure $780 to $1,200 part. Bosch HEI series and Samsung NZ slide-in induction are the most common in LA, we carry parts.
