How Our Pricing Works

Garbage disposals are one of the least expensive appliance repairs in Los Angeles — and one of the most commonly misdiagnosed. A humming disposal that won't turn is almost always a jammed grinding plate, not a failed motor. A disposal that won't start at all often has a tripped reset button or a blown fuse from the switch circuit. Neither requires a replacement part.

We diagnose first. For a humming or jammed disposal, we assess whether the impeller can be freed (most of the time it can), whether the motor windings are intact, and whether the unit is worth repairing vs. replacing. InSinkErator and Moen disposals under 8 years old are almost always worth repairing. Older units where the motor has seized are evaluated honestly — sometimes a new unit makes more sense.

🔧 Try this before calling — the reset button

If your disposal is completely dead with no humming sound: look under the sink on the bottom of the disposal unit for a small red or black button — the thermal overload reset. Press it firmly until you feel a click. Then try the switch. This resolves about 30% of 'dead disposal' calls at no cost. If it still doesn't start after the reset, call us.

Labor Rates by Repair Type — Los Angeles 2026

What garbage disposal repair cost labor costs in Los Angeles

All prices are labor only. Parts quoted separately after diagnosis. $89 diagnostic applied to repair total when you approve the work.

Repair TypeLabor RangeWhat’s Typically Involved
Jammed / humming MOST COMMON
Hums when switched on but drum won't turn
$89–$160
Usually no parts
Impeller jam clearing using hex key method and/or tongs. We clear the jam, test full rotation, run water test. Most common call — often the lowest total of any appliance repair.
Completely dead / no response
No sound, no response when switched on
$120–$200
+ switch or unit if failed
Thermal overload reset (free fix first), GFCI outlet check, switch replacement, wiring. We check every free fix before diagnosing a component failure.
Leaking from bottom seal
Water draining under sink from bottom of unit
$120–$220
+ unit (bottom seal = replace)
Bottom seal failure means internal motor seal has failed — unit replacement is usually the fix. We quote replacement labor separately.
Leaking from top / sink flange
Water leaking where disposal meets sink drain
$120–$200
+ flange putty
Sink flange re-sealing, mounting ring tightening. Often a simple plumber's putty fix.
Leaking from side / dishwasher port
Water from side connection
$120–$180
+ hose clamp if needed
Dishwasher drain connection tightening or hose replacement. Quick fix on most units.
Slow grinding / poor performance
Disposal runs but grinds poorly
$120–$200
Usually no parts
Impeller cleaning, blades dulled by LA hard water minerals, test with ice cubes. We assess whether the unit is past its useful life honestly.
Disposal replacement (labor)
Replacement installation — unit provided
$120–$200
Unit cost separate
Removal of old unit, installation of new unit, connection to drain and dishwasher line, leak test. Labor only — unit quoted separately.
Diagnostic fee
Service call + full diagnosis
$89
Applied to repair
Applied to labor total. Includes reset button check, GFCI test, jam assessment, and leak check.

All prices are labor only. Parts quoted separately. Quote before we start; invoice matches the quote. 90-day warranty on parts and labor.

Appliance-side vs. Plumbing-side

What our prices cover — and what belongs to a plumber

Garbage disposal repair straddles two service categories in LA: appliance repair (motor, switch, reset, impeller, electrical) and plumbing (drain line, pipe connections, sewer backup). Our prices above are appliance-side only. Plumbing-side work is honestly out of our scope.

What our $89–$260 labor bands cover (appliance-side): jammed impeller + humming-not-spinning diagnostic + thermal overload reset + wall switch + GFCI circuit + motor replacement + worn seal (bottom / flange / dishwasher port) + impeller plate replacement + jam clearing + grinding chamber cleaning + descaling for LA hard-water mineral buildup.

What a plumber handles (out of our scope): drain line clogs downstream of the disposal + P-trap and drain pipe connections + sewer line backup + water supply lines + original drain rough-in work + complex sink-flange corrosion requiring drain reconfiguration.

When we arrive and diagnose a plumbing-side issue, we'll tell you plainly before charging anything beyond the $89 diagnostic — and in most cases, if the issue is entirely plumbing-scope (water backing up from multiple drains, no disposal symptom at all), we'll let you know on the phone before we dispatch. Plumbing rates in LA run $150–$350/hour for most drain work vs. our $89–$260 labor range — different service, different cost structure.

Scope boundary — quick reference

Call us (appliance): humming, jammed, won't start, reset keeps tripping, motor burned out, impeller broken, bottom-seal leak. Call a plumber (plumbing): water backing up from sinks that don't have a disposal, drain line fully clogged below disposal, sink drain slow on multiple fixtures.

Cost by HP Tier

Pricing by disposal size in LA kitchens

Labor rates vary slightly with HP tier — bigger motors and heavier-duty units take more time to service. Parts pricing scales with HP class. Most LA installs run 1/2 HP; luxury kitchens run 3/4 HP and up.

HP TierLabor RangeWhere You See It
1/3 HP
Apartment / condo installs — light duty
$89–$180
Lower-cost parts
WeHo high-rise + DTLA lofts + studio / 1-bedroom kitchens. Pushed harder than spec in active kitchens → earlier burnout.
1/2 HP MOST COMMON
Standard LA single-family / townhouse
$89–$220
Mid-range parts
Most common LA install. Single-family mid-tier, typical townhouse kitchen, standard apartment-grade. 8–12 year service life with normal use.
3/4 HP LUXURY
Luxury / heavy-use kitchens
$120–$260
Higher-cost parts
Bel Air + Beverly Hills + Pacific Palisades custom. Culver City family-luxury. Better tolerance for bones, fibrous vegetables, avocado scraps (still no pits). Motor + impeller cost slightly more than 1/2 HP.
1 HP ULTRA
Specialty / commercial-grade residential
$140–$280
Specialty parts
Home-chef kitchens + ultra-custom luxury builds. Rare in LA but present in cooking-focused residential. Parts sometimes require special order; specialty service consideration.

All bands include $89 diagnostic applied toward the repair total when you approve the work. Parts quoted separately.

Brand Routing

How brand badges affect pricing — or don't

Disposals in LA run a narrower brand field than most appliances. Most secondary-badge units are InSinkErator chassis underneath, which keeps parts availability strong and pricing consistent across brand labels.

InSinkErator (Emerson Racine WI) and Waste King (Anaheim CA — LA-local) dominate LA installs. KitchenAid + Whirlpool + GE disposals are typically InSinkErator-OEM'd with different badges; our prices above apply the same way across these secondary brands because the internals are usually shared. Moen disposals (Fort Madison IA plumbing-fixture brand) use their own platform but parts are readily sourced through LA distributors — same pricing tier.

Commercial/foodservice brands (Waste Maid + Salvajor + Red Lion) are NOT residential scope. If you have a commercial disposal in a restaurant or commercial-kitchen setting, different service category with different electrical + health-department coding — we don't service commercial disposals at this time.

For the full brand context including HP sizing and continuous-feed vs. batch-feed architecture, see our garbage disposal repair service page with full brand-index and architecture detail.
