01, About This Service
Most dryer repairs are straightforward. The vent usually isn't.
Dryers fail in predictable ways. A thermal fuse blows and the heat stops. A drum belt snaps and the drum won't turn. The door switch fails and the machine won't start. The idler pulley wears out and it starts squealing. Our technicians carry these parts on the van for the brands they see most across SoCal, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Miele, Bosch, Speed Queen, and can complete most repairs the same visit.
What's less predictable is the vent. A clogged dryer vent is one of the leading causes of house fires in the US, and across SoCal, from West Hollywood high-rise stacked closets to Newport Beach laundry alcoves to Thousand Oaks utility rooms with long flex runs to Riverside County mobile-home installations, the failure modes vary, but lint buildup is universal. Lint accumulates faster in a short, kinked duct. The dryer runs hotter. The thermal fuse trips. And the symptom that sends people our way, clothes not drying properly, or taking two cycles, is usually the vent, not the dryer itself.
We include a dryer vent inspection on every repair call across all 5 counties. Not a visual glance, an actual airflow check. If the vent needs cleaning, we do it. If the duct is kinked or damaged, we tell you before we leave.
According to NFPA data, dryers cause roughly 16,000 home fires annually in the US, and lint buildup is the cause in the majority of those. In SoCal condos and apartments where the dryer vents through a closet wall or a long flexible duct, annual vent cleaning isn't optional. It's the difference between a dryer that works and one that becomes a hazard. We offer standalone dryer vent cleaning if you just need that service, call and ask.
If your dryer takes two or three cycles to dry a normal load, the dryer itself is probably fine. Check the lint screen first, it should be cleared before every load. If that's clean, the vent duct is almost certainly the issue. A partially clogged vent restricts airflow and cuts drying efficiency dramatically. We see this constantly across SoCal apartments and condos.
Try these in 15 minutes, they fix maybe 30% of "no heat" / "takes too long" calls before we even dispatch.
- Clean the lint screen, every load. Most "won't dry" calls trace back here. If you can't see through the screen, that's your problem.
- Deep-clean the lint trap quarterly. Pull the screen out, vacuum the slot. A surprising amount of lint gets past the screen and accumulates in the housing.
- Check the exterior vent flap. Should open easily when the dryer runs. Stuck flaps mean buildup at the cap or in the duct.
- Inspect the flex duct behind the dryer. Look for kinks, crushing, disconnections. Replace damaged flex with rigid aluminum if you can.
- Level the machine. Excessive vibration usually means a leg loosened or the machine walked. Adjust feet, lock the nuts; bubble level should sit dead center.
02, Dryer Types We Service
Every dryer configuration in the SoCal market
Vented, ventless, gas, electric, heat pump, condenser, stackable, commercial, each has its own failure-mode quirks. Our technicians know the diagnostic shortcuts for each.
Vented Electric Dryer
The standard configuration. 240V heating element, exhaust to exterior. Common failure: thermal fuse + heating element.
Vented Gas Dryer
Igniter-and-valve heat with exterior exhaust. Common failure: igniter weakening and gas valve coil failure.
Heat Pump Dryer
Miele T1, Bosch 800 Series, LG WashTower ventless. Closed refrigerant loop, no exterior vent. Heat pump module + condenser fan service.
Condenser Dryer
Ventless dryer that condenses moisture into a tank or drain. Common in renovated homes where new ducting isn't feasible.
Stackable Dryer
Dominant in WeHo, Newport Beach, Pasadena conversions. Tight clearance + short kinked vent runs = faster lint buildup.
Washer-Dryer Combo
Single-cabinet wash + dry unit (LG WashTower combos, Equator, Splendide). Compact RV / studio installations.
Compact Dryer
120V plug-in compact dryers (Bosch 24-inch, Miele Compact). Slower drying cycle, smaller drum, condenser-based.
Commercial Dryer
Speed Queen, Huebsch, Maytag commercial, for laundromats, multi-family buildings, hotel laundry. Commercial-tier diagnostic ($120) applies.
03, Gas & Electric Dryers
We repair both, and know where they differ
Gas and electric dryers share many components but fail differently. Our technicians diagnose correctly the first time because they know the difference.
Electric Dryer Repair
Electric dryers heat with a coiled heating element powered directly from a 240V circuit. When something goes wrong with heating, it's almost always one of a small set of components.
- Heating element, burns out over time, no heat at all
- Thermal fuse, trips when dryer overheats, usually from blocked vent
- High-limit thermostat, cuts heat before it reaches dangerous temperatures
- Cycling thermostat, regulates operating temperature
- Drum belt, idler pulley, drum rollers, mechanical failures causing noise or stopped drum
- Door switch, machine won't run with door open, fails over time
Gas Dryer Repair
Gas dryers use a burner ignited by an igniter and controlled by gas valve coils and a flame sensor. The mechanical components are identical to electric dryers, the heat source is different.
- Igniter, glows to ignite the gas, fails gradually (dryer starts then goes cold)
- Gas valve coils (solenoids), hold the valve open during drying cycle
- Flame sensor (radiant sensor), detects igniter heat to open gas valve
- Thermal fuse, same safety role as in electric models
- Drum belt, idler pulley, drum rollers, identical to electric failures
- Door switch, identical to electric failure mode
04, Dryer Vent & Fire Safety
The part of dryer repair most companies skip
We include a vent inspection on every dryer call because the vent is frequently the cause, and always a safety concern in SoCal's housing stock.
Why the vent matters more in SoCal than most regions
Most homes and apartments across Southern California have a dryer vent that exits through an interior wall, a closet ceiling, or a short exterior run. In dense housing, WeHo, Newport Beach condos, Pasadena bungalow conversions, it's common to find dryers venting through flexible aluminum duct that's been kinked, compressed, or partially disconnected behind the machine. Lint builds up where airflow slows. Heat concentrates where air can't escape.
A properly functioning dryer vent should push hot, moist air out of the drum and out of the building in a straight, unobstructed run. When it can't do that, due to lint buildup, a crushed flex duct, or a vent cap clogged with debris, the dryer compensates by running longer and hotter. The thermal fuse trips. Clothes don't dry. And in the worst cases, the lint ignites.
05, Common Dryer Problems
What our technicians fix most often
No Heat (Electric)
Heating element failure or blown thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device, once it trips, the dryer won't heat until it's replaced. But replacing just the fuse without finding what caused it to blow (usually a clogged vent) means it blows again in weeks. We fix the fuse and the cause.
No Heat (Gas)
On a gas dryer that starts but goes cold after a few minutes, the igniter or gas valve coils are the most likely culprit. The igniter glows hot enough to open the gas valve, when it weakens, the valve never opens and the heat stops. Technicians often misdiagnose this as a thermal fuse. We test both.
Won't Start
Door switch failure is the most common cause, the dryer won't run unless it confirms the door is fully closed. A failed start switch, blown thermal fuse, or in some cases a faulty drive motor can also prevent starting. We carry door switches and start switches for the major brands.
Drum Not Turning
The drum belt is a long, flat belt that wraps around the drum and is driven by the motor through an idler pulley. When it snaps, the motor runs but the drum sits still. This is one of the most satisfying repairs, usually about 45 minutes and the machine is back to normal.
Squealing or Grinding Noise
A high-pitched squeal during tumbling is almost always the idler pulley, the spring-loaded pulley that keeps tension on the drum belt. Grinding or thumping means worn drum rollers or drum glides. These are common on any dryer that's run for 5+ years.
Overheating
A dryer that runs extremely hot, to the point where clothes come out scorching or the cabinet is uncomfortably hot to touch, is a safety issue. Almost always a blocked vent, but can also be a failed cycling thermostat that isn't regulating temperature correctly. Don't ignore this one.
Takes Too Long to Dry
Reduced airflow from a clogged vent is the cause in the majority of these calls. Before concluding it's a heater issue, we check the vent, because cleaning the vent resolves the problem and costs significantly less than a heating element replacement on a unit that wasn't actually broken.
Heat Pump Dryer Issues
Miele T1, Bosch 800 Series, LG ventless, heat pump dryers don't fail like vented ones. Common issues: clogged condenser (needs cleaning), heat pump module failure, sensor errors. We carry the diagnostic tooling and have parts access through authorized distributors.
Error Codes (Smart Dryers)
Modern dryers from Samsung, LG, Miele, and Electrolux display error codes that point to specific failure modes. Our technicians are current on the diagnostic codes, these codes shorten diagnosis time and reduce guesswork significantly.

07, Recent Repairs
What our technicians fixed recently
"Starts, heats for a few minutes, then goes cold mid-cycle"
Textbook gas valve coil failure on an LG gas dryer. The igniter was intact and the initial flame lit, but the secondary gas valve coil had failed, so once the igniter cooled down the valve closed and the heat stopped. This gets misdiagnosed as a thermal fuse more often than it should. A multimeter test on the coils makes it clear.
"Squealing noise getting louder every week"
Worn drum bearing on a Miele T1, these are condensation dryers with a heat pump, no external vent required, which is why they're popular in renovated Pasadena craftsmans where running a new duct isn't feasible. The drum bearing wear was gradual but had reached the point where it was audible from the next room.
"Dryer runs but no heat, been like this for a week"
Blown thermal fuse, classic presentation on a Samsung electric stackable. Customer had been re-running loads twice hoping it would fix itself. The fuse was the symptom; the vent was the cause. The dryer was in a hall closet with a 12-foot flexible duct run that had partially collapsed behind the drywall shelf above the washer.
"Loud banging sound on every rotation"
Worn drum rollers, on this Whirlpool the rear drum support rollers had worn flat on one side, creating a thumping impact with each rotation. Common on a dryer that's run for 8+ years without the rollers being replaced. Technically it'll keep running for a while, but the flat spot gets worse and eventually the roller disintegrates into the drum.

09, Repair or Replace?
When does it make sense to fix it vs buy new?
A $700 vented dryer with a $400 control board is borderline. A $4,000 Miele T1 heat pump with a $400 sensor is an obvious repair. Here's the rubric our technicians actually use.
Miele · Bosch · Thermador · Electrolux Pro · Speed Queen
Built for 15-20+ year service lives. Replacement runs $1,800-$5,000+. Even a $700 control board on a 12-year-old Miele T1 is the right call, drum, bearings, motor, heat pump module all have another decade in them.
- Heat pump module replacement: yes, even at $700-$1,200
- Drum bearing / glides: always worth it
- Door gasket / sensor: always worth it
Samsung · LG · Whirlpool · Maytag · GE · Frigidaire
Mid-market vented dryers have an honest 8-12 year design life. Past that, parts are still available but the rest of the unit is aging in parallel.
- Under 8 years AND repair under $300 → repair
- Over 10 years AND repair over $400 → consider replacing
- Drum or motor failure on 10+ year unit → strongly consider replacing
- Multiple failures in one visit → almost always replace
10, Why Same Day Appliance Repair
What matters on a dryer call
We fix the cause, not just the fuse
A thermal fuse blows because something made the dryer overheat, usually a clogged vent. Replacing the fuse without addressing the vent means you're calling again in three months. We check the vent on every dryer call, every time.
Gas, electric, heat pump, condenser
Each technology requires a different parts inventory and diagnostic approach. Our technicians are current on all four, gas igniter / valve coils for vented gas, heat pump modules for Miele T1 and Bosch 800, sensor diagnostics for ventless condensers.
Parts on the van for first-visit fix
Thermal fuses, heating elements, drum belts, idler pulleys, door switches, drum rollers, for Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Miele, Bosch, and Speed Queen specifically. The majority of dryer repairs are completed same visit.
Honest about what's worth fixing
A dryer motor replacement on a 15-year-old basic model may not make financial sense. We tell you that before writing a repair order. If the numbers don't work for you, we explain why and don't push a repair that isn't worth the cost.
11, Frequently Asked Questions
Dryer repair, what people ask us
How much does dryer repair cost?
Our diagnostic fee is $89, applied to the repair once you approve the work. Most dryer repairs run between $120 and $300. A thermal fuse or door switch replacement is toward the lower end. Heating element, motor, or control board replacements on premium brands like Miele or Thermador run higher. We give you a full written estimate before any work begins.
Which areas of Southern California do you cover?
All five counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside. We dispatch from 8 service territories, West Hollywood (HQ), Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Thousand Oaks, Irvine, Rancho Cucamonga, and Temecula, so the technician on your call is coming from the closest one. Same-day is our standard.
My dryer runs but produces no heat, what's wrong?
On an electric dryer, a blown thermal fuse or failed heating element are the two most common causes. The thermal fuse blows for a reason, usually a clogged vent. We replace the fuse and check the vent before leaving, because a fuse replaced without clearing the vent will blow again within weeks. On a gas dryer, no heat usually means the igniter, gas valve coils, or thermal fuse.
Is a clogged dryer vent a fire hazard?
Yes, dryer fires are one of the leading causes of house fires in the US, and lint buildup in the vent duct is the primary reason. A clogged vent traps heat, forces the dryer to run longer, and creates conditions where lint can ignite. In SoCal condos and apartments with long or kinked duct runs, this risk is higher. We include a vent inspection with every dryer service call.
Do you repair gas dryers?
Yes. Gas and electric dryers are both standard for us. Gas dryer repairs involve the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve coils, and thermal fuse, components our technicians carry parts for. We do not work on the gas supply line itself, but everything from the dryer side of the connection is within our scope.
Do you repair heat pump and condenser (ventless) dryers?
Yes. Heat pump dryers (Miele T1, Bosch 800 Series, LG WashTower ventless) and condenser dryers are increasingly common in renovated SoCal homes where running a new vent isn't feasible. They use a closed refrigerant loop or condensation system instead of an external vent. We carry parts and have the diagnostic tooling for both, including the heat pump module on Miele T1 units.
Can you repair my dryer the same day?
Yes. Dryer repairs are one of our most straightforward same-day jobs, the failure modes are well-defined and the parts are compact. We carry thermal fuses, heating elements, drum belts, and idler pulleys for the brands we see most often. Call before noon and we can typically be there the same afternoon.
My dryer takes two or three cycles to dry clothes, is that a vent issue?
Almost certainly yes. Clothes that won't dry in one cycle are the clearest symptom of restricted airflow, either a clogged lint screen, a partially blocked vent duct, or a kinked flexible duct behind the machine. The dryer itself may be working fine. We check the vent system first because it's the most common cause and the cheapest fix.
Do you repair stackable dryers in apartments and condos?
Yes. Stacked dryer-over-washer configurations in laundry closets are one of the most common setups we work on. The vent run is often shorter and more constricted than in a standalone unit, which makes lint buildup faster. We come prepared for the clearance constraints and always check the vent duct condition on stackable calls.
When does it make sense to repair vs replace a dryer?
On a basic $700 vented dryer over 10 years old, a $400 control board replacement is borderline, replacing usually wins. On a $4,000 Miele T1 heat pump, even a $400 sensor is an obvious repair (these are built for 15-20 year service lives). Mid-market gas/electric dryers (Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE) follow the 50% rule, repair under half the replacement cost, replace over.
