01, About This Service

Before we diagnose a broken part, we check the filter.

A clogged grease filter is the most common reason a SoCal homeowner calls us about a "broken" range hood, from a Pasadena family kitchen to a Newport Beach panel-ready Wolf to a Thousand Oaks suburban Zephyr to a Riverside Inland-Empire Broan. A filter that hasn't been cleaned in three months can restrict airflow by 50% or more, the fan runs, the motor is fine, but the hood barely pulls air because nothing can get through the filter. We check the filter before concluding anything else is wrong. In many cases that's the whole call.

The second thing we check for across SoCal kitchens specifically: CFM-to-BTU mismatch. Southern California has more Wolf, Thermador, and BlueStar professional ranges per household than almost anywhere in the country. A Wolf range with 30,000–60,000 BTU burners requires significantly more ventilation capacity than a standard residential range hood provides. When a hood "doesn't seem to work" over a high-BTU professional range, the hood may be functioning correctly, it's just undersized for the job. That's not a repair, it's a replacement or upgrade conversation, and we'll have it honestly.

When there is an actual mechanical failure, fan motor seized, blower wheel unbalanced with grease buildup, control board failed, lights dead, we carry parts for the brands common across SoCal and can usually complete same-visit.

🧹 Clean Your Filter First

If your hood seems weak but the fan is running, pull out the metal mesh grease filter and hold it up to the light. If you can't see through it, cleaning it may restore full performance without any repair needed. Most metal filters can go in the dishwasher on the hottest cycle. Charcoal filters on ductless hoods can't be cleaned, they need replacement every 3–6 months. We carry both types.

02, Hood Types We Service

Every range hood configuration in SoCal kitchens

Mounting style, venting type, and brand all affect how we diagnose and access the unit. We come prepared for each configuration.

Under-Cabinet

Under-Cabinet Hoods

Most common in standard kitchens and apartments. Mounted beneath upper cabinets. Usually vented through the cabinet above or directly through the wall. Common in SoCal's older housing stock and renovated condos.

Wall-Mounted

Wall-Mounted Chimney Hoods

Decorative stainless or custom-panel chimney hoods mounted on the wall above the range. Popular in renovated kitchens across Westside LA. Higher-end models from Zephyr, Vent-A-Hood, Hestan, and Wolf.

Island

Island / Ceiling Hoods

Suspended from the ceiling over an island or peninsula cooktop. Require ceiling duct routing. Common in open-plan LA kitchens with island cooktops. Generally higher CFM requirements than wall-mounted units.

Insert

Insert / Built-In Hoods

The ventilation unit is concealed inside custom cabinetry, only the grille and controls are visible. Common in high-end kitchens where the hood is integrated into the cabinetry design. Brands: Wolf, Miele, Thermador, Best.

Vented

Vented (Ducted) Hoods

Exhausts air to the exterior through ductwork. Far more effective than recirculating, removes smoke, moisture, heat, and odors entirely. Required for high-BTU professional ranges. The correct choice for serious cooking.

Ventless

Ventless / Recirculating Hoods

Filters air through grease and charcoal filters, then returns it to the kitchen. The only option in many apartments without duct access. Charcoal filters must be replaced every 3–6 months, not cleanable. We carry replacements.

03, Common Problems

What our technicians fix most often

Fan Not Working / No Suction

Check the grease filter first, a saturated filter can reduce airflow dramatically. If the filter is clean and the fan still doesn't pull air, the fan motor has failed. On multi-speed hoods, individual speed settings can fail independently, one speed works, others don't.

Loud Rattling or Vibration

A blower wheel caked with grease becomes unbalanced and vibrates the entire hood. Cleaning the blower wheel, a separate component from the motor, often resolves the noise without replacing anything. If noise persists after cleaning, the motor bearings are failing.

Grinding or Squealing Noise

Fan motor bearing failure. The motor continues to run but with increasing noise as the bearings degrade. Left unaddressed, the motor eventually seizes. We carry replacement motors for the major brands we service most across SoCal.

Lights Not Working

Usually a burned-out bulb, a failed light socket, or a loose wiring connection. On LED range hoods with integrated lighting, the LED board itself can fail. We carry replacement bulbs and sockets for the common brands. LED board replacement on premium hoods requires sourcing OEM components.

Control Panel / Buttons Not Responding

A failed control board or a membrane switch panel that's degraded. On touchscreen hoods (Zephyr, Broan Elite), the capacitive touch layer can fail. We test the switch panel and wiring before recommending a full board replacement, which is more expensive.

Hood Completely Dead

Check the circuit breaker first, range hoods are often on a dedicated circuit. A blown thermal fuse inside the hood (triggered by excessive grease buildup causing heat) can also cut all power. A completely dead hood on an intact circuit usually has a failed control board or power supply component.

Failure-mode sub-services

Detailed diagnostic walkthroughs by symptom.

Each sub-page covers diagnostic sequence, top causes by frequency, brand-specific patterns, and pricing for that specific failure mode.

  • Range hood not venting — ducted vs ductless diagnostic, Title 24 makeup air, pre-1990 LA ductwork mismatch
  • Light not working — halogen DIY, LED retrofit value-prop, Wolf/Thermador 2-3 week sourcing
  • Fan noise — 25% mounting-screws resolution, coastal damper rattle, bearing wear timeline
  • Filter issues — grease/baffle/charcoal types, customer DIY education, marine layer rust pattern

04, Pro Ranges & CFM

Why your hood may not be broken, it may just be undersized

LA has more professional-grade ranges per home than almost any other city. This creates a specific situation most repair companies don't address: the hood is working but it was never adequate for the range beneath it.

🔥 High-BTU Ranges & Ventilation

A Wolf range at 60,000 BTU needs a very different hood than a standard range

Standard residential range hoods are typically rated at 400–600 CFM. A Wolf, Thermador, or BlueStar professional range with six burners running full can generate 30,000–60,000+ BTU of heat and combustion byproducts. The general rule of thumb is 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU, meaning a 60,000 BTU range needs 600 CFM at minimum, and ideally more when accounting for duct resistance and filter restriction.

Many LA homes have premium pro ranges installed under standard consumer hoods, either because the kitchen was renovated incrementally, or because the hood was selected for aesthetics rather than performance. When a homeowner calls us saying their range hood "doesn't work" over their Wolf, the first question we ask is what CFM the hood is rated for versus what the range requires. If the hood is mechanically sound but undersized, that's honest information worth having before spending money on parts that won't solve the problem.

Standard range (30K BTU)300 CFM minimum, standard residential hoods usually adequate
Pro range (60K BTU)600 CFM minimum, most consumer hoods are undersized for this
Full pro (90K+ BTU)900+ CFM, requires commercial-grade or dedicated high-CFM unit
Duct size matters tooA 6" duct restricts a 600 CFM motor, 8–10" duct needed for full performance
Filter restrictionA dirty filter reduces effective CFM by 30–50% regardless of motor power
Our assessmentWe evaluate CFM rating and duct sizing on every pro-range hood call

05a, Brand-Specific Repair Pages

Range hood repair by brand, we maintain a page per brand

Each brand has its own factory parts chain, matched-range integration, and service quirks. We maintain dedicated repair pages for the LA brands we actually see most, with model lines, parts-lead-time, and per-brand pricing specific to that brand's service economics.

Luxury pro-style & built-in

Premium & specialty

Mass-market, Broan OEM + family brands

Broan OEM cross-fit

Broan is the dominant US range hood OEM and private-labels chassis for many mass-market brands. If you have a Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Maytag, or GE branded hood, the underlying motor, blower wheel, and housing are often Broan-built, which means shared service parts across that whole set of consumer brands. Our Broan parts stock covers a wider install base than the brand name on the front might suggest.

05b, SoCal Kitchen Context

Range hood repair across SoCal's distinct kitchen markets

Southern California has four distinct kitchen ventilation markets, and they cluster geographically across our 5-county service area. Each has a different brand profile and install pattern. We work across all four.

Luxury custom

Bel Air · Beverly Hills · Pacific Palisades · Newport Coast · Pasadena estates

Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Miele, La Cornue, Gaggenau, Hestan architect-specified installs. Matched-range-and-hood luxury kitchen as architectural element. Flush-integrated Gaggenau 400 Series ceiling hoods; Wolf Pro Wall 48–60 inch; Sub-Zero Group coordinated suites. Common across LA luxury, OC coast, and SFV/Conejo Valley estate enclaves.

Designer-modern

West Hollywood · Silver Lake · Venice · Costa Mesa · Laguna Beach

Zephyr San Francisco-design specialty hoods, Italian pro-style (Bertazzoni, Fulgor Milano, ILVE), and contemporary stainless + glass island hoods. Designer-specified aesthetic over brand hierarchy. Common in condo and architect-designed single-family renovations from Eastside LA to OC's design-forward beach cities.

Condo / apartment

Santa Monica · Westwood · DTLA · Irvine · Anaheim apartments

Ductless/recirculating hoods (Broan, Vent-A-Hood, Samsung over-the-range microwave combos) because the building doesn't have a usable vent path. Charcoal filter lifecycle service is the common call, filters every 3–6 months, not cleanable. Dominates dense urban + master-planned community condo stock across all 5 counties.

Heritage + transitional

Hancock Park · Pasadena · South Pas · Old Towne Orange · Riverside historic district

AGA cast-iron + La Cornue CornuFé British/French heritage in remodeled pre-war kitchens; Bertazzoni and ILVE Italian pro-style in transitional kitchens with period cabinetry. Enamel-matched trim and brass-accent parts run longer factory lead times from Europe.

05c, Matched-Range Integration

Hood and range are often one coordinated system

On most luxury installs the hood is not a standalone appliance, it's coordinated to the range below it, by the same manufacturer, with shared control logic. That affects both what breaks and how we diagnose.

Auto-coupling (Miele Con@ctivity, Samsung SmartThings, LG ThinQ, SKS)

Modern luxury brands couple hood speed to range burner use via Bluetooth or WiFi. When the "hood doesn't auto-start with the range anymore" call comes in, the first check is firmware and pairing, often a reset fixes it without any hardware replacement. When firmware isn't the issue, it's the pairing module on either the hood or the range side.

Sub-Zero Group coordinated parts (Wolf + Sub-Zero + Cove)

Wolf hood + Wolf range + Sub-Zero refrigeration routes through the same Sub-Zero Group Madison WI factory parts chain. When a Wolf hood part doesn't have stock, sometimes a Sub-Zero Group technician update lists a cross-reference part with stock, we check before telling a customer we can't source.

BSH family (Thermador + Bosch + Gaggenau)

Thermador, Bosch, and Gaggenau all route through BSH Irvine CA for US parts, so LA is effectively LA-local parts for all three. Some motor and LED components share across Bosch and entry-Thermador hoods; Gaggenau 400 Series Vario modular parts are brand-specific and don't cross-fit.

Whirlpool-family (Whirlpool + Maytag + KitchenAid + Jenn-Air)

Four brand names, one parts chain through Whirlpool's Benton Harbor MI network. A Maytag hood part number and a Whirlpool equivalent will often be the same physical part with different labels, useful when one has stock and the other doesn't. Jenn-Air downdraft mechanisms are the exception, brand-specific parts with longer lead times.

Haier-family (GE + GE Profile + GE Cafe + GE Monogram)

The GE tier hierarchy (mass-market → Profile premium → Cafe customizable → Monogram ultra-luxury) all routes through GE Appliances Louisville KY under Haier parentage. Different series use different control platforms, Monogram Statement Collection has brand-specific parts; Cafe and Profile share more.

LG-family (LG + LG Studio + Signature Kitchen Suite)

LG's three-tier residential stack, LG mass-market, LG Studio premium, SKS ultra-luxury, all manufactured in Huntsville AL since 2019. Motor and LED components share across the tiers; control-board firmware and aesthetic trim are tier-specific. SKS-labeled parts are distinct from LG Studio equivalents.

06, Recent Repairs

What our technicians actually fixed recently

Brentwood (LA County) · Vent-A-Hood Wall Chimney Hood

"Fan barely working, almost no suction even on high"

Severely clogged grease filter plus a partially seized blower wheel. The filter hadn't been cleaned in over a year, it was coated with solidified grease and nearly opaque. The reduced airflow had also caused grease to build up on the blower wheel itself, adding weight and imbalance. The motor was intact and fully functional.

Removed and deep-cleaned both grease filters (soaked in hot water and degreaser, not dishwasher-safe on this model). Removed the blower wheel assembly and cleaned grease buildup from all blades. Reinstalled and tested, full suction restored on all three speeds. Motor replaced was not needed. Advised customer on 2-month cleaning cycle given the cooking volume in this kitchen.
Beverly Hills (LA County) · Zephyr AK7500BS Island Hood

"Makes a horrible grinding sound, started about a month ago"

Fan motor bearing failure on a Zephyr island hood, the grinding sound was coming from the motor itself, audible from the adjacent living room. The motor had been running with failing bearings for some time before the noise became loud enough for the homeowner to notice. Left another few weeks, the motor would have seized entirely.

Replaced fan motor assembly with OEM Zephyr part. Cleaned blower wheel while the motor was out, had some grease accumulation. Tested all three fan speeds and light functions post-repair. Noise completely eliminated. Customer was relieved, they'd been cooking with kitchen windows open to avoid the noise.
Newport Beach (Orange County) · GE Under-Cabinet JV536DWW

"Hood completely dead, nothing works, no lights, no fan"

Blown thermal fuse, the safety fuse inside the hood had tripped due to excessive heat from a severely clogged filter. The filter was so restricted that heat from cooking had nowhere to go and the internal temperature exceeded the fuse rating. This is the less common but more serious consequence of filter neglect, a $15 thermal fuse failure that shuts down the entire unit. Coastal Newport Beach kitchens with high-volume cooking accelerate filter saturation faster than dry inland environments.

Replaced thermal fuse with correct-spec replacement, cleaned filter thoroughly, verified all functions restored. Explained to customer how the failure chain worked, dirty filter → heat buildup → fuse trip, so they understood why filter maintenance actually matters. Unit fully operational within 40 minutes.
Thousand Oaks (Ventura County) · Broan Elite E60000 Over-Range

"Two speed settings stopped working, only high speed works now"

Failed speed control switch, the multi-speed selector on Broan range hoods uses a rotary switch that routes power to different motor windings for each speed. Two of the three speed contacts had burned out, leaving only the direct high-speed connection functional. The motor itself was fine.

Replaced speed control switch assembly with OEM Broan part. Verified all three speed settings operational after replacement. Also replaced the incandescent light bulb which was burned out, customer hadn't noticed because the hood light is easy to overlook. 35-minute repair total.

08, Frequently Asked Questions

Range hood repair, what people ask us

How much does range hood repair cost?

Our diagnostic fee is $89, applied toward the repair once you approve the work. Most repairs run between $100 and $280. Fan motor, blower wheel, light socket, or switch replacement is toward the lower end. Control board replacement on premium hoods runs higher. We provide a written estimate before any work begins.

Which areas of Southern California do you cover?

All five counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside. We dispatch from 8 service territories so the technician on your call is coming from the closest one. Same-day is our standard.

My range hood fan runs but doesn't clear smoke, is it broken?

Check the grease filter first. A clogged filter can restrict airflow by 50%+, the fan runs but nothing gets through. If you have a high-BTU professional range, the hood may also be undersized for the burners. We assess both before recommending any parts.

How often should I clean my range hood filters?

Metal mesh grease filters every 1–3 months, monthly if you cook frequently or use high-BTU burners. Most can go in the dishwasher. Charcoal filters on ductless hoods every 3–6 months, they can't be cleaned, only replaced. A saturated grease filter is both a fire hazard and the most common cause of performance loss.

What is the difference between a vented and ventless range hood?

Vented hoods exhaust air outside through ductwork, removing smoke, moisture, heat, and odors entirely. Ventless/recirculating hoods filter and return air to the kitchen, they remove grease and some odors but not moisture or heat. Vented is significantly more effective. Ventless is the only option in apartments without duct access.

Do you repair Wolf, Vent-A-Hood, and Zephyr range hoods?

Yes. These are among the premium hood brands we service most across SoCal. We source OEM parts for Wolf specifically and carry parts for Zephyr and Broan. For Vent-A-Hood and Hestan, parts are sourced from authorized distributors.

My range hood is making a loud noise, what's wrong?

Rattling or vibration usually means the blower wheel has grease buildup and is unbalanced. Grinding or squealing means the fan motor bearings are failing. We check the blower wheel before the motor, cleaning it often resolves the noise without needing a motor replacement.

When does it make sense to repair vs replace a range hood?

Rule of thumb: under 8 years old and the repair is under $250, fix it. Over 12 years old AND repair over $400, consider replacing. Premium hoods (Wolf, Vent-A-Hood, Zephyr Pro, Miele) are almost always worth repairing, they're built for 15-20 year service lives and replacement runs $1,500–$5,000+ before installation. Builder-grade Broan and NuTone hoods have a shorter window. We tell you straight which side of that line your unit falls on.

What does the 90-day warranty cover on range hood repairs?

Every range hood repair we complete carries a 90-day warranty on both parts and labor. If the same issue returns within that window, we come back at no charge. That's in writing before we leave.
