01, About This Service

Three completely different technologies, we work on all of them.

Cooktop repair across Southern California means gas, electric, and increasingly induction, and each has completely different failure modes, components, and diagnostic approaches. A technician who knows gas cooktops well but has limited induction experience will misdiagnose an induction error code every time. We work on all three regularly.

Gas cooktop calls are the most common, the igniter that clicks without lighting, the burner with uneven or weak flame, the spark electrode that's failed. Most gas burner issues start with cleaning: food debris in the burner ports and under the burner cap is responsible for a significant share of "broken" gas cooktops that are actually just dirty. If cleaning doesn't resolve it, the spark electrode, igniter module, or gas valve is the actual failure.

Induction is growing fast across SoCal as cities push toward electrification (LA building electrification ordinance, Santa Monica all-electric new construction, Pasadena and Irvine reach codes). The Thermador Freedom induction, Bosch FlexInduction, Gaggenau full-surface units, and Wolf induction are all now common in renovated kitchens from Westside LA to Newport Coast to Conejo Valley to Inland Empire master-planned communities. These units have unique failure modes, induction coil failures, control board faults, pan detection sensor issues, that require brand-specific diagnostic knowledge. We work on these regularly.

⚠️ Cracked Glass, Stop Using It

A cracked or chipped glass/ceramic cooktop surface is a safety hazard. Cracks expose heating elements or electronics to spills, and on gas units can allow gas accumulation in unsafe areas. The crack will also propagate with heat cycling, a hairline fracture today becomes a larger crack after a few more uses. Don't use a cracked cooktop. Call us for an assessment, glass replacement is sometimes possible, and we tell you honestly whether it makes financial sense vs. replacing the cooktop.

02, Cooktop Types We Service

Every cooktop configuration in SoCal kitchens

Gas, electric, and induction cooktops share a surface and a purpose but almost nothing else mechanically. Our technicians are trained on all three.

Gas

Gas Cooktops

Most common in SoCal homes, preferred by serious cooks for precise heat control and immediate response. Open burner and sealed burner configurations. Wolf, Thermador Star Burner, Viking, and Gaggenau vario gas are the premium brands we see most.

  • Burner won't light / clicks constantly
  • Weak or uneven flame
  • Spark electrode failure
  • Burner cap/grate clogging
  • Gas valve failure
  • Igniter module failure
Electric

Electric Cooktops

Smooth-top glass ceramic and coil models. Common in condos and apartments without gas service. Radiant heating elements under the glass surface are the primary failure point. Control switches and surface units are also frequent repairs.

  • Burner not heating
  • Burner heating unevenly / hot spots
  • Radiant element failure
  • Surface unit (coil) failure
  • Control switch failure
  • Cracked glass surface
Induction

Induction Cooktops

Growing rapidly in SoCal new construction and renovations, no open flame, faster heating than gas, compatible with the regional electrification push (LA building ordinance, Santa Monica all-electric mandate, Pasadena/Irvine reach codes). Unique failure modes distinct from gas and electric. Thermador, Bosch, Gaggenau, Wolf, and Miele are the brands we service most.

  • Error codes (E0–E9 series)
  • Pan detection failure
  • Induction coil failure
  • Control board faults
  • Touch panel unresponsive
  • Boost mode not working

03, Common Problems

What our technicians fix most often

Gas Burner Won't Light

Before concluding the igniter has failed, check the burner cap and burner ports for food debris. Clogged ports are the most common reason a burner won't light, and cleaning them resolves it without any parts. If the burner is clean and still won't light, the spark electrode or igniter module is the likely culprit. We check the burner condition first.

Constant Clicking (Gas)

A gas burner that clicks continuously even when off usually means moisture or food debris has gotten into the igniter housing. Drying the igniter with a hair dryer sometimes resolves this. If not, the spark switch or igniter module has failed and is running continuously, that's a parts replacement.

Weak or Uneven Gas Flame

Partial blockage in the burner ports causes some holes to flow less gas than others, producing an asymmetric or weak flame. Cleaning the ports with a pin (not a toothpick, it can leave debris) often restores even flame. If cleaning doesn't help, the gas pressure regulator or the gas valve may need attention.

Electric Burner Not Heating

A failed radiant element (the heating coil under the glass on a smooth-top) is the most common cause. On coil-type cooktops, the surface unit itself has failed. The control switch that routes power to the element can also fail. We carry radiant elements and surface units for the major brands.

Cracked Glass Cooktop

Do not continue using it. A crack in a glass or ceramic cooktop surface is a safety hazard, spills can reach the heating elements, and on gas units the crack can allow gas to accumulate. Glass replacement is sometimes available for specific models; on others, the cooktop needs to be replaced. We assess the damage and give you honest options.

Induction Error Codes

Induction cooktops have brand-specific error code systems. E0/E1 errors typically indicate electronics issues; codes related to the coils indicate the induction element itself. Some error codes are triggered by wrong cookware, induction only works with ferromagnetic pans. We diagnose induction error codes correctly for Bosch, Thermador, Miele, Wolf, and Gaggenau specifically.

Control Panel / Touch Panel Dead

A touch panel that won't respond may have a failed membrane, a failed control board, or a safety lockout that's been accidentally engaged (common on induction units, which have child lock features). We check for lockout mode before concluding hardware has failed, many service calls for "dead control panels" resolve with a simple reset sequence.

Control Knob Failure

On gas cooktops, the control knob both actuates the spark switch and controls the gas valve. When the shaft inside the knob strips or the spring mechanism fails, the knob spins freely without engaging. On electric cooktops, the infinite switch behind the knob controls power to the element, when it fails, the burner either won't heat or won't turn off.

04, Induction Cooktops Across SoCal

The fastest-growing cooktop type across Southern California, and the least understood

SoCal's electrification push (LA building electrification ordinance, Santa Monica all-electric mandate, Pasadena and Irvine reach codes), new construction mandates, and serious home cooking culture are driving rapid adoption of induction. We've seen a significant increase in induction calls over the past two years across all 5 counties.

⚑ Induction Cooktop Repair

Why induction repairs require different expertise than gas or electric

An induction cooktop generates heat through electromagnetic induction, a copper coil under the glass creates a magnetic field that heats only ferromagnetic cookware, not the cooktop surface itself. The technology is fundamentally different from gas or electric, which means the failure modes are different, the diagnostic process is different, and the parts are different.

Most of the generic appliance repair content about cooktops doesn't cover induction accurately because the category grew quickly and the training lag is real. We've had calls from homeowners who had been told their induction cooktop needed a new control board when the actual issue was a failed induction coil, a less expensive part that requires knowing how to test coil function, which is not a standard skill for general appliance technicians.

E-series error codes Brand-specific, E0 through E9 mean different things on Bosch vs Thermador vs Miele
Pan detection issues Sensor failure can cause "no pan detected" even with compatible cookware
Induction coil failure Individual zone coils can fail, often misdiagnosed as control board failure
Boost mode faults High-power mode circuitry fails independently from standard power on some brands
Child lock confusion Accidentally engaged child lock is responsible for many "dead panel" service calls
Cookware compatibility SoCal electrification converts often have non-induction cookware, we advise on this

06, Recent Repairs

What our technicians actually fixed recently

Silver Lake (LA County) Β· Thermador Gas Cooktop SGS365BS

"Two burners keep clicking constantly, even when off"

Moisture and food residue in the igniter housings on two of the Star Burners, a common issue after a cooking spill that gets into the igniter area. The spark switches were triggering continuously because the moisture was completing a circuit. On Thermador Star Burner configurations, the igniter access requires removing the burner grate assembly and the burner cap carefully.

Thoroughly cleaned and dried both igniter housings, cleaned spark electrode tips, cleared food debris from surrounding burner port areas. Tested all six burners, clicking resolved on both affected burners. Advised customer on cleaning technique to prevent recurrence, keeping the Star Burner ports clear with a soft brush after cooking spills prevents most igniter moisture issues.
Newport Beach (Orange County) Β· Bosch 800 Series Induction NITP068UC

"Shows E6 error, two zones on the left won't work"

E6 on this Bosch induction model indicates an induction coil fault, specifically the two left-side coils had failed. This was initially misdiagnosed by a previous technician as a control board issue (the more expensive repair). Induction coil failure and control board failure can produce similar surface symptoms, but the E6 code points to the coil when the other zones work normally. The Newport Beach all-electric new construction has driven a noticeable uptick in induction service calls along the OC coast.

Replaced both failed induction coil assemblies with OEM Bosch parts. Verified all four zones heating correctly and error code cleared. Control board was intact and functional, the correct diagnosis saved the customer approximately $400 over a board replacement.
Thousand Oaks (Ventura County) Β· GE Profile Electric Glass Cooktop PP9030SJSS

"Large front burner stopped heating, cracks appearing too"

Failed radiant element on the front left zone, plus a hairline crack visible from above. The crack had been developing for a while, heat cycling on a failing element generates uneven thermal stress on the glass. The radiant element itself was open-circuit (tested with a multimeter). Important question: does the crack make glass replacement necessary, or can just the element be replaced?

Assessed glass crack, hairline, not through-glass, no penetration to element area. Replaced failed radiant element with OEM GE part. Advised customer to monitor crack, if it propagates further the glass will need replacement, but at time of service it was cosmetic and surface-only. Element replacement resolved the heating failure; customer understood the glass risk going forward.
Beverly Hills (LA County) Β· Wolf 36" Gas Cooktop CG365PS

"One burner flame is very low no matter how high we turn it"

Partially blocked gas orifice on a Wolf sealed burner, the orifice (the small brass fitting that meters gas flow to the burner) had accumulated residue that restricted flow. On Wolf sealed burner cooktops, cleaning the orifice requires careful disassembly of the burner assembly. It's a simple fix but requires the right approach to avoid damaging the orifice threading.

Disassembled affected burner assembly, carefully cleared and cleaned gas orifice with appropriate tools (not anything that could enlarge the orifice opening). Reassembled, tested flame height at all dial positions, full range of flame height restored. Checked all other burners while there, one other had minor orifice buildup; cleared as preventive maintenance at no extra charge.

08, Frequently Asked Questions

Cooktop repair, what people ask us

How much does cooktop repair cost?

Our diagnostic fee is $89, applied toward the repair once you approve the work. Most cooktop repairs run between $120 and $320. A burner igniter, spark electrode, or heating element replacement is toward the lower end. Control board replacement on premium brands like Thermador, Wolf, or Gaggenau runs higher. We provide a written estimate before any work begins.

Which areas of Southern California do you cover?

All five counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside. We dispatch from 8 service territories so the technician on your call is coming from the closest one. Same-day is our standard.

My gas burner clicks but won't light, what's wrong?

The most common cause is a clogged burner port or dirty burner cap, food debris blocks the gas ports and the igniter sparks but can't light the gas. This is often a cleaning issue, not a repair. If cleaning doesn't resolve it, the spark electrode, igniter module, or gas valve is the next thing to check. We look at the burner condition before recommending parts.

Is it safe to use a cooktop with a cracked glass surface?

No. A cracked glass or ceramic cooktop surface is a safety hazard and should not be used. Cracks expose heating elements or electronics to spills, and on gas units can allow gas accumulation. The crack will also propagate with heat cycling. We assess glass damage and advise honestly on whether repair or replacement makes sense for your specific unit.

My induction cooktop shows an error code and won't heat, what does that mean?

Induction cooktops display brand-specific error codes. E0/E1 errors typically indicate power supply or sensor issues; E6 or similar codes often point to the induction coil or control board. Some errors are triggered by incompatible cookware, induction requires ferromagnetic pans. We diagnose induction error codes correctly for Bosch, Thermador, Miele, Wolf, and Gaggenau specifically.

Do you repair Wolf, Thermador, and Gaggenau cooktops?

Yes. These are three of the professional-grade cooktop brands we work on most frequently across SoCal premium kitchen markets. Wolf sealed burner, Thermador Star Burner, and Gaggenau full-surface induction all require brand-specific OEM parts and familiarity with their specific configurations. We source parts from authorized distributors.

I smell gas near my cooktop, what should I do?

Turn off all burners, open windows, and leave the space without using any electrical switches. Call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from outside. Do not schedule a repair call until the gas supplier has assessed the situation. Once cleared, we handle the appliance-side repair, gas valves, burner assemblies, and ignition systems.

When does it make sense to repair vs replace a cooktop?

Rule of thumb: under 8 years old and the repair is under $300, fix it. Over 12 years old AND the repair is over $500, consider replacing. Pro-grade brands flip the math, Wolf, Thermador, Gaggenau, Miele, BlueStar are almost always worth repairing through year 20+; replacement runs $3,000–$8,000+ before installation. We tell you straight which side of that line your unit falls on.

What does the 90-day warranty cover on cooktop repairs?

Every cooktop repair we complete carries a 90-day warranty on both parts and labor. If the same issue returns within that window, we come back at no charge. That's in writing before we leave.
