Commercial grill service
Commercial restaurant grills are different equipment from residential outdoor BBQ.
Vulcan VCCB-25, Garland MGM-24, MagiKitch'n MK-30 (Wolf Industrial commercial line, separate from residential Wolf cooking), Imperial IRB-24, Star Ultra-Max: these are heavy-duty cooking equipment built for restaurant kitchens. 12 to 16 hour service days, continuous high-heat operation, 30,000 to 50,000 BTU per burner, gas connections sized 1-inch minimum (residential is 1/2-inch). LA restaurants depend on these workhorses to produce the steaks, burgers, and grilled proteins your business runs on.
If you're looking for outdoor patio grill repair (Lynx, Fire Magic, Twin Eagles, Wolf Outdoor: residential built-in BBQ), see our outdoor grill repair page. This page covers commercial restaurant grills only.
Our techs service the full commercial grill lineup across LA County, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. Vulcan VCCB Series (24, 25, 36, 47, 60-inch radiant gas char-broilers, the most common LA commercial grill). Garland MGM Master Series (MGM24, MGM36, MGM48). MagiKitch'n MK Series (MK24, MK36, premium institutional). Imperial IRB Series. Star Ultra-Max (mid-range). Keating Miraclean. Bakers Pride XX series.
$120 commercial diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573 license. EPA 608 Universal certified #1346255700410. CSLB C-20 HVAC scope for adjacent commercial gas and refrigeration work. BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7. Parent context: commercial appliance repair.
Common scenarios
Top commercial grill repairs in our 5-county territory.
In rough order of frequency:
- Igniter failure (per burner, year 4 to 7 typical). Gas grill ignition wear from continuous high-heat cycles. Vulcan VCCB uses spark-electrode electrical ignition with replaceable modules; older Garland MGM units use pilot-based ignition where the thermocouple and pilot are paired components. Replacement runs $260 to $440 per burner. We carry common Vulcan and Garland igniter modules on the van.
- Thermocouple wear (year 5 to 8). Gas safety device, shuts off gas if pilot fails. The thermocouple sees direct flame impingement every cycle and degrades from oxidation. Pair replacement with the igniter on older units to avoid a second visit. $220 to $340.
- Burner head clog (cleaning service). Grease and carbon buildup affecting flame distribution. Symptom: yellow flame instead of blue, uneven heat across the grill surface, or flame lifting off the burner. Resolves with proper deep cleaning rather than parts replacement. $180 to $290 per burner.
- Radiant element failure (Vulcan VCCB radiant gas grills). Radiants over burners deteriorate over time, particularly on year 5+ units in busy steakhouse and burger-restaurant settings. Symptom: hot and cold spots across the grill surface, individual radiant glowing dimmer than its neighbors. Replace $290 to $540 per radiant.
- Drip tray drain blockage. Grease channel clogs, requires deep cleaning plus drain clearing. Common after 6 to 12 months without scheduled cleaning. $200 to $340.
- Gas valve degradation (year 8+). Main gas control valve, full replacement $580 to $980. Symptom: inconsistent burner output across the unit, slow ignition, or gas-pressure-related complaints from the kitchen.
- Grill grate or plate replacement. Heavy use deformation. Cast iron grates $290 to $540 each, chrome-plated steel grates $440 to $720 each. Cast iron lasts longer with proper seasoning; chrome plating is easier to clean but warps under year-round high-heat service.
- Lava rock or ceramic briquette replacement. Older charbroiler-style grills, replacement $80 to $180 per refill. Lava rock breaks down faster (12 to 18 months); ceramic briquettes last longer (24 to 36 months) but cost more upfront.
Field observations
Three things we see on commercial grill calls that aren't in the manual.
1. LA commercial grill installs are often gas-line-undersized. Commercial grills require a 1-inch gas supply line minimum to deliver the 30,000 to 50,000 BTU per burner the equipment is rated for. Older LA restaurant buildouts in West Hollywood, Hollywood, and Koreatown frequently have 1/2-inch residential-spec lines feeding commercial grills, especially when a restaurant moved into a converted retail or residential space. Symptom: grill rated for 4 burners simultaneous use can only run 2 at full output. The fix is gas-line upsizing (specialty plumber trade) before any further service makes sense. We diagnose pressure on every commercial grill call and flag undersized lines so the operator knows the root cause.
2. Vulcan VCCB radiants degrade unevenly. The Vulcan VCCB radiant gas char-broiler is the most common LA commercial grill, and its radiant elements (the wire-mesh ceramic plates over each burner) are the consistent year-5-to-8 service item. They don't all fail at once. One radiant deteriorates first, creating a hot-and-cold pattern across the grill that makes consistent cooking impossible. Operators often think the whole grill is failing when it's one radiant element at $290 to $540. We diagnose all radiants, replace the failed ones, and calibrate burner output across the grill.
3. MagiKitch'n is not residential Wolf. Same parent corporation (Sub-Zero Group / Wolf Industrial), but completely separate product lines. MagiKitch'n is the commercial restaurant equipment line: heavy-gauge construction, hospital and university dining, premium institutional. Residential Wolf (the Wolf Outdoor or Wolf Range / Wolf Cooktop you might see in a Beverly Hills home) is the home cooking line. Different parts catalogs, different service procedures, different authorized service network. We service both sides because we hold credentials for both residential and commercial scopes, but the service approach is fundamentally different.
Configurations we service
Every commercial grill type in the LA market.
Radiant Gas Grills (Most Common LA Commercial)
Vulcan VCCB Series: VCCB-25 (24-inch), VCCB-36 (36-inch), VCCB-47 (47-inch), VCCB-60 (60-inch). Radiant elements over gas burners distribute heat evenly. Steakhouses, burger restaurants, Mexican grills.
Garland MGM Master: MGM24, MGM36, MGM48. Similar radiant gas configuration.
Lava Rock / Briquette Grills (Older Charbroiler Style)
Imitate char wood-fire taste. Lava rock or ceramic briquette holds heat over gas burners. Older installs, replacement to radiant grills typical at the 10 to 15 year mark.
Premium Institutional (MagiKitch'n MK Series)
MK-24, MK-36, MK-48. Heavy-gauge construction, hospital and university dining and high-volume catering. Wolf Industrial parent (Sub-Zero Group commercial division, NOT residential Wolf).
Mid-Range Commercial (Star Ultra-Max, Keating Miraclean, Imperial IRB)
Star Ultra-Max: popular mid-priced. Keating Miraclean: premium with stainless steel construction. Imperial IRB: economy commercial.

FAQ
Commercial grill repair questions.
What's the difference between commercial grill repair and outdoor BBQ repair?
Different equipment, different parts catalogs, different service. Commercial grills (Vulcan VCCB, Garland MGM, MagiKitch'n) are restaurant kitchen heavy-duty 30,000 to 50,000 BTU continuous service equipment. Outdoor BBQ (Lynx, Fire Magic, Twin Eagles) is residential patio grilling, 15,000 to 30,000 BTU intermittent use. Different gas line sizing, different ignition systems, different pricing. See /outdoor/grill-repair/ for residential.
My Vulcan VCCB radiant element doesn't heat evenly. What's wrong?
Common Vulcan VCCB issue at year 5 to 8. Radiant elements deteriorate, individual radiant degradation creates hot and cold spots. Replacement runs $290 to $540 per radiant. We diagnose all radiants, replace failing ones, calibrate burner output.
Is MagiKitch'n the same as residential Wolf?
Same parent corporation (Sub-Zero Group / Wolf Industrial), but separate product lines. MagiKitch'n is commercial restaurant equipment. Residential Wolf is home cooking equipment. Different parts catalogs, different service procedures, different authorized network. We service both.
Can you handle commercial grill plus exhaust hood in one visit?
Yes. Most repair shops specialize in one or the other; we do both. Single dispatch saves a second visit. Type I grease hoods are required for commercial grills (NFPA 96 plus LA County compliance). See /commercial/exhaust-hood-repair/.
My grill has gas pressure issues. What's the fix?
LA commercial grill installations often have undersized gas line (1/2-inch residential vs required 1-inch commercial). Diagnose gas pressure first (need 7+ inches WC for most commercial grills). If pressure is OK, the cause is usually gas valve, igniter, or thermocouple. If pressure is low, gas line upsizing is required (specialty plumber trade).
Vulcan vs Garland vs MagiKitch'n: which is most common in LA?
Vulcan VCCB is most common (mid-priced, durable, dominant LA mid-range). Garland MGM sits at the premium tier. MagiKitch'n is high-end institutional and premium. Star, Keating, and Imperial are mid-range alternatives.
Do you replace commercial grill grates?
Yes. Cast iron grates run $290 to $540 each, chrome-plated steel $440 to $720 each. Heavy-use deformation is typical at year 6 to 10. We carry common sizes for Vulcan, Garland, and MagiKitch'n.
What's your warranty?
90 days SDAR labor warranty on every repair. Brand component warranties (where applicable through manufacturer authorized service network) are processed separately. BHGS #A49573, CSLB C-20 HVAC scope, EPA 608 Universal #1346255700410, BBB A+ accredited.
