01 · What we do
A standalone freezer is the hidden hero of household food storage.
The chest freezer in the garage with the frozen meat from Costco. The upright freezer in the basement holding 6 months of family meal prep. The secondary freezer keeping ice cream and frozen desserts ready. When standalone freezers fail, the loss is concentrated, sometimes hundreds of dollars of food at once. Garage installations also face temperature stress that combo refrigerator-freezers don't, with extreme heat in summer and sometimes near-freezing temperatures in winter.
Our techs service standalone freezers across LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. Chest freezers (Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, most common configurations 5 to 25 cu ft). Upright freezers (Frigidaire, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, plus standalone freezer columns from Sub-Zero). Garage-rated freezers (specifically engineered to handle ambient temp swings 0 to 110°F that destroy non-rated freezers). Sub-Zero standalone freezer columns (column installations, premium tier).
This page covers standalone freezers only. If your freezer is part of a refrigerator-freezer combo (French door, side-by-side, top-freezer, bottom-freezer fridge), the combo unit is covered on our refrigerator repair page. Different repair patterns because combo freezers share the refrigerant system with the refrigerator section.
$89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573. BBB A+. Same-day service in most cases.
🌡 Southern California Climate Note
Garage freezers in SoCal face the harshest ambient swing in the country: 110°F+ summer days, 35°F winter nights. Standard (non-garage-rated) freezers can't handle the cold cycle: their thermostats stop calling for cooling when garage ambient drops below 38°F, food thaws, refreezes when temp climbs, food spoils. If your garage freezer is older than 5 years and not garage-rated, this is the most common failure pattern we see. Garage-ready conversion or replacement is often the right call.
🔧 Before You Call: 4 Quick Checks
Try these in 10 minutes. They resolve a meaningful share of "freezer not freezing" calls before we dispatch.
- Check the temperature setting. Freezer should be 0°F. Settings get bumped during cleaning or by curious kids. Verify the dial or digital display.
- Check the door seal. Close the door on a dollar bill at multiple points. If it slides out without resistance anywhere, the gasket is leaking and warm air is infiltrating constantly.
- Verify power and breaker. Listen for the compressor hum. If silent, check the outlet with another appliance and confirm the breaker isn't tripped (garage circuits trip from heavy summer A/C loads).
- Check the defrost drain (frost-free uprights). Excessive frost on the back wall plus water pooling on the floor means the defrost drain is blocked. Sometimes a kettle of warm water down the drain channel clears it.
