Garage freezers in SoCal face the harshest ambient swing in the country: 110°F+ summer days, 35°F winter nights. Standard (non-garage-rated) freezers can't handle the cold cycle: their thermostats stop calling for cooling when garage ambient drops below 38°F, food thaws, refreezes when temp climbs, food spoils. No. Most chest freezers are manual defrost by design (more efficient operation, simpler mechanism, longer service life). Manual defrost means you periodically (every 6 to 12 months typically) shut off the freezer, let frost melt, mop water, restart. Frost-free chest freezers exist but are less common. Frost-free uprights are standard.
Depends on type and price tier. Mid-tier chest or upright freezer ($300 to $700 original price): major compressor failure at year 8+ usually replacement. Premium upright ($1,000 to $2,500): repair through year 12 to 15 makes sense. Sub-Zero standalone column ($8,000 to $12,000 original): repair through year 20+ because the cabinet outlasts components by decades.
R-600a (isobutane) is hydrocarbon refrigerant in newer green freezer models (post-2018-2020 transition). Different service procedures than R-134a. Requires R-600a awareness and proper handling procedures (R-600a is flammable hydrocarbon, proper procedures required). Most appliance shops don't have R-600a training. We do.
