Microwave repair is one of the few appliance jobs with a genuine safety reason to call a professional.
Most appliance repairs are professional-grade because of complexity, tools, or parts availability, not because attempting them yourself poses physical danger. Microwave repair is different. The high-voltage capacitor inside every microwave stores a charge of 2,000 volts or more, and it retains that charge even after the microwave is unplugged. Touching it without properly discharging it first can be fatal. Our technicians discharge the capacitor before any other internal work, it's the first step of every microwave service call, every time.
The most common microwave call we get across SoCal is "runs but doesn't heat." The cause is almost always the high-voltage diode, a small component that converts the capacitor's charge to the voltage the magnetron needs. When it fails, the magnetron gets no usable power and produces no heat. We carry HV diodes for the brands we see most across SoCal. It's typically a 30-45 minute repair.
The second common call is over-the-range units, SoCal's apartment and condo stock (from DTLA high-rises to Irvine master-planned community condos to Inland Empire family homes) is full of them, and they have additional components beyond the standard countertop: exhaust fan motor, grease filter, charcoal filter, light assembly mounted over the range. They're also more involved to access for internal repairs since the unit is mounted above a cooktop.
If your microwave is producing visible sparks or arcing inside the cavity, stop using it immediately and unplug it. Sparking can indicate a dirty or damaged waveguide cover (sometimes a simple fix), or a failing magnetron (a more significant repair). We don't say this to generate business. We say it because it's true and most of the content explaining microwave repair online understates the risk significantly.

A microwave's high-voltage capacitor is charged to 2,100 volts or more during operation. Unlike most appliances where unplugging the unit removes all electrical hazard, a microwave capacitor holds its charge for hours or days after disconnection. The capacitor is physically located near the magnetron and high-voltage transformer, areas a technician must access to diagnose the most common microwave failures.
The proper procedure is to discharge the capacitor with an insulated resistor before any other internal work. This takes about 30 seconds if you know what you're doing and have the right tool. Without it, any contact with the capacitor terminals or the wiring connected to them can deliver a lethal shock. Our technicians do this as the first step, every time, without exception.

Over-the-Range (OTR) Microwaves
Mounted above the cooktop. Includes exhaust fan, grease filter, charcoal filter, and cooktop lighting in addition to standard microwave components. More involved to access, unit often needs partial unm ounting to reach internal parts.
Built-In & Drawer Microwaves
Integrated into cabinetry, Wolf, Miele, Thermador, Monogram. Higher-end installations with trim kits and cabinetry-matching panels. Removal and reinstallation requires care with the surrounding cabinetry. Almost always worth repairing given replacement + installation cost.
Convection Microwaves
Combination microwave and convection oven, common in smaller SoCal kitchens where counter space is limited (DTLA condos, Westside apartments, OC coastal cottages, Conejo Valley townhomes). Additional components: convection fan, heating element. Both systems can fail independently.

Microwave Runs But No Heat
High-voltage diode failure is the most common cause, by a significant margin. The diode converts AC power to the DC voltage the magnetron needs. When it fails, the magnetron gets no usable power. The microwave appears to run normally (light, turntable, timer) but produces no heat. We carry HV diodes for the major brands.
Sparking or Arcing Inside
Could be a coated or damaged waveguide cover (the flat panel covering the magnetron opening inside the cavity, food residue can carbonize and arc). Could also indicate a failing magnetron. Stop using the unit and call us. Operating a sparking microwave can damage the cavity walls and escalate a minor repair significantly.
Won't Turn On
Door switches are the first thing to check, microwaves have two or three interlock switches that must all register "closed" for the unit to operate. A failed line fuse (often blown by a power surge) or a thermal fuse that's tripped from overheating are also common causes. We carry door switches and fuses for the major brands.
Door Won't Open or Latch
The door latch assembly and door hooks are mechanical parts that wear with use. A broken door hook or latch spring is common on units that see heavy daily use. On some models the door release button itself fails. These are purely mechanical repairs, no high-voltage involvement, and usually quick fixes.
Turntable Not Spinning
The turntable motor sits under the glass plate and rotates it during operation. When it fails, the plate stays stationary and food heats unevenly. Also check: whether the turntable coupler (the plastic drive piece) has cracked or stripped. Motor or coupler replacement is one of the simpler microwave repairs.
Touchpad / Buttons Not Responding
A failed membrane touchpad is the most common cause, the conductive membrane behind the buttons degrades over time. Sometimes just the ribbon connector between the touchpad and the control board has come loose. A failed control board is less common but possible. We test the touchpad and connector before recommending a board replacement.
Microwave Overheating / Shuts Off
A thermal fuse or thermal protector that's tripping due to actual overheating, often caused by a blocked vent or a failed cooling fan, or one that's failed and trips prematurely. We check the vent and fan function before replacing the thermal component, because the root cause matters.
Loud Noise During Operation
A grinding or humming sound usually indicates the turntable motor is failing or the turntable ring guide has broken. A buzzing from the transformer area can indicate a high-voltage issue. Rattling from the exhaust area on an OTR unit usually means a loose grease filter or a worn fan bearing.

Microwave Not Heating →
Runs but produces no heat. HV diode is the most common cause. Magnetron, capacitor, transformer diagnostic. Panasonic NN-SN/NN-SD inverter models follow a different repair tree.
Microwave No Power / Dead →
Display dead, no response. About 30% resolve at the $89 diagnostic with GFCI/outlet check. Internal line fuse, door interlocks, thermal fuse, control board.
Plate Not Rotating →
Microwave still heats. Drive coupler is the cheapest fix ($129 typical). Turntable motor, support roller, control board signal. Lowest-urgency microwave failure mode.
Sparking or Arcing Inside →
Stop using immediately. Mica waveguide cover (often called "wax paper" by customers) is the leading cause. Brown/black burn = replace cover. White discoloration = wipe and assess.

"Runs but absolutely no heat, timer counts down, nothing happens"
High-voltage diode failure, the most common microwave repair we do. The unit was running normally in every way that didn't require heat: light, turntable, timer, control panel. The diode had failed open, so the magnetron received no DC voltage. Standard HV diode failure presentation on an LG OTR that had been in service for 6 years.
"Sparking inside every time we use it, smells burnt"
Damaged waveguide cover. The plastic cover over the magnetron opening inside the cavity had a carbonized area where food residue had arced repeatedly over time, making the damage progressively worse. Left another week of use, this could have damaged the cavity wall itself, which is a much more expensive repair or a unit replacement. Caught early, it was a $35 part.
"Three buttons on the touchpad stopped working, can't set time"
Membrane touchpad failure, three adjacent buttons (the 4, 5, 6 number keys) had failed simultaneously, which usually indicates a damaged section of the membrane rather than individual switch failures. Common on units that see heavy use or where cleaning solution has gotten behind the panel. The control board itself was functional.
"Door won't latch, spring broke and now the drawer won't stay closed"
Failed door latch spring on a Wolf drawer microwave, drawer microwaves have a different latch mechanism than standard door units, using a spring-loaded catch that engages when the drawer closes. The spring had fatigued and broken. Wolf built-in units almost always make financial sense to repair given replacement + cabinetry reinstallation cost.
