01, About This Service
A stove repair across SoCal, the most common call we get, and one of the fastest to fix.
Stove and range failures divide cleanly into three categories by type, gas, electric, and induction, and each has its own set of failure modes. A gas burner that won't light is almost never the same problem as an electric stovetop element that won't heat. Getting the diagnosis right the first time saves a return trip. Our technicians carry parts for LG, GE, Samsung, and Whirlpool, the four most common stove brands in SoCal apartments and homes, on the service vehicle. Wolf, Thermador, Viking, Bertazzoni, BlueStar, and Capital Cooking parts are sourced same-day through specialty distributors.
On gas stove and cooktop calls, the first thing our technicians do is check the burner ports and igniter ceramic before reaching for any tools. Clogged burner ports and food-contaminated igniters solve the problem in about 35% of "burner won't light" calls without any parts. That's a $89 service call instead of a $200+ repair, and it's worth knowing before we start pulling components.
We dispatch from 8 service territories spanning all 5 SoCal counties, from a Beverly Hills Wolf range to a Newport Beach Thermador, from a Thousand Oaks Bertazzoni to a Temecula GE Profile. Same-day or next-day is the standard, not a premium.
Turn off all burners, leave the house, and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200. They locate the source and confirm safety at no charge. Then call us at (424) 325-0520 for the repair. Don't attempt to use the stove until the gas smell is resolved.
For commercial restaurant ranges (Wolf C-Series, Vulcan, Garland, Imperial, Montague), see our commercial stove & range page. Different parts inventory, $120 commercial diagnostic, 24/7 emergency response.
02, Three Completely Different Repairs
Gas, electric, and induction stoves fail in completely different ways. The diagnosis approach changes entirely.
Telling us your stove type when you call lets us bring the right parts and set accurate expectations on repair time and cost.
Ignition system, gas supply, burner ports
- Burner won't light → clogged port, failed igniter, or spark module
- Clicks but no flame → gas valve not opening or clogged orifice
- All burners dead → failed spark module or control board
- Weak flame → partially clogged port or regulator issue
- Gas smell → SoCalGas first, then gas valve repair
- Gas-certified technicians required for all gas work
Heating elements, infinite switches, control board
- One burner dead → failed coil/radiant element or infinite switch
- All burners dead → blown fuse, failed control board, or wiring
- Heat won't regulate → failed infinite switch
- Burner stays on max → failed infinite switch (safety concern)
- Glass cooktop / stovetop crack → replacement panel required
- No error codes needed, straightforward component testing
Induction coils, inverter board, control electronics
- One zone dead → failed induction coil or zone inverter
- Error codes → control board fault or temperature sensor
- Intermittent heating → failing inverter board
- No heat at all → main power board or all inverters
- More complex than conventional electric, higher repair cost
- LG, Samsung, GE, Electrolux, Bosch, Miele induction serviced
Cleaning solves 35% of "burner won't light" calls without any parts
Remove the burner cap. It lifts off, no tools needed on most gas ranges.
Clean the ports around the burner head with a toothpick or thin wire. Food debris clogs these.
Dry-brush the igniter ceramic with a toothbrush. Grease on the tip prevents the spark.
Let it dry completely before trying. Wet igniters won't spark. Try again after 10 minutes.
Still not lighting? Call (424) 325-0520, it's the igniter, gas valve, or spark module.
03, Common Failures
What our technicians diagnose most often on SoCal stoves, ranges, and stovetops
One Gas Burner Won't Light
Clean the burner port and igniter first, solves it 35% of the time. If still no click: failed spark module or wiring to that burner. If there's a click but no flame: clogged orifice or failed gas valve for that burner. We test with a multimeter to confirm before replacing the module, swapping the wrong part is a wasted visit.
All Gas Burners Dead at Once
All burners failing simultaneously points to the spark module (which powers all igniter electrodes from a single unit), the control board, or, on newer ranges, a failed display board that controls the whole surface. Check the circuit breaker first: gas ranges still need 120V for the ignition electronics even though they use gas for heat. A tripped breaker kills all igniters at once.
One Electric Burner Not Heating
Almost always the heating element or the infinite switch. Test by swapping the element to another position, if the dead zone follows the element, it's the element. If the dead zone stays in the same burner position with the element swapped, it's the infinite switch or wiring. Both are same-day repairs with parts typically on the service vehicle for LG, GE, Samsung, and Whirlpool.
Electric Burner Won't Turn Off
A failed infinite switch stuck in the "on" position, a safety concern that should be addressed before continued use. The infinite switch is the component behind the control knob that regulates current to the element. When it fails closed, the element stays at maximum heat regardless of knob position. Unplug the range or turn off the circuit breaker until it's repaired.
Range Not Heating to Temperature
On gas ranges: partially clogged burner ports or a failing gas valve restricting flow, the range heats but takes significantly longer than normal. On electric ranges: a partially failed heating element still generating some heat but below spec. A temperature probe test during the repair confirms actual vs. spec output and prevents replacing a working component.
Control Knobs / Display Not Responding
Failed control board, the most expensive single component on a modern stove. Before diagnosing control board failure, we check the wiring harness connections (often loose rather than failed) and any thermal fuses that protect the board. Thermal fuse replacement is $80–$120; control board is $200–$450. Getting the diagnosis right before ordering parts matters here.
🧽 Maintenance, extend the life of your range
Annual stovetop maintenance prevents the majority of "burner won't light" calls. We can include this with any service call or schedule it standalone.
- Deep-clean burner ports, pull the caps and clear ignition channels. Annual minimum, more often for heavy cooks.
- Inspect burner gaskets, degrading gaskets cause uneven flame and gas waste.
- Range hood vent flow check, a clogged hood pulls grease back into the burner area.
- Oven temperature calibration test, run a known-temperature probe; recalibrate if drift exceeds 15°F.
- Control panel and knob inspection, loose knobs and worn detents are a precursor to switch failure.
04, Repair or Replace?
We'll tell you honestly. Here's the math.
The general rule: repair if the cost is under 50% of replacement. But brand matters significantly.
Wolf · Thermador · Viking · Dacor · Bertazzoni · BlueStar · Capital, $4,000–$12,000+ ranges
- A $400 repair on a $6,000 Wolf range is 6.7% of replacement cost
- These ranges are built to last 20+ years with proper service
- Parts availability is excellent, specialty distributors stock them
- Resale value of a working luxury range is significant
- Repair is almost always the right call at any reasonable repair cost
LG · GE · Samsung · Whirlpool · Frigidaire, $600–$1,800 ranges
- Under 50% of replacement cost → repair makes sense
- Control board replacement on a $700 range: borderline, we'll say so
- Igniter, element, infinite switch → almost always worth repairing
- 10+ year old unit with control board failure → replacement often better
- We give you the repair cost before you decide, no pressure either way

06, Recent Repairs
What our technicians actually fixed recently
"Two burners clicking constantly but not lighting, the noise is driving me crazy"
Two clogged igniter ceramics and one partially blocked burner port on an LG gas range. The constant clicking sound, the igniter trying repeatedly to light a burner that won't sustain flame, is one of the most annoying stove failure modes and had been going on for four days. The tenant had tried cleaning the burner caps but hadn't removed them far enough to access the ports underneath.
"Control display went dark, nothing works, whole range is dead"
Failed thermal fuse on the control board of a Thermador PRG486WDH Pro Grand range. The thermal fuse, a one-time safety device that blows if the electronics area overheats, had triggered from a ventilation restriction caused by a cleaning cloth that had been pushed against the rear vent grill. When it blew, it cut power to the entire control board, making the range appear completely dead. This is a $95 part; the control board itself on this range is a $680 part. Correct diagnosis before ordering made a significant difference.
"Left front burner completely dead, no click, no flame, nothing"
Failed igniter electrode on the left front burner of a Wolf DF366. The spark module was functioning, confirmed by testing the other five burners, all of which sparked normally. The issue was isolated to the left front electrode assembly, which had developed an internal crack in the ceramic insulator, allowing the spark voltage to ground internally rather than jump to the burner. Wolf's ceramic igniters are higher-spec than standard residential igniters and fail less frequently, but when they fail, the ceramic crack symptom is specific.
"Front right burner stopped working, everything else is fine"
Failed infinite switch on the front right burner. Homeowner had correctly isolated the problem to one burner and had already tried swapping the heating element from another position, confirming the element itself was functional and the problem was in the control circuitry. The infinite switch had failed open, completely cutting power to that burner regardless of knob position.

My gas burner won't light, what should I try first?
Remove the burner cap and clean the ports with a toothpick, and dry-brush the igniter ceramic. Food debris causes 35% of "won't light" calls. Let it dry for 10 minutes and try again. If still not lighting, call us at (424) 325-0520.
My gas stove smells like gas, what do I do?
Turn off all burners, leave the house, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200. They verify and clear the source at no charge. Then call us for the repair.
Is it worth repairing my stove or should I replace it?
For luxury ranges (Wolf, Thermador, Viking, BlueStar, Capital): almost always repair, a $400 repair on a $6,000 range is obvious math. For budget brands (LG, GE, Samsung, Frigidaire): repair if under 50% of replacement cost. Control board on an older $700 range: borderline. We'll tell you honestly after the diagnostic.
Do you repair Wolf, Thermador, Viking, BlueStar, and Capital ranges?
Yes, these are among the most common luxury range calls we get across SoCal. Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, Calabasas, Pasadena. Parts sourced same-day through specialty distributors. Gas-certified technicians for all gas range work.
Do you also repair wall ovens?
Yes. Wall ovens share heating-element, control-board, and igniter failure modes with ranges. See our dedicated wall oven page for details specific to single, double, and combi wall-oven configurations.
My electric stove has one dead burner, easy fix?
Usually yes. Swap the element to another position: if dead zone follows the element, it's the element ($150–$200). If the dead zone stays in the same position, it's the infinite switch ($150–$220). Both are same-day repairs with parts typically on the van.
