Hobart, America's #1 commercial dishwasher, and where an independent tech fits
Hobart Corporation is the oldest and largest commercial dishwasher brand in the United States. The company traces to 1897 Troy, Ohio, became part of Dart & Kraft in 1981, Premark International in 1986, and has been part of the ITW Food Equipment Group since 1999. Hobart is the definitional American commercial foodservice-equipment brand, the AM16 is to commercial kitchens what the Kenworth is to long-haul trucking.
Hobart Corporation also runs its own direct service network, 125 service locations across the US, 1,500 technicians, their own LA office. For an LA operator, that's a real service infrastructure. The question we answer with this page isn't "who makes Hobart dishwashers", it's "when do you call Hobart Corp direct versus an independent tech?" The honest answer is: Hobart Corp for warranty work, new-install commissioning, and large contract accounts; independent for out-of-warranty repairs, emergency after-hours, weekends, and situations where the corporate dispatch window is 24β48 hours and your kitchen can't wait that long.
The other real gap is pricing. Hobart Corp direct typically lists a $300β$400 callout charge before any repair, plus parts, plus labor. We run $120 diagnostic waived with repair. For a door-gasket replacement, that alone is the difference between a $250 invoice and a $550 invoice. We don't say anything bad about Hobart Corp's service quality, their techs are good. We say that for the out-of-warranty segment of the market, an independent alternative with stocked parts and honest pricing is the sensible choice.
Hobart commercial dishwashers we service
AM16 / AM16VLT, premium door-type
Single-rack high-volume door machines. AM16 standard, AM16VLT is the ventless variant (no hood connection required, condenses steam internally). Heavy pump, heavy controls, designed for 15+ year service. Common failures in LA: rinse arm spray bearing, booster heater contactor, wash pump seal, chemical dispenser solenoid. Our guys run an AM16 service call at least weekly.
LXe / LXeR, undercounter
LXe is the standard undercounter rack machine. LXeR is the rackless variant, no rack, dishes sit on the inner structure, designed for glass and small-ware in bars and prep stations. Common service: door gasket, door switch, fill solenoid, drain pump, wash pump rebuild. LA bar clusters in WeHo, DTLA, and Santa Monica run heavy LXeR populations for glassware.
CLeR / CLeN / CL44eN, rack conveyor
Rack-conveyance line machines for high-volume institutional cafeterias and large hotel prep kitchens. CLeR is the retractable-hood variant, CLeN is the standard, CL44eN is the 44-inch-chamber high-capacity. Conveyor drive, tank heaters, spray arm banks, and final rinse booster, these jobs run longer service calls and more often scheduled-maintenance visits rather than emergency.
FT900, flight-type continuous belt
Top-of-range flight-type with continuous belt conveyance across pre-wash, wash, and final rinse zones. Standard in stadium commissaries (SoFi, Crypto.com, Dodger Stadium prep kitchens), airline catering (Gate Gourmet at LAX), large convention-center operations. Service complexity is highest, belt, drive motor, pre-wash manifold, multi-zone refrigerant or steam supply. Scheduled PM is the norm.
Common Hobart failure modes, what our techs actually fix
Across the AM16 and LXe populations we see most often in LA, the most common service calls concentrate in a predictable set. The rinse-arm spray bearing is the number-one AM16 failure, under continuous rotation, the bearing wears, the arm starts to wobble, rinse-water coverage drops, and you see film on glassware coming out of the final rinse. Replacement is a 30-minute job if the part is on the truck.
Booster heater contactors are second. Hobart door machines rely on a 180Β°F final-rinse booster to sanitize wares, when the contactor arcs out, the booster doesn't fire, rinse water drops below 180Β°F, and sanitation compliance fails. Operators notice because wares come out warmer, not steaming hot. Contactor replacement is 40 minutes. Third is the chemical dispenser solenoid, detergent or rinse-aid dispenser proportioning valve drifts or sticks, and you see either excessive suds, no rinse aid, or chemistry out of spec on the wash cycle.
On the LXe undercounter line, door gaskets are the single most common part we replace. The magnetic-strip gasket on an undercounter door compresses over 18β24 months of heavy bar service; once the seal is compromised, the unit loses temperature during the wash cycle and operators notice the cycle times extending. Gasket-plus-door-switch service is a 45-minute call that resolves most LXe "running long" complaints.
ITW family service, Hobart + Traulsen + Vulcan
Hobart is the flagship of ITW Food Equipment Group. ITW's commercial foodservice portfolio includes Traulsen (commercial refrigeration), Vulcan (cooking equipment, ranges, ovens, fryers), Wolf (commercial), Baxter (bakery equipment), and several others. For an LA operation running Hobart ware-washing and Traulsen refrigeration, a common combination at fine-dining and hotel banquet kitchens, the ITW brand family matters operationally because parts can flow through shared supply channels and both brands follow similar build-quality standards.
We service the Hobart/Traulsen combination often. See our Traulsen commercial refrigeration page for the refrigeration side. A common LA install we see: AM16 door machine in the back dish station, Traulsen G-series reach-in on the line, both from the same 2012β2015 install vintage, both running strong at the 10+ year mark. The ITW build quality delivers.
Used-market Hobarts and the LA restaurant liquidation pipeline
The LA restaurant closure rate generates a continuous flow of used Hobart equipment through restaurantequipment.bid, used-equipment brokers, and direct restaurant-to-restaurant sales. At any given time, there are dozens of used AM16, LXe, and CL-series Hobarts for sale across SoCal at 25β40% of new-equipment pricing. For a new operator or a second-location build, that's attractive, until you factor in unknown service history.
We offer a pre-purchase inspection service for buyers negotiating used Hobart deals. $120 diagnostic visit to the seller's location before the sale closes: front-panel-off inspection, wash and rinse pressure test, tank and wash-arm condition assessment, booster operation verification, written condition report. The report tells you whether you're walking into a $200 gasket swap or a $2,500 hidden wash-pump rebuild situation. For any used Hobart over $4,000, the inspection pays for itself on the first find.
LA service clusters, where our Hobart calls come from
The DTLA hotel cluster (JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, InterContinental, Conrad) runs heavy Hobart populations across banquet prep and main cafeteria kitchens. Beverly Hills hotels (Four Seasons, Waldorf Astoria, Peninsula, Montage) run premium door machines in banquet prep and typically maintain either Hobart Corp service contracts or independent coverage for out-of-contract equipment. Culver City and Marina del Rey restaurant corridors run mid-range AM16 + LXe combinations in the independent dining segment.
LAX airline catering, Gate Gourmet, LSG Sky Chefs, Flying Food Group, runs FT900 flight-types for in-flight meal production. Scheduled maintenance is contractual in that segment; emergency service happens when a belt jams during a production window. Convention-center kitchens at LA Convention Center, Long Beach Convention Center, and the Anaheim Convention Center run rack-conveyor and flight-type Hobarts during event weeks.

Hobart dishwasher repair, frequently asked
Are you an authorized Hobart service provider?
No, we're independent, not Hobart Corp-affiliated. That's a straightforward answer and it matters for your decision. Hobart Corp direct runs its own Los Angeles service office out of their 125-location, 1,500-tech national network, they're who you call for warranty work, new-install commissioning, or large contract accounts. For out-of-warranty repair, emergency after-hours calls, weekends, and situations where the Hobart Corp dispatch window is 24β48 hours and your kitchen needs a tech today, we're the independent alternative. $120 diagnostic, 2-hour response window in LA, stocked parts for the common AM16 and LXe failure modes. If you have an active warranty or service contract with Hobart Corp, use it first. For everything else, call us.
What's the difference between Hobart AM16, LXe, CLe, and FT900?
Four different machine classes for four different operation scales. AM16 and AM16VLT are door-type dishwashers, single-rack high-volume door machines typical at mid-to-large LA restaurants, hotel banquet prep, and busy catering kitchens. LXe and LXeR are undercounter, the rackless LXeR fits under a bar or prep counter for glass and small-ware; LXe is the standard undercounter rack machine. CLeR, CLeN, and CL44eN are rack conveyors, rack-conveyance line machines for high-volume institutional cafeterias and large hotel operations. FT900 is flight-type, the continuous belt conveyor at the top of the range, used in stadium commissaries, airline flight kitchens, and convention-center kitchens. Each class has different controls, different pump architectures, and different common failure modes. Call with the model number and we'll tell you whether we stock the parts.
Can you service my Hobart during warranty?
Warranty service typically requires an authorized Hobart service provider, so warranty work generally goes through Hobart Corp direct. We can still come out for a paid emergency diagnostic if you need a unit running before Hobart Corp's dispatch window, but the repair itself would need to be coordinated with Hobart Corp to preserve warranty coverage. Once the warranty period ends, our scope opens fully, parts, labor, full repair. That's the majority of Hobart service calls we run in LA: out-of-warranty machines where Hobart Corp direct is quoting $300β$400 just to come out and the operator wants a reasonable independent option.
How old is too old for Hobart repair?
Age isn't the trigger, parts availability is. ITW's parts chain on Hobart commercial dishwashers is strong for 20-year-old units because ITW deliberately keeps parts in production long after a model line is superseded. Our honest cutoff is usually 25+ years, and even then, it's usually a specific electronic control board or obsolete proprietary part that pushes us toward replace-not-repair. AM16 units from the early 2000s still have parts flowing. LXe undercounters from the mid-2000s still have parts. We've serviced 22-year-old Hobarts in LA where every common part was available. The question isn't 'how old,' it's 'which specific part needs replacing.'
Do you stock Hobart parts on trucks?
Common parts yes. Our trucks carry rinse arm spray bearings, booster heater contactors, wash pump seals, chemical dispenser solenoids, door gaskets, thermostats, and fill solenoids for AM16, LXe, and common CL conveyor models. That covers maybe 60β70% of the Hobart calls we dispatch. Specialty parts, specific control boards, proprietary conveyor drive motors, CL44e tank heaters, FT900 flight-type modules, come from the ITW parts network, typically 2β4 business days to LA out of the Troy, Ohio plant. Our techs diagnose on the first visit and order the specialty parts at that point if needed, rather than coming out twice.
Do you service used Hobart units bought from restaurant liquidations?
Yes, this is a common LA scenario. The restaurant liquidation pipeline (restaurantequipment.bid, used-equipment brokers) moves a lot of Hobart inventory every time an operator closes. The challenge with a used Hobart is not knowing the service history, was the unit run hard in a 400-cover-a-night chain, or light-duty in a neighborhood spot, and what did the previous operator skip on preventive maintenance? We offer a pre-purchase inspection service for buyers negotiating used Hobart deals, a paid $120 diagnostic visit where we pull the front panel, test wash and rinse pressures, inspect the tank and wash-arm condition, verify booster operation, and give a written condition report. Protects against walking into a $2,500 hidden-repair scenario.
