Series-aware diagnosis
The Fire Magic lineup, and what fails on each.
Fire Magic uses a clearer naming hierarchy than most premium grill brands. Echelon Diamond is the flagship; Aurora is mid-premium; Choice is entry premium; the Regal/Custom/Monarch/Elite legacy lines pre-date the 2014 platform reset. Diagnostics differ by line.
Echelon Diamond Series (current flagship, 2014 onwards)
The flagship line: E660s (30"), E790s (36"), E1060s (48"). All built-in or portable variants available, Diamond and Diamond Black aesthetic options. Hot surface ignition (110V) standard. Magic Window in the hood. Diamond Sear cooking grids included.
Common failures by year:
- Years 4 to 7: Hot surface igniter element burnout. Universal Fire Magic igniter OEM 3199-64 fits all Echelon E660/E790/E1060 plus Echelon side burners. Replacement is straightforward.
- Years 5 to 8: Wire harness extension failure on built-in Echelon (OEM connects transformer pigtail to main harness). Replaced with current 24182-64 successor part.
- Years 7 to 10: Backburner assembly (rotisserie zone). Different parts catalog for E790 (2012 and newer) versus E660 pre-2012. We stock both.
- Years 8 to 12: Burner tube corrosion on coastal installs. Brass tubes typically last longer than stainless on coastal grills (counter-intuitive but true).
- Years 10 plus: Master switch (digital LED system on Echelon Diamond) pits from current load over time.
Aurora Series (mid-premium, hot surface ignition since 2015)
A660 (30") and A790 (36"). Lower BTU output than Echelon, simpler control system, no Magic Window, no LED hood lights. Good build quality. Common failures: hot surface ignition same as Echelon, simpler wire harness, less expensive replacement parts overall.
Choice Multi-User
Entry premium for community and multi-residential applications. Built tough, simpler architecture. Failures concentrate at gas valves and ignition modules.
Legacy lines (pre-2014)
Regal 1, Regal 2, Custom 1, Custom 2, Monarch, Elite Magnum. Used different ignition technology: battery-powered spark modules and rotary spark igniters. We service these but parts availability varies. Some flavor grids and cooking grids are still available; ignition components may require upgrade kits to current architecture. Backburner electrode kits still in production (legacy single-rod design, OEM available).
Searing Station and Power Burner accessories
Single and Double Searing Station: high-heat sear units that mount adjacent to main grill. Sear burner failure at 5 to 8 years is common (high-cycle thermal stress accelerates wear on these high-BTU units). Replacement straightforward; we use S21765Y sear flash tube on the Diamond-series sear lines and S21750Y main flash tube on standard Echelon zones.
Diamond Power Burner: high-BTU dedicated burner unit. Different orifice catalog (NG vs LP). Failures: orifice clogging from cooking spillover, regulator drift.

In rough order of frequency on Fire Magic service calls:
- Hot surface igniter failure (Echelon E660s/E790s/E1060s). Element burnt out. Universal OEM 3199-64 replacement. $180-280 part, 30-minute install.
- Wire harness extension corrosion. Moisture intrusion at connector. Replacement 24182-64 successor. $120-180 part.
- Master switch failure (Echelon Diamond LED system). Switch pits from continuous current draw. Replacement procedure documented in Fire Magic service manual; we follow it.
- Burner replacement (any series). Cast stainless burner tubes pinhole at 8 to 12 years. Per-zone replacement.
- Backburner assembly failure. Rotisserie zone igniter, electrode wire, or full backburner unit. Different parts for E790 (2012+) versus E660 (pre-2012).
- Searing Station sear burner replacement. High thermal cycling causes sear burner failure at 5 to 8 years. Common repair on outdoor kitchens with Fire Magic searing stations.
- Power Burner orifice cleaning/replacement. NG and LP orifices have different specs; we carry both.
- Magic Window glass replacement. Distinctive Fire Magic hood feature. Replacement glass available for E1060, E790, E660, Aurora A660 and A790.
- Power supply / transformer issues (built-in installs). Pre-2009 vs post-2009 transformer connectors are different. Identify vintage before ordering.
- Cooking grid replacement. Diamond Sear stainless or Porcelain Cast Iron. Lifetime warranty on Diamond Sear (parts only, labor billable).

Beverly Hills, Fire Magic Echelon Diamond E790s built-in (2018 install)
Owner called Wednesday, no spark on left main burner, others working. Tech tested hot surface igniter element on left zone: open circuit. Replaced with universal OEM 3199-64. Tested ignition cycle. Working. Total: $120 plus $215 part plus 30 minutes = $365.
Pacific Palisades, Fire Magic Echelon E1060s portable (2015 install)
Multi-zone ignition issue. Diagnosed: master switch on Echelon Diamond LED panel had pitted from corrosion (coastal salt air at 9 years). Replaced master switch per Fire Magic service procedure. Tested all ignition zones, LED hood lights. Working. Total: $120 plus $310 part plus 1.5 hours = $610.
Newport Beach, Fire Magic Echelon E660s built-in (2019 install)
Backburner not lighting. Tested rotisserie burner: igniter electrode failed. Replaced single backburner electrode kit (E660 2012+ catalog). Total: $120 plus $135 part plus 45 min = $300.
Calabasas, Fire Magic Echelon Diamond E790s with Double Searing Station (2017 install)
Sear station not working, main grill fine. Both sear burners failed at 7 years (high thermal cycling on these high-BTU units is hard on burners). Replaced both sear burners simultaneously while the unit was apart. Total: $120 plus $580 (2 sear burners) plus 1.5 hours = $850.
Bel Air, Fire Magic Aurora A660 built-in (2016 install)
Won't ignite at all. Diagnosed: wire harness extension corroded at the transformer connection. Replaced 24182-64 successor harness. Tested ignition. Working. Total: $120 plus $145 part plus 45 min = $310. Customer's previous shop had quoted "needs new transformer plus new wire harness, $850."

We don't do: new Fire Magic grill installation (warranty installs go through authorized RH Peterson dealer network); custom Fire Magic cabinetry modification (metal fabricator trade); wood-fired pizza oven inserts (we do gas-fired only).
If your grill is under Fire Magic warranty (most Echelon components carry 1-year, 5-year, or lifetime warranties depending on the part: burners and stainless are typically lifetime), we recommend going through Fire Magic's authorized dealer network first. Fire Magic grill repair questions.
My Fire Magic Echelon won't ignite on one zone. What's wrong?
On hot surface ignition Echelon (2014 onwards Diamond, all current models), the most common cause is the hot surface igniter element burning out. Universal part OEM 3199-64 fits all Echelon E660, E790, E1060. Replacement is 30 minutes. Pre-2009 Echelon used different ignition (9V battery and transformer); diagnosis depends on vintage.
How long do Fire Magic grills last?
With proper repair, Echelon Diamond grills regularly hit 18 to 25 years. Cast brass and stainless burners on the Diamond series last 10 to 15 plus years. Magic Window glass and Diamond Sear cooking grids have lifetime warranties; the grill outlasts most kitchen remodels.
Is the universal igniter (3199-64) really universal?
For Echelon series (E660, E790, E1060), yes. Same part fits all sizes and all built-in or portable variants. Also fits Echelon-style side burners. Magnum-style older grills require the included Molex-to-dual-spade adapter (supplied with the part).
Can you fix a 2010 Fire Magic Regal or Monarch?
Yes. Legacy series (Regal 1/2, Custom 1/2, Monarch, Elite Magnum) used battery-powered spark modules and rotary spark igniters. Some legacy parts are still available; some require upgrade to current ignition architecture. We diagnose and quote what's needed.
My Diamond Sear cooking grid is rusted. Is it covered?
Diamond Sear 304 stainless cooking grids carry lifetime warranty against rust and warping. Process: we document the failure, you submit warranty claim through Fire Magic, replacement grids ship to you. We can do all of this on the service call. Labor for installing replacement grids is separately billable but minimal (15 to 20 min).
What's the difference between Echelon Diamond and Aurora?
Echelon Diamond is the flagship line: high-BTU output, Magic Window in hood, LED hood lighting, master switch system, Diamond Sear cooking grids included. Aurora is mid-premium: same hot surface ignition (2015 onwards), same general construction, but no Magic Window, simpler controls, no LED system. Both excellent grills. Aurora repairs typically cost less because parts are simpler.
