True Refrigeration, America's #1 independent commercial refrigeration maker

Every other top-tier commercial refrigeration brand our techs service has been through a corporate roll-up in the last five years. Kolpak, Master-Bilt, Nor-Lake, Delfield, Manitowoc, Beverage-Air, Lincoln, Pitco, Convotherm, Merrychef, all Ali Group now, most via the $3.5 billion Welbilt acquisition that closed in July 2022. Traulsen is ITW. Hoshizaki is Japanese-owned. True Refrigeration is the one holdout. Trulaske family, three generations, O'Fallon Missouri headquarters with a second plant in Abilene Texas, never sold.

That's a positioning fact, not a marketing line. It matters for service because True's parts supply channel has been uninterrupted through the entire commercial refrigeration consolidation wave, we don't call a distributor and get told "the transition team is still routing orders" the way we do on some post-2022 Ali brands. And it matters for the LA operator who bought a True reach-in in 2012 and wants it serviced in 2026: the company that built it is still the company that stocks parts for it, using the same model platforms and the same service documentation that shipped with it.

We service True commercial refrigeration across LA County, Orange County, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside, every week, across every product line True builds. The commercial-refrigeration combo page goes deeper on the specific failure modes, model-level technical detail, and service workflow. For True Residential (the True-brand refrigerator, beverage center, and wine cooler line that's a separate product family on the residential side), see the True Residential refrigerator repair page.

What our techs fix across the True product family

Pattern recognition after running True service calls across LA back-of-house equipment every week. The failure modes cluster by product line because the platform architecture is shared across True's commercial family.

Reach-in and undercounter (T, TUC)

Door gasket compression loss first, the line cook notices fog rolling out harder than it used to on a Saturday service, or frost builds along the door jamb. Evaporator fan motor failures second, grinding bearing noise that preceded the failure by weeks in most cases. Compressor thermal overload trips third, almost always traced back to a clogged condenser coil at the bottom grille where LA kitchen dust and grease pack fast. We carry gaskets, common fan motor sizes, and hinge hardware on the truck.

Sandwich and prep tables (TSSU)

Prep tables work harder than any other True commercial product because the door and the cold-rail lid open hundreds of times per service window. Failure pattern: gasket wear on both the base door and the make-line rail, followed by drift on the rail temperature (the rail's evaporator is small and sensitive to airflow blockage), followed by condenser issues from grease migration. We see these at LA delis from Langer's-era institutional operators down to counter-service taquerias in East LA and Boyle Heights.

Glass-door merchandisers (GDM, TVM)

LED driver failure is the #1 call on GDM, the lighting driver sits inside the top frame, runs continuously, and fails quietly before the customer notices. Door hinge cartridge replacement is #2, thousands of customer opens per week at a 7-Eleven or Circle K chew through the hinge bushings in 18-36 months. Gasket replacement and condenser cleaning round out the top four. We keep GDM-specific parts on the truck because the call rate is high.

Back-bar and bottle coolers (THAC, TBB)

Back-bar coolers at LA bars and craft-cocktail operators run harder than reach-ins, open every 30 seconds during Friday and Saturday service. Our techs see gasket failure, door heater failures on freezer-side units, and increasingly R-290 propane refrigerant diagnostic work because True transitioned much of the THAC line to HC-suffix hydrocarbon refrigerant. That's the EPA 608 hydrocarbon endorsement specialty, not every commercial refrigeration tech holds it.

The True model map, T, TUC, TSSU, GDM, THAC, TDC

True's catalog runs about 40 distinct product families; in LA commercial kitchens, these are the six our techs service every week. Each lives in a different spot on the kitchen line and has a distinct refrigeration load profile.

T-series, reach-in upright

T-19, T-23, T-35, T-49, T-72 by interior cubic feet. The default walk-up commercial fridge. Single, two, and three-door configurations.

TUC, undercounter / worktop

Sits under the prep counter or as a worktop surface. Common on LA prep lines where vertical space is tight but cold storage at the make-line matters.

TSSU, sandwich / salad prep

Refrigerated base plus cold-rail lid at the make-line. The workhorse of LA deli, taqueria, sushi bar, and counter-service prep. The hardest-worked True product in our dispatch.

GDM / TVM, glass-door merchandiser

Beverage cooler, sandwich cooler, pass-through glass-door units. Convenience store and retail cluster , 7-Eleven, AMPM, Circle K, bodegas, specialty grocers.

THAC / TBB, back-bar and bottle cooler

Under-bar refrigeration for bottle storage and draft-beer adjunct cooling. Current production on R-290 propane refrigerant. LA bar, craft-cocktail, and restaurant-bar installations.

TDC, dual-temp display

Dual-temperature display case for retail and deli counters. Less common in LA back-of-house, more common in full-service deli counters and specialty food retail.

Full combo-level detail on each product family lives on the commercial refrigeration combo page. The combo covers model-by-model repair walkthroughs, error-code tables, and the refrigerant-transition map for each line.

Independent heritage, Trulaske family, O'Fallon Missouri, since 1945

Robert L. Trulaske Sr. founded True Manufacturing in St. Louis in 1945 to build a better commercial beverage cooler than anything coming out of the post-war industrial refrigeration market. Eighty years later, the company is still in the family, his grandchildren run it now, and the main plant moved out to O'Fallon Missouri decades ago with a second plant added in Abilene Texas. The executive team, the engineering team, the parts supply chain all sit in those two plants.

We put this section on the page because SERP content about True is consistently wrong about the ownership. Several competitor pages imply True is part of an industrial conglomerate or describe it as "a major commercial refrigeration brand" without noting it's independent. That's not accurate, and it's not a trivial distinction for the customer. When we quote a repair that involves ordering a part from the manufacturer, True's single channel out of Missouri has been reliable through the entire 2020-2022 industry consolidation. That's a practical service consideration our dispatch team values when sizing lead times on a repair quote.

True vs. Ali Group brands, what it means for service

Kolpak, Master-Bilt, Nor-Lake, Delfield, Beverage-Air, Manitowoc all share a parts distribution channel now under Ali North America. Parts from any of those brands arrive through the same distributor network, one account, one invoice. True parts come through True's own channel directly from O'Fallon or Abilene. For a single-True-fleet operator that's an advantage. For a mixed-fleet LA restaurant (True reach-in + Kolpak walk-in + Manitowoc ice + Champion dishwasher), the Ali single-vendor angle has real operational logic. Our techs work both ecosystems and quote accordingly.

R-290 propane refrigerant, True's current-production transition

The EPA AIM Act set phase-down deadlines on high-GWP hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants starting 2025, and True responded by transitioning much of its commercial reach-in, TSSU, GDM, and THAC catalog to R-290 propane (hydrocarbon refrigerant, designated "HC" in model suffixes). R-290 has a global warming potential near zero and is more energy-efficient than R-404A or R-448A at the temperatures these units run. True was ahead of the commercial market on the transition, by 2023 most current-production True commercial units shipped with R-290 as standard.

Servicing R-290 isn't a normal commercial refrigeration call. EPA 608 certification alone doesn't cover it , hydrocarbon refrigerants require an additional training endorsement because R-290 is flammable and the service process is different from HFC work. Charge volumes are small (usually under 150 grams per system), leak detection uses a hydrocarbon-specific detector, and any brazing on the refrigerant circuit requires a nitrogen purge to prevent ignition. Our techs hold the hydrocarbon endorsement; we track our certification renewals against True's current-production catalog, because the R-290 call rate only increases as the pre-2022 HFC-suffix units age out.

How to tell if your True unit is R-290

Check the serial plate inside the cabinet or on the back of the condensing unit. R-290 units list the refrigerant type explicitly (usually "R-290" with a charge weight in grams) and the model number usually ends in "HC" (e.g. T-49-HC, TSSU-48-HC, GDM-26-HC). Older units running R-404A or R-134a have no "HC" suffix and a larger charge weight. If the plate says R-290 or HC, confirm with your service provider before the repair visit that they hold hydrocarbon certification, it's a liability and insurance issue beyond just technical capability.

True in LA, restaurants, bars, convenience stores, delis we service

Our True dispatch map across the five SoCal counties. We service True commercial refrigeration in pretty much every category of LA foodservice operator, the brand cuts across independent restaurants, chain convenience stores, luxury Westside kitchens, and the hillside / Hollywood / Monterey Park / Downtown LA corridors where brand-specific "True near me" queries have been landing on our city pages without a dedicated brand destination until now.

Restaurants (T + TSSU + TUC)

Koreatown BBQ, Valley fast-casual, Westside farm-to-table, DTLA ghost kitchens, Hollywood Hills private-event kitchens, Monterey Park and San Gabriel Valley restaurant corridor. The T-series reach-in is the default; TSSU is the prep-line workhorse.

Delis and counter-service (TSSU)

Langer's-tier legacy operators, the East LA / Boyle Heights taqueria corridor, Avenida César Chávez deli row, Studio City lunch-counter operators, Century City corporate delis. TSSU prep tables run the heaviest dispatch rate per unit.

Convenience stores (GDM / TVM)

7-Eleven, AMPM, Circle K across LA county; independent liquor stores along Sunset, Vermont, and Whittier Blvd; bodegas and specialty grocers. GDM hinge and LED driver calls are our steadiest retail refrigeration dispatch volume.

Bars and cocktail lounges (THAC / TBB)

West Hollywood bar corridor, Silver Lake neighborhood bars, Arts District craft-cocktail rooms, Santa Monica and Hollywood nightlife. R-290 HC-suffix back-bar repair is an accelerating specialty as pre-2022 HFC units age out.

Grocers and specialty retail (GDM / TDC / T-series)

Independent specialty grocers, natural-food retail, Westside gourmet operators, specialty butchers. True dual-temp display cases (TDC) appear at the deli/prepared-food counter level.

Sibling LA brand roster

We also service Hoshizaki ice and reach-ins, the Beverage-Air Ali family, Kolpak walk-ins, and the rest of the LA commercial refrigeration roster, cross-referenced on the commercial refrigerator service hub and the commercial freezer service hub.

Service areas we cover for True commercial calls: Los Angeles County (including West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, Pasadena, Silver Lake, North Hollywood, Downtown LA, Hollywood Hills, Monterey Park), Orange County (including Irvine), Ventura County (including Thousand Oaks), San Bernardino, and Riverside.

True Refrigeration repair, frequently asked

Is True Refrigeration still American-owned?

Yes. True Manufacturing is the Trulaske family's 3rd-generation business, headquartered in O'Fallon, Missouri with a second plant in Abilene, Texas. Founded in 1945 by Robert L. Trulaske Sr. It has never been sold, not to Ali Group, not to ITW, not to Welbilt (now also Ali), not to Hoshizaki, not to a private-equity rollup. That matters for two reasons on a service call. First, parts supply is a single channel straight from O'Fallon, which has been uninterrupted through the industry consolidation wave of 2020-2022, our techs don't wait on distributor network transitions for True parts the way we do on some post-2022 Ali Group brands. Second, it explains the pricing premium: True holds its pricing at the higher end of the commercial refrigeration market, and we'll tell you that straight when we quote a repair-vs-replace call.

What's the difference between True T-series, TUC, and TSSU lines?

Three distinct product families that our techs service across LA back-of-house equipment lists every week. T-series is the reach-in upright, the default restaurant and institutional walk-up fridge, sized T-19, T-23, T-35, T-49, T-72 by interior cubic feet. TUC is the undercounter line, the worktop and undercounter refrigerators and freezers that live underneath the pass or the prep counter. TSSU is the sandwich-and-salad prep table line, the cold rail with a refrigerated base that sits at the make-line, the piece of equipment that runs about 80% of LA deli, taqueria, and fast-casual prep stations. Different footprints, different refrigeration loads, mostly shared component ecosystem (same compressor platform, same evaporator style, same door hardware family). Our diagnostic approach is identical across all three; the repair economics differ because prep tables see more door cycles per service window than a reach-in does.

Do you service True glass door merchandisers (GDM) for convenience stores?

Yes, GDM, TVM, and GDM-HC are a regular part of our dispatch to 7-Eleven, AMPM, Circle K, Food 4 Less, and independent bodega / liquor store chains across LA. The GDM line is True's glass-door merchandiser (beverage cooler, sandwich cooler, single/two/three-door pass-through). Common repair work: door hinge cartridge replacement after thousands of customer opens, LED lighting driver swaps, gasket replacement on the doors (the most common call), condenser coil cleaning (LA dust and ambient heat pack the condenser fins fast in exposed retail locations), evaporator fan motor replacement, and temperature controller drift. We carry GDM hinge kits, gaskets, and common fan motors on the truck.

Can you service True back-bar THAC coolers with R-290 propane refrigerant?

Yes. R-290 propane (chemical designation: hydrocarbon / HC-suffix True models) is the current-production refrigerant on new THAC and many other True commercial lines, True transitioned much of its commercial reach-in and back-bar catalog to R-290 ahead of the 2025 EPA AIM Act deadlines. R-290 work requires EPA 608 certification plus the hydrocarbon refrigerant training overlay that not every commercial refrigeration tech holds. Our team carries the hydrocarbon endorsement. The service reality: R-290 charge volumes are small (usually under 150 grams per system), leak detection protocol is different (flammable refrigerant, spark-control workspace), and the brazing process requires nitrogen purge. If your THAC unit's serial plate lists R-290 or HC suffix, confirm with your service provider that they hold the hydrocarbon cert before letting anyone touch the sealed system.

How long should a True reach-in last in an LA restaurant environment?

Our field answer after running True service calls across LA for years: 12 to 15 years is typical, 18 to 20 is achievable with bi-annual maintenance, and the single biggest predictor is condenser coil cleanliness in the kitchen environment. True builds the box to last 20-plus years structurally, the panels, the door hardware, the interior cabinet don't wear out. What wears out is the compressor, and what kills the compressor is dust, grease, and LA summer heat restricting condenser airflow. A Koreatown BBQ kitchen or a Valley fast-casual with grease-laden exhaust near the condenser runs closer to 10-12 years before compressor failure. A Westside or DTLA prep kitchen with clean ambient airflow runs 15-18 years on the same unit. We see the difference on every service call and we factor it into repair-vs-replace recommendations.

Do you stock True parts or order from O'Fallon?

Mixed. Our trucks carry True gaskets, common fan motors, door hinge cartridges, LED driver kits for the GDM line, and thermostats for T-series and TUC. That covers maybe 70% of the repair calls we run. For custom parts, specific compressor models, evaporator assemblies, electronic control boards for newer R-290 units, matched-pair condensing units, we order from True's O'Fallon MO or Abilene TX plants via the commercial parts supply channel. Lead time to LA is typically 2-4 business days on stocked parts, 5-7 days on made-to-order. Our techs will diagnose the failure on the first visit, quote the full job with parts availability noted, and schedule the return visit with your operations window. If the unit is holding temperature in a degraded state, we size the repair window against your service calendar rather than your service day.

What does True commercial refrigeration repair typically cost in LA?

Commercial diagnostic is $120, waived when you authorize the repair. Typical repair bands we invoice on True units across LA: door gasket replacement $180-$380 installed; GDM hinge cartridge replacement $240-$480; evaporator fan motor $320-$580; thermostat or electronic controller $220-$460; condenser coil deep cleaning $200-$380; TXV replacement $400-$780; refrigerant recharge (R-404A or R-290) $380-$820; compressor replacement $1,600-$3,800 on standard T-series (higher on larger THAC and custom condensing units). Full cost ranges are in our commercial refrigerator repair pricing guide. Our honest repair-vs-replace line on True: under $1,500 on a unit less than 10 years old, fix it, True equipment holds its value and the rest of the unit will outlive the repair. Over $3,000 on a unit 14-plus years old, we'll run the replacement math with you before recommending the compressor swap.

True commercial refrigerator down?

Same-day dispatch across LA and the five SoCal counties. $120 commercial diagnostic waived with the repair. EPA 608 + hydrocarbon certified for R-290 HC-suffix units.
