GE Appliance Repair
Southern California
01, About this service
GE Appliances is the most-installed brand in our service area. Service depth across all four tiers.
GE Appliances has the broadest US installed base of any appliance brand. In our five-county SoCal service area, GE is on more service tickets than any other brand, base-tier GE in production-builder homes across the Inland Empire and San Fernando Valley, GE Profile and Café in Westside and Orange County renovations, GE Monogram in luxury kitchens from Bel Air to Newport Coast. Our techs see GE products every day, across all four tiers, in every category GE makes.
Two GE-specific service realities shape how we approach every call. First, the Haier ownership transition (Haier acquired GE Appliances from General Electric in 2016 for $5.4 billion) didn't disrupt the parts supply chain or service network the way some homeowners expected, Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky stayed put, the engineering teams stayed put, and OEM parts availability is actually better than many competitors thanks to Haier's reinvestment. The brand operates effectively as the same US business it was before, with deeper capital backing. We service all GE Appliances products under the same parts network whether built before or after the transaction. Second, the RPWFE water filter ecosystem on Profile and Café refrigerators uses RFID communication between the filter and the refrigerator's sensor board, a quality-control mechanism that becomes a service item when the sensor board, the filter chip, or filter installation goes wrong. False "Leak Detected" errors are the most common GE refrigerator service call we run that didn't exist on pre-2014 GE refrigeration.
This page covers GE repair across all major appliance categories and all four tiers, base GE, Profile, Café, Monogram. Every service call gets a $89 residential diagnostic (applied toward the repair when work is approved), OEM parts where we can, and an honest written quote before any work begins.
02, GE refrigerator repair
GE refrigerators, RPWFE filter, control boards, ice maker.
GE refrigerators are everywhere in SoCal, French Door (PFE, PYE, GFE), Side-by-Side (GSS, GZS), bottom-freezer (GBE), top-freezer (GTS), Counter-Depth (PYE counter-depth, Café CYE), and Monogram built-in columns (ZIP, ZIR refrigerator and freezer columns). The service tree splits by tier and by which version of the platform the unit uses, but three GE-specific failure modes drive most of our refrigerator calls.
The RPWFE water filter situation (read this before swapping filters)
Profile and Café refrigerators built since 2014 use the RPWFE water filter with an RFID chip that the refrigerator's sensor board reads to verify the filter is genuine and to monitor filter life. When the sensor board can't read the chip, generic filter installed, chip damaged in shipping, filter not seated correctly, or the sensor board itself failing, the refrigerator displays "Leak Detected" or "Replace Water Filter" and locks the water valve. About 30% of these calls resolve when we install a fresh genuine GE RPWFE filter and confirm the white-and-gray housing alignment is correct. About 50% trace to the sensor board itself (part WR55X35905 on most platforms; replacement $185-$285 with labor). The remaining 20% are filter housing or harness issues. Generic filters and bypass plugs are not a long-term fix, bypass turns off filter monitoring entirely, and generic filters increasingly trip the same RFID rejection.
Beyond RPWFE, GE refrigerator service tree centers on three areas:
- Main control board (year 5-9): GE refrigerator boards have a documented pattern of solder-joint failures on resistors and switching components from thermal cycling. Symptoms range from intermittent cooling to complete cooling loss to display anomalies. The bigger risk: a failing board can command the compressor incorrectly and damage it. When we see a refrigerator with cooling issues and the compressor ohms-out fine, the board is the next suspect. Replacement $345-$525.
- Ice maker assembly (year 4-7): GE ice makers (most common: WR30X10093 / WR30X30309 modular assemblies) have a typical service life of 5-7 years on average use. Common failure modes: optics-board fault (low ice condition not detected, no production cycle initiated), water inlet valve not opening, motor-module mechanical failure. Replacement $245-$385 depending on model.
- Evaporator fan motor + condenser fan motor (year 6-10): Standard wear items on any refrigerator. GE motors are decent quality but not standout, replacement at $245-$385 typical when one starts squealing or cycling intermittently.
- Door gasket (year 8-12): Especially on Profile and Café French Door units in coastal homes (Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Newport Beach, Laguna). Replacement $180-$280.
Monogram built-in column refrigeration (ZIR, ZIP) is a different service conversation, these are 84-inch tall, fully-integrated units competing directly with Sub-Zero. Service tree includes the same ice maker / fan / control board items but adds dual-evaporator system specifics and the substantial complexity of pulling a column unit from a custom cabinet for any major work. Monogram column work is dispatched only to techs trained on built-in refrigeration.
03, GE laundry repair
GE washers and dryers, top-load workhorses, front-load Profile spec.
GE has more US laundry market share than any single competitor and a larger top-load presence than most. Two architecture families dominate our GE laundry service mix: GTW-series top-load washers (the higher-volume install base) and GFW-series front-load (Profile and Café tiers). Different service trees, different failure patterns.
GE top-load washers (GTW220, GTW465, GTW685, GTW720) are simpler-architecture machines than the Korean front-loaders, agitator or impeller, mechanical-feeling controls on base models, electronic on Profile. Service patterns:
- Lid switch / lid lock (year 3-6): Most common GE top-load failure. Won't start spin, wont start at all, or starts then stops. Replacement $145-$215.
- Drive belt or motor coupler (year 5-8): Won't agitate or won't spin. Belt + tension service $185-$285.
- Drain pump (year 6-9): Won't drain, leaves clothes wet. $245-$385.
- Water inlet valve (year 7-10): Won't fill, fills slowly, or fills when off. $185-$285.
- Suspension rod kit (year 9+): Excessive vibration on spin cycles. Suspension rods (GE-specific top-load damping) wear over time. $245-$385.
GE front-load (GFW400, GFW550, GFW650) is more comparable to LG or Samsung front-load architecture. Service tree adds: drain pump, door boot (year 8-10), bearing service (year 8-12, bearing + drum seal as a set, $585-$880 with labor), main control board. Front-load mold/odor management on GE follows the same homeowner-driven prevention pattern as any front-load (door open between cycles, monthly tub-clean cycle).
GE dryers (GTD33, GTD45, GTD75, Profile GFD55, GFD85) are middle-of-the-pack reliability. Most calls trace to thermal fuse blown from vent blockage (always inspect the vent before replacing the fuse, thermal fuse alone fails again within weeks if vent isn't cleared), heating element burnout at year 8-12, drum belt + idler pulley wear at year 6-9, and thermistor drift causing intermittent heating. Gas dryers add the gas valve coil failure mode at year 9-12.
04, Other GE appliances
GE ranges, wall ovens, dishwashers, microwaves.
Outside refrigeration and laundry, GE's appliance breadth is the broadest in the US market. Service depth varies by category, Monogram pro-ranges and built-in cooking are specialty work; base-tier GE ranges and dishwashers are bread-and-butter service.
GE Ranges (gas + electric)
Base GE (JB, JGB, JGS), Profile (PGB, PGS), Café (CGS, CHS, freestanding pro-style), Monogram (ZGP pro-range). Common service: surface igniter (gas), bake/broil element (electric), oven temperature sensor, control board, oven door hinge + spring. F1, F3, F4 codes diagnosed with sensor + board distinction.
GE Wall Ovens
Single (JT, JK, PT) and double (JKD, PKD, PT) wall ovens across base and Profile tiers; Café CT-series with brushed-finish handles; Monogram ZET pro-built-in. Common service: door hinge + spring (heavy door wear at year 7-10), bake/broil element, oven temperature sensor, control board, latch motor (self-clean models). GE wall oven repair page →
GE Dishwashers
GDT (base), GDP and PDP (Profile), CDT (Café), ZDT (Monogram fully-integrated). Common service: drain pump, water inlet valve, control panel/keypad (F7 errors), heating element/thermistor (HE), door latch + spring, dispenser assembly. Café CDT brushed-finish kick plates and door handles are configured-to-order; longer lead time than functional parts.
GE Microwaves
Over-the-range (JVM, JNM, PVM Profile, CVM Café), countertop (JES, PEM Profile), built-in (JX series trim kits, ZSC Monogram). Common service: door switch (3-switch system; one fails, microwave won't start), magnetron, turntable motor, charcoal/grease filters (consumables). Monogram speed-cook variants add convection element complexity.
GE Cooktops
Gas (JGP, PGP, CGP), electric coil (JP), induction (PHP Profile, CHP Café). Common service: surface igniter (gas), burner switch, infinite-switch control (electric coil), induction module (induction). Induction repair is specialty, fewer techs trained, parts are higher-cost.
GE Monogram (luxury tier)
Built-in column refrigeration (ZIP/ZIR), pro-style ranges (ZGP, ZDP), wall ovens (ZET, ZSC speed-oven), warming drawers, fully-integrated dishwashers (ZDT). Service is dispatched only to techs trained on Monogram built-in work. Higher parts cost, longer lead times, but the engineering and component quality justifies the tier.
05, GE error codes decoded
What the codes on your GE actually mean.
GE's error codes vary by appliance and platform, older units use F-codes, newer use letter combinations on display. The common ones we translate on every service visit:
Reset procedure for any GE appliance showing an error: kill the breaker for a full 5 minutes (longer than most appliances need to fully discharge filter capacitors). About 10-15% of error codes clear at this step at no parts cost. If the code returns, that's the diagnostic.
06, Models we service most often
GE models in heavy SoCal service rotation.
A representative sample of GE model families our techs service routinely. Not exhaustive, GE's catalog is the broadest in the US, but covers the units that show up most often on our route across all four tiers.

07, Pricing
What GE appliance repair costs in Southern California.
Diagnostic is $89, applied toward the repair. Labor and parts quoted in writing before any work begins. These ranges reflect typical 2024-2025 GE repair pricing across our service mix, base GE through Café. Monogram premium uplift noted separately.
Café finish-matched cosmetic items (brushed bronze handles, matte white panels) are priced at OEM and run 10-15% above functional equivalents because they're configured-to-order. Monogram premium uplift: 20-35% above standard band on parts; column-refrigeration major work runs significantly higher because of the access complexity. We tell you the model-specific cost differential before authorization.

11, FAQ
GE appliance repair, common questions.
Is GE Appliances still American? I heard it was sold to a Chinese company.
Half-true. GE Appliances was sold by General Electric to Haier (Chinese consumer-electronics conglomerate) in 2016 for $5.4 billion. Operationally, GE Appliances still runs as a US business unit headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, most of the engineering, manufacturing (Appliance Park in Louisville is one of the largest appliance plants in North America), and warranty service stayed in place. The brand and the products continued under the GE name with minimal disruption. From a repair standpoint, parts availability and OEM supply are unchanged from pre-2016, better than some competitors, in fact, because Haier's investment kept Appliance Park modernized. We service all GE Appliances products under the same parts network whether the unit was built before or after the Haier transaction.
What's the difference between GE, GE Profile, GE Café, and GE Monogram?
Four tiers in the same family, increasing in price and feature density. GE (base line), value-tier appliances with the broadest US distribution; reliable workhorses, no design pretense. GE Profile, premium consumer tier, more advanced controls, better fit-and-finish, smart features. GE Café, design-forward premium; same engineering platform as Profile in many cases but with customizable hardware (brushed bronze, brushed copper, matte white finishes), targeted at design-conscious renovators. GE Monogram, luxury tier competing with Sub-Zero and Wolf; built-in refrigeration, professional ranges, fully integrated columns. Service tree differs, base GE and Profile share most parts; Café shares with Profile but has finish-specific cosmetic items; Monogram has dedicated parts and uses heavier-duty components throughout.
My GE refrigerator says "Leak Detected" but there's no leak. What's going on?
That's the RPWFE water filter system flagging an RFID communication issue, not an actual leak. Newer GE refrigerators (Profile and Café especially, 2014+ manufacture) use the RPWFE filter that contains an RFID chip; the refrigerator's sensor board reads the chip to verify a genuine GE filter is installed and to monitor filter life. When the sensor can't read the chip, generic filter installed, chip damaged, or sensor board failing, the system locks the water valve and displays "Leak Detected" or "Replace Water Filter" depending on model. Diagnostic order: (1) confirm OEM RPWFE filter is properly seated (white and gray housing parts must align). (2) Try a new genuine GE RPWFE filter, about 30% resolve here. (3) If the error persists across two genuine filters, the sensor board (part WR55X35905 on most models) needs replacement. We don't recommend the bypass plug as a long-term fix; bypassing turns off filter monitoring entirely.
GE refrigerator main control board, how often do these actually fail?
More often than they should, honestly. GE refrigerator main control boards have a documented pattern of solder-joint failure on certain components, specifically resistors and relays that handle compressor and fan switching. The failure mode: a solder joint cracks from thermal cycling over years of operation, the affected component loses contact intermittently, and the symptoms range from intermittent cooling to complete cooling loss to weird display behavior. Year 5-9 is the most common window. The bigger problem: a failing control board can damage the compressor if the compressor is being commanded incorrectly (over-current or constantly cycling). When we diagnose a GE refrigerator with cooling issues and the compressor itself ohms-out fine, the board is usually the next suspect. Replacement runs $345-$525 with labor; significantly cheaper than letting the compressor cook.
What does an F1 error code mean on my GE oven?
F1 on a GE oven is a watchdog circuit fault, a safety system that's detected something out of normal operating range on the electronic control board. Most common cause is a failing control board itself (often the failure that triggered the safety interrupt). Less commonly: a stuck membrane keypad button (the keypad is wired into the control board; constant pressure on a key can register as a fault), or a temperature-sensor short circuit that the watchdog interpreted as runaway. Diagnostic order: (1) full breaker reset for 5 minutes, about 10% clear here. (2) If F1 returns immediately on power-up, it's the control board (replacement $345-$525). (3) If F1 returns only when a specific function is selected, it's likely a keypad fault (membrane keypad replacement $245-$345). On Monogram ovens, F1 has the same meaning but the parts cost runs higher because Monogram boards are more expensive.
What's an F7 error on my GE dishwasher?
F7 on a GE dishwasher is a keypad or control panel fault. The most common scenario: one of the membrane buttons is stuck (debris under the keypad, accumulated moisture causing micro-shorts, or aging adhesive on the keypad backing causing a button to register as held-down). The control board sees a button pressed for an abnormally long time and trips the F7 safety interrupt. Diagnostic order: (1) full reset (breaker off 5 minutes), clears the latched fault. (2) Visually inspect every keypad button for residue, stickiness, or visible damage; gentle clean with damp microfiber and dry thoroughly. (3) If F7 returns, the keypad/control panel assembly needs replacement ($285-$445). Less commonly, a failing main control board can also throw F7, distinguishable by other symptoms (random function selection, won't power on at all). About 60% of F7 calls resolve at the keypad assembly.
Are GE Café and GE Profile really worth more than base GE?
Honest answer depends on what you're paying for. GE base-tier appliances (GTW, GTD, GFW washers; GTS refrigerators; older JB ranges) are reliable, no-frills units at competitive price points, they hold up well for 12-15 years on standard usage. GE Profile pays for better controls, smart features (PFE/PYE refrigerators with Wi-Fi, ThinQ-equivalents on cooking), and better fit-and-finish; engineering platform is largely shared with base GE but the perceived-quality bump is real. GE Café is the design tier, same engineering as Profile in most categories, but customizable hardware finishes (brushed bronze, copper, matte white) command a meaningful premium for the look. For a renovation where the kitchen design is the priority, Café is worth it; for pure function, Profile is the value sweet-spot. GE Monogram is a different conversation, luxury tier, built-in refrigeration columns, professional ranges, properly competes with Sub-Zero/Wolf and is priced accordingly.
Do you carry GE OEM parts on the truck?
Common wear parts for GE refrigerators, washers, dryers, and ranges are stocked on our trucks: refrigerator door gaskets, water inlet valves, ice maker assemblies, evaporator fan motors, RPWFE filters; washer drain pumps, lid switches, drive belts (top-load), door boots (front-load); dryer thermal fuses, thermistors, drum belts, idler pulleys; range surface igniters, oven bake/broil elements, oven temperature sensors. Less common parts, main control boards, specific Monogram components, RPWFE sensor boards, come from authorized GE distribution, usually 1-3 day lead. GE Café finish-matched cosmetic items (brushed bronze door handles, matte white panels) sometimes have longer lead times because they're configured-to-order. We confirm parts availability and lead time during the diagnostic visit before quoting.
How much does GE appliance repair cost in LA?
