Beverage-Air, the full Ali Group commercial refrigeration line
Beverage-Air was founded in 1944 in New Jersey, moved through Specialty Equipment Companies in the late 1980s, and landed under Ali Group in 1991. Today the headquarters sits in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Beverage-Air anchors the Ali North America commercial refrigeration roster, it's the cross-cluster brand, the one that shows up in reach-in, back-bar, undercounter, display, and prep-table form-factors in the same LA restaurant. When an LA operator asks us for a single brand that can cover four or five equipment slots in the kitchen and bar, Beverage-Air is the answer about 60% of the time.
It's mid-market positioning, not premium. True and Traulsen sit at the top of the commercial refrigeration market with pricing that reflects it; Beverage-Air targets the middle, price-competitive for a restaurant building out a new kitchen, reliable enough for 12-plus years of service with normal maintenance, serviceable through the Ali parts network. The operators who chose Beverage-Air for their original fit-out typically chose it for the same reason our techs service it: it's straightforward equipment that holds up to a real LA kitchen workload.
Model-by-model repair detail, error codes, and specific failure walkthroughs live on the Beverage-Air commercial refrigeration combo page. This hub covers the positioning, the Ali family context, the LA customer segments, and the seven most-asked-about questions our techs get on Beverage-Air calls.
What our techs fix across the Beverage-Air family
Six product families, six distinct failure patterns. Pattern recognition from running Beverage-Air calls across LA commercial kitchens and bars every week.
Reach-ins, MT, KR, KF upright configurations
Door gasket first (frost ring at the jamb, fog rolling out harder than it used to), evaporator fan motor second (bearing noise that telegraphed the failure for weeks), compressor thermal overload trip third (almost always traced back to a condenser coil packed with LA kitchen dust and grease). We carry gaskets and common fan motor sizes on the truck. The MT mega-top reach-in runs a slightly different condensing package and is our more common "call back in 6-9 months" unit because the rooftop-style condenser fouls faster in grease-heavy Koreatown and Valley environments.
Back-bar coolers, HR and BM bottle coolers
Our highest-door-cycle commercial refrigeration product. At an LA bar running Friday and Saturday service, an HR back-bar door opens hundreds of times across a shift. Hinge cartridge wear in 18-24 months at that cadence, gasket compression loss at 12-18 months, door heater failure on freezer-variant units, condenser clogs accelerated by alcohol-residue airflow. We see these fail during Friday service and we dispatch them at top-priority commercial rate because the inventory and revenue loss compound by the hour.
Undercounter, UCR and UCF worktop and drawer units
Lives under the prep counter or at the make-line. Failure pattern skews toward mechanical, door hinge failure from the repeated bend-down-and-open motion, drawer slide wear on drawer-configured units, and gasket damage from closing into a prep bowl or a meat pan. Refrigeration-side failures are less frequent than on HR back-bars because the environment is cleaner, but when the compressor goes the replacement cost matters because the unit is often difficult to pull from under a built-in counter.
Display cases and glass-door merchandisers, DR and MM series
LED driver failure is the signature call on glass-door units, the driver sits in the top frame, runs continuously, fails quietly. Gasket replacement and hinge work follow. At LA convenience stores, delis, and specialty groceries, DR display cases also see accelerated condenser wear from exposed-retail ambient conditions (dust infiltration, customer proximity, extended door-open windows).
Sandwich and prep tables, SP, SPE, SPED lines
Same functional category as True's TSSU. The make-line cold rail fails first (small evaporator, sensitive to airflow blockage from pan placement), base-door gasket second, refrigerant drift third on units over eight years old. Our techs carry rail-specific parts for Beverage-Air's SPE and SPED generations because the call rate on prep tables at LA delis, sushi counters, and taqueria lines is the highest of any Beverage-Air product family.
Freezer variants, the -F-suffix catalog
Beverage-Air runs freezer variants across most of its reach-in, back-bar, and undercounter lines (model suffix "F" or dedicated freezer series designation). Freezer failure dynamics differ from cooler: door heater wear to prevent jamb-ice, defrost cycle failures, and compressor thermal trips from the harder workload. We cover these under the same commercial diagnostic structure as the refrigerator side.
Product family map, SP, HR, UCR, DR, MT, CF, and freezer variants
Where each Beverage-Air product line sits in the LA kitchen or bar layout. The commercial combo page goes deeper on model-specific repair workflows; this is the map.
SP / SPE / SPED, sandwich & salad prep
Make-line refrigerated base with cold-rail lid. LA deli, sushi bar, taqueria, counter-service prep. Highest dispatch rate per unit across the Beverage-Air catalog.
HR / BM, horizontal back-bar coolers
Under-bar bottle coolers and draft-beer adjunct units. Runs behind LA bars and cocktail lounges. Highest door-cycle count in the BA catalog.
UCR / UCF, undercounter reach-ins
Undercounter worktop and drawer configurations. Lives under the prep counter where vertical space is tight. Mechanical failure modes dominate.
DR / MM, display & merchandiser
Glass-door merchandisers for delis, convenience stores, specialty groceries. LED driver + hinge + gasket are the top three call types.
MT / KR / KF, upright reach-ins
Walk-up reach-in refrigerators and freezers sized 1, 2, and 3 doors. MT mega-top variant runs a rooftop-style condensing package that needs closer attention in grease environments.
CF, chef base / equipment stand
Refrigerated equipment stand for cooking-line integration. Sits under a griddle, char-broiler, or countertop cooking platform. Heat-load-heavy failure pattern.
Ali Group transition, 1991, and the post-2022 Welbilt expansion
Ali North America acquired the Beverage-Air parent chain in 1991. For about three decades after that, Beverage-Air sat in an Ali family that looked relatively stable, Champion dishwashers, CMA, Moyer Diebel, Victory, and a handful of other brands. Then in July 2022 Ali North America closed its $3.5 billion acquisition of Welbilt, and the Ali commercial foodservice family roughly doubled in size overnight.
The post-2022 Ali roster that now shares a parts distribution backbone with Beverage-Air: Delfield (reach-in + prep), Manitowoc (ice), Kolpak (walk-in), Master-Bilt (walk-in + ice-cream dipping), Nor-Lake (walk-in + scientific), Lincoln (conveyor oven), Garland (range + broiler), Pitco (fryer), Frymaster (fryer), Convotherm (combi oven), Merrychef (high-speed oven). That's roughly 12 brands under one parts supply channel, and the operational implication for an LA restaurant running a mixed Ali fleet is significant. One vendor account, one invoice, one dispatcher for the common parts.
The Ali single-vendor package for LA restaurants
A typical LA full-service restaurant built out in 2023-2026 is increasingly standardizing on Ali for the commercial foodservice package: Beverage-Air reach-in + Kolpak walk-in + Manitowoc ice machine + Champion dishwasher + Lincoln conveyor pizza oven + Pitco fryer. Six pieces of equipment, six Ali brands, one parts account. For the service-provider side, that means our dispatch can batch-order common parts and turn a multi-brand service visit faster than we can on a mixed-parent fleet. We cross-service all six , see Kolpak walk-in, Master-Bilt walk-in, and the BA combo page for deep detail on each.
Beverage-Air in LA, restaurants, bars, delis, convenience stores
Our Beverage-Air dispatch map across the five SoCal counties. Four operator segments drive the bulk of our service volume.
LA restaurant kitchens (SP, MT, UCR)
Koreatown, Westside, DTLA, Valley, San Gabriel Valley restaurant operators running Beverage-Air reach-ins and prep tables. The mid-market positioning fits the independent-restaurant fit-out economics.
Neighborhood LA bar cluster (HR, BM)
Silver Lake cocktail bars, DTLA rooftop bars, West Hollywood bar corridor, Arts District craft-cocktail operators, Valley and East LA neighborhood bars. HR back-bar coolers are the heaviest-cycle BA product in our LA dispatch.
Convenience stores + bodegas (DR, MM)
7-Eleven, AMPM, Circle K across LA; independent liquor stores on Sunset, Vermont, and Whittier corridors; bodegas and specialty groceries. DR glass-door merchandisers run hinge + LED + gasket calls on a steady rate.
Delis and counter-service (SP, SPE)
Langer's-tier legacy operators, the East LA / Boyle Heights taqueria corridor, Studio City deli row, Santa Monica lunch-counter operators. SP and SPE prep tables run the heaviest-dispatch BA product per unit.
Sibling Ali family on the same service call
We routinely roll up to a BA call and also handle Kolpak walk-in, Master-Bilt, and condensing-unit work on the same visit. Cross-referenced on the commercial refrigerator service hub.
Non-Ali sibling brand roster
We also service True Refrigeration (independent), Hoshizaki (Japanese-independent), and the rest of the LA commercial refrigeration roster, see the full list on the commercial service hub.
Service areas we cover for Beverage-Air commercial calls: Los Angeles County (including West Hollywood, Hollywood, Silver Lake, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, Pasadena, Studio City, DTLA, Arts District), Orange County (including Irvine), Ventura County (including Thousand Oaks), San Bernardino, and Riverside.
The SoCal Friday night problem, bar refrigeration failure dynamics
The most expensive Beverage-Air call we run is the Saturday-morning one, the bar manager opens up to a dead HR back-bar cooler, six cases of beer at ambient temperature, a service window closing in eight hours, and no spare unit on the floor. That call costs the bar thousands in pre-weekend re-stocking, pulled service, and customer-facing inventory loss. The Friday-evening version of the same call, when the cooler is warming gradually during Friday service and the bar manager catches it at 45°F instead of 55°F, costs a fraction of that. Both are the same unit failing at the same point in its lifecycle. The only variable is when the call comes in.
This is why our techs push LA bar operators into a preventive maintenance contract on Beverage-Air bar refrigeration specifically. Quarterly condenser cleaning, annual gasket replacement, semi-annual thermostat calibration, and refrigerant pressure check, the BA bar preventive visit runs $250-$380 per unit per visit and it keeps a 2023-vintage HR alive and reliable well past its 10-year design horizon. The math for the operator is straightforward, and our dispatch team runs the preventive route on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays so the bar is clean going into the Friday service window.
The failure modes that hit Friday
Door heater element failure on freezer-variant HRs (ice ridge forming at the jamb, doors binding on open). Gasket compression loss from thousands of shift-cycle opens. Condenser thermal overload on grease-packed fin spacing. Compressor start-relay failure on 8-plus-year units. All four are visible on a preventive maintenance visit before they become Friday-night emergencies. That's why we push the maintenance route instead of the emergency-response route.
Beverage-Air repair, frequently asked
Is Beverage-Air part of Ali Group or still independent?
Ali Group. Beverage-Air has been under Ali North America since 1991, originally as part of the Specialty Equipment Companies acquisition and now as a direct Ali brand headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The 2022 Welbilt acquisition by Ali North America ($3.5 billion) expanded the Ali family dramatically: post-2022, Beverage-Air sits alongside Delfield, Manitowoc, Kolpak, Master-Bilt, Nor-Lake, Lincoln, Garland, Pitco, Frymaster, Convotherm, and Merrychef under the same parent. That's the practical reason an LA restaurant running a mixed Ali fleet (Beverage-Air reach-in + Kolpak walk-in + Manitowoc ice + Champion dishwasher) now has a single parts supply channel. SERP content older than 2022 still describes Beverage-Air as part of a different corporate tree, most of it's out of date.
What's the difference between Beverage-Air SP, HR, and UCR lines?
Three different positions on the LA kitchen or bar line. SP (and the SPE / SPED variants) is the sandwich and salad prep table, the refrigerated base with the cold-rail lid at the make-line, same functional category as True's TSSU. HR is the horizontal back-bar refrigerator, the under-bar bottle cooler you see running behind an LA bar or cocktail lounge, doors open every 30 seconds during Friday service, highest door-cycle count in the BA catalog. UCR is the undercounter reach-in, sized for prep kitchens where vertical space is tight and refrigeration at the worktop matters more than walk-up storage. Our techs see failure modes cluster by product line: SP gasket wear on the rail lid, HR condenser clogs in the bar cabinet environment, UCR door hinge failure from repeated bend-down-and-open motion.
Do you service Beverage-Air bar equipment on Friday/weekend emergency?
Yes, and we prioritize Friday through Sunday bar calls because the failure dynamics are punishing. A Beverage-Air HR back-bar cooler at a Silver Lake cocktail bar or a DTLA rooftop goes down on Saturday night, and the operator loses the weekend. Our after-hours dispatch covers the West Hollywood bar corridor, Silver Lake and Echo Park neighborhood bars, DTLA cocktail rooms, Arts District craft-cocktail operators, Santa Monica and Hollywood nightlife. Commercial diagnostic $120 waived with repair; after-hours premium $180 is quoted before we dispatch so there's no surprise at invoice. Most Friday-night BA calls we run are gasket blowouts or compressor thermal trips from a dirty condenser, both fixable same-visit if we have the call by early evening.
Can you service Beverage-Air HR back-bar units under active warranty?
Depends on the warranty status and the failure mode. Beverage-Air ships new units with a standard 1-year parts and labor warranty plus 5-year compressor warranty through the authorized Beverage-Air service network. If your unit is inside the 1-year window and needs warranty work, that has to go through the authorized channel, we tell you that upfront rather than taking the call and creating a paperwork problem. If the unit is out of warranty, or the specific repair isn't covered (maintenance items, user-damage items, cosmetic components), we handle it as a standard paid repair. For the 5-year compressor specifically, call the Beverage-Air service locator first, the compressor warranty has to be processed through authorized parts supply. We'll still handle the diagnostic if you want a second-opinion quote.
How often should Beverage-Air bar undercounters be condenser-cleaned in an LA bar?
Quarterly. Every three months minimum. Bar undercounter coolers are the worst condenser-clog environment we service in LA, the condenser sits in a cabinet with minimal airflow, ambient temp rises during service, alcohol residue mixes with LA dust, and the fin spacing packs tight. We see HR and UCR units fail on compressor thermal overload trip at 18-24 months in a bar that never cleaned its condenser; the same unit in a bar on a quarterly maintenance contract holds temperature reliably past 10 years. The economics are straightforward: a $200 quarterly condenser cleaning beats a $1,800 compressor replacement every 2-3 years. Our preventive maintenance contract includes coil cleaning, door gasket check, refrigerant pressure verification, and thermostat calibration, billed per visit or annually.
Is Beverage-Air worth repairing at 10-12 years old?
Usually yes. Beverage-Air is mid-market positioning, not the premium tier of True or Traulsen, not the budget tier of Atosa or Avantco, and the build quality is sized for 12 to 15 years of commercial service with normal maintenance. Our field rule: on a BA unit 10-12 years old with a sub-$1,500 repair quote, fix it. Over $2,500 on a 12-plus-year-old unit with a failing compressor, we run the replacement math. Beverage-Air's current-production pricing is moderate, a replacement HR back-bar or SP prep table is usually $3,500-$6,500 installed, so the repair-to-replace threshold hits faster than it does on premium brands. We'll quote both sides honestly when the call is close.
What does Beverage-Air repair typically cost in LA?
Commercial diagnostic is $120, waived with authorized repair. Typical repair bands we invoice: door gasket $180-$360 installed; HR back-bar door hinge cartridge $240-$480; evaporator fan motor $320-$580; thermostat or electronic controller $220-$440; condenser coil deep cleaning $200-$360; TXV replacement $400-$780; refrigerant recharge $380-$820; compressor replacement $1,600-$3,400 on standard reach-ins (higher on larger MT or custom condensing packages). Full cost ranges by repair type are in our commercial refrigerator repair pricing guide. We quote the full job before starting, separate labor / parts / refrigerant as three line items, and apply the $120 diagnostic credit to the repair total.
