About this service

A Pro Grand is a twelve-thousand-dollar piece of engineering. We respect that.

A Thermador Pro Grand 48" dual-fuel range lives in a lot of kitchens we've been inside across Southern California, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and Calabasas on LA's Westside; Newport Beach, Newport Coast, and Irvine in Orange County; Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and Hidden Hills in Ventura; the La Cañada and Pasadena foothills in the SGV; and Rancho Cucamonga and Temecula estate kitchens in the Inland Empire. These ranges cost between $11,000 and $14,500 installed. The standard response from Thermador corporate is a 5-day dispatch window through a Factory-Certified contractor. Most of our Pro Grand calls are people who can't wait five days for a working stove, a dinner party Saturday, kids at home, a kitchen that's the heart of a house.

We run a different model. Factory-trained on the BSH platforms (Thermador, Bosch, and Gaggenau share the same parent and the same service architecture), parts for Pro Grand on the truck, average arrival inside four hours of the call. If we can't fix it the first trip, usually a deep control board or compressor-adjacent issue, we tell you that on the phone, not after the diagnostic.

Models and platforms

What we service

Every residential Thermador range platform built since roughly 2005. The current lineup runs on three generations of control architecture, pre-2010, 2010–2018, and 2018+ with the Home Connect / sensor stack, and we carry parts for all three.

Pro Grand 48" Dual-Fuel

PRD486GDHU · PRD486GLGU · PRD48JDSGU · PRD484NCGU · PRD486JDGU

Six pedestal Star Burners, ExtraLow simmer on four positions, convection oven, warming drawer, gas rangetop with electric oven. The Steam variants (JDSGU) add a dedicated steam generator.

Pro Grand 48" All-Gas

PRG486GDH · PRG486EDG · PRG486WDG · PRG486WLG

Same rangetop as the dual-fuel, gas oven and gas secondary oven. Often specified by clients with a gas line to the range but no 240V circuit.

Pro Grand 36" Dual-Fuel and Gas

PRD366WHU · PRD366GHU · PRG366WG · PRG364WLG

The 36" footprint fits tighter kitchen layouts across our service area, Westwood and Marina del Rey condos, Newport Beach high-rises, second homes in Palm Springs and Lake Arrowhead, and remodels where a 48" won't work. Same Star Burner and ExtraLow technology.

Pro Harmony 30"

PRD304EHC · PRD304GHC · PRG304WH

The compact Pro platform. Shared service parts with Pro Grand for ignition and control, smaller cavity and simpler oven architecture.

Legacy Pro lines, PD series, older CIT rangetops paired with wall ovens, we service when parts are still available from BSH. Discontinued 1990s outdoor and wall-heater products are not in scope (see the Thermador hub page).

Diagnostics and common failures

The eight things that break on a Thermador range

Eighty percent of the service calls we make on Pro Grand ranges are variations on this list. We carry parts for all eight on the truck.

1. Star Burner won't light, clicks, no flame

The ignition module sends spark to the electrode but the burner stays cold. Two causes, in order of frequency: clogged gas port on the burner head (grease, spilled food, spider web in the feed hole), or a failed hot surface igniter on the affected burner. Clean-out and igniter swap both close the same visit. Parts range: $195–$285 for the igniter, labor typically 45 minutes.

2. Orange flame, flare-up, or yellow tips

Incomplete combustion. The small gas port inside the burner is partially blocked, or the air shutter is out of spec, or the regulator is reading the wrong inlet pressure. A Pro Grand running at 14" WC when the manifold wants 10" WC will throw orange flame on the inboard burners first. Diagnostic includes manometer check at the inlet. If the regulator itself is off, we swap it, $240 part, 30 minute job.

3. ExtraLow simmer won't hold 750 BTU

ExtraLow runs on a dedicated XLO solenoid valve and a simmer control board, not the main ignition board. When the simmer drifts up (you set it to low and the pan still boils hard) or won't come on at all, the XLO solenoid is the usual culprit. If the whole ExtraLow system is dead on multiple burners, it's the simmer control board. Both are standard stocked parts for us.

4. Oven thermostat reads 15–25 °F off

Pro Grand ovens drift over time, a temperature sensor that's been cycling between 100°F and 500°F for eight years starts reading low. You'll notice it first on baking: cakes underdone, bread too pale. We verify with a calibrated thermocouple at the rack surface, and if drift exceeds 10°F we replace the temperature sensor. Part is $165, sensor calibration is a 40-minute job. Some owners ask us to "bake it hotter", we don't do that, the control board fights the offset and things get worse.

5. Oven door won't close, latch won't engage, self-clean won't start

Door latch mechanism. The latch on a Pro Grand is mechanical-electrical, a motor-driven lock that engages before self-clean, and a plunger switch that tells the board the door is closed. Both fail on a common wear curve around year 8–10. Replacement latch assembly runs $210–$310. If the self-clean cycle started and the door locked mid-cycle and won't open, that's the oven lock motor and it's a same-day repair.

6. Convection fan noise, grinding, buzzing, whine

Convection fan motors run for thousands of hours at oven temperature. Bearings dry out, the fan wobbles, and you hear it on every bake cycle. We replace the convection motor with an OEM part ($340–$460 depending on platform) and clean the fan blade. If the grinding has been going on for months, the motor mount and the fan hub are also likely worn, we inspect both on every convection job.

7. ERROR COMM, F1, E15, or other error codes

Pro Grand error codes are usually communication or sensor-related. ERROR COMM is the main control talking to the broiler or simmer board and getting no reply, loose harness or a failed secondary board. F1 is a stuck touchpad. E15 is a moisture or short condition at the control. We carry the service documentation for every error code across all three control generations. Diagnostic pulls the code, isolates to the board, and we quote the fix before ordering parts.

8. Pro Steam water reservoir and descale cycle

The PRD48JDSGU Steam models add a whole parallel water system, reservoir, pump, steam generator, descale sensor. Failures: "refill water" message stuck even with a full tank (sensor contact), descaling cycle won't complete (valve or sensor), steam oven runs cold (generator heating element). Most of these are cleaning and sensor jobs, not parts. The rare parts job, steam generator element, is a 3-hour repair and we quote it before starting.

Pricing

Pricing reflects parts and labor for a standard service call inside our regular LA/OC/Ventura coverage area. High-rise access, scheduling outside business hours, or truly obscure legacy parts can push the range, we flag it on the phone before the visit.

Warranty honest talk

If your range is under warranty, call Thermador first

Thermador's standard warranty is 2 years on major components, 1 year on everything else. Inside that window, Thermador dispatches a Factory-Certified contractor at no parts cost to you. The numbers to call are Thermador customer service at 1-800-735-4328, they handle scheduling.

Where we come in: after the warranty expires, or when Thermador's 5-day dispatch window doesn't fit your schedule, or when the warranty work has been done twice already and the problem is back. We're factory-trained but independent, lower labor rates, faster response, same parts.

We also handle the out-of-warranty diagnostic work for customers who want a second opinion before making a repair-or-replace decision on a ten-year-old Pro Grand. A $89 diagnostic visit is a lot cheaper than a $2,400 "maybe the board" repair that doesn't fix the real problem.

FAQ

Thermador range repair, common questions

What's the ERROR COMM code on my Thermador Pro Grand?

ERROR COMM means the main control board and the broiler module aren't talking to each other. Most often it's triggered by a power event, surge, brownout, breaker trip. A full breaker-off-60-seconds power cycle clears it temporarily. If it comes back, we inspect the broiler harness for chafing at the chassis grommet, and if needed replace the broiler module board. Common repair, we stock the parts.

Why is my Star Burner flame orange?

Incomplete combustion. The small gas port in the burner head is partially blocked, usually grease or cleaning product residue in the igniter channel. The fuel-air mix goes rich, you get orange flame and sooting. We remove the burner cap and spider, clear the port with a 0.6mm needle, verify the air shutter setting, and re-seat the flame spreader. If orange persists after a full cleanup, the orifice or the regulator pressure is off, also quick fixes.

Can you fix the ExtraLow simmer?

Yes. ExtraLow runs on a dedicated XLO solenoid valve and a simmer control board, independent of the main burner valves. When the simmer drifts up or won't hold 750 BTU, it's usually the XLO solenoid (sticking partially closed) or the simmer board (calibration drift). Both are stocked parts, 45-minute job in most cases.

How much does a typical Thermador range repair cost?

Diagnostic is $89, waived with repair. Common jobs fall in these ranges: ignition module $320–$450, hot surface igniter $195–$285, main oven control board $520–$780, simmer control board $340–$490, door latch $210–$310. Labor and parts quoted before work starts. See the pricing table on this page for the full list.

Do you service the Pro Grand Steam 48?

Yes. The Pro Grand Steam 48 (PRD48JDSGU series) has its own water reservoir, pump, steam generator, and descaling sensor stack. Most Steam failures are sensor or descaling-residue issues, cleared in one visit. Steam generator element replacement is a 3–4 hour job and we quote it separately before starting.

I spilled water into the control area of my PRD486, now what?

Turn off the gas at the shutoff and power at the breaker immediately. Don't run the range until we've pulled the top and dried the electronics. Depending on what shorted, common damage is ignitor board ($285), oven lock motor ($225), simmer board ($420), sometimes all three. Moisture damage is covered under most homeowner insurance if the spill was accidental.

How fast can you come out?

Same-day on calls before 1 PM weekday inside regular coverage. Malibu, Hidden Hills, and Pacific Palisades usually get next-morning priority. For a dead Pro Grand with a dinner party tonight, call and say so, we rearrange routing for emergencies.

Are you Thermador Factory-Certified?

No, we're factory-trained but independent. If your range is inside the 2-year major-parts warranty, call Thermador at 1-800-735-4328 first, they'll dispatch a Factory-Certified contractor at no parts cost. After the warranty window, we're usually the better call: faster, lower labor rate, same technical grade. Same BSH platform training.

Ready to schedule Thermador range service?

Same day available. $89 diagnostic, waived with repair. Labor and parts quoted before we start.
