Leak diagnostic
Where the leak is determines whether it's a $145 fix or a new disposal.
A leaking disposal has three possible leak points, and the location tells us almost everything. Top-side leaks (where the disposal meets the bottom of the sink) are mounting flange or putty seal failures: serviceable, $145 to $245 typical. Side leaks (at the dishwasher inlet hose, the side drain discharge, or the slip-joint connection to the P-trap) are gasket or clamp issues: cheapest tier, $125 to $185. Bottom leaks (water dripping from the underside of the disposal housing itself) are hairline cracks in the housing: not serviceable, replacement only.
Our techs service residential disposals across LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside. We dry the disposal completely with paper towels, run water and the disposal briefly, and watch for the leak's origin. Most leak diagnostics take 10 to 15 minutes once the unit is dry. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573 + EPA 608 Universal #1346255700410.
Disposal leaks are urgent in our experience. The slow drip under the sink rots cabinet bases, damages adjacent storage, and in LA condos triggers HOA water damage claims. We dispatch same-day for leak calls more often than for any other disposal symptom because the damage compounds with every load of dishes.
Three leak points
Top, side, bottom, different repair tiers.
Top: sink mounting flange (most common, year 5 to 10)
The disposal attaches to the bottom of the sink drain via a three-piece mount: a top flange that sits in the drain hole, a backup ring underneath, and a snap ring that holds it all in place. Between the top flange and the sink, there's either plumber's putty (older units) or a pre-applied rubber gasket (newer InSinkErator and Waste King units). Both fail with age. Putty dries and cracks; rubber compresses and loses sealing pressure. The leak presents as water pooling on top of the disposal that drips down the cabinet wall.
Repair: pull the disposal off the sink mount, scrape off the old putty or remove the failed gasket, clean both surfaces, re-seal, re-mount. About 60 to 90 minutes labor. Parts cost is small ($15 to $35); labor is the bulk. $145 to $245 typical.
Side: discharge / dishwasher inlet / drain connection
Three sub-locations:
- Side discharge tube (where the disposal connects to the P-trap), slip-joint nut loosens or the rubber gasket inside compresses. Re-tighten or replace the gasket. $125 to $185.
- Dishwasher inlet (the smaller side port where dishwasher drain connects), clamp loosens or the rubber hose hardens with age. Replace clamp and inspect hose. $125 to $185.
- Drain pipe slip joint at P-trap, not the disposal itself, but the plumbing immediately below it. Re-seat the slip joint, replace washers. Often included in a disposal leak service call when we find it.
Bottom: housing crack (year 7+ typical, replacement only)
Water dripping from the underside of the disposal body itself. Almost always a hairline crack in the housing from thermal stress fatigue or impact damage (something heavy dropped into the sink and hit the disposal). The crack can be temporarily epoxy-sealed but it always grows back. Permanent fix is replacement, $345 to $785 depending on tier. We don't recommend epoxy-seal as a long-term solution and we'll tell you that on-site.

FAQ
Disposal leak questions.
My disposal is leaking. How do I know where the leak is coming from?
The leak point determines the repair. Three possibilities: (1) Top of the disposal where it meets the sink, failed mounting flange or putty seal. Water pools under the sink and drips down the side of the disposal cabinet. (2) Bottom of the disposal, housing crack, the most expensive scenario, almost always means full replacement. (3) Side of the disposal at the dishwasher inlet, side discharge, or drain pipe connection, gasket or clamp issue, usually the cheapest fix. We dry the disposal completely and run water to identify the leak point at the diagnostic visit.
Why does the bottom of my disposal leak? Can it be sealed?
A bottom-housing leak means a hairline crack has developed in the disposal's outer shell. The crack is usually thermal stress fatigue (year 7+ on mid-tier units) or impact damage (something heavy fell into the sink). The crack can sometimes be epoxy-sealed as a temporary fix, but the disposal will leak again within months because the crack widens with each thermal cycle. Permanent fix is full disposal replacement. If a tech tells you they can permanently seal a cracked housing for $200, get a second opinion.
What's the most common leak point?
By a wide margin, the top mounting flange where the disposal attaches to the sink drain. The flange uses plumber's putty (older units) or a rubber gasket (newer units) to seal against the sink. Both fail at year 5 to 10 typical: putty dries out and cracks, rubber gaskets compress and lose sealing pressure. Symptom is a slow drip under the sink that gets worse over weeks. Repair is $145 to $245, pull the disposal, clean the flange, re-seal with new putty or gasket, re-mount.
Should I just replace the disposal if it's leaking?
Depends where it's leaking from. Top flange or side connection: repair, $145 to $285, makes sense at any age. Bottom housing crack: replace, $345 to $785 installed, no repair option. Internal seal between motor and grinding chamber: 50/50, on units under 5 years old we'll repair if parts are available; on units 8+ the labor approaches replacement cost so we recommend new disposal.
How urgent is a small disposal leak?
More urgent than most people think. A slow drip under the sink rots the cabinet base over months, damages adjacent storage, and in LA condos can cause water damage claims with the HOA. Mold builds up in the dark cabinet space. We treat disposal leaks as priority same-day calls because the damage compounds.
What's the cost?
Top flange re-seal: $145 to $245. Side discharge or dishwasher inlet gasket: $125 to $185. Drain pipe connection (slip joint, P-trap): $125 to $185. Full disposal replacement (mid-tier): $345 to $525. Full disposal replacement (premium with sound jacket): $525 to $785. The $89 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair.
What's your warranty?
90 days SDAR labor and parts on every repair. New disposal installations carry the manufacturer warranty (4 to 10 years on InSinkErator Evolution, 8 years on Waste King Legend) plus our 90-day labor. BHGS #A49573, EPA 608 Universal #1346255700410.
