First: OF OF isn't a breakdown — it's demo mode.
The single most-panicked "code" on a Samsung fridge is OF OF (also shown as O FF or scrolling bars), and it isn't a fault at all. It's Cooling Off / Demo mode — the showroom setting that lights the panel but doesn't cool. People switch it on by accident and think the fridge failed. Exit it by holding the right button combination for about 8 seconds until you hear a chime (the buttons vary by model). The real fault codes are usually a number plus E or C: 22E/21E (fans), 5E (defrost sensor), the 39E/26E ice-maker family, 88 88 (display glitch), and PC ER (communication). 22E / 22C — refrigerator fan
The fridge evaporator fan isn't reporting rotation, usually because frost has locked the blade or the motor failed. Power off and manual-defrost for about 24 hours, check the vents, and restart. Returns = tech.
21E — freezer fan
The same fault on the freezer evaporator fan. Frost buildup or a failed motor. Same homeowner defrost attempt; a persistent 21E is a tech job.
5E — defrost sensor
The fridge defrost sensor (thermistor) has failed or disconnected. This is a failed-part code — a power cycle rarely clears it, so it needs a tech to replace the sensor.
03 · Ice-maker codes
Samsung's most common code cluster.
39E / 39C — ice maker not completing its cycle
The ice maker fails to finish a harvest, usually because it's frozen or jammed. A forced defrost is the first thing to try.
26E — ice-maker function error · 40E / 40C — ice-room fan
26E means the ice maker isn't making ice (check it's on, cold enough, and not frosted over); 40E is the ice-room fan, which is a tech replacement.
8E, 14E — ice-maker sensors
Sensor faults in the ice-making system. These point to a specific failed part and are tech-level replacements.

04 · Communication, power, and water codes
The rest of the common ones.
88 88 — display / communication glitch
Usually caused by a power interruption during start-up. Unplug for a full minute and restore power; it often self-clears. Persistent = wiring or board.
PC ER — communication error
The fridge components have lost communication, commonly from a loose wiring harness under the left door hinge on French-door models. A power cycle may help; the root cause usually needs a tech to reseat or replace the harness.
84C — compressor · 85C — low voltage
84C is a compressor lock (the compressor won't start) — a sealed-system tech diagnosis. 85C is a low-voltage warning: check the fridge is on a dedicated outlet, not an extension cord or shared surge strip, before it's called a fault.
76C — Autofill water detected
Water was detected in the Autofill pitcher compartment, usually a spill or overflow. Dry the compartment. If it recurs, the Autofill valve needs a tech.
A note on 41E / 42E: some sources label these as generic communication errors, but on Family Hub models Samsung describes them as a screen/software issue instead — the meaning is genuinely inconsistent across sources, so we won't pin a single definition on them. If you're seeing 41E or 42E, it's worth a diagnostic rather than a guess.
05 · What to try, and when to call
The safe steps first.
- Rule out demo mode. If you see OF OF and the panel's lit but not cooling, hold the model's button combo ~8 seconds to exit.
- Power cycle. Unplug for a full minute for 88 88 and transient glitches, then restore power.
- Manual defrost for fan/ice codes. For 22E, 21E, 39E, or 26E, power off and let it defrost ~24 hours, then restart.
- Check the outlet for 85C. Confirm a dedicated outlet, not an extension cord or shared strip.
- Note whether the code returns. Cleared and gone = a glitch. Comes back = a failed part.
Where to stop: exiting demo mode, power cycling, defrosting, drying the Autofill tray, and checking the outlet are all safe. Do not open the sealed system (84C / compressor), replace sensors or fans, or disassemble the wiring harness yourself. Sensor, compressor, and persistent codes are tech work.
