Beverage-Air service

Beverage-Air: industry workhorse of mid-premium commercial refrigeration.

Beverage-Air is the workhorse of mid-premium commercial refrigeration. Manufactured in Winston-Salem, North Carolina since 1944, with a long American manufacturing history that predates the Ali Group era. Now part of Ali Group, the Italian privately-held holding company that owns roughly 25 commercial foodservice brands. The Ali Group portfolio includes Scotsman ice machines, Ice-O-Matic, Champion dishwashers, and Carpigiani gelato equipment, plus Beverage-Air refrigeration.

You see Beverage-Air everywhere in LA. Chain restaurants standardize on it: Chipotle, Panera, Subway corporate accounts spec Beverage-Air across their store buildouts. Mid-tier restaurants and cafés use HR-Series reach-ins and SP-Series sandwich prep tables as their default. Convenience stores and gas stations use MR and MMR glass-door merchandisers for beverage retail. Bars use UCR and LV undercounter for back-bar storage. Hotels and chain hospitality use the full lineup.

Our techs service Beverage-Air across LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. HR-Series reach-in coolers (HR1, HR2, HR3 by door count). HF-Series reach-in freezers. SP-Series sandwich prep tables and DP-Series pizza prep. UCR/UCF undercounter. MR/MMR glass-door merchandisers. LV/LVUC low-profile bar undercounter. TF/TFP back-bar coolers. WTR refrigerated worktables. HRPF pass-through reach-ins.

EPA 608 Universal plus R-290 certification for the post-2018 Beverage-Air transition to propane refrigerant on many models. BHGS #A49573. BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7. Parent context: commercial refrigeration repair.

Lineup and what fails

Beverage-Air series and common service items.

Beverage-Air uses two-letter series codes by equipment category. We identify by serial number first, not just model badge.

HR-Series Reach-In Coolers (HR1, HR2, HR3)

HR1 single-door, HR2 double-door (the most popular Beverage-Air reach-in by a wide margin), HR3 triple-door. Common in chain restaurants and mid-tier kitchens. Failure pattern in chronological order:

  • Year 4 to 7: Condenser fan motor seizure. Faster on coastal installs in Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Newport Beach where salt accelerates bearing wear. $280 to $500.
  • Year 5 to 7: Evaporator fan motor failure. Cabinet airflow stops, food warms while sensor still reads cold.
  • Year 6 to 9: Defrost timer (Paragon-style on legacy units, defrost board on modern). $200 to $340.
  • Year 3 to 5: Door gasket compression at hinge side. Beverage-Air gaskets are model-specific dimensions. $200 to $360 per door.
  • Year 8 to 12: Compressor capacitor and start relay failure. Replace as a pair.
  • Year 10 to 13: Compressor mechanical wear. This is the replace-vs-repair decision threshold on this tier.

HF-Series Reach-In Freezers (HF1, HF2, HF3)

Electric defrost architecture (similar to True T-49F or Turbo Air M3F, not hot-gas like Hoshizaki). Defrost heater element burnout at year 5 to 8 is the common HF-specific service item. Frost builds up, blocks airflow, freezer warms, customer calls. 2 to 3 hour repair to access the evaporator and replace the calrod element.

SP-Series Sandwich Prep Tables

SP-Series sized by inches and door configuration (SP60HC is the 60-inch, the most common SP variant we see). Cold rail running warm is the number one SP failure. Deep evaporator clean resolves roughly 80% of those calls without parts. Lettuce, tomato, sauce, and cheese debris pack the evaporator coil over 12 to 18 months of heavy use, airflow drops, pan rail temperature climbs.

DP-Series Pizza Prep (DP67, DP93)

Pizza-specific prep with shorter cold rail and deeper storage drawers. DP67 is 67-inch, DP93 is 93-inch. Same diagnostic patterns as SP plus drawer slide service on drawer variants. Slides corrode in coastal and humid environments.

UCR / UCF Undercounter (UCR27, UCR48)

UCR27 single-door 27-inch, UCR48 48-inch (single section, two-drawer or two-door). UCF freezer variants. Common in food trucks, small kitchens, mid-tier restaurants. Coastal salt and tight installation airflow are the limiting factors.

MR / MMR / MMF Glass-Door Merchandisers

MR23 (23-inch single-door), MR45 (45-inch double-door), MMR45 and larger MMR variants. Display refrigeration with glass doors. Anti-condensation heater wire failures at year 5 to 8 are the common merchandiser service item. MMF freezer variants for ice cream display and frozen food retail.

LV / LVUC Low-Profile and TF/TFP Back-Bar

LV24 and LVUC variants are compact bar back-bar configurations. TF/TFP series are bar-side bottle coolers and beer dispensers (TF52 is the 52-inch three-door back-bar). Bar splash damage cleanup is a typical service item on these. Sticky drink residue gets into electrical components and corrodes connectors over time.

WTR Refrigerated Worktables and HRPF Pass-Through

WTR drawer-style worktable refrigeration for pizza prep stations and sushi prep. HRPF and HRP pass-through reach-ins for hospitality and institutional kitchens (door on each side, used between line and prep). EBR emergency bottle refrigerators for specialty applications.

Common scenarios

Top Beverage-Air repairs in our 5-county territory.

In rough order of frequency on Beverage-Air service calls:

  1. Condenser fan motor replacement. The most common Beverage-Air repair across all series. Beverage-Air OEM via Ali Group North American distribution.
  2. Cold rail evaporator deep clean (SP/DP prep tables). The most common prep table issue across all brands, not just Beverage-Air. Often no parts needed once the coil is clean.
  3. Door gasket replacement. Beverage-Air specific gasket dimensions. Model-specific. We carry common HR-Series and SP-Series profiles on the van.
  4. Defrost heater element (HF freezer variants). Electric defrost calrod element. 2 to 3 hour repair to access the evaporator.
  5. Defrost timer replacement. Paragon-style on legacy units, defrost control board on modern. Common van-stocked timers.
  6. Evaporator fan motor. Smaller cabinet motor. Cabinet airflow loss.
  7. Compressor capacitor and start relay. Pair replacement on aged compressors.
  8. Glass-door anti-condensation heater (MR/MMR merchandisers). Heater wire in glass frame replacement. Year 5 to 8 typical.
  9. Refrigerant leak repair plus recharge. EPA 608 leak detection, brazed repair, evacuate, recharge. R-290 systems require R-290 certification.
  10. Bar splash component cleanup (TF/TFP, LV). Sticky drink residue in electrical harness. Cleanup, sometimes connector replacement.

Real repairs

Composite stories from the route.

Five Beverage-Air jobs from the past 90 days. Models, symptoms, diagnosis, parts, time, total. Names omitted; the technical scenarios are typical of what we see weekly.

We service:

  • Full HR-Series reach-in coolers (HR1, HR2, HR2-1S, HR3 plus all variants)
  • HF-Series reach-in freezers (HF1, HF2, HF3)
  • SP-Series and DP-Series prep tables (sandwich and pizza configurations)
  • MTP and SPED alternate prep configurations
  • UCR / UCF undercounter (refrigerator and freezer, all sizes including UCR27 and UCR48)
  • MR / MMR / MMF glass-door merchandisers (MR23, MR45, MMR45 and larger)
  • LV / LVUC low-profile bar undercounter
  • TF / TFP back-bar coolers
  • WTR refrigerated worktables
  • HRPF / HRP pass-through reach-ins
  • EBR emergency bottle refrigerators
  • All EPA-permitted refrigerants Beverage-Air uses: R-22 legacy, R-134a, R-404A, R-290 propane (we have R-290 certification), select R-410A on newer specialty models
  • Ali Group warranty processing where applicable

We don't do: new Beverage-Air installation (specialty installer trade through Ali Group authorized dealers); sister Ali Group brand equipment outside refrigeration (Scotsman ice machines, Ice-O-Matic, Champion dishwashers, Carpigiani gelato are separate trade categories with their own service paths); chain corporate facility service contract management (we work as approved local contractor with chain regional managers, but we don't manage the corporate contracts themselves).

For warranty-eligible repairs, we document the failure on-site, the operator processes the claim through Ali Group North American distribution (4 to 7 day standard part ship), and we install the replacement.

Pricing

Honest opinion on this tier: a 13-year-old HR-Series with major compressor failure usually doesn't pencil out to repair. New HR2-1S landed runs roughly $4,500 to $5,500 commercial wholesale. A $2,200 compressor swap on a unit with a worn condenser, aged door gasket, and defrost timer drift you'll be replacing in 18 months anyway is throwing good money after bad. We tell operators that on the diagnostic call.

Why us for Beverage-Air

What separates our Beverage-Air service from general commercial refrigeration repair.

  • Mid-premium tier expertise. We calibrate service approach to the expected 10 to 13 year life on HR/HF Series, not the 15 to 20 year premium-tier expectation. Different replace-vs-repair math.
  • Chain restaurant experience. Chipotle, Panera, Subway, and similar chain corporate accounts standardize on Beverage-Air. Our techs work with chain regional facility managers and provide standard service ticket documentation that chain ops requires.
  • EPA 608 Universal plus R-290 certification. Required for post-2018 Beverage-Air models on propane refrigerant. See our EPA 608 page.
  • Ali Group parts network access. 4 to 7 day standard ship through Ali Group North American distribution. Common parts (HR/HF/SP/UCR motors, gaskets, timers) on the van for first-visit repair.
  • Convenience store and beverage retail experience. MR/MMR merchandisers in gas stations and convenience stores are a separate audience from restaurant work. Different failure patterns, different service approach.
  • Coastal salt expertise. Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Newport Beach Beverage-Air installs see condenser fan motors and gaskets fail at the lower end of the year ranges. We stock parts accordingly.
  • 24/7 phone answering, no emergency surcharge. $120 anytime.
  • BHGS #A49573 plus BBB A+. Verifiable.
  • Same-day across LA, Orange County, Ventura. Next-day for Rancho Cucamonga and Temecula.
  • Honest replace-vs-repair. A 13-year-old HR-Series with a failed compressor on this tier may not be worth fixing. We say so on the diagnostic.

Sister sub-services: reach-in cooler repair, prep table repair, undercounter refrigerator repair. Sibling brand: True Manufacturing repair.

FAQ

Beverage-Air repair questions.

Is Beverage-Air the same as Scotsman or Ice-O-Matic?

All three are part of Ali Group, the Italian privately-held foodservice holding company. Beverage-Air makes refrigeration. Scotsman and Ice-O-Matic make ice machines. Sister brands, shared corporate parent, separate manufacturing. We service Beverage-Air refrigeration on this page. Ice machines are a separate equipment category.

Do you service Beverage-Air HR2, SP, UCR, and MR merchandisers?

Yes. These four product families cover roughly 80% of our Beverage-Air service calls. Common parts on the van: condenser fan motors for HR-Series, defrost timers, door gaskets in HR-Series and SP-Series dimensions, anti-condensation heater wire for MR/MMR glass-door merchandisers.

How long do Beverage-Air units last?

HR/HF mid-premium reach-ins: 10 to 13 years inland, 8 to 11 coastal. SP/DP prep tables: 8 to 12 years (heavy use accelerates cold rail evaporator fouling). UCR/UCF undercounter: 8 to 10 years inland, 6 to 9 coastal. MR/MMR merchandisers: 8 to 12 years (anti-condensation heater is the limiting factor). This is mid-premium tier life expectancy, between True/Traulsen at the top and Turbo Air at the entry-tier.

My chain restaurant has Beverage-Air. Do you work with corporate facility managers?

Yes. We work as approved local service contractor for several chain corporate accounts. Chain regional facility managers can dispatch us through their preferred vendor systems. We provide the standard service ticket documentation chain ops requires.

My Beverage-Air uses R-290. What does that mean for service?

R-290 is propane, the hydrocarbon refrigerant Beverage-Air transitioned to post-2018 on many models for environmental compliance. Different service procedures than R-134a or R-404A: smaller charges, specific leak detection, separate recovery procedure. Requires R-290 certification beyond standard EPA 608 Universal (#1346255700410). We have it.

My MMR merchandiser glass keeps fogging. Is that the heater or the seals?

Almost always the anti-condensation heater wire in the glass door frame open-circuited. Common at year 5 to 8 on MR/MMR. Replacement requires partial frame disassembly. $340 to $580 typical. If gaskets test fine and the heater wire reads open with a multimeter, that's your part.

What's your warranty?

90 days SDAR labor warranty on every repair. Beverage-Air component warranties (where applicable through Ali Group North American distribution) are processed separately. BHGS #A49573, EPA 608 Universal plus R-290 certified, BBB A+ accredited.
