About this service

Thermador and Bosch share the same DNA. For service, that's a feature.

Thermador dishwashers are built by BSH Home Appliances, the same parent company that owns Bosch and Gaggenau. For many years the dishwashers were produced in BSH's European factories alongside Bosch Benchmark, and the current Radiance Collection is built in BSH's New Bern, North Carolina plant on the same chassis with Thermador-specific tooling. What makes a Thermador a Thermador is the Star Speed hot-water heater, the Zeolite-based StarDry system, the 42 dBA sound insulation, and the Thermador-branded electronics. What's inside the base is largely shared with Bosch Benchmark.

For service this is excellent news. Wash pump motors, drain pumps, water inlet valves, heating elements, and door latches cross-reference between Thermador and Bosch. Parts availability is better than any other luxury dishwasher brand, most failures we see close same-visit with stocked parts. We work on both platforms every week and the fit is identical.

The four series

Radiance Collection, which model is yours?

The current Thermador dishwasher lineup is the Radiance Collection: four series named after gems, ranging from entry to flagship. We service all four, plus legacy pre-Radiance Thermador dishwashers still common across Westside LA, Newport Beach, Irvine, Thousand Oaks, and Temecula kitchens.

Star-Sapphire® (Flagship)

DWHD870WFP · DWHD870WFM

Top of the line. 20-minute Star Speed hot-water cycle, the fastest non-commercial wash on the market. StarDry with Zeolite. Multi-Color Star Glow lighting. Chef's Tool Drawer third rack. 42 dBA. Full-color touch control. Up to 18 wine glass capacity.

Sapphire®

DWHD770WFM · DWHD770WFP · DWHD770CFM

Sapphire Glow blue interior lighting, StarDry Zeolite drying, Zone Control Spray Arm, Chef's Tool Drawer. 42 dBA. Same platform as Star-Sapphire minus the Star Speed 20-minute cycle. Home Connect WiFi.

Topaz®

DWHD760CFP · DWHD760CFM · DWHD760CPR

Mid-tier. 44 dBA, Crystal Protect water softener (genuinely useful given Southern California's 200-450 ppm tap water, particularly in Inland Empire districts), PowerBeam floor light, foldable tines. Home Connect. Masterpiece or Professional handle options.

Emerald®

DWHD650WFP · DWHD650WFM · DWHD650WPR

Entry into the Radiance Collection. 48 dBA, 6 wash cycles, Sens-A-Wash soil sensor, PowerBoost. No Crystal Protect water softener. No Home Connect. The sweet spot for second kitchens and rental-property Thermador installs.

Pre-Radiance Thermador dishwashers (older DWHD models from 2010–2016) are still common across Southern California kitchens and we service them. BSH still stocks most parts. Very early Thermador dishwashers from the 1990s (pre-BSH acquisition) are rarely serviceable because the parts inventory is effectively closed.

Common failures

What breaks on a Thermador dishwasher

1. Won't drain, water sitting in the bottom

Start with the filter assembly. 80% of "won't drain" calls resolve with filter cleaning and no parts needed. Food debris, label glue, broken glass, pit stones, and random kitchen debris collect in the sump filter and restrict the drain pump's intake. Pull the filter basket, flush it under hot water, inspect the sump for larger debris, reassemble. If the filter was clear, check the drain hose for kinks (especially where it loops under the countertop) and the air gap or disposal connection. Failed drain pump motor is the third-tier cause, $245–$325 part, 45-minute swap.

2. Dishes not clean, films, spots, residue

Same filter-first approach. Restricted water flow to the spray arms cuts wash pressure and dishes come out gritty. Next: spray arm nozzles clogged by LA hard-water mineral buildup, remove the arms, soak in vinegar for 30 minutes, run a cleaning cycle. Third: heating element failure, if the wash water isn't reaching 140°F, detergent doesn't dissolve and glassware comes out filmed. Heating element swap is $220–$310, typical 45-minute job. Fourth: rinse aid dispenser empty or clogged (solution: refill and verify flow).

3. Error E15, water in base pan, flood protection trip

Thermador dishwashers have a water sensor in the base pan that trips the cycle if it detects a leak. Common leak sources: water inlet valve gasket failing (top left, behind the kick plate), sump gasket aged out, door seal degraded, or a cracked wash pump housing. Diagnostic: tilt the unit back to drain the pan, inspect each potential leak point, repair the source. Resetting E15 without finding the leak source just triggers it again next cycle. We source-trace every E15 call.

4. Door latch won't close or won't release

Thermador door latches have a mechanical hook that engages a strike plate plus an electrical switch that tells the control the door is closed. Failure modes: latch spring fatigued and not snapping shut (common around year 8), strike plate misaligned because the door hinges have drifted, or the electrical switch has failed and the control thinks the door is open even when it's latched. Latch assembly replacement $215–$295, 40-minute job. We check hinge alignment at the same time, a misaligned door will cause repeat latch failure.

5. Door springs broken, door falls open heavily

The door on a Thermador dishwasher is counterbalanced by two springs connected to cables running through pulleys inside the side panels. When a spring fails, the door becomes heavy and slams open instead of easing down. Replacement is both springs at once plus the cables, they wear together. $145–$210 parts, 60-minute job. We don't service one spring and leave the other, it's a return-visit risk.

6. Not starting, touch panel lights up, no wash

Control board or touch panel communication issue. The display works but the main board isn't responding to Start. We test the ribbon cable between the touch panel and the main control, 30% of cases are a loose ribbon connector, no parts needed. If the ribbon is seated, the touch panel itself may have failed ($380–$540), or the main control board ($485–$680). Diagnostic isolates which. We don't swap both on spec.

7. StarDry / Zeolite not drying (Sapphire, Star-Sapphire)

The Zeolite cartridge at the back of the tub absorbs moisture and releases heat, that's how the Zeolite-equipped Thermador dishwashers dry without a heating element during drying. When drying performance drops, the Zeolite is either saturated (should regenerate on each cycle but degrades over years) or the circulation ducting has lint blockage. Zeolite cartridge replacement is $285–$380 for high-mileage units, usually around year 6–8. Cleaning the ducting is a service call, no parts.

8. Rack wheels broken, rack drags or falls off tracks

Small part, big annoyance. The plastic rack wheels fatigue and either crack off or lose their mounting pin. Replacement wheel set (all four corners at once) is $85–$125. 20-minute job. We replace all four even if only one is broken, they're the same age, the other three are next.

Southern California context

Southern California tap water and Thermador dishwashers

SoCal tap water is hard across all five counties we serve, typically 100–200 ppm calcium and magnesium carbonate in LA Westside districts, 200–300 ppm across most of Orange County (Newport Beach, Irvine, Anaheim Hills), and 300–450+ ppm in the Inland Empire (Rancho Cucamonga, Temecula, Riverside) where Colorado River and groundwater blends drive hardness substantially higher. This matters for dishwashers because mineral scale builds up on the heating element, inside the spray arm nozzles, on the tub walls, and inside the Zeolite cartridge on StarDry-equipped units. Unaddressed, scale cuts wash performance in about three years and shortens heating element life by 30–40%, and earlier still for Inland Empire installs.

The Topaz, Sapphire, and Star-Sapphire series include Crystal Protect, a built-in softener that takes regenerating salt. If you have a Topaz/Sapphire/Star-Sapphire and you're not using the salt dispenser, you're missing half the benefit (and most of the benefit if you live in the IE). On Emerald (no Crystal Protect) we recommend periodic cleaning cycles with a commercial descaler like Affresh, every 90 days, every 60 days in Rancho Cucamonga and Temecula. We'll demonstrate the salt refill on Sapphire-class units at the first service call if you haven't been using it.

Warranty context

Thermador dishwasher warranty, and post-warranty reality

Thermador dishwasher warranty is 2 years on major parts, 1 year on everything else. During the warranty window, call Thermador at 1-800-735-4328 for Factory-Certified dispatch at no parts cost.

Most of our Thermador dishwasher calls are 5-to-10-year-old units well outside the warranty window. The BSH chassis is durable, wash pumps typically run 10–15 years before replacement, heating elements 8–12, control boards highly variable (3 years to 15+). When a post-warranty Thermador dishwasher fails, the repair-or-replace math usually favors repair: a $400–$600 repair on a $2,500 appliance is a clear win over replacement. We'll tell you honestly if the math flips the other way, occasional 15-year-old units with multiple cascading failures where replacement makes more sense.

FAQ

Thermador dishwasher repair, common questions

Are Thermador dishwashers the same as Bosch inside?

Very close. Both are made by BSH Home Appliances, historically in the same European factories, now in New Bern, NC for the Radiance Collection. Most Thermador service parts cross-reference with Bosch Benchmark, pumps, valves, heating elements, latches. We stock both. Thermador differentiators are Star Speed heater, Zeolite StarDry, tighter sound insulation, and branded electronics.

My dishwasher won't drain

Start with the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub, 80% of these calls end with filter cleaning and no parts. If the filter is clear, check the drain hose (kinks under the cabinet, blockage at the air gap or disposal). Failed drain pump motor is next ($245–$325). We diagnose by running a drain cycle and listening at the pump for the characteristic whine.

Dishes aren't getting clean, films and spots

Filter first (restricted water flow to spray arms). Then spray arm nozzle cleaning (LA hard water mineral buildup). Then heating element test (if wash water isn't reaching 140°F detergent doesn't dissolve). Fourth, rinse aid dispenser refill and flow check. Most clean-result calls resolve without replacement parts.

How much does Thermador dishwasher repair cost?

Diagnostic $89, waived with repair. Common jobs: wash pump $385–$525, drain pump $245–$325, heating element $220–$310, door latch $215–$295, control board $485–$680. Full pricing table above.

Error E15 or E22, what do they mean?

E15 is water in the base pan, flood protection tripped. Source-trace the leak (inlet valve gasket, sump, door seal, pump housing) before resetting. E22 is a drain/filter clog, clear the filter, verify the drain hose, test the drain pump. Neither code is a parts-replacement default, both usually resolved with cleaning and leak inspection.

The Home Connect app isn't working

Almost always router-side or firmware-level, not hardware. We reset the WiFi module, re-pair to network, check for stalled firmware updates. Actual WiFi module replacement is about 5% of connectivity calls ($165 if needed).

How fast can you come out?

Same-day on calls before 1 PM weekday in regular coverage. Dishwashers are lower-priority than refrigerators or range failures, but we still usually fit you in same-afternoon.

Ready to schedule Thermador dishwasher service?

Same day available. $89 diagnostic, waived with repair. Labor and parts quoted before we start.
