Burner ignition diagnostic
About 35 to 40 percent of "won't light" calls resolve at $120 plus burner port cleaning, no parts.
Charbroiler burner-ignition failures cluster around five mechanisms. (1) Burner port carbon and grease buildup blocking gas flow at the orifice, year 2+ restaurant duty, $120 to $260 cleaning service per burner section. (2) Spark electrode or spark module failure on electronic ignition models (Vulcan VCCB, newer MagiKitch'n, electronic Wolf VRB), year 5 to 7, $260 to $440 replacement. (3) Pilot light or thermocouple failure on standing-pilot models (Imperial IRB, older MagiKitch'n, older Garland), year 4 to 7, $220 to $340. (4) Gas valve safety lockout (electronic models) or gas valve mechanical failure (older units), $120 reset to $680 replacement. (5) Gas pressure drop at the unit inlet under peak kitchen demand, $200 to $600 regulator-side fix.
This page covers commercial charbroilers (standalone radiant gas, lava rock, ceramic briquette, and char-rock units). For restaurant range with integrated charbroiler module see range repair. For grill (commercial outdoor cooking grill) see commercial grill repair. Yes, the categories are confusing in this trade.

Field observations
Top causes by frequency.
- Burner port carbon and grease buildup (year 2+ restaurant duty). Single most common cause. Continuous grease vapor condensate plus carbon from flame contact. $120-260 cleaning service per burner section, often resolves without parts.
- Spark module / spark electrode failure (electronic ignition, year 5-7). Click but no spark, or spark but no flame. Vulcan VCCB, electronic MagiKitch'n, electronic Wolf VRB. $260-440 replacement.
- Pilot light / thermocouple failure (standing pilot, year 4-7). Pilot won't stay lit, won't ignite main burner. Imperial IRB, older MagiKitch'n, older Garland. $220-340.
- Gas valve safety lockout. Electronic state after 3 failed ignition attempts. $120 reset only or parts as needed.
- Gas valve mechanical failure (year 7+). Sticking, internal leak, modulation failure. $480-680 replacement.
- Gas supply pressure drop (manifold-shared multi-equipment kitchens). Below-spec at unit inlet under peak load. Plumber referral $200-600.
- Pilot orifice clog (covered patios, dust). Less common indoors but happens on patio-installed charbroilers. $120-200 cleaning.
- Burner head erosion (year 8+ heavy duty). Replacement $340-480 per head.
Diagnostic walkthrough
Practitioner sequence on every won't-light call.
- Identify the failure scope. Single burner out vs whole unit. Single-burner points to that station; whole-unit points to upstream supply or master ignition.
- Verify gas supply. Isolation valve open, supply line uncompromised, no recent kitchen plumbing work that might have closed an upstream valve.
- Manometer pressure under load. Inlet pressure with the failing burner attempting to fire plus other kitchen equipment running at peak demand. Below-spec triggers regulator-side investigation.
- Visual burner head and port inspection. Carbon buildup at orifices, heat-warped port plate, visible cracks. Photo documentation.
- Spark or pilot test. Visual spark at electrode (electronic), audible click on ignition module. Pilot flame strength and steadiness on standing-pilot models.
- Multimeter thermocouple under flame (standing pilot models). Voltage output during pilot; weak signal indicates failure.
- Gas valve sequence test. Continuity, solenoid actuation on electronic models; mechanical actuation test on standing-pilot models.
- Combustion quality verification. Blue flame steady at full firing; yellow or lazy flame indicates incomplete combustion (port issue or pressure issue).
Honest opinion
Burner port cleaning is overdue maintenance, not a repair surprise.
About a third of LA restaurant charbroiler "won't light" calls resolve at burner port cleaning with no parts replacement. The reason: most operators don't schedule deep burner cleaning until something fails. The internet will tell you to budget for major repair on a 5-year unit; in our experience, a 5-year unit that's been deep-cleaned every 6 to 9 months runs as well as a 1-year unit. Schedule the cleaning, save the surprise. Some shops won't tell you this because cleaning service is lower margin than parts replacement. We tell you because it's what we'd do for our own restaurant.

FAQ
Burner-not-lighting questions.
One burner on our 6-burner Vulcan VCCB-36 won't light. Others work. What's the cause?
Single-burner-out on a multi-burner charbroiler is one of three things in our experience. (1) Carbon and grease buildup at that specific burner port, blocking gas flow at the orifice. Most common single cause on year 2+ restaurant duty. Diagnostic includes burner head removal and deep cleaning, $120 to $200 service if no parts. (2) Spark electrode at that burner failed (electronic ignition models like Vulcan VCCB) or pilot at that station weak (standing pilot models). $260 to $440 spark module replacement, $220 to $340 thermocouple. (3) Gas valve at that station stuck closed. Less common but more expensive, $480 to $680. We test cheap-first.
Whole charbroiler dead, no burners light. Different diagnostic?
Yes. Whole-unit failure points to upstream: gas supply, main gas valve, master pilot or master ignition module. Walk-around test sequence: (1) gas supply isolation valve fully open, (2) gas pressure at unit inlet under load (manometer test, target 6-8 inches WC for natural gas commercial, 11 inches WC for propane), (3) main gas valve solenoid test, (4) master ignition module on electronic units. About 25 to 30 percent of whole-unit failures resolve at the gas pressure measurement (regulator-side problem upstream of the appliance). Repair quote depends on which step fails.
Burner port carbon buildup on a 3-year-old MagiKitch'n. Routine?
Routine on year 2+ restaurant duty. Charbroiler burner ports clog with grease vapor condensate plus carbon from continuous flame contact. Symptom: progressively weaker flame, burner won't light at all when buildup exceeds critical threshold. Cleaning involves burner head removal, port-by-port wire-brush plus compressed air, sometimes acid-based descaling on heavy buildup. Service runs $120 to $260 per burner section depending on buildup severity. Most LA restaurants doing 8 to 14 hr daily service should schedule deep burner cleaning every 6 to 9 months. We see units that haven't been cleaned in 3+ years where the cleaning labor exceeds new-burner-head cost ($340 to $480 per head).
Health Department flagged us on burner cleanliness. What do we need?
LA County Department of Public Health and equivalent OC, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside agencies inspect commercial cooking equipment for grease buildup, surface sanitization, and proper gas combustion (yellow flame indicates incomplete combustion, which produces carbon monoxide). A flagged inspection report typically requires documented professional cleaning service plus follow-up inspection. We document our service work in writing for the customer's HD compliance file: scope of cleaning, before/after photos when requested, parts replaced, gas pressure verification, combustion-quality verification. Standard practice for LA restaurant work.
Gas pressure drop mid-service. Real concern on commercial charbroilers?
Real and not uncommon. A 6-burner commercial charbroiler at full demand pulls 180,000 to 240,000 BTU per hour. If the upstream regulator was sized for the original install but a new fryer or steamer was added later sharing the same supply line, the manifold can run below spec under peak demand. Symptom: burners light fine at startup, run weak or extinguish under full kitchen load. Diagnostic is manometer at unit inlet during peak operation. Fix is typically regulator-side (plumber referral, $200 to $600 depending on scope) rather than appliance-side. We test on every charbroiler call where the operator describes time-of-day inconsistency.
What's the brand failure-pattern map for LA?
Vulcan VCCB (ITW Food Equipment Group): spark module year 5-7, port carbon year 2-4 typical. Imperial IRB (Korean independent): pilot light cluster issue, year 4-6 thermocouple replacement. Garland MGM Master (Welbilt): gas valve year 7-9, premium-tier longevity. MagiKitch'n MK (Middleby, Wolf Industrial commercial line, separate from Wolf residential): radiant tile damage year 5-8 plus burner port carbon. Bakers Pride XX (Middleby): pilot orifice clog year 3-5. Star Ultra-Max (Middleby): mid-tier, spark module year 4-6. Wolf VRB (ITW, again separate from Wolf residential and Wolf Outdoor): premium duty cycle, burner head erosion year 6-8.
