02 · The causes, in order
Four causes, most common first.
1. Disposal knockout plug (new install)
New garbage disposals ship with a solid plug sealing the dishwasher drain port. If it wasn't punched out during the install, the dishwasher physically cannot drain. This is the number one cause when a GE stops draining right after disposal or sink work.
2. Clogged filter or drain hose
Food debris, glass grit, and grease collect in the bottom filter and in the drain hose behind the unit. A partial clog slows the drain until the C2 timeout trips; a full clog stops it cold.
3. Blocked air gap
If your sink has an air gap (the small chrome cap on the counter), it can pack with debris and back the water up into the dishwasher. Popping it open and clearing it is a two-minute fix.
4. Failed drain pump
When every path above is clear and water still stands, the drain pump itself has usually failed or its check valve is stuck. This is the one that needs a meter and a replacement part.
03 · What you can safely check
Five safe steps before you call.
- Scoop the standing water. Bail it out with a cup and sponge so you can work and see the filter.
- Run the garbage disposal. A disposal full of scraps blocks the shared drain. Run it with water for a few seconds and try a rinse cycle.
- Clean the filter. Twist out the filter at the bottom of the tub, rinse it, and clear any debris in the sump below it.
- Check the drain hose. Look behind the dishwasher for a kinked or crushed hose, a common issue after the unit has been pushed back into the cabinet.
- Clear the air gap. If present, pop the chrome cap on the counter and clean out any gunk.
Where to stop: filter, hose, disposal, and air gap are all safe. Do not remove the drain pump or open the electrical control yourself, and be careful of broken glass in the sump. If water still stands after these steps, it's the pump or the control, and that's our job.

Why is my GE dishwasher not draining?

What does the C2 code mean on a GE dishwasher?
C2 means the dishwasher tried to pump out but couldn't finish draining within its maximum time, roughly seven minutes. It is a drain-timeout code, not a diagnosis of which part failed. The cause is the same list as any GE drain problem: a blockage in the disposal, filter, hose, or air gap, or a weak drain pump. Clear the blockages first; if C2 returns with everything clear, the pump is the likely culprit.
I just installed a garbage disposal and now the dishwasher won't drain.
That is the classic one. New garbage disposals ship with a solid knockout plug sealing the dishwasher drain port. How do I clear a GE dishwasher that won't drain?
Safe, in order: scoop the standing water out, then remove and rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub, check the drain hose behind the unit for a kink or clog, run the garbage disposal for a few seconds (a full disposal blocks the shared drain), and clean the air gap on the sink if you have one. Re-run a rinse cycle. If water still stands after all that, the drain pump or control needs a tech.
