01 Β· Dishwasher not draining

Standing water at the bottom of the tub. Three places it almost always lives.

Standing water after a dishwasher cycle traces to one of three places about 85% of the time: the filter at the bottom of the tub, the drain pump itself, or the drain hose between the dishwasher and the kitchen plumbing. The other 15% splits between the air gap on top of the sink, a garbage disposal knockout plug that was never removed at install, and (rarely) the control board misreading the cycle state.

SoCal's hard water is the variable that changes the math. LADWP, MWD, Calleguas, Santa Margarita, and Rancho California municipal water averages 12 to 18 grains per gallon hardness, harder than most US cities. Calcium and magnesium accumulate on the filter, inside the drain pump impeller housing, and on the lower spray arm hub faster than in soft-water markets. That is why filter cleaning resolves a meaningful share of LA-area no-drain calls without any parts replacement.

We service drain failures across LA County, Orange County, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. Same-day across the central counties. BHGS Licensed #A49573 and EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410). 90-day warranty on parts and labor.

02 Β· Top 5 causes of standing water

In honest frequency order.

1. Filter clog (40 to 50% of calls)

The cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub catches food debris, glass shards, label fragments, and (in SoCal) accumulated mineral buildup. When it clogs, water cannot reach the drain pump intake, so the pump runs dry or stalls. Symptom: standing water plus often a faint humming sound during the drain phase. Fix: pull the filter, rinse under hot water, scrub with a toothbrush, reinstall. Most homeowners can do this; most don't, because nobody told them.

Diagnostic: Visual inspection. Filter caked with food and mineral residue is unambiguous.

Repair: Filter clean is often $89 diagnostic only, no parts charged. We don't bill for parts when there are no parts.

2. Drain pump failure (20 to 25% of calls)

The drain pump is the small motorized impeller that pushes wash water up through the drain hose to the sink plumbing. Year 6 to 9 typical service life on LA-area dishwashers (faster than soft-water markets due to mineral abrasion on the impeller). When the pump motor fails or the impeller seizes, water stays in the tub regardless of filter condition.

Diagnostic: Listen during the drain phase. Functioning pump produces a steady whirring sound for 30 to 90 seconds. Silence equals motor failure. Loud grinding equals impeller jammed (often by a fruit pit, broken glass, or label adhesive).

Repair: Drain pump replacement $260 to $440 typical, including labor.

3. Drain hose kink, clog, or high-loop failure (15% of calls)

The drain hose runs from the dishwasher under the cabinet to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Two failure modes: kink (cabinet movement, dishwasher pulled out for prior service) or interior clog (grease buildup over years narrows the hose ID). High-loop is a code requirement (the hose must rise to under-counter height before dropping to the disposal) that prevents drain water from siphoning back. Failed high-loop causes intermittent backflow.

Diagnostic: Pull the dishwasher forward, visually inspect the hose run, check the high loop is intact, blow air through to confirm no clog.

Repair: Hose replacement $180 to $280, sometimes just re-routing if the kink is the only issue ($89 diagnostic, no parts).

4. Air gap clog (10% of calls)

The chrome cap on top of your sink (next to the faucet) is the air gap. Required by California plumbing code on most installations. Drain water from the dishwasher runs up through the air gap before going down to the disposal or sink drain. Debris accumulates in the air gap chamber over years and blocks flow.

Diagnostic: Pop the chrome cap, look inside the chamber for debris.

Repair: Clean the chamber. $120 to $180 if part of a service visit; usually combined with filter and hose check.

5. Garbage disposal knockout plug not removed (rare but specific)

New garbage disposals ship with a knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet stub. Installer is supposed to remove the plug before connecting the dishwasher drain hose. If the plug is left in place, the dishwasher cannot drain into the disposal at all. Symptom: dishwasher worked fine until garbage disposal install last week, now it doesn't drain at all.

Diagnostic: Disconnect dishwasher hose at the disposal, look up at the inlet, see the white plastic plug still in place.

Repair: Knockout the plug, reconnect the hose. $89 diagnostic only, no parts. We see this 4 to 6 times per month following recent disposal install. The fix is fast; the cause is installer error not appliance failure, and we tell you straight.

03 Β· How we diagnose

Six-step protocol. 15 to 25 minutes from arrival.

  1. Filter inspection. Pull the filter, photograph the buildup, note food vs mineral content. Often diagnostic ends here.
  2. Drain pump audio test. Run a drain cycle, listen for pump activity. Silent = motor failure. Grinding = impeller jam. Whirring without water movement = impeller worn.
  3. Drain hose check. Pull the unit forward, visually inspect the hose run, verify the high loop is intact, check for kinks at cabinet edge.
  4. Air gap chamber inspection. Pop the chrome cap on the sink top, look for debris.
  5. Disposal connection check. If recent disposal install, verify knockout plug was removed.
  6. Control board codes if equipped. Modern dishwashers (Bosch, Miele, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid 2014+) display drain-related error codes (Bosch E22 / E24, Samsung 5C / 5E, LG OE, Whirlpool/KitchenAid F9E1). Codes confirm or contradict the visual findings.

Total diagnostic time 15 to 25 minutes. We give you a written quote before any repair. $89 residential diagnostic, waived if you proceed with repair.

05 Β· Brand-specific drain notes

Quick reference for the brands we see most.

  • Bosch / Thermador. Filter twist-locks counter-clockwise from the bottom of the tub. E22 = filter clog, E24 = drain pump or hose. Bosch 800-series and Thermador share the same drain pump architecture.
  • KitchenAid / Whirlpool / Maytag. Filter is a two-piece assembly (upper screen plus cylindrical lower). F9E1 = drain failure. KitchenAid 2014-2019 models have a known drain pump fatigue pattern at year 6 to 8.
  • Samsung. 5C / 5E error codes confirm drain failure. StormWash and DW-series share drain pump platform.
  • LG. OE error code is the standard drain-failure code. Most LG drain pumps are direct-drive with a conical filter that traps debris efficiently but clogs from mineral buildup faster in SoCal hard water.
  • Miele. Filter is a multi-stage triangular tray system. F11 = drain failure, F12 = water inlet. Miele drain pumps have the longest service life of the major brands (year 10 to 14 typical) but are more expensive when they do fail.
  • GE Profile / CafΓ©. Older units use beep code patterns; newer GDT/ZDT show numeric codes. Drain pump replacement on CafΓ© series requires bottom-front access, slightly longer labor time.
  • Cove. Sub-Zero Group. Premium dishwasher line. Drain pump platform shared with select Bosch generations, so parts pipeline is reliable.

06 Β· Repair vs replace

When the math tilts toward replacement.

Under 8 years old with drain pump failure, repair almost always. $260 to $440 for the pump buys 6 to 8 more years of operation on a unit that originally cost $800 to $3,500.

8 to 12 years old, depends on price tier. Mid-tier units (under $1,200 original) start tilting toward replacement when the repair quote crosses $400, especially if other components are showing wear. Premium and luxury units (Bosch 800-series, Miele, Thermador, Cove, KitchenAid premium) almost always repair through year 12 to 15 because the chassis outlasts the components and replacement runs $1,800 to $3,500+ before installation.

12+ years on mid-tier with cascading failures (drain pump plus heating element plus control board within months) is replacement territory. We tell you straight when that's the right call instead of charging you for a repair that's bridging a unit on its way out.

07 Β· Why homeowners call us

Seven reasons.

  • Filter cleaning resolves 40 to 50% of calls with no parts. We don't manufacture repairs. If it's a filter, that's the diagnostic, and we tell you.
  • SoCal hard water expertise. LADWP, MWD, Calleguas, Santa Margarita, Rancho California water hardness shapes failure timing. We factor it in.
  • Brand-specific code translation. Bosch E22 vs Samsung 5C vs LG OE vs Whirlpool F9E1, all different conventions, all point at drain-related faults but with brand-specific repair trees.
  • Common drain parts on the van. Bosch and KitchenAid drain pumps, common drain hose lengths, replacement filter assemblies for the major brands.
  • BHGS Licensed #A49573 and EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410). See our licensing page and EPA 608 page.
  • $89 residential diagnostic, no after-hours surcharge. Phones answered 24/7.
  • Same-day across LA, OC, Ventura. Next-day for Rancho Cucamonga and Temecula.

Sister sub-services: dishwasher not cleaning dishes, dishwasher leaking water, dishwasher error codes. Parent: residential dishwasher repair pillar.

08 Β· FAQ

Dishwasher not draining, common questions.

Is some standing water at the filter normal?

A small amount (less than a cup) at the bottom near the filter is normal on most modern dishwashers; it keeps the seal hydrated between cycles. Standing water filling the tub bottom or covering the heating element is not normal. If you see water above the lower spray arm hub at the start of a cycle, the previous cycle did not drain properly.

Can I clean the filter myself?

Yes, and we recommend it as monthly maintenance, especially in SoCal hard water areas. Most dishwasher filters twist out from the bottom of the tub (Bosch, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Samsung, LG). Rinse under hot water, scrub with an old toothbrush, reinstall. If standing water returns within a week, the filter is not the only issue and you need diagnostic. We do filter cleaning as part of every drain-related service call.

How fast can you come for standing water?

Same-day across LA, Orange, Ventura in most cases. Phones answered 24/7. Dispatch scheduling 8 AM to 8 PM Mon-Sat. Riverside and San Bernardino typically next-day. No emergency surcharge. $89 residential diagnostic, applied toward repair.

I just installed a garbage disposal and now my dishwasher won't drain. Coincidence?

Not coincidence. New garbage disposals ship with a knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet that the installer is supposed to remove. If the installer skipped that step, the dishwasher cannot drain into the disposal. Clear the plug (or have the installer come back) and the drain restores. We see this 4 to 6 times per month on no-drain calls following recent disposal install.

Does SoCal hard water affect drain pump life?

Yes. LADWP, MWD, Calleguas, and the Inland Empire municipal supplies run 12 to 18 grains per gallon hardness. Calcium and magnesium accumulate inside the drain pump impeller housing and on the filter, both reduce flow. Pumps in LA-area dishwashers typically last 6 to 9 years vs 10 to 12 in soft-water markets. Annual filter cleanout extends pump life meaningfully.

What's your warranty?

90 days SDAR labor warranty on every repair, including drain pump replacements. If the same component fails within 90 days, we replace it at no charge. BHGS Licensed #A49573 and EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410). BBB A+ accredited.
