01 Β· Dishwasher not cleaning dishes

Three categories of "not cleaning." Most LA calls trace to the first one.

"Dishes coming out dirty" is one of the most common dishwasher service calls we run, and the underlying causes split into three categories. Mechanical faults (spray arm, wash pump, detergent dispenser, heating element). Water-side faults (inlet valve restriction, hard water mineral residue, water temperature too low). Loading and detergent problems (pre-rinsing too aggressively, wrong detergent, improper rack placement).

Across SoCal, hard water is the silent variable that connects all three categories. LADWP, MWD, Calleguas, Santa Margarita, and Rancho California municipal water averages 12 to 18 grains per gallon. That mineral content accumulates in spray arm port holes, on the heating element, on the inlet valve screen, and in the detergent dispenser solenoid. A dishwasher that worked fine in year 3 starts producing dirty dishes in year 6 because mineral buildup has degraded multiple components simultaneously, even though the machine itself is functioning correctly.

We service cleaning failures across LA County, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. Same-day across the central counties. BHGS Licensed #A49573 and EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410). 90-day warranty.

02 Β· Top 6 causes of poor cleaning

In honest frequency order.

1. Clogged spray arm ports (30% of calls)

Calcium and magnesium from SoCal hard water deposit on the inside walls of spray arm port holes. Over years, the deposits narrow the openings, water pressure drops, and wash performance falls off. Dishes come out with food residue, streaks, and partial cleaning especially on the upper rack.

Diagnostic: Pull the spray arms, hold up to light, look at the ports. Mineral buildup is unambiguous.

Repair: Vinegar soak (30 to 60 minutes), wire-brush the ports, reinstall. Often $89 diagnostic only, no parts. Spray arm replacement $180 to $340 if buildup is too severe to clear.

2. Detergent dispenser not opening at the right time (15 to 20% of calls)

The dispenser door has a small wax motor or solenoid that releases at the correct point in the cycle. When that fails, the detergent stays trapped, and the wash phase runs without detergent. Dishes come out as if the cycle didn't run properly, because chemically it didn't.

Diagnostic: Run a cycle, listen and watch through the door window if visible. If detergent is still in the dispenser at end of cycle, the dispenser failed.

Repair: Detergent dispenser assembly $200 to $380.

3. Failing wash pump or circulation pump (15% of calls)

The wash pump (separate from the drain pump on most dishwashers) generates the water pressure that drives the spray arms. When the pump motor wears out, pressure drops, spray pattern weakens, dishes don't get hit hard enough to clean. Year 8 to 12 typical service life.

Diagnostic: Listen during wash phase, measure pressure indirectly via spray arm rotation speed (slow rotation equals low pressure), amperage check on the motor.

Repair: Wash pump replacement $480 to $820 depending on brand and access difficulty.

4. Water inlet valve mineral clog (10% of calls)

The inlet valve is the solenoid-controlled valve where water enters the dishwasher. The screen on the inlet side accumulates mineral buildup, reducing fill volume. Less water means lower wash pressure and incomplete cleaning. Often pairs with hard water symptoms elsewhere.

Diagnostic: Time the fill cycle, measure water volume reaching the tub vs spec.

Repair: Inlet valve replacement $200 to $340.

5. Heating element failure (10% of calls)

Wash water needs to be hot (130 to 140Β°F) for detergent to work and grease to release. If the heating element fails, water never heats during the wash cycle, grease persists on dishes, sometimes redepositing as a film. Less common on Bosch and Miele (which rely on water from the home water heater) than on KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE which have in-tub heating.

Diagnostic: Check water temperature mid-cycle with an instant-read thermometer or via control board diagnostic mode.

Repair: Heating element $260 to $460.

6. Loading and detergent issues (10 to 15% of calls)

Honest framing: not every "not cleaning" call is a broken machine. Common patterns we find: customer pre-rinses dishes thoroughly (turbidity sensor reads load as clean, runs short cycle, dishes come out worse), uses pods in hard water without rinse aid, loads dishes facing the wrong direction, or runs Eco cycles expecting Heavy results. We tell you straight when the machine is fine and the cause is procedural.

Diagnostic: Visual loading check, detergent inspection, cycle setting confirmation.

Repair: $89 diagnostic only, plus advice. We don't manufacture repairs when the machine is working.

03 Β· SoCal hard water and your dishwasher

Cloudy glasses are not always the dishwasher's fault.

Across LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside, municipal water hardness averages 12 to 18 grains per gallon. That puts SoCal in the upper third of US hardness. Glassware that comes out cloudy with white film is almost always hard water mineral residue, not a malfunction. The mineral content is also why every cleaning-related dishwasher repair we run includes a spray arm port inspection and an inlet valve screen check, both common buildup points.

The practical maintenance protocol for SoCal:

  • Rinse aid in the dispenser, refilled monthly. Reduces spotting, helps drying, and improves cycle effectiveness in hard water meaningfully.
  • Citric-acid dishwasher cleaner monthly. Lemi Shine, Affresh, or generic equivalent. One cycle on Heavy with the cleaner clears mineral buildup before it accumulates.
  • Powder detergent over pods or gels in heavy-use households. Powders with water conditioners (Cascade Platinum Plus, Finish Quantum) outperform pods in hard water.
  • Whole-house water softener consideration if hardness exceeds 15 grains per gallon. Long-term solution that benefits the dishwasher, the washing machine, the water heater, and the whole house. Plumber trade for installation.

None of these are sales pitches. We're an appliance repair company; we don't sell detergent, rinse aid, or water softeners. The recommendations are observational from running hundreds of service calls per year across SoCal.

05 Β· Brand-specific cleaning notes

What's distinct on each brand.

  • Bosch / Thermador. PowerWash zone (lower right) gives concentrated wash for heavily soiled cookware. Lower spray arm pops up; upper pulls down. Bosch 800-series CrystalDry and Thermador StarSpeed wash systems share parts platform.
  • Miele. Three-tier spray system (lower, middle, upper). AutoOpen Drying releases the door at end of cycle. Miele wash pumps have the longest service life of any major brand (year 12 to 15 typical) but parts cost more.
  • KitchenAid / Whirlpool / Maytag. FreeFlex middle rack and ProWash sensor systems. Lower spray arm typically pops off without tools.
  • Samsung. StormWash zone for cookware. WaterWall (on premium models) replaces conventional spray arm with a moving water-curtain bar. WaterWall service is brand-specific.
  • LG. QuadWash four spray arms. TrueSteam steam injection on premium models. Direct Drive wash motor (different architecture from belt-driven competitors).
  • GE Profile / CafΓ©. Dedicated bottle wash jets on premium models. Three-arm wash system.
  • Cove. Sub-Zero Group premium line. Heat-dry plus auto-open dry. Premium parts pipeline through Sub-Zero authorized network.

06 Β· Repair vs replace

When the math tilts toward replacement.

Under 8 years old, repair almost always. Spray arm clean, dispenser replacement, even wash pump are all under-$800 fixes that buy years more service.

8 to 12 years on mid-tier units (under $1,200 original), repair-vs-replace turns case-by-case. A wash pump on a $700 dishwasher is a real conversation; replacement runs $700 to $1,200 plus install, repair $480 to $820. We do the math out loud.

Premium and luxury units (Bosch 800-series, Miele, Thermador, Cove, KitchenAid premium) almost always repair through year 12 to 15. Replacement runs $1,800 to $3,500+ before installation, and the chassis outlasts the components. Wash pump on a 10-year-old Miele equals straightforward repair.

07 Β· Why homeowners call us

Seven reasons.

  • Hard water is named, not generic. LADWP, MWD, Calleguas, Santa Margarita, Rancho California; we know which water serves your zip code and how it affects your dishwasher.
  • Spray arm clean before parts replacement. Mineral buildup clears with vinegar and a wire brush in many cases. We try the no-parts fix first.
  • Honest about loading and detergent. If the machine is fine and the cause is procedural, we tell you and don't manufacture a repair.
  • Brand-specific knowledge. Bosch PowerWash vs Samsung WaterWall vs LG QuadWash vs Miele three-tier; each has different diagnostic and repair tree.
  • Common parts on the van. Common spray arms, dispenser assemblies, inlet valves, heating elements for major brands.
  • BHGS Licensed #A49573 and EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410). See our licensing page.
  • Same-day across LA, OC, Ventura. $89 residential diagnostic, no after-hours surcharge.

08 Β· FAQ

Dishwasher not cleaning, common questions.

Cloudy glasses with white film, is my dishwasher broken?

Almost always not. Cloudy glassware in SoCal is hard water mineral residue, not a dishwasher fault. LADWP, MWD, Calleguas, Santa Margarita, and Rancho California water averages 12 to 18 grains per gallon hardness. Calcium deposits build on glassware over time. The fix is rinse aid (Jet-Dry, Finish, or equivalent) and possibly a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner monthly, plus consideration of a whole-house water softener if hardness is over 15 grains. We confirm the spray arms and inlet valve are clear, then advise on water-side fixes.

Can I clean the spray arms myself?

Yes. Pop the spray arms off (most twist or pop off the hub), soak in white vinegar for 30 to 60 minutes, scrub spray ports with a toothpick or fine wire to clear mineral buildup, rinse, reinstall. Works on Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Frigidaire. Miele's lower spray arm has a different removal procedure. We do this as part of every "not cleaning" diagnostic visit if mineral buildup is the issue.

Is rinse aid really necessary in LA?

Yes. SoCal hard water makes rinse aid meaningfully effective at reducing spotting and film on glassware. It also helps with drying because most current dishwashers (especially Bosch and Miele) use condensation drying that depends on water sheeting off dishes evenly. Without rinse aid in hard water, drying is poor and residue is heavy.

Should I pre-rinse dishes before loading?

Light scraping yes; full pre-rinsing no. Modern dishwashers (especially Bosch, Miele, KitchenAid 800-series) have turbidity sensors that detect how dirty the water is and adjust the cycle accordingly. Pre-rinsing tells the sensor the load is clean, the cycle runs short, and dishes come out worse. Scrape solids into the trash, leave the rest for the dishwasher.

What detergent works best in LA hard water?

Powder detergents with built-in water conditioners (Cascade Platinum Plus, Finish Quantum) tend to outperform single-ingredient pods or gels in our hard water. Pods are convenient but the dosing is fixed; powder lets you adjust dose to load size. We don't sell detergent, this is just what we observe across hundreds of service calls per year.
