Filter service
We'd rather sell you a $30 charcoal filter than a $300 service call. Honest answer: most filter issues are customer-side maintenance.
Most range hood filter calls resolve at the diagnostic visit with cleaning instructions and (for ductless hoods) a charcoal filter replacement, not with appliance repair. Aluminum mesh grease filters are dishwasher-cleanable; the customer can do it in 5 minutes. Charcoal filters on ductless hoods need replacement every 3 to 6 months; new cartridges run $30 to $80 each. We tell every customer this on the diagnostic visit because most repair shops won't.
Real filter-related repairs do exist: latch or clip mechanisms wear out at year 8+ ($40 to $120 part). Filter housings rust in coastal LA homes from marine layer humidity at year 7+ (Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Pacific Palisades, parts of Malibu). Aftermarket filters that customers bought from non-authorized sources sometimes cause performance issues even when they fit dimensionally. We diagnose all of these and recommend OEM where appropriate.

Filter types
Three filter types, different rules.
Grease filter (aluminum or stainless steel mesh)
Most common on mid-tier residential hoods. Catches grease droplets in airflow. Dishwasher-cleanable, top rack, no detergent needed. Clean every 1 to 3 months depending on cooking volume; SoCal homes that cook frequently with high-BTU ranges (Wolf, Viking, Thermador, BlueStar) should clean monthly. A loaded filter restricts airflow 50 percent or more and is a fire hazard if grease builds up enough to catch a flame from below. Replacement runs $20 to $60 aluminum mesh, $40 to $120 stainless steel mesh.
Baffle filter (V-shaped or interlocking blade stainless steel)
Pro-style hoods (Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Vent-A-Hood, Best, Zephyr Pro) use baffle filters. Restaurant-grade architecture: blades force airflow to change direction, grease droplets impact the smooth blade surface and drain into the collection channel below. Easier to clean than mesh (smooth surfaces, no clogged tiny holes), longer life (15+ years typical), rated for higher CFM without performance loss. Dishwasher-cleanable. Replacement runs $80 to $240.
Charcoal filter (activated carbon, ductless hoods only)
Activated-carbon cartridges absorb cooking odors and grease vapors on ductless (recirculating) hoods. NOT cleanable. Replacement every 3 to 6 months depending on cooking volume; saturated charcoal stops absorbing and the hood loses its odor-control function. Replacement cartridges run $30 to $80 each. Ducted hoods don't have charcoal filters; they vent outside.
Field observations
Top causes by frequency.
- Grease filter loaded (#1, customer-side). Dishwasher-cleanable. $89 dx + cleaning instructions resolves; we'd rather educate than overcharge.
- Charcoal filter saturated (ductless only). Replace every 3 to 6 months, $30 to $80 each, NOT cleanable.
- Filter latch or clip broken (year 8+). Mechanical wear. $40 to $120 part plus install.
- Filter housing rust (coastal LA, year 7+). Marine layer humidity. Surface rust paint $180 to $300; structural replacement $260 to $440 mid-tier, $440 to $720 pro-style.
- Aftermarket filter performance issues. Wrong fit, lower-quality material. We identify and recommend OEM where causing problems.
- Magnetic baffle filter mount weakened (Wolf, Vent-A-Hood, year 10+). Rare-earth magnet weakening. $20 to $80 replacement magnets.
Coastal LA marine layer rust pattern
Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Pacific Palisades, Malibu.
Range hood filter housings in coastal LA homes corrode at year 7+ from marine layer humidity exposure. Aluminum components corrode faster than stainless; older mid-tier hoods with painted or aluminum housings show rust earlier than premium pro-style hoods with full stainless construction. The rust appears as small spots around filter mounting points first, then spreads along housing seams over months.
We assess the structural integrity on the diagnostic visit. Surface rust with intact structure responds well to rust treatment plus appliance-grade paint ($180 to $300, takes about 90 minutes including cure time). Rust-through or structural compromise (where the housing material itself is failing, not just surface) requires housing replacement: $260 to $440 mid-tier, $440 to $720 pro-style. We don't oversell paint when replacement is needed or vice versa; the structural assessment is honest.
Prevention: ventilate the kitchen well during cooking, leave the hood running for 5 to 10 minutes after cooking ends to clear humidity, wipe filter housing dry after cleaning rather than air-drying. Coastal-home customers who add a small dehumidifier to the kitchen often see 5+ extra years of housing life.
Brand notes
Filter type by brand tier.
- Pro-style (Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Vent-A-Hood, Best, Zephyr Pro): baffle filter standard, 15+ year life, $80 to $240 replacement. Magnetic mounting on Wolf and Vent-A-Hood. Wolf Β· Viking Β· Thermador.
- Mid-tier (Broan, KitchenAid, GE Profile, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Frigidaire): aluminum or stainless mesh grease filter, $20 to $120 replacement depending on material. Broan Β· KitchenAid.
- Premium European (Bosch, Miele, Gaggenau, Fisher and Paykel): grease and baffle hybrid systems vary by model; tighter integration with kitchen design. Bosch Β· Miele.
- Ductless (recirculating) variants across all brands: include charcoal filter cartridge in addition to grease/baffle filter. Replacement schedule applies regardless of brand.
Diagnostic walkthrough
Practitioner sequence on every filter call.
- Identify filter types in this hood. Grease, baffle, or grease+charcoal (ductless).
- Pull and inspect each filter. Grease loading, structural integrity, mount condition.
- For grease filter, demonstrate dishwasher cleaning. Customer-side education saves future service calls.
- For charcoal filter (ductless), check saturation and recommend replacement schedule.
- Inspect filter latch or magnetic mount. Mechanical wear at year 8+, magnetic weakening at year 10+.
- Inspect filter housing for rust (coastal LA homes). Surface vs structural assessment.
- Identify aftermarket vs OEM filter. Recommend OEM if aftermarket is causing performance issues.
Honest opinion
We'd rather you call us less often.
Filter issues are largely customer-side maintenance: clean the grease filter monthly, replace the charcoal filter every 3 to 6 months, and your hood's filter system runs fine for the life of the appliance. We tell every customer this on the diagnostic visit. Most repair shops won't because they want the next service call. We'd rather you call us when something genuinely fails (latch broken, housing rusted, magnet weakened) than charge you for a filter clean you could do yourself in 5 minutes. The customer education is part of the visit, no extra charge beyond the $89 diagnostic.

FAQ
Filter questions.
How do I clean my grease filter and how often?
Most aluminum mesh grease filters are dishwasher-cleanable. Pull the filter (squeeze release tabs or unclip depending on hood model), pre-rinse for 30 seconds with warm water to remove loose grease, place top rack of dishwasher, run a normal cycle, no detergent needed beyond the dishwasher's own. Reinstall when dry. Frequency: every 1 to 3 months depending on cooking volume. SoCal homes that cook at home frequently with high-BTU pro-style ranges (Wolf, Viking, Thermador, BlueStar) should clean monthly. A loaded grease filter restricts airflow by 50 percent or more even at full motor speed and is also a fire hazard if it catches a flame from below.
Difference between grease filter and baffle filter?
Grease filters are mesh aluminum or stainless steel screens common on mid-tier residential hoods (Broan, KitchenAid, GE, Samsung, LG). Baffle filters are V-shaped or interlocking-blade stainless steel filters used on pro-style hoods (Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Vent-A-Hood, Zephyr Pro). Baffle filters are restaurant-grade: they catch more grease, they're easier to clean (smooth surfaces, no clogged mesh), they last 15+ years, and they're rated for higher CFM airflow without performance loss. Both are dishwasher-cleanable. Replacement runs: aluminum mesh $20 to $60, stainless steel mesh $40 to $120, baffle filter $80 to $240.
What's a charcoal filter and when does it need replacement?
Charcoal filters are activated-carbon cartridges used on ductless (recirculating) hoods only. They absorb cooking odors and grease vapors before the hood blows filtered air back into the kitchen. They are NOT cleanable. Replacement is required every 3 to 6 months depending on cooking volume; saturated charcoal stops absorbing and the hood loses its odor-control function. Replacement cartridges run $30 to $80 each, ducted hoods don't have charcoal filters at all (they vent outside). If your hood vents to the outside through ductwork, you don't need to worry about charcoal filters.
My filter latch broke. How much to fix?
Filter latch or clip mechanisms wear out at year 8+ on most residential hoods. The latch is a small metal or plastic component that holds the filter in place under spring tension. When it breaks, the filter sags or falls out during operation. Replacement parts run $40 to $120 typical, install during the diagnostic visit. Pro-style hoods with magnetic mounting (Wolf, Vent-A-Hood) use rare-earth magnets that occasionally weaken at year 10+; replacement magnets are $20 to $80.
Filter housing has rust spots. What should we do?
Marine layer humidity in coastal LA homes (Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Pacific Palisades, parts of Malibu) corrodes filter housing components at year 7+. Stainless steel is resistant but not immune; aluminum housings rust faster. Two paths depending on severity. (1) Surface rust with structural integrity intact: rust treatment plus appliance-grade paint, $180 to $300. (2) Rust-through or structural compromise: housing replacement, $260 to $440 mid-tier, $440 to $720 pro-style. We assess on the diagnostic and recommend the right path; we don't oversell paint when replacement is needed or vice versa.
I bought aftermarket filters. Will they work?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and sometimes worse than nothing. Aftermarket grease filters often fit dimensionally but use lower-quality mesh that loads up faster and reduces airflow earlier than OEM. Aftermarket charcoal filters often use less activated carbon, requiring more frequent replacement than the spec suggests. Aftermarket baffle filters for pro-style hoods can have wrong blade angles that reduce grease capture rate. We identify whether your filter is OEM or aftermarket on the diagnostic visit and recommend OEM replacement if the aftermarket is causing performance issues. We don't refuse to install aftermarket filters customers prefer; we just identify when they're causing the actual problem.
What's your warranty?
90 days SDAR labor and parts warranty on the work we perform. Filter cartridges (charcoal especially) have lifespan-based replacement schedules and aren't covered by hardware warranty in the conventional sense. BHGS #A49573, BBB A+ accredited, EPA 608 Universal certified #1346255700410.
