01 · The short answer
Freezer cold, fridge warm? The cold air just isn't getting upstairs.
On nearly every modern refrigerator, all the cold is made at one coil behind the freezer, and a small fan pushes that air up into the fridge compartment. When the freezer stays cold but the fridge turns warm, the cold is still being made, it just isn't being delivered. Three parts cause almost all of these calls: a failed evaporator fan motor, a defrost system that let the coil ice over, or a stuck air damper. Each is a $260 to $460 repair that never touches the sealed refrigerant system. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573, EPA 608 Universal certified, BBB Accredited.
This is one of the most common patterns our techs at Same Day Appliance Repair see, and it is also one of the most misdiagnosed. People assume a warm fridge means a dead compressor or a refrigerant problem, and start pricing a new unit. But if the freezer is still holding temperature, the compressor and the sealed system are almost certainly fine. The problem lives in the parts that move and distribute the cold, not the parts that make it.
Below is what each of the three causes looks like, what you can safely check yourself in a couple of minutes, and where a homeowner should stop and let a tech take over.
02 · The three causes
Evaporator fan, defrost system, or damper.
1. Evaporator fan motor failed (the most common)
The evaporator fan sits behind the back wall of the freezer and blows cold air off the coil, up through a duct, and into the fresh-food section. When the motor seizes or burns out, the freezer keeps its cold because it sits right on the coil, but no air moves to the fridge, so it warms up within a day.
Tell-tale sign: the freezer is cold but dead silent when you listen for a fan. On many units, opening the fridge door shuts the fan off automatically, so listen at the freezer with the door switch held in.
Repair range: $260 to $460 for the motor. This is behind the freezer panel, so it is a tech job, not a homeowner one.
2. Defrost system quit and the coil iced over
Frost-free fridges melt frost off the evaporator on a schedule using a small heater and a control (a timer, a defrost thermostat, or a defrost board). When any of those fails, frost never gets cleared, it packs the coil into a block of ice, and air can no longer pass through it. The fridge cools worse and worse over a week or two, and the freezer eventually weakens too.
Tell-tale sign: a slow decline rather than a sudden failure, and a solid sheet of ice on the freezer back wall if you remove the inner panel.
Repair range: defrost heater $440 to $680, defrost thermostat $260 to $400, defrost timer $260 to $420, integrated defrost board $300 to $540. We test which part actually failed instead of replacing all of them.
3. Air damper stuck closed
Many French-door and side-by-side models use a motorized or manual damper, a little door that opens to let freezer air into the fridge when the fridge calls for cooling. If it sticks closed, the freezer holds temperature but the fridge never gets its share of cold air.
Tell-tale sign: freezer rock solid at its setpoint, fridge climbing into the 50s, and no obvious ice or fan noise problem.
Repair range: $260 to $420 for the damper actuator.
03 · What you can safely check first
Four two-minute checks before you call.
- Clear the vents. Inside the fridge and freezer are air vents that move cold between compartments. A grocery haul stacked against them can choke airflow and mimic a real failure. Pull food back a few inches and give it a few hours.
- Check the dials. A bumped temperature control or an accidental "vacation" / "demo" mode is a surprisingly common cause. Confirm the fridge is set to roughly 37°F and the freezer to 0°F.
- Listen for the evaporator fan. At the freezer, with the door switch held in, listen for a steady whir. Silence points at the fan motor.
- Look for ice. If you can see a solid frost wall on the freezer back panel, that is the defrost system, not the fan.
Where to stop: vents, dials, listening, and looking are all safe. Do not pull apart the sealed refrigerant system, do not attempt compressor or capacitor work, and do not chip ice off a coil with anything metal. Those are where a homeowner check ends and our techs begin.
04 · When to call us
If the vents are clear and the fan is silent or the coil is iced, it's time.
Once you have ruled out blocked vents and a bumped dial, the remaining causes all live behind the freezer panel or in the control system, and they need a meter and the right replacement part. Our techs at Same Day Appliance Repair carry the common evaporator fan motors, defrost parts, and damper actuators for the brands we see most, so the fridge-warm pattern is often a one-visit fix.
We diagnose the split-cooling pattern the same way every time: confirm the freezer temperature, check the fan, pull the panel to inspect the coil for frost, and test the defrost circuit and damper before quoting. You get a written number before any repair begins. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with the repair. Same-day across Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura in most cases; phones answered 24/7.
We handle this pattern across all major brands, including LG, Samsung, GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Sub-Zero, and Bosch. Brand-specific starting points: Samsung refrigerator repair and LG refrigerator repair. If both compartments are warm instead, that is a different cause set covered on our refrigerator not cooling page. Full brand and model coverage lives on the refrigerator repair hub.
Nearby coverage for this repair: Beverly Hills, Pasadena, and Santa Monica. Ready now? Book online or call (424) 325-0520.
05 · FAQ
Fridge warm, freezer cold: common questions.
Why is my fridge not cooling but the freezer is still cold?
On almost every modern refrigerator, all the cold air is made in one place: the evaporator coil behind the freezer wall. A small fan blows that cold air up into the fresh-food compartment. When the freezer stays cold but the fridge turns warm, the cold is still being made, it just isn't reaching the top. The three usual causes are a failed evaporator fan motor, a stuck or frosted-over defrost system, or a broken air damper. All three are common between years 5 and 12, and repair typically runs $260 to $460.
How do I know if it's the evaporator fan?
Open the freezer and listen with the door switch held in (or the light pressed). A healthy evaporator fan makes a steady whir. If the freezer is cold but silent, the fan motor has likely failed and warm air is no longer being pushed to the fridge side. This is a safe thing for a homeowner to check. Actually replacing the motor means pulling the freezer back panel, which is where our techs take over.
Could it be too much frost on the coil?
Yes. Frost-free refrigerators run an automatic defrost cycle every several hours. When the defrost heater, timer, or termination thermostat quits, frost slowly packs the evaporator coil solid, air can't move through it, and the fridge warms up over a week or two while the freezer holds on longer. If you pull the freezer back panel and see a solid wall of ice on the coil, that's the defrost system, not the fan.
Is a fridge that's warm but freezer cold worth repairing?
Usually yes. An evaporator fan, damper, or defrost part is a $260 to $460 repair, and none of it touches the sealed refrigerant system. On a fridge under year 12 that math almost always favors repair over a $1,500-plus replacement. We give you the number before any work starts. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with the repair.
What can I safely try before calling?
Four things, all safe: make sure the fridge and freezer vents inside aren't blocked by stacked food; check that the temperature dials weren't bumped; listen for the evaporator fan in the freezer; and look for a solid ice buildup on the freezer back wall. If food isn't blocking vents and the fan is silent or the coil is iced, it's a component failure and it's time for a tech. Do not attempt to take apart the sealed system or the compressor.
