The lid switch is a safety that tells the control the lid is closed. You can often check it yourself: a working lid switch clicks when you press the lid down at the switch location. Press the lid firmly closed, start a spin, and listen. If you hear the click and it still won't spin, look elsewhere (drain, drive). If there's no click and no spin, the lid switch is the prime suspect — a technician confirms it with a meter and replaces it. GE doesn't usually flag this with a code, which is exactly why it's a hands-on check.
03 · Why a GE won't spin

Lid switch (top-loader, check first)
The washer won't spin unless it senses the lid closed. A worn switch or actuator reads the lid as open. Listen for the click; no click, no spin points here. Inexpensive, common — tech confirms and replaces.
Drain fault
It won't spin on a full tub, so a drain problem reads as a no-spin. Check the drain hose and (front-loaders) the pump filter. Clear the water and the spin usually returns.
Door lock (front-loader)
A GE front-loader won't spin unless the door locks. If the door shuts but won't lock, the lock assembly has failed. Tech repair.
Unbalanced load
A single heavy item or an off-level machine can stop the spin from ramping up. Redistribute and level before assuming a part.
Drive belt, motor, or motor coupling
A worn belt or motor, or (on older GE top-loaders) a failed motor coupling, stops the spin mechanically with no code. A tech diagnosis with a meter.

Try these before it's a repair.
- Test the lid switch — press the lid firmly closed, start a spin, and listen for the click. No click, no spin points at the switch.
- Redistribute the load evenly and make sure the machine is level.
- Clear the drain — unplug first, check the drain hose for a kink and the standpipe; on front-loaders check the pump filter.
- Check a front-loader door shuts fully with nothing caught in the seal.

No-spin is universal — GE just doesn't announce it.
