Samsung Washer Not Spinning? Read the Code First

02 · UR / UB — the unbalanced-load code
The #1 reason a Samsung "won't spin" — and often not a fault.
UR (and UB on some models) means the washer sensed the drum was off-balance and deliberately stopped ramping up to full spin speed — a safety so it doesn't bang and 'walk' across the floor. It's the most common no-spin complaint on Samsung, and frequently nothing is broken:
- A single heavy item — a bath mat, a hoodie, one towel — throws the drum off-center. Add a couple more items to balance it.
- A small load that clumps to one side. Redistribute it evenly around the drum.
- The washer isn't level, or the shipping bolts were never removed at install. Level it; confirm the bolts are out.

03 · Why a Samsung won't spin
The causes, in the order our techs check them.
Unbalanced load — UR / UB (check first)
The most common trigger. Redistribute the load, level the machine, confirm shipping bolts are out. Only a repair if UR persists on balanced loads (worn suspension).
Drain fault — 5C / SC / nd

Door lock — dC
The washer won't spin unless the door locks. Check nothing's caught in it; if it's shut and dC persists, the door lock assembly has failed. Tech repair.
Worn suspension rods / springs
Worn suspension lets the drum move too much, so it can't reach spin speed even on a balanced load — persistent UR is the tell. Tech repair.
Drive belt or motor / rotor
A worn or broken drive belt, or a motor/rotor fault, stops the spin with no balance or drain code. A tech diagnosis with a meter.

Try these before it's a repair.
- Read the code — UR/UB, 5C/SC/nd, or dC tells you which path to take.
- Redistribute the load evenly and add items to balance a single heavy piece; run a spin-only cycle.
- Level the washer and confirm the shipping bolts were removed when it was installed.
- Clear the drain if you see a drain code — unplug first, check the pump filter behind the bottom-front panel and the drain hose.
- Check the door shuts fully with nothing caught in the seal.

Balanced, level, drain clear — still won't spin?
When the load is balanced, the machine is level, the drain is clear, and the door shuts but the Samsung still won't spin, the fault is mechanical — worn suspension, the door lock, the drive belt, or the motor. A washer won't spin on top of a tub full of water — it can't balance and would sling water everywhere — so the control drains first, then spins. If your Samsung shows 5C, SC, or nd (drain codes) along with not spinning, the real fault is the drain, not the spin. Clear the drain — check the pump filter behind the bottom-front panel, the drain hose for a kink, and that the hose isn't shoved too far down the standpipe — and the spin usually returns. What does dC mean, and how does it stop the spin?
dC is Samsung's door-lock code: the washer can't confirm the door is locked, so it won't start the spin (or sometimes the cycle at all) for safety. Check that the door is fully shut and nothing — a garment, the seal — is caught in it, then try again. If the door is clearly closed but dC persists, the door lock assembly has likely failed and needs replacing, which is a technician job. A Samsung won't spin with an unlocked or unconfirmed door by design, so dC is a genuine stop, not a glitch to ignore.
Can I fix a Samsung that won't spin myself?
The common causes, often yes.
