Maytag Washer Error Codes, Decoded

Yes — byte-for-byte. Maytag is a Whirlpool brand and shares the same control architecture. The Maytag Bravos is the same platform as the Whirlpool Cabrio (top-load); the Maytag Maxima is the same platform as the Whirlpool Duet (front-load). F9E1 is long-drain on both, F5E2 is a lock fault on both, F7E1 is a motor/basket-speed fault on both, and the parts come from the same catalog families. So a Maytag code lookup and a Whirlpool code lookup land in the same place. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair.

Usually not, and this trips people up. Maytag's marketed 10-year limited warranty covers PARTS ONLY on two specific components — the drive motor and the wash basket (drum) — not labor, and not the parts that actually throw most error codes. Drain pumps, inlet valves, door and lid locks, control boards, and dispensers are the usual culprits behind F9E1, F8E1, F5E2, and the rest, and those aren't in the 10-year coverage. Check your paperwork, but in practice the code you're chasing is almost always outside it. We'll tell you honestly if your specific failure happens to fall inside the drum-or-motor coverage.

Bravos is the high-efficiency TOP-load washer (lid on top, no front door, no front drain filter). Maxima is the FRONT-load washer (round door, drain pump filter behind the lower kickplate). It changes the diagnosis: on a Maxima a drain code F9E1 starts at that accessible filter, which clears roughly half of drain faults without a part, while on a Bravos there's no filter so the same code goes straight to the pump and hose. Long-drain / drain fault — the washer couldn't pump the water out in time. On a Maxima front-loader, start at the drain pump filter behind the lower kickplate, then the drain hose at the standpipe, then the pump motor ($380 to $540). On a Bravos top-loader there's no filter, so it's a hose-and-pump check. On older Maytag machines this same fault showed as F21 or F02 before Whirlpool renamed the codes around 2011. A motor or basket-speed fault: the control asked for a spin speed and the basket didn't get there, or the rotor-position sensor disagreed. On the Bravos top-load this often traces to the motor rotor position sensor, the shifter (which switches wash and spin), or the drive motor. Older Bravos generations showed this as F51. It's a technician diagnosis because the fix depends on which drive component failed — drive-system repairs run $340 to $620.

A lock fault, and which hardware depends on the machine. On a Maxima front-loader it's the door interlock; on a Bravos top-loader it's the lid lock. Either way the washer won't spin until it confirms the lock, by safety design, and the fix is a $260 to $440 assembly. On top-load Bravos you may also see F5E1 (reads lid open when closed) or F5E3 (won't unlock at the end) — same lock hardware family.

Unplug for about 60 seconds (or flip the breaker), restore power, and run a rinse-and-spin to see if the code returns. On many Maytag models you can also press Cancel/Pause or Stop twice to clear a latched code. A code that clears and stays gone was transient noise; a code that returns every cycle is a real fault. Lock faults (F5E2/F5E3) and motor faults (F7E1) won't clear from a reset when the hardware is down — those are worth a call.

It's the washer telling you it's foaming up — too much detergent, or a non-HE soap in an HE machine. The cycle pauses to clear the suds before it can drain or spin. Cut the dose, switch to HE detergent, and it stops. That's a customer-side fix, no visit needed. If Sud shows even with a correct HE dose, then we'd look at the drain path (trapped suds not clearing) on a visit.

Probably the conversation to have. When a year 8-plus machine throws a drain code, then an unbalance code, then a lock code across a few weeks, it's usually the main control board sending false signals as it ages, not three separate broken parts. Board replacement runs $580 to $880, and on a mid-tier washer that age it's a repair-versus-replace call.
