Washer Error Codes Repair
Southern California
Error code service
The error code is a hint, not a diagnosis. Same code can mean three things; we test before we quote.
When a washer flashes an error code in a Southern California home, our techs at Same Day Appliance Repair trace it to a handful of patterns: a drain fault (Samsung 5C, LG OE, Whirlpool F9E1, Bosch E18, drain pump $380 to $540), a water-supply fault (Samsung 4C, LG IE, Whirlpool F8E1, inlet valve $260 to $380), and a door-lock fault (LG LE, Whirlpool F5E2, door interlock $260 to $440). We decode the specific code by brand first because the same symptom comes from different parts depending on what the board logged. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573, EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410), BBB Accredited.
A washer showing an error code usually points to a drain fault, a fill-valve or water-pressure issue, a door-lock failure, or a motor or bearing problem — but the exact meaning depends on the brand. Our techs at Same Day Appliance Repair decode the specific code by brand first (Whirlpool F21/F02, Samsung 4E/5E/UE, LG OE/LE/UE, Bosch E18, Speed Queen E-DR) because the same symptom can come from different parts depending on what the board logged, and the wrong fix wastes parts money.
The display flashes 4C, OE, F5E2, or E18, the cycle stops mid-wash, you Google the code, and the search results say six different things. Manufacturer error codes point to a fault category (water supply, drain, door lock, motor) but the code alone doesn't tell you which specific component in that category failed. Whirlpool's F8E1 ("water supply fault") could be a stuck inlet valve, a kinked supply hose, a clogged inlet screen, or a pressure switch reading wrong. We do the on-site verification before quoting parts.
Below are the code reference tables we use for the brands we service most often in SoCal. Samsung, LG, Whirlpool / Maytag / KitchenAid (shared F-code platform), Bosch, GE, Frigidaire / Electrolux, Miele, and Speed Queen.

Cross-links: Frigidaire · Electrolux.
Miele
Miele F-code system.
Miele uses an F-code system with sequential numbering (F-20, F-50, F-100). The premium architecture means error codes often require service mode reset (button-press sequence to clear) after the underlying fault is repaired. F-50 is motor fault, F-20 is water inlet, F-100 is drain. Service approach is similar to other brands but the parts catalog and authorized-service network are more selective; we have the service-mode reset procedures and the parts logistics. Cross-link: Miele washer repair.
Speed Queen
Speed Queen E-code system (premium 15-20 year tier).
Speed Queen is the 15 to 20 year service-life tier. Codes are deliberately simpler than Samsung or LG because the architecture is more durable and the parts catalog is stable across model years. When a Speed Queen throws a code, the diagnostic is faster and the parts logistics are predictable.
| Code | Meaning | Common cause |
|---|---|---|
| E-01 | Lid lock | Lid switch or interlock |
| E-LD | Lid open during cycle | Lid switch alignment or wear |
| E-FL | Fill fault | Inlet valve, hose, supply pressure |
| E-DR | Drain fault | Pump motor, hose, filter |
| E-OF | Overflow | Inlet valve stuck open or pressure switch |
| E-bA | Balance / unbalanced load | Suspension or load redistribution |
The premium-tier framing matters: a Speed Queen at year 12 with a single E-DR code is almost always a clean drain pump replacement. The same year 12 unit on a Samsung or LG mid-tier would be a control-board-going-bad replace conversation. Different equipment, different math.
DIY reset procedures
Try these before calling.
Drain pump filter clogs and inlet hose kinks together resolve a large share of "code on display" calls without a service visit. Power-cycle and door re-latch handle most transient sensor noise. Leak-detection and motor-lock codes never clear from customer-side resets — those need on-site repair.
- Power cycle. Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in. Clears transient sensor noise.
- Drain pump filter clear. Front-load only. Lower right or left front access door, twist counterclockwise, place pan, clear debris. Fixes a high percentage of drain codes (Samsung 5C, LG OE, Bosch E18, Whirlpool F9E1, Frigidaire E20).
- Door re-latch. Open and firmly close the door if "door open" code is showing without genuine cause.
- Inlet hose check. Behind the washer, both supply valves on, hoses not kinked. Resolves a large share of Samsung 4C, LG IE, Whirlpool F8E1 codes.
- Service mode reset (Miele). Brand-specific sequence; we handle on visit if customer-DIY doesn't apply.
Honest opinion
Multiple codes on a year 8+ unit means the control board is going.
When a year 8+ washer throws 2 or 3 different codes within 6 months (a drain code one week, an unbalance code the next, a door lock code the week after), the diagnostic isn't 3 separate components, it's the control board sending false fault signals as it ages. Year 8 to 12 typical timing on mid-tier brands. Replacement runs $580 to $880, but at that age it's a replace-vs-replace conversation; we do the math with you on-site honestly. Premium brands (Bosch, Miele, Speed Queen) push that timeline out 5+ years.

FAQ
Error code questions.
What does F21 mean on my Whirlpool washer?
F21 on a Whirlpool front-load (and the closely related Maytag / KitchenAid Duet platforms) is a drain fault — the washer didn't drain within the expected time window. Most common causes in order: clogged drain pump filter (behind the kickplate on Whirlpool family, technician access), kinked or clogged drain hose at the standpipe, or a failed drain pump motor. Roughly 50 percent of F21 calls resolve at filter or hose without pump replacement. If the pump itself failed, replacement runs $380 to $540 with labor. Note: on newer Whirlpool 8-series the same fault may show as F9E1 instead of F21 — same underlying meaning, different firmware label. $89 residential diagnostic, applied toward repair.
How do I reset washer error codes?
Reset method depends on brand. Universal first step: unplug for 30 seconds (or kill the breaker for 1 minute), then restore power and run a quick rinse-and-spin to see if the code returns. Brand-specific: Samsung — press and hold Start for 8 seconds; LG — press Power to cancel and unplug for 1 minute; Whirlpool/Maytag/KitchenAid — open lid/door, press Cancel/Drain twice; Bosch 300/500/800 — press Start for 3 to 5 seconds. Codes that return within 1 to 2 cycles after reset mean real hardware fault. Codes that clear and stay clear for 30+ days are transient and don't need a service call. Leak-detection codes (Samsung LE, LG AE, motor-lock LE) never clear from customer reset — those require on-site repair plus tech-mode reset.
What does Samsung 4C / 4E mean?
Water supply fault. The washer isn't sensing water entering the drum at the rate or volume it expects. Check inlet hoses (kinked or shut off at the supply valve), check screens at the inlet valve for sediment, then test the inlet valve itself. Roughly 60 percent resolve at hose or screen, 40 percent at the valve. Inlet valve replacement runs $260 to $380 if hardware-side. The 4C and 4E codes are the same fault on different Samsung firmware generations.
LG OE — drain or pump?
Drain fault, and on LG 50 percent of OE codes resolve at the drain pump filter (lower-left front access door, customer-cleanable). Pump motor failure is the next most common, $380 to $540 replacement. Drain hose kink or clog third. We always check the filter first because it's free or near-free, then escalate.
Whirlpool F5E2 vs Maytag F5E2 — same fault?
Yes. Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid share the same control architecture across the front-load Duet platform and many top-load HE platforms. F5E2 is door lock fault on all three. Door interlock assembly $260 to $440 typical replacement. Same diagnostic, same part-number families, same labor.
Bosch E18 — DIY accessible?
Yes. E18 on Bosch 300/500/800 series is drain pump fault. The pump filter is at the front lower right behind a small flip-down door, customer-accessible. Place a shallow pan, twist the cap counterclockwise, clear debris, reinstall. Resolves a high percentage of E18 calls without a service visit. If the code returns after a clean filter, the pump motor itself is the next stop, $380 to $540.
What's the deal with KitchenAid F2E2 specifically?
User Interface (UI) board failure. F2E2 on KitchenAid washers (and the closely related Whirlpool / Maytag platforms) is most commonly the UI board on model years 2014 to 2019. The board fails in a way that locks the cycle selector at one position or makes the touchpad unresponsive. Replacement runs $440 to $720 for the part plus install. We've seen enough of these to recognize the pattern, and we check whether the model is in the affected year range before quoting.
Multiple error codes within a month — what's happening?
Usually the main control board going. When a year 8+ unit throws 2 or 3 different codes within 6 months (a drain code one week, an unbalance code the next, a door lock code the week after), the diagnostic isn't 3 separate components, it's the control board sending false fault signals. Year 8 to 12 typical timing. Replacement $580 to $880, but at that age it's a replace-vs-replace conversation; we do the math with you.
Code clears on reset but returns. Chase it or accept?
Depends. Sensor noise on a transient (water-pressure spike, momentary mechanical jam) can throw a one-time code that clears on reset and never returns. That's fine. A code that returns within 1 to 2 cycles every time, regardless of reset, means real hardware fault. Service visit. We don't recommend chasing intermittent codes that haven't returned in 30 days.
Speed Queen E-codes are unfamiliar to me. Standard service?
Yes. Speed Queen uses E-01, E-LD, E-FL, E-DR, E-OF, E-bA codes (lid lock, fill, drain, overflow, balance) on its premium residential and commercial-grade lineup. Speed Queen is the 15 to 20 year service-life tier; codes are deliberately simpler than Samsung or LG because the architecture is more durable and parts catalogs are stable. Service approach is the same: lookup, on-site verify, targeted part replacement, fewer surprises than aged Samsung or LG units.
My Samsung shows UE (or LG shows UE) on every load, even small balanced ones. What's failing?
A UE code that fires on every load, including small balanced ones, points past simple load redistribution to worn suspension rods or shock absorbers, or a failing unbalance sensor. Our techs at Same Day Appliance Repair check the suspension and unbalance sensor when the code persists across balanced loads, rather than telling you to just rebalance the laundry. Suspension or shock absorber replacement runs $440 to $640. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair.
My Whirlpool throws F2E1 and a button on the panel seems stuck. Is that the keypad?
Yes. F2E1 on the Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid platform is a stuck button on the user interface, and it usually traces to a failed membrane keypad rather than the full control board. Our techs at Same Day Appliance Repair verify it's the keypad and not the UI board behind it (which would show as F2E2) before quoting, so you're not paying for a board you don't need. Membrane keypad replacement runs $200 to $360. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair.
