About this service

Bosch compact 24" washers, the LA condo laundry standard.

Bosch dominates the compact 24" washer category across our service area. In condos, townhouses, apartments, and older homes without dedicated laundry rooms, Wilshire Corridor and Westside LA, Newport Beach and Long Beach high-rises, Marina del Rey and downtown Long Beach waterfront, Irvine apartments, plus the IE attached-home corridors of Rancho Cucamonga and Murrieta, the 24" footprint is often the only option that fits the closet, alcove, or under-counter space available. Bosch has the largest US market share in this category, competing mainly with Miele (premium tier) and LG (lower tier). Most owners across our service area chose Bosch specifically for the balance of price and build quality, Miele costs roughly 2x at purchase, LG is cheaper but builds last fewer years.

A significant LA advantage: Bosch compact washers run on standard 120V circuits rather than the 240V dryer-type circuit that full-size US washers sometimes need. For a retrofit into a condo closet or an older single-family house without 240V available, this changes the installation economics, no electrician needed, no circuit addition, just plug in and plumb in. Service retains this advantage: we don't need to coordinate with an electrician for most Bosch washer work.

Most of our Bosch washer calls are 4-to-12-year-old 300 or 500 Series units (some 800 Series) past the 1-year base warranty. Common service items: door lock wear (E02/E03), drain pump debris (E13/E18), shock absorber aging, and on brushed-motor models (300/500 Series) motor carbon brush replacement around year 6-8. We carry these parts on every truck.

Models we service

Bosch washer model families

800 Series (Flagship Compact)

WAW285H2UC Β· WAW285B1UC Β· WAW285H1UC Β· WGA12400UC

Top-tier Bosch compact 24" washer. EcoSilence direct-drive motor (no carbon brushes, no F21 brush-wear failures), 1400-1600 RPM max spin, AntiVibration sides, Home Connect WiFi, all cycle options including Allergen, Sanitize, Steam (on select models). Most common current-gen Bosch washer in luxury condos across our service area 2020+.

500 Series (Mid-Tier)

WAT28401UC Β· WAT28402UC Β· WAT28400UC Β· WAT28400AT

Mid-tier compact washer. Brushed motor (F21 carbon-brush failures at year 6-8 typical), 1400 RPM max spin, Allergen and Sanitize cycles, Home Connect on 2020+ models. Service-economics favorable, brushed motor is cheaper to rebuild than replace, $165-$245 brush replacement extends motor life through year 12-15.

300 Series (Entry)

WAT28400UC (earlier) Β· Axxis WFMC3301UC Β· WFMC2201UC

Entry-tier compact washer. Basic wash programs, 1200-1400 RPM spin, electronic controls without WiFi, brushed motor. Common in rental properties and budget-conscious builds. Same core service architecture as 500 Series, same door lock, same drain pump, same shock absorber design, so service costs are competitive.

Axxis Legacy (Pre-2015)

WFMC3301UC Β· WFMC2201UC Β· WFMC6401UC Β· WFMC4301UC

Bosch Axxis line, pre-2015 compact 24" washers. Many still in service in Southern California condos built 2008-2014 (Wilshire Corridor, Newport Beach, Long Beach, Irvine). Parts availability still good for common failures: door lock, drain pump, shock absorbers, motor brushes. 15+ year old Axxis units approaching repair-vs-replace decision point, we give honest assessment based on cumulative repair cost vs replacement.

Stacked / Washer-Dryer Pairs

WAW + WTW/WTG stack Β· Axxis stack kit configurations

Most LA Bosch washers are installed stacked with matching Bosch dryer above using the stacking kit. Service on stacked units requires careful procedure, dryer must be unstacked for some major washer repairs (drum bearing, tub seal). We bring stack-kit tooling and a second technician when needed for stacked-unit service.

24" vs 27", We Don't Service 27"

Bosch does not make 27" washers for US market

Bosch's US washer line is exclusively 24" compact. If you have a 27" or larger Bosch-badged washer (rare), it's likely a European-spec import that shipped before the US market transitioned. We don't stock parts for European-spec units and typically cannot service them. For 27" US-market washers in a compact footprint, Miele is the primary option, see our Miele washer page.

Model number prefix key: WAT = 300/500 Series standard. WAW = 800 Series premium. WAU = select newer models. WFMC = Axxis legacy line (pre-2015). WGA = latest generation 800 Series. Second group (e.g. 28401) identifies feature package and year.

Bosch washer E-code decoder

Common Bosch washer error codes

CodeMeaning & diagnostic
E02Door failed to unlock at end of cycle. Door lock assembly degraded, test resistance 159-211 ohms. If outside range, replacement $195-$285.
E03Door failed to lock at start of cycle. Check door alignment with frame (manual adjustment may fix). If lock coil fails electrical test, $195-$285 replacement.
E13Drain pump timeout OR door lock fault after drain (dual meaning, confusing). Clean pump filter first (free). If filter clean but E13 persists, test lock resistance.
E16 / F34Door lock mechanism fault, won't receive "closed" signal. Inspect lock wiring harness for damage/corrosion. Lock replacement $195-$285.
E18Drain pipe blocked or drain hose installed too high (must be max 39"/1m above floor). Check installation first (free fix), then drain pump $165-$245.
E23Water detected in base pan, leak. Shut water off. Identify leak source (door gasket, pump seal, inlet valve, bellows). Repair leak BEFORE resetting sensor.
F21Motor carbon brushes worn (300/500 Series only, 800 Series EcoSilence has no brushes). Replacement $165-$245, extends motor life through year 12-15.
F22 / F23Motor tachometer or speed sensor fault. Often resolves on power reset; if persistent, control board-related, $385-$580.
F43Motor speed too low during spin, could be brushes (F21 family), motor coupling, or load imbalance. Diagnose with load removed.
Unbalanced load warningNot a code per se, washer attempts redistribution, spin runs reduced. Free fix: redistribute load, ensure single heavy items (bathmats, comforters) aren't one-sided.

Reset procedure: unplug for minimum 1 minute to fully discharge control board, plug back in. Clears transient codes and glitch memory. If code persists after reset, it's a real hardware fault requiring service.

Common failures

The nine things that break on a Bosch washer

1. Door lock failure, E02 / E03 (#1 call)

Single most common Bosch washer call. Electronically-actuated lock with internal microswitches; the lock physically engages, then sends confirmation signal to control board before water fill or drum movement is allowed. When lock wears, it either fails to engage (E03 at cycle start) or fails to disengage (E02 at cycle end, clothes trapped inside). Test resistance 159-211 ohms across coil terminals. Outside range = replace. $195-$285 door lock assembly, 45-min job. Emergency release tab near drain pump filter panel, use to retrieve trapped clothes if lock failed closed.

2. Drain pump clogged, E13 / E18

Drain pump filter access is at bottom-front of the washer behind a small panel. Filter catches coins, hairpins, buttons, fabric fragments, and (across SoCal's hard-water districts, especially the IE) mineral sediment. Monthly cleaning prevents most drainage errors. 70% of E13/E18 calls resolve with filter cleaning alone ($85 flat preventive service, or DIY with towel nearby, water drains when filter is removed). If pump tests good but drainage still slow, inspect drain hose for kinks and verify it's not installed higher than 39"/1m above floor per Bosch spec (hose too high = E18 by design).

3. Violent shaking during spin, shock absorbers

4-piece shock absorber set dampens drum oscillation during spin. After 8-10 years, absorbers lose dampening capacity and drum oscillates harder than the suspension can contain. Symptoms: walk-out shake at 800+ RPM, loud knock at spin start/end, unit "walking" across floor. We replace as complete 4-piece set ($385-$540) rather than individual, mixing worn and new creates diagonal imbalance that accelerates wear on the new ones. Check shipping bolts first before ordering parts, if washer was recently moved and shipping bolts left in, symptoms mimic shock failure exactly (free fix).

4. Won't start, door appears closed, latch alignment

Door physically closes but control board doesn't receive "closed" signal. Two causes: (1) latch pin misaligned with lock receiver, manual adjustment with door hinge mounting screws, free fix; (2) lock switch failed electrically, $195-$285 replacement. On 2020+ Home Connect models, check app, sometimes remote-disable is accidentally enabled. Firmware update resolves some intermittent won't-start codes on 2021-2022 units ($85 flat when firmware-only).

5. Water leaking from front during wash

Door gasket (bellows) damage is the most common cause. Bellows is the rubber seal between the door and drum, catches debris, mold, and occasionally tears where coins or sharp objects snag during tumble. Inspect for visible tears, cuts, or mold accumulation. Replacement $245-$385, 75-minute job requiring removal of the front panel and front counterweight. Alternative causes: water inlet valve slow drip ($165-$245) or drain hose cracked near tub connection ($125-$185).

6. F21 motor brushes worn, 300/500 Series

Brushed motors (300/500 Series) use carbon brushes to transfer current to the motor rotor. Brushes wear as normal operation, around year 6-8 on LA compact washers, earlier on heavy-use units. Symptoms: sparking visible near motor (through access panel), motor struggles to reach spin speed, F21 code, sometimes burning smell. Replacement $165-$245, 60-min job accessing motor from underneath. 800 Series EcoSilence direct-drive motors have no brushes, F21 will never appear on 800 Series. Brush replacement extends motor life through year 12-15, economical repair vs $585-$785 full motor replacement.

7. Water won't fill or fills slowly

Three causes in diagnostic order. (1) Water inlet mesh filters clogged at the valve connections, clean every 12 months per Bosch spec, free fix. (2) Water inlet valve solenoid failed ($165-$245 replacement), valve tests open or shorted, won't energize. (3) Water-level pressure switch fault, washer doesn't detect water reaching correct level, sometimes overfills or underfills, $125-$185 replacement. LA water pressure is generally adequate (50-80 PSI) so pressure-related issues are rare.

8. Loud noise during wash (not spin)

Drum bearing wear. Common on 10+ year old units regardless of series. Bearings support drum rotation; when worn, produce growling or grinding noise during wash, getting louder over time. Bearing set replacement $485-$685, 3-4 hour job requiring drum removal and tub disassembly. This is the most invasive Bosch washer repair, on 12+ year units we discuss repair-vs-replace economics honestly (bearing replacement is ~$500, new Bosch 500 Series washer is $1,200-$1,500). Replacement often makes more sense if multiple other components are aging.

9. Door gasket mold / musty smell

Not a mechanical failure but a common LA maintenance item. Closed-door humid environment + LA coastal humidity creates ideal mold conditions in the bellows fold. Prevention: wipe bellows dry after each wash, leave door open when not in use, run monthly hot-water maintenance cycle with Bosch Washer Cleaner ($12 DIY). If mold has penetrated the rubber, cleaning doesn't fully remove it and bellows replacement $245-$385 is the only permanent fix. On 5+ year units with visible mold, we recommend replacement as part of any other bellows-area service to avoid second visit.

Southern California context

Compact washer maintenance across SoCal condos and older homes

Compact washer installations across our service area have specific maintenance considerations. Closet installations have limited ventilation, humidity buildup accelerates bellows mold and inside-panel corrosion. We recommend leaving the door open between loads (5+ minute air-dry) and running a hot-water maintenance cycle monthly on any Bosch washer installed in a closet or alcove.

Southern California hard water (200-350 ppm in LA / OC / Ventura, 300-450+ ppm in IE) affects Bosch washers similarly to dishwashers, scale buildup on the heating element reduces efficiency and accelerates failure. We recommend descaling with Bosch Washer Cleaner every 6 months across LA / OC / Ventura (every 4 months in IE) vs every 12 months in softer-water markets. Ignored descaling leads to heating element failure ($185-$265) at year 7-9 (year 5-6 in IE) instead of year 12+ in softer markets.

For stacked installations (Bosch washer + Bosch dryer with stacking kit), the washer base is typically at or below floor level in some closet installations. Confirm drain pump filter access is physically reachable before buying a stacked setup, some installs make the drain filter difficult to access for monthly cleaning, which compromises the washer's service economics significantly. We can evaluate access during pre-purchase site visits (free consultation for owners considering Bosch compact laundry).
