About this service
The Bosch dishwasher is arguably the best residential dishwasher in North America.
If Bosch was known for just one appliance category, it would be dishwashers. Consistently top-rated by Consumer Reports and Reviewed. Uniformly quieter than competitors at every price tier, 44 dB on 800 Series versus 50+ dB for most competitors in the same range. CrystalDry zeolite drying (800 Series and Benchmark) actually dries plastic containers properly, unlike almost every other dishwasher on the market. And the 485-point quality check process Bosch runs on every unit means the failure rate is genuinely lower than GE, Whirlpool, or KitchenAid at equivalent price points.
When Bosch dishwashers do need service, the engineering helps us work quickly. Error codes (E01 through E30) map to specific components with documented diagnostic paths. OEM part numbers are consistent across the 300/500/800 platforms, float switch 00611316 covers the vast majority of post-2005 Bosch dishwashers, circulation pump 00654575 covers most SHE/SHP/SHX models. Thermador dishwashers share the Bosch platform exactly, same parts, same diagnostic procedures, same service approach. We carry common Bosch/Thermador parts on every truck.
Most of our Bosch dishwasher calls are 3-to-8-year-old 300, 500, or 800 Series units past the 1-year base warranty, new construction from 2018-2022 across Brentwood, Santa Monica, Mid-Wilshire, West Hollywood, and Culver City on LA's Westside; Newport Beach, Irvine, and Tustin in OC; Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village in Ventura; Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario in San Bernardino; and Murrieta and Temecula in Riverside, all seeing first post-warranty service needs now. Factory-trained service at a lower labor rate than Bosch authorized dispatch.

Bosch E-code decoder
Complete Bosch dishwasher error code reference
Bosch dishwashers display error codes as E01 through E30 on models with digital displays, or as blinking-light patterns on 100 Series and some older units. Here's the decoder for all codes we see in the field, organized by system.
| Code | Meaning & diagnostic |
|---|---|
| E01 β E05 | Control board / power module fault. Technician required. $385-$580 board replacement. Most common on 8+ year units. |
| E06 | Aqua sensor fault. Turbidity/water-clarity sensor drifted. $95-$155 replacement. |
| E09 | Heating element burnout OR solder joint on heater relay (control board). Element $185-$265, board $385-$580 if relay side. |
| E12 | Limescale buildup warning. Southern California hard water accelerates this, particularly in IE districts (300-450 ppm). Descale the machine; error clears. Cycle still completes but performance drops. Free DIY fix. |
| E15 | Anti-flood float switch triggered, water in base pan. Shut water off. Find and repair leak source (inlet valve, gasket, pump seal, Aquastop hose). Float switch part 00611316 (300/500/800) or 12019637 (Benchmark). $185-$265 float + leak repair. |
| E16 / E17 / E18 | Water fill / flow problem, level too low, supply valve closed, inlet hose kinked, or filling system fault. Check supply first (free), then inlet valve $165-$245. |
| E19 | Detergent dispenser solenoid fault. Dispenser $125-$195. |
| E20 / E21 | Heating / heat-pump internal faults (model-dependent). Component specific, we diagnose on site. |
| E22 | Fine filter blocked, residual water in sump. Clean filter (bottom of cavity under spray arm). 80% resolve free. Recurring E22 = filter damaged ($45-$85). |
| E23 / E24 | Drainage at intermediate stage, drain hose kinked, drain pump cover loose, garbage disposal plug not removed. Free fixes or $245-$385 pump. |
| E25 | Drain pump blockage at nozzle/impeller. Debris (glass shards, plastic) jammed pump. Remove and clean impeller, or pump replacement $245-$385. |
| E26 | Diverter motor fault. Motor controls water distribution between upper and lower spray arms. Replacement $145-$215. |
| E27 | Low voltage, dishwasher won't run (safety cutoff). Check circuit breaker, voltage at outlet (should be 120V Β±5%). Not typically a dishwasher part issue. |
| E28 | Aqua sensor malfunction (same family as E06). $95-$155 replacement. |
| E29 | Low mains voltage, typically electrical-supply issue, not dishwasher internal. |
| E30 | Voltage too high (>240V). Electrical diagnosis needed; not typically a Bosch part issue. |
For 100 Series and older units without digital display: errors show as blinking-light patterns. Water-inlet light flashing = E16/E17/E18 family. Drain-related light = E22/E24/E25. Door light + start light = E15. We carry the code reference chart on every call, so you don't need to decode the patterns yourself.
Reset procedure: hold Start button for 3-5 seconds (model-dependent). If code doesn't clear, turn off at breaker for 30 seconds, turn back on. Persistent codes after reset indicate a real hardware issue requiring service.
Common failures
The ten things that break on a Bosch dishwasher
1. E15, water in base pan, anti-flood triggered
Most serious Bosch dishwasher call. Safety system shut the machine down to prevent water damage. Shut off water supply at the valve first. Six possible leak sources in diagnostic order: (1) inlet valve slow drip (sealer worn, allows seep when idle, $165-$245); (2) Aquastop supply hose internal leak (dual-line hose with integrated flood sensor, looks fine externally, leaks inside jacket, $145-$215); (3) door gasket worn or misaligned ($195-$285); (4) circulation pump seal failing ($285-$385 pump); (5) spray arm connection loose (free fix); (6) sump cracked (rare, $385+ replacement). After leak repair: drain the base pan, reset float switch. Without fixing the leak, E15 returns within days.
2. E22 / E24 / E25, drainage problems
Start with free fixes: clean the fine filter at the bottom of the tub (remove spray arm, lift filter combination, rinse under warm water, reinstall). Fixes 80% of E22 and 50% of E24 codes. Then check drain hose behind the dishwasher for kinks. Verify garbage disposal plug was removed if drain is plumbed through disposal (common missed step on new installs). Finally inspect drain pump impeller for debris, glass shards, broken plastic, and small utensils jam impellers. Pump replacement $245-$385 if impeller is damaged. Regular filter cleaning (monthly, or every 2 weeks for heavy use) prevents most E22/E24 calls.
3. Dishes coming out wet, 800 Series CrystalDry issue
CrystalDry zeolite canister saturated. Zeolite mineral absorbs moisture and releases heat during dry cycle; over 4-6 years, the canister accumulates scale and detergent residue that reduces heat-release capacity. Symptoms: plastics especially not drying, heavier water residue on all dishes, rinse aid dispenser full but not helping. Canister replacement $285-$385. On older 800 Series units (pre-2020), verify it's actually the zeolite before ordering, heating element failure (E09 code) causes similar symptoms and is $185-$265.
4. Dishwasher won't start, no response to button press
Five possibilities in order: (1) door not fully latched, push firmly until click; (2) Child Lock activated, hold button sequence per manual (model-specific); (3) Delay Start programmed, cancel via button sequence; (4) circuit breaker tripped (free reset); (5) door latch assembly failed ($145-$215 replacement). On 2020+ units with Home Connect, check the app, sometimes the unit is operating in remote-disabled mode if the app was recently configured. Firmware update resolves 15% of "won't start" complaints on 2021-2022 units without any parts.
5. Loud grinding or buzzing during wash cycle
Circulation pump or drain pump. Diagnostic: identify which sound corresponds to which phase. If noise during wash (water circulating through spray arms), it's the circulation pump ($285-$385). If noise during drain phase (water leaving dishwasher), it's the drain pump ($185-$265). On 10+ year old 500/800 Series, we recommend replacing both pumps as a preventive bundle ($440-$620) since they age similarly and a new pump next to a marginal pump causes repeat service within 12-18 months.
6. E09, oven not heating, rinse aid water spots
Heating element burnout. Tests 25-35 ohms good. When the element fails, cold water washes don't sanitize and rinse aid doesn't sheet off properly (spots on glassware). Element replacement $185-$265, 60-minute job. Alternative cause on 800 Series: heater relay solder joint on main control board, rare, but if element tests good, inspect the board for burn marks at the heater relay. Control board replacement $385-$580.
7. Door won't close flush or gasket leaking
Door gasket wear or hinge drift. Gasket replacement $195-$285, 45-minute job. If hinge drift is the cause (door sagging, not closing parallel to frame), hinge realignment or replacement $145-$245 per hinge. On Bosch panel-ready SHV models, inspect the custom panel attachment, a heavy panel drags the door over time, accelerating hinge wear. We re-torque panel attachment hardware at the same service visit.
8. Spray arms not rotating or weak spray
Three causes: (1) spray arm jets clogged with hard-water scale (Southern California tap water runs 200-350 ppm in LA / OC / Ventura, 300-450+ ppm in the Inland Empire, both accelerate scale), soak arm in vinegar overnight, clean ports with toothpick, free fix; (2) spray arm bearing worn, replacement $85-$165 per arm; (3) circulation pump weakening, if multiple arms weak and cleaning didn't help, pump $285-$385. We inspect all three before ordering parts.
9. E26 diverter motor fault
Diverter motor controls which rack's spray arms receive water, upper, lower, or both. When motor fails, one rack may get zero water (cleaning fails for that rack) or both racks constantly spray (cycle uses more water and takes longer). Replacement $145-$215, 60-minute job. Usually fails around year 7-10 on heavy-use units.
10. Intermittent errors on 2021-2022 units, firmware issue
Known issue on 2021-2022 500/800 Series with Home Connect: firmware had intermittent handling bugs that Bosch addressed via over-the-air updates. Symptoms: random error codes that clear on reset then reappear days later, incomplete cycles, display freezing. First diagnostic step: check firmware version in Home Connect app, run update if available. About 15% of "intermittent error" calls on these units resolve via firmware without any parts. $85 flat for firmware service when that's all that's needed.
Southern California context
Southern California hard water and Bosch dishwasher maintenance
SoCal tap water is hard across all five counties we serve, typically 200-350 ppm calcium and magnesium in LA Westside, 250-400 ppm across most of OC, and 300-450+ ppm in the Inland Empire (Rancho Cucamonga, Temecula, Riverside) where Colorado River and groundwater blends drive hardness substantially higher. All of that is well above what European-designed dishwashers like Bosch were originally calibrated for. The practical impact: scale buildup happens faster on Bosch dishwashers across our service area than in softer-water markets, and service frequency reflects that, and IE owners see scale fastest of all.
Specific scale-driven service items: E12 limescale warning appears at year 4-7 in LA / OC / Ventura (year 3-5 in the IE) instead of year 8-10 in softer markets (descaling with Bosch Dishwasher Cleaner clears the code, $15 DIY); spray arm nozzle scale buildup requires vinegar soak every 6 months to maintain spray pressure (every 4 months in IE districts); CrystalDry zeolite canister on 800/Benchmark saturates at year 4-6 across SoCal vs year 6-8 elsewhere, and as early as year 3 in Inland Empire ($285-$385 replacement); heating element scale accumulation reduces efficiency and accelerates failure, SoCal 800 Series units often need heating element replacement at year 7-9 vs year 10-12 elsewhere.
The water-softener setting matters but is often overlooked. Bosch dishwashers include a water softener (salt reservoir on some models; calibration setting on others). Ship from factory at a European-default setting that undertreats Southern California water and badly undertreats Inland Empire water. Our service visit includes verifying the softener setting matches local water hardness, a 2-minute adjustment that extends component life meaningfully. On units with salt reservoirs (Benchmark, some 800 Series), we verify salt level and refill frequency is adequate for SoCal conditions; IE owners typically need to refill twice as often as LA owners.

Warranty context
Bosch dishwasher warranty and when to call us
Bosch dishwasher base warranty is 1 year on all parts and labor. Benchmark and select 800 Series have additional coverage: 2 years on stainless tub, 5 years on the pump and motor, lifetime on the racks (stainless steel only). During the first year for any issue, call Bosch at 1-800-944-2904 for authorized dispatch at no parts cost.
Post-warranty is where we operate. Most of our Bosch dishwasher calls are 3-to-8-year-old units past the base coverage. Same factory training as Bosch authorized, faster response, lower labor rate. For in-warranty issues, call Bosch first. For component failures that might fall under extended pump/motor coverage on 800/Benchmark (years 2-5), we verify warranty applicability and process claims when applicable, can save $285-$385 on pump replacements that should be part-free under extended coverage.

Bosch dishwasher repair, common questions
E15 on my Bosch, what do I do?
Anti-flood float switch triggered. Shut water supply off. Tilt Fix (tilt backward to drain pan) is not a repair, real leak still there. Find/repair leak source: inlet valve, Aquastop hose, gasket, pump seal. Float switch 00611316 (300/500/800) or 12019637 (Benchmark), $185-$265 + leak repair.
E22 vs E24 vs E25
All drainage. E22 = fine filter blocked (clean filter, 80% free). E24 = drain hose/pump cover/garbage disposal plug. E25 = drain pump impeller blockage (glass shards typical). Monthly filter cleaning prevents most.
800 Series CrystalDry not drying
Zeolite canister saturated at year 4-6 on LA hard water. Replacement $285-$385. If not CrystalDry issue: heating element (E09, $185-$265) or rinse aid empty (free).
Home Connect firmware update, can it fix my issue?
Sometimes. 2020+ 500/800/Benchmark Series. 15% of intermittent errors on 2021-2022 units resolve via firmware without parts. $85 flat firmware service.
Is my Bosch dishwasher same as Thermador?
Yes, Thermador dishwashers are built on Bosch platform. Float switch 00611316 and circulation pump 00654575 identical. Service procedures identical. Only trim and branding differ.
How much does Bosch dishwasher repair cost?
Diagnostic $89, waived with repair. Common: circulation pump $285-$385, drain pump $185-$265, heating element $185-$265, float switch $185-$265, CrystalDry canister $285-$385, control board $385-$580. Full pricing above.
My 100 Series has no display, how do I read errors?
Blinking-light patterns map to E-codes. Water-inlet flashing = E16/E17/E18. Drain light = E22/E24/E25. Door + start = E15. We carry code chart on every call, you don't need to decode.
