About this service

Viking invented the residential pro range. We keep them running for decades.

The Viking Professional range is the brand's signature product, commercial-style sealed burners, cast-iron grates, the red control knob that's been the visual trademark since 1987. In LA, Viking ranges anchor kitchens from 30-inch Wilshire condos to 60-inch Malibu estates with double ovens and a built-in griddle. Most LA Viking ranges we service are 5-to-20 years old, units installed during the 2005-2020 luxury kitchen wave that are now past warranty but have another decade or more of service life with component-level attention.

Viking range service requires specific knowledge that general repair techs often lack. The spark module part VKPA020047, the single component that controls ignition across all burners, is the root cause of most "clicking but won't light" calls and is often mis-diagnosed. The F02 RTD temperature probe fault is the most common oven-temperature complaint and has a specific diagnostic sequence that a factory-trained tech handles in one visit. Viking dual-fuel vs all-gas architecture differences matter, VDR prefix (dual-fuel) has an electric oven with bake element, broil element, and convection fan, while VGR prefix (all-gas) uses a glow-bar oven igniter. We carry both schematics and common parts for both architectures on the truck.

Most of our Viking range calls come from Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Hidden Hills, Calabasas, and the Pasadena foothills on LA's Westside; Newport Coast, Coto de Caza, Newport Beach, and Shady Canyon in Orange County; Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks in Ventura; and Rancho Cucamonga and Temecula wine-country estate kitchens in the Inland Empire. Same factory training as Viking Certified Service, faster response, lower labor rate than a post-warranty Viking Certified dispatch.

Platforms and models

Viking range platforms we service

Professional 7 Series Dual-Fuel (Current Flagship)

VDR7486GSS (48") · VDR7488BSS · VDR7366BSS (36") · VDR74824BSS (48" 4-burner + griddle)

Current flagship dual-fuel, gas burners (up to 25,000 BTU), electric oven with VariSimmer 250°F-500°F convection, ProFlow convection system, Rapid Ready preheat. VDR7486 is the most common flagship configuration in LA. Electric oven side uses bake element ($225-$325), convection fan ($285-$420), RTD probe ($165-$245).

Professional 7 Series All-Gas

VGR7488BSS (48") · VGR5488BSS · VGR74828BSS · VGR73626BSS (36") · VGR5366

All-gas 7 Series, same sealed burners and rangetop architecture as dual-fuel, but gas oven with glow-bar oven igniter ($245-$340) and gas safety valve. Oven temperature is less precise than dual-fuel (wider swing range) but the all-gas platform has fewer electrical parts to fail over the long term.

Professional 5 Series

VGRC5486GSS (48" gas) · VDRC5486GSS (dual-fuel) · VGRC5364 (36") · VDRC5486

Mid-tier Professional, same sealed-burner commercial heritage, reduced feature set compared to 7 Series. 2019-2022 5 Series units are seeing increased EOC (Electronic Oven Control) board failures, the oven's main computer is the most common post-warranty replacement on this generation. 2023+ units have revised control hardware.

Tuxedo Collection

VGR3646B(K) · VDR3646B(K) · VTU3646B (Tuxedo-specific trim)

Matte-black aesthetic variant of Professional 7 and 5 Series. Same underlying platform as standard stainless versions, same spark module VKPA020047, same RTD probe, same oven elements, but black knobs and black trim instead of stainless + red. Service parts are identical to stainless equivalents except for visible trim pieces.

Tuscany (Legacy, Pre-2015)

VITU4865 · VITU5305 · VITU5605 · VITSC4806 (Tuscany range-top)

Discontinued premium line produced 2010-2015, Italian-influenced design language, color-accent options. Still found in Westside LA, Newport Beach, Westlake Village, and Rancho Cucamonga kitchens from that era. Parts availability is reduced, Viking no longer stocks all components, but our supplier network has most common items. We give honest repair-vs-replace assessments on Tuscany units that need major component work.

Pre-Professional Legacy (DSC)

DSC365-4GBK (36" dual-fuel) · DSC305 · DSC307 · DSC485-6GQ · DSC485-4GAFTER

Pre-Professional Viking (Dynamic Cooking Systems platform, 1995-2008). 20-year-old DSC units still running in Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, Hidden Hills, and Temecula wine-country kitchens as original installs. We have the Viking service manual for DSC series and source common parts. Component-level repair pencils out against replacement through year 22-25 for these.

Tuscany and DSC series parts availability is narrower than current production. We verify part availability before dispatch on these legacy models and give honest assessments if a critical component is no longer sourceable.

Common failures

The ten things that break on a Viking range

1. Burner clicks but won't light, wet, greasy, or spark module failed

Most common Viking call. Diagnostic order: (1) burner wet from recent cleaning, wipe and dry 2-4 hours, free; (2) grease in burner port, clean with pin; (3) burner cap misaligned (Viking caps are finicky, reseat so notch aligns with ignition electrode); (4) spark module VKPA020047 failed, controls all burners, when it fails individual burners lose spark while others keep working. Swap test: rotate a known-good knob and watch if all burners fire including the failing one, if yes, module is fine, issue is at the specific knob/switch. Module $285-$425, individual igniter $185-$275.

2. F02 RTD probe error on oven

Oven temperature sensor drifted or opened. Symptoms: temperature reads wrong, oven overshoots or undershoots 25-75°F, self-clean may abort. Diagnostic: test RTD resistance at room temperature (should read ~1080-1100 ohms at 77°F), inspect probe connector at rear of oven cavity, verify wire harness to EOC intact. Probe $165-$245, 45-minute job. On pre-2015 Viking Professionals, 20% of F02 codes resolve at the connector (clean and retest) before probe replacement is needed.

3. Oven running hot, temperature inaccurate on dual-fuel

Viking 7 Series dual-fuel (VDR7486, VDR7488) temperature problems are almost always electrical. Four causes in order: RTD probe drift (F02 above), bake element partially shorted ($225-$325), convection fan stalled causing hot spots, door gasket degraded allowing heat loss. 25-75°F overshoot or wide swings → thermostat or RTD. Localized hot spots → convection fan. Gradual undershoot → gasket or element. We diagnose which from the actual symptom pattern.

4. EOC (Electronic Oven Control) failure, 2019-2022 5 Series

Common on Professional 5 Series VGRC5486GSS and VDRC series from 2019-2022 production. Symptoms: temp display blank or corrupted, self-clean fails to start, convection mode won't activate, oven runs continuously regardless of setpoint. EOC is the oven's main computer, replacement $640-$920, 90-minute job. Before ordering, we verify via service-mode diagnostics that EOC is the actual failure (not RTD or wiring mimicking EOC symptoms). 2023+ units have revised control hardware with fewer issues.

5. Convection fan stalled, uneven cooking, hot spots

Dual-fuel only (VDR prefix). Symptom is unmistakable: one rack burning while another undercooks, or significant temperature variation between back and front of cavity. Fan motor mount bearings wear out around year 10-14 on heavy-use units. Replacement $285-$420, 75-minute job. We inspect the fan blade assembly at the same time, bent blades from impact damage are a separate issue that can mimic motor failure.

6. Oven door gasket compromised, temperature drops, heat escapes

Door gasket degradation causes 25-50°F temperature loss and forces the oven to run longer and hotter to compensate. Symptoms: longer preheat times, meat cooking slower than before, thermostat cycling more frequently. Dollar-bill test: close door on a dollar, pull out at each corner and midpoint, minimal resistance = gasket failure in that section. Replacement $285-$420, 75-minute job. LA-specific factor: dry wildfire-season air in Thousand Oaks, Calabasas, and Hidden Hills accelerates gasket degradation, inland homes may need replacement at year 8-10 vs year 12-15 for coastal.

7. Bake element failed (dual-fuel), oven not heating, F24 or no error

Bake element open-circuit or visually damaged (broken, sagging, burnt spot). Element tests 15-25 ohms good. Replacement $225-$325, 45-minute job. We check the terminal block connections at the back of the oven cavity, burnt or corroded terminals are common on 10+ year units and cause repeated element failures if not addressed. Broil element ($245-$345) fails from the same causes and is diagnosed identically.

8. All-gas oven not heating, weak igniter, glow-bar failure

All-gas models (VGR prefix). The glow-bar oven igniter glows to signal the gas safety valve to open; if igniter resistance is too high, it glows but doesn't generate enough current to open the valve fully, resulting in slow heating, temperature undershoot, or complete no-heat. Igniter test: measure current draw during operation (should be 3.2-3.6 amps). Replacement $245-$340, 30-minute job. This is the most common all-gas Viking range failure.

9. Oven door hinge broken, door won't close flush or sags

Viking range doors are heavy (25-40 lb depending on size), and hinges wear over 10-15 years. Symptoms: door sags, won't close flush to the frame, hot air escapes, oven loses temperature. Single hinge replacement $185-$265; both hinges should be replaced together for balanced operation ($340-$485 for pair). Door glass damage from slammed closure is a related issue, inner pane $345-$520.

10. Gas valve assembly leaking or stuck, burner flame weak or inconsistent

Gas valve (behind the burner knob) controls gas flow. Failure modes: stuck partially-open, stuck partially-closed, or slow leak between valve and burner tube. Symptoms: flame too high or too low regardless of knob position, gas smell near unit, burner takes multiple tries to light properly. Valve assembly replacement $425-$640 per burner, 60-minute job. Gas smell is always an emergency, call immediately; shut off main gas valve at the meter while waiting.

Southern California context

Wildfire-season dry air and Viking gasket lifespan

Southern California has a distinctive weather pattern that affects oven gasket lifespan: Santa Ana wind events bring relative humidity below 15% for days at a time, particularly in inland foothill areas, Thousand Oaks, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Agoura Hills, the Pasadena foothills, and canyon homes in Bel Air and Beverly Hills on the LA side; Coto de Caza, North Tustin, and Anaheim Hills in OC; and most of the Inland Empire (Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma, Temecula wine-country, Murrieta), where dry summer heat and wildfire-season humidity drops are routine. Repeated exposure to single-digit humidity accelerates silicone and rubber gasket degradation. Oven gaskets that would last 12-15 years in coastal Santa Monica, Brentwood, or Newport Beach may need replacement at year 8-10 in these inland homes, and as early as year 7 in the hottest IE districts.

We flag this at service visits in affected districts: if your Viking is 7+ years old and lives in an inland fire-weather zone (anywhere from the Conejo Valley through the Inland Empire), we inspect the door gasket as part of any service call and recommend replacement proactively if compression is below spec. Waiting until the gasket visibly fails means 6-18 months of elevated energy use, oven temperature problems, and faster thermostat wear.

Coastal homes (Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Venice on the LA side; Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach in OC) don't see the same humidity swings, standard 12-15 year gasket life applies. The factor that matters more for coastal Viking ranges is salt air on exterior stainless trim, which we address with maintenance polishing rather than parts replacement.

Warranty context

Viking range warranty and when to call us

Viking residential range warranty is 3 years on all parts and labor, one of the more generous in the premium segment. During the warranty window, call Viking at 1-888-845-4641 for Viking Certified Service dispatch at no parts cost.

Post-warranty is where we operate. Most of our Viking range calls are 4-to-20-year-old units where the warranty has closed. Same factory training, faster response, lower labor rate than a post-warranty Viking Certified dispatch. For integrated Viking kitchens (range + fridge + grill + hood), we service all categories on a single dispatch, see our Viking hub for the full scope.

Viking range sealed-burner gas components are covered only under the base 3-year warranty; there's no extended sealed-system coverage equivalent to the 12-year refrigeration warranty. This matters for repair-vs-replace decisions on 15+ year old ranges where major gas valve or manifold work would be needed.

FAQ

Viking range repair, common questions

Burner clicks but won't light

Most common call. Wet/greasy (clean and dry 2-4 hrs), grease in port, cap misaligned, or spark module VKPA020047 failed. Swap test: if another knob fires all burners including the failing one, module is fine. Module $285-$425; individual igniter $185-$275.

F02 error

RTD temperature probe fault. Test resistance at 77°F (should be ~1080-1100 ohms), inspect connector, verify harness. Probe $165-$245. On pre-2015 Vikings, 20% resolve at connector cleanup before probe replacement.

Oven temperature inaccurate dual-fuel

Almost always electrical. RTD drift (F02), bake element short, convection fan stall, or door gasket. 25-75°F swing → thermostat/RTD. Hot spots → fan. Gradual undershoot → gasket/element. Symptom pattern identifies cause.

5 Series EOC failure

Common 2019-2022 VGRC5486GSS. Display blank, self-clean fails, convection won't activate. EOC $640-$920. We verify with service-mode diagnostics before ordering, RTD faults and wiring can mimic EOC. 2023+ units have revised hardware.

Dual-fuel vs all-gas, service difference?

Big. Dual-fuel (VDR) oven uses bake/broil element, convection fan, RTD, electrical. All-gas (VGR) uses glow-bar igniter and gas safety valve. Dual-fuel is more precise for baking; all-gas has fewer electrical parts to fail long-term.

Uneven cooking, one rack burning

Convection fan stalled (dual-fuel only). Motor bearings wear year 10-14 on heavy-use units. $285-$420 replacement. We inspect fan blade for impact damage at same visit.

How much does Viking range repair cost?
