Type I service
Why Type I (grease-laden) hood repair requires brand and code-aware diagnosis.
Type I commercial exhaust hoods handle grease-laden vapors from fryers, grills, ranges, and charbroilers. Distinct from Type II hoods (non-grease, dishwashers and non-grease ovens). Type I is regulated under NFPA 96 with specific cleaning frequency requirements, fire-suppression integration, and make-up air interlock. Most LA-area restaurants have Type I over the cooking line, which is where the bulk of our hood repair work happens.
We service Type I hoods across LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside counties. CaptiveAire is the dominant US market brand (independent, Raleigh NC) and the majority of our service volume. Accurex (Greenheck-owned, Schofield WI) and Halton (Finnish premium tier) are common in mid-to-upscale restaurant kitchens. Gaylord (Welbilt-owned) appears in larger commercial installations. Streivor rounds out the brand mix.
Common service items: exhaust fan motor (rooftop, year 8 to 12), belt drive systems (commercial fans typically belt-driven), make-up air interlock relay, fan housing corrosion (grease plus heat), damper actuators (fire damper safety-critical), capacitors on motor controls, filter housing damage, lighting upgrades (LED conversion replacing older fluorescent or incandescent).
$120 commercial diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573 plus EPA 608 Universal #1346255700410 plus CSLB C-20 HVAC. BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7. License verifiable.
Brand notes
What we see by brand on Type I hood service calls.
CaptiveAire. Independent, Raleigh NC. Dominant US market share, especially for new construction restaurants. Standard belt-drive exhaust fan architecture. Common service items: fan motor capacitors, belt plus pulley replacement, fire damper actuator service. Parts via CaptiveAire dealer network (3 to 5 day standard ship for less common items).
Accurex. Greenheck-owned (Schofield WI). Mid-to-upscale restaurant kitchens. Premium fan motor specs, robust damper actuator design. Common service: same fan motor and belt drive items as CaptiveAire; Accurex-specific control board on smart variants.
Halton. Finnish premium tier. Common in upscale hotels, fine dining, and chef-driven restaurants where the operator specified premium ventilation. Halton has UV grease-reduction technology on certain models that adds UV bulb replacement to the service mix.
Gaylord. Welbilt-owned. Larger commercial installations: hotels, hospitals, university dining. Heavy-duty construction with longer expected service life on cabinet but same fan motor and damper service items.
Streivor. Less common than the four above, but appears in mid-tier commercial kitchens. Make-up air interlock service is a common Streivor-specific call given their MUA-integrated designs.
Common scenarios
Top Type I hood repairs we see in our 5-county territory.
In rough order of frequency:
- Exhaust fan motor capacitor. Year 5 to 8 typical. Fan won't start or starts slowly then trips overload. Common van-stocked part. $200 to $360.
- Fan belt plus pulley replacement. Belt drive wear, year 4 to 7 on heavy-use fans. Commercial fans typically belt-driven (vs direct-drive on smaller residential range hoods). $260 to $440 with belt plus pulley.
- Make-up air interlock fault. Exhaust fan won't start because MUA isn't operational, or trips offline mid-service. Diagnose interlock chain to identify which component (MUA igniter, MUA VFD, relay, sensor wiring) is breaking the chain.
- Damper actuator (fire damper). Safety-critical; fire damper closes automatically on fire suppression activation. Actuator failure means damper won't close (fire safety risk) or won't open (no exhaust). $440 to $720, often premium due to safety implications.
- Exhaust fan motor (rooftop). Year 8 to 12 typical. Replacement requires roof access; lift rental adds $300 to $800 depending on building type.
- Fan housing corrosion repair. Grease plus heat over years of operation. Patch repair sometimes possible; replacement housing required when corrosion is structural.
- Lighting upgrades. Older fluorescent or incandescent hood lights replaced with LED. $260 to $540 per fixture. Common upgrade on cleaning visits.
- Filter housing damage. Bent or damaged baffle filter housing. Repair or replacement.
- Halton UV grease-reduction bulb replacement. Periodic UV bulb service on Halton premium variants. Halton-specific.
- Control board (Accurex smart variants). Diagnostic display board failure on Accurex variants with smart controls.
Real repairs
Composite stories from the route.
Four Type I hood repair jobs from the past 90 days. Brand, model context, symptoms, diagnosis, parts, time, total. Names omitted; the technical scenarios are typical of what we see weekly.
Restaurant in Pasadena · CaptiveAire exhaust fan motor (rooftop)
Exhaust fan stopped mid-service. Diagnostic: fan motor end-of-life at year 11. Replacement required rooftop crane access (multi-story commercial building). Total: $1,200 including crane rental and motor replacement plus labor. Made up time on combined visit by also replacing aging belt and pulley as preventive same-trip work.
Hotel kitchen in Beverly Hills · Halton fan belt plus motor capacitor
Fan running but slow, intermittent overload trip. Diagnostic: belt worn (squealing) plus motor capacitor degraded (overload trip on startup). Replaced belt plus pulley plus capacitor as paired service. Total: $440. Halton fan running quiet again.
Commercial bakery in Glendale · Streivor make-up air interlock failure
Couldn't run exhaust because MUA wasn't starting. Diagnostic: interlock relay failed (MUA was operational, but relay wasn't completing the circuit). Replaced relay. Tested full interlock chain across multiple cycles. Total: $560. Streivor MUA integration restored.
Catering kitchen in Long Beach · Accurex damper actuator (fire damper)
Fire damper actuator failed. Safety-critical: with the actuator out, damper won't close on fire suppression activation. Diagnosed and replaced damper actuator (Accurex OEM via Greenheck distribution). Performed safety inspection of fire suppression integration. Total: $890 including premium for safety-critical part plus inspection. Catering operator's insurance carrier received documentation same week.
Scope
What we do for Type I hood repair, and what we don't.
We service: CaptiveAire, Accurex (Greenheck-owned), Halton, Gaylord, Streivor Type I commercial exhaust hoods. Exhaust fan motors (rooftop), belt drive systems, fire damper actuators, make-up air interlock diagnostics, fan housing corrosion repair, capacitor replacement, lighting upgrades (LED conversion), Halton UV grease-reduction bulbs, Accurex smart control board service. Combined repair plus cleaning dispatch via our hood cleaning service.
We don't do: fire suppression chemical service (separate fire-suppression specialty contractor; we visually inspect and report observations, but don't service chemical agents); structural ductwork modification (sheet-metal contractor trade); roof penetration sealing for new exhaust runs (roofing contractor trade). We coordinate with all of these when you need a combined project.
For make-up air specifically: see our make-up air system repair sister page. MUA repair is a distinct service line with Greenheck, CaptiveAire DOAS, Reznor, and Modine brand specifics.

FAQ
Type I hood repair questions.
What's the difference between Type I and Type II hoods?
Type I hoods handle grease-laden vapors from cooking fryers, grills, ranges, charbroilers. They're regulated under NFPA 96 with specific cleaning frequency requirements and fire-suppression integration. Type II hoods handle non-grease vapors from dishwashers, steam ovens, and non-grease cooking; they're less regulated and use simpler ventilation. Most LA-area restaurants have Type I over the cooking line. We service both, but Type I service is the bulk of our hood repair work.
Do you service CaptiveAire, Accurex, Halton, and Gaylord?
Yes. CaptiveAire is the dominant US market brand and the bulk of our service volume. Accurex (Greenheck-owned) and Halton (Finnish premium) are common in mid-to-upscale restaurant kitchens. Gaylord (Welbilt) appears in larger commercial installations. We have brand-specific knowledge across the four; common parts (fan motor capacitors, belt drives, damper actuators) on the van.
My exhaust fan motor failed and it's on the roof. How do you handle access?
Roof access pricing depends on building type. Single-story commercial roof with ladder access: standard service ticket. Multi-story or restricted-access roof requiring lift or crane: lift rental added to service ticket ($300 to $800 typical depending on lift duration). High-rise roof access via building maintenance freight elevator: included in standard service ticket if building permits direct access.
Why does my exhaust fan keep tripping the make-up air interlock?
By code, exhaust fans on Type I hoods must run interlocked with make-up air units. If the MUA isn't operational, the exhaust fan won't start (or trips offline). Common causes: MUA igniter failure (gas-fired MUA), MUA variable speed drive fault, interlock relay failure, sensor wiring damage. We diagnose the interlock chain and identify which component is preventing the exhaust fan from running. Often the fix is on the MUA side, not the exhaust fan itself.
What does Type I hood repair cost in LA?
$120 commercial diagnostic, waived with repair. Common repairs: fan motor capacitor $200 to $360, fan belt plus pulley $260 to $440, damper actuator $440 to $720 (fire damper safety-critical, often premium), exhaust fan motor (rooftop, includes lift rental) $1,200 to $2,400 typical, lighting upgrades (LED conversion) $260 to $540 per fixture. Multi-component repair on aged systems $1,400 to $3,000.
Do you also clean Type I hoods, or just repair?
Both. We do NFPA 96 compliant cleaning on quarterly, semi-annual, or annual schedules per cooking volume. Combined cleaning plus repair dispatch saves the second visit when issues are found during cleaning. See our hood cleaning service page for cleaning pricing and schedule details.
What's your warranty?
90 days SDAR labor warranty on every repair. Brand component warranties (CaptiveAire, Accurex, Halton, Gaylord) processed separately through manufacturer authorized networks. BHGS #A49573 plus EPA 608 Universal #1346255700410 plus CSLB C-20 HVAC.
