Built-In Grill Repair
Southern California
Premium built-in grill service
The grill is part of the kitchen, not a portable appliance.
A built-in Lynx, Fire Magic, or Twin Eagles in a Beverly Hills outdoor kitchen runs $4,500 to $12,000 installed. A Kalamazoo Hybrid Fire grill runs $15,000 to $30,000. These are not portable Weber gas grills. They're permanent appliances integrated into stone or stainless steel cabinetry, hooked to natural gas plumbing, designed to last 12 to 20 years.
When one fails, replacing it is usually impossible. The cabinet was built around the grill, the gas plumbing terminates at the grill, the surround panels are matched to the grill brand. Repair is the only realistic option for 95% of the calls we get.
Our techs service Lynx, Fire Magic, DCS, Twin Eagles, Alfresco, Kalamazoo, Wolf Outdoor, Viking Outdoor, Hestan, and Napoleon as core brand catalog, plus Coyote, Blaze, American Outdoor Grill, Bull, Summerset, and RCS as standard secondary coverage. Most failures are not catastrophic. The most expensive failure on a Lynx, full burner kit replacement, runs $800 to $1,400. The most common failure, dead 9V battery in the battery tray (OEM 80489 on Professional E-series and Sedona), costs $5 and 5 minutes.
Brand catalog
Top failures by brand.
Different ignition systems, different burner architectures, different parts. Most general appliance repair companies don't know which is which. Our techs run brand-specific diagnostic trees on every call.
Lynx (Compton, CA, independent premium)
- Igniter battery dead. Lynx Professional E-series and Sedona use a 9V battery in the battery tray (OEM 80489 on Professional). Most owners don't know it exists. Battery dies at 18 to 24 months, all zones lose spark. We replace the battery, grill works. We see this multiple times per week. L-series and newer (L, M, N, P, Q) use 110V hot surface ignition, no battery.
- Spark module failure. Typically year 7+. Replacement module $180 to $280 depending on grill series (L27, L30, L36, L42, L48, L54). 30-minute swap.
- Burner corrosion. Cast brass burners on L-Series last 8 to 12 years. Stainless on Sedona by Lynx last 12 to 15. Replacement $90 to $180 per zone.
- Rotisserie motor seized. Lynx rotisserie motor (1.5 hp). Replacement around $280, 45 minutes.
- Regulator drop. Gas valves stuck partially open after years of cycling. $220 to $350 part.
Fire Magic (RH Peterson Co., City of Industry, CA)
- Hot-surface igniter (Echelon series). Burns out at 6 to 8 years. Replacement $80 to $140, 20 minutes.
- Burner replacement. Echelon E660s, E790s, Aurora A540s. Cast stainless, 10+ year lifespan. Cost depends on size.
- Sear burner failure. High-heat sear zones cycle harder than main burners and fail first. Common at 5 to 7 years.
- Light/timer switch electrical fault. Echelon Diamond LED system pulls a lot of current; switches pit and need replacement.
DCS by Fisher & Paykel (Haier-owned since 2012)
- Igniter module failure. DCS uses electronic ignition with a different architecture than Lynx. Module failures more common than battery issues. $240 to $380 part.
- Ceramic radiant tray cracked. The U-shaped radiant under each burner. Heat shock causes cracks at 5 to 10 years. $80 to $150 per tray.
- Burner valve seized. Common at 8+ years on Series 9 and Series 7.
Twin Eagles (Camarillo, CA β now part of Dometic Group)
- Stainless burner pinhole. Quality cast stainless, but coastal salt accelerates pinhole formation. Replace at first sign. Running with a pinhole burns out the manifold next.
- Hot rod igniter failure. Twin Eagles uses hot rod (glow bar) ignition, not spark. When the rod fails, the affected zone won't light. Replacement is straightforward.
- Drip tray rust-through. Usually year 8 to 10. Stainless replacement available.
Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet (premium hybrid grills)
Hybrid Fire (gas plus charcoal plus wood) units have failure modes specific to the firebox design. The charcoal/wood drawer mechanism (the "smoke cabinet" on K500HS, K750HS, K1000HS): runners corrode, the drawer sticks. Cleaning plus lubrication usually solves it. Major failures are rare; these grills are over-engineered. When something does fail, parts come from Michigan and run 5 to 10 days.
Wolf Outdoor (Sub-Zero Group)
Wolf outdoor grills (OG30, OG36, OG42) are manufactured by Twin Eagles in Camarillo and branded by Sub-Zero Group with Wolf controls. U-burner architecture shared with Twin Eagles. Failures we see: ignition module ($240 to $340), burner orifice clogged (common after 4+ years if the cover wasn't used between cooks).
Hestan (premium, recent entry to outdoor)
Hestan GMBR and GSBR grills. High-end mid-2010s introduction. Quality is excellent but parts inventory in the field is thinner than Lynx or Fire Magic. We can source most parts within 5 to 7 days. Igniter failures and burner valve issues are most common.
Viking Outdoor (Middleby brand, separate from Viking residential)
Viking VGBQ and VGIQ outdoor grills. Similar architecture to Wolf: brass burners, electronic ignition. The Viking ProClassic line had a controller failure pattern at 6 to 8 years on some 2014 to 2018 builds. Replacement available.
Napoleon (Canadian, mid-premium) and Alfresco (BBQG Inc.)
Napoleon Prestige and BIPT series. We service these but they're closer to mass-market than the others on this list. Common: burner corrosion (lower-grade stainless than Lynx or Twin Eagles), igniter battery (similar to Lynx). Alfresco ALXE-42 and ALXE-56 are robust units with simple ignition systems. Failures concentrate at 8+ years: regulator pressure drop, ignition module, burner replacement. Parts have good availability.
Diagnostic process
Our standard sequence on a "grill not working" call.
- Battery check. Lynx Professional E-series and Sedona use a 9V battery in the battery tray. Napoleon mass-market grills use AAA in the module. Pull and check. About 10% of calls end here.
- Spark/hot rod test. Visual confirmation of spark across the electrode gap. For hot rod systems (Twin Eagles, some DCS), continuity test on the glow bar.
- Gas pressure at the regulator. Natural gas should be 4 to 7 inches WC, propane 11 to 13 inches WC. Low pressure means regulator issue or supply issue.
- Burner orifice inspection. Look up into each orifice from below. Spider webs and grease blockage are common.
- Rotisserie burner test. Separate circuit on most premium grills. Often fails independently of the main burners.
- Side burner or sear zone separate diagnostic. These have their own valves and igniters and need to be tested independently.
We carry: Lynx spark modules, 9V and AAA batteries, common Fire Magic hot-surface igniters, DCS ceramic radiants, Twin Eagles glow rods, regulators for all major brands. Eight of ten jobs are one-visit fixes.
Real repairs
Composite stories from the route.
Five jobs from the past 90 days. Models, symptoms, diagnosis, parts, time, total. Names omitted; the technical scenarios are typical of what we see weekly.
Beverly Hills, Lynx Professional E48 (2010 install)
Owner called Tuesday: no spark on left zone. Tech checked: battery in tray dead. Replaced 9V (OEM 80489). Working. Total: $120 diagnostic, no parts charge, diagnostic waived because the issue was a battery. 30-minute call.
Malibu, Twin Eagles TEBQ54RS (2016 install)
Center burner not lighting. Tested glow rod: failed. Stainless pinhole on the next zone over (caught it on inspection). Replaced glow rod plus the burner with the pinhole. Avoided manifold burnout. Total: $120 plus $340 parts plus 1.5 hours = $620.
Pacific Palisades, Fire Magic Echelon E790s (2019 install)
Main burner left zone not lighting. Hot-surface igniter test: open circuit. Replaced igniter. Tested ignition cycle, working. Total: $120 plus $115 part = $325 with labor.
Bel Air, Kalamazoo K500HS hybrid (2020 install)
Owner reported drawer jammed. Inspected: heavy charcoal residue had crystallized on the runner mechanism. 90-minute clean plus lubrication, no parts. Tested drawer cycle 20+ times. Total: $360 (1.5-hour service call). Customer sent two referrals.
Newport Beach, DCS BE1-36RC (2014 install)
Left burner ceramic radiant cracked. Replaced single radiant. While there, inspected the other three. One had a hairline crack starting. Replaced both. Total: $120 plus $290 parts plus 45 minutes = $480. Customer agreed because the second radiant would have failed within months.
Scope
What we do, and what we don't.
We service: Lynx, Fire Magic, DCS, Twin Eagles, Alfresco, Kalamazoo, Wolf Outdoor, Viking Outdoor, Hestan, Napoleon, Coyote, Blaze, American Outdoor Grill, Bull, Summerset, RCS.
We don't do full grill replacement when the existing unit can be repaired (we'll tell you straight when repair makes sense vs replacement); built-in grill installation as new construction (we partner with outdoor kitchen contractors for new builds, and we service what's installed); custom modification of grill cabinetry.
If you have a portable grill (Weber, Char-Broil, mass-market), we don't service these. Replacement is cheaper than service-call labor on units under $800 retail. That's an honest answer, not a sales pitch.
Pricing
What grill repair costs in Southern California.
Diagnostic is $120 (commercial tier, applied to outdoor work), waived with repair. Quote in writing before any parts are ordered. BHGS #A49573 and EPA 608 certified.

Why we get called back
What separates our grill service from general appliance repair.
- Brand expertise. Lynx vs Fire Magic vs DCS: different ignition systems, different burner architectures, different parts. Most "appliance repair" companies don't know which is which.
- Parts on the van. Lynx spark modules, 9V and AAA batteries, Fire Magic hot-surface igniters, common DCS radiants, Twin Eagles glow rods, regulators for the top six brands.
- Coastal salt expertise. Malibu, Newport Beach, Pacific Palisades calls are about 35% of our grill work. We know which parts fail near saltwater.
- Honest replace-vs-repair. A 14-year-old grill with a $1,800 burner kit failure may not be worth fixing. We'll say so.
- EPA 608. Covers the few outdoor grills with refrigerated drawers integrated into the cabinet.
- BHGS #A49573 plus BBB A+. Verifiable with the state and the bureau.
- Same-day across LA, Orange County, Ventura. Next-day for Riverside and San Bernardino.
FAQ
Built-in grill repair questions.
My Lynx grill won't spark on any zone. What's the issue?
Nine times out of ten on Professional E-series and Sedona it's the 9V battery in the battery tray (OEM 80489 on Professional). Most Lynx owners don't know the battery exists. Replace it ($5), works again. If it's not the battery, the next most likely is the spark module itself ($180-280 part, 30-minute swap). On L-series and newer (L, M, N, P, Q) which use 110V hot surface ignition, the failure is usually the hot surface igniter element itself.
Do you service Kalamazoo hybrid grills?
Yes. Most Kalamazoo failures are mechanical (drawer mechanisms on the K500HS, K750HS, K1000HS smoke cabinet, hinges) rather than electronic. Parts come from Michigan in 5 to 10 days. Cleaning and lubrication often solves what looks like major failure. The Hybrid Fire architecture is over-engineered, so when something does fail it's usually a wear part rather than a system collapse.
My Twin Eagles burner has a small hole in it. Is it still safe?
The grill will still ignite, but you should replace the burner soon. Pinhole burners burn unevenly downstream and can damage the manifold (the gas distribution piece) or warp the firebox. We've seen $90 burner repairs delayed turn into $1,400 manifold replacements. Salt air accelerates this. Coastal grills in Malibu, Newport Beach, and Pacific Palisades should be inspected annually for burner pinhole formation.
How long do premium built-in grills last with proper repair?
Lynx and Fire Magic Echelon: 15-20 years with maintenance. Twin Eagles: 18-25 years. Kalamazoo: 25+ years (genuinely). DCS: 12-18 years. The grills outlast multiple kitchen remodels. Replacement is rarely the right answer until the cabinet itself is being redone.
Do you do outdoor kitchen construction?
No. We service grills that are already installed. For new builds we work with several Beverly Hills, Calabasas, and Pacific Palisades outdoor kitchen contractors and can refer. Custom modification of grill cabinetry is also outside our scope. We service what's installed.
What's the warranty on grill repairs?
Ninety days parts and labor on every repair. If the same part fails within 90 days, we replace it free. No exceptions, no fine print. BHGS #A49573 and BBB A+ accredited.
Can you fix grills in Malibu and Calabasas?
Yes. Both are core service areas. Malibu is serviced from our West Hollywood and Thousand Oaks branches. Calabasas is serviced from Thousand Oaks. We stock extra burners and igniters specifically for coastal salt-corrosion patterns common to those installations. Newport Beach and Newport Coast are run from Irvine on the same coastal-stock principle.
