01 · What we do

Display cases are commercial refrigeration's most demanding category.

Display cases are customer-facing. Glass doors must stay clear of fog, lighting must be flattering, temperature must hold without visible condensation, and the whole unit must look pristine while running 24/7 in retail environments. When a deli case fogs, customers walk past. When a bakery case ices over, the pastries ship to the trash.

Our techs service display cases across LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. Two architectures: self-contained (compressor and condenser inside the case, typical for grocery aisle merchandisers, smaller deli cases, single-unit bakery displays) and remote-condensed (compressor and condenser mounted on the roof or in a back room, refrigerant lines run to the case, typical for larger restaurant deli setups, multi-case grocery installations).

Most appliance shops decline remote-condensed display cases because the line set work and roof access fall outside their training. We service both. EPA 608 Universal certified. BHGS #A49573. BBB Accredited. Phones answered 24/7. Parent context: commercial refrigeration repair.

Common brands we see: Hussmann (Panasonic-owned, dominant in LA grocery), Federal Industries (Wisconsin, dominant in deli and bakery cases), True TG-Series (Trulaske family), Howard McCray (Pennsylvania, premium deli and bakery), Beverage-Air (Ali Group, retail merchandisers), Hoshizaki Display (premium Japanese).

02 · Typical display case failures

Ten failure modes account for nearly every display case service call.

  1. Glass-frame anti-condensation heater wire failure (year 5 to 8). The most common display case failure. Heater wire embedded in the door frame fails (open-circuit), glass front fogs, customers can't see product. Replacement requires partial frame disassembly. $340 to $620.
  2. Internal humidity control issues. Defrost cycle imbalance causes excess moisture inside the case. Food sweats, presentation degrades. Diagnostic of defrost timing plus airflow patterns.
  3. Condenser fan motor (self-contained units). Same as reach-ins, 4 to 6 year coastal life. $280 to $500.
  4. Evaporator fan motor. Circulates cold air through case interior. $260 to $450.
  5. LED lighting harness corrosion. Display lighting harness fails at humid corners. Critical because customer-facing aesthetic. $260 to $480.
  6. Door gasket compression. Heavy customer-facing door cycling (200+ per day on grocery displays). $200 to $380 per door.
  7. Defrost timer or control board. Modern displays use defrost boards, legacy use timers. $300 to $580.
  8. Refrigerant leak (remote-condensed). Line set leaks at brazed joints. EPA 608 leak repair before recharge. $700 to $1,500.
  9. Sliding door track corrosion. Sliding-door variants on bakery and deli, track replacement, customer-facing aesthetic critical.
  10. Glass-edge desiccant breach. Glass-panel desiccant fails, double-pane glass develops permanent fog. Replacement glass panel.

03 · Two architectures, different repair playbooks

Self-contained vs remote-condensed.

Self-contained displays

  • Compressor plus condenser inside the case body
  • Heat rejected from back or bottom of unit into the room
  • Easier service access (everything in one place)
  • Limited cooling capacity (smaller compressor)
  • Most deli grab-and-go cases, small bakery cases, beverage merchandisers
  • Service brands: Federal Industries small cases, True TG-Series, Beverage-Air merchandisers

Remote-condensed displays

  • Compressor plus condensing unit mounted on roof OR in back room
  • Refrigerant line set runs from condensing unit to case
  • Much higher cooling capacity (larger compressor)
  • Heat rejected outside the building (no room load)
  • Most grocery store multi-case banks, large restaurant deli setups
  • Service brands: Hussmann (most LA grocery), Howard McCray premium, Federal Industries large cases
  • Many appliance shops won't service these. They require line set work, sometimes roof access, knowledge of pre-charged systems vs field-charged. We do them.

04 · Recent jobs

Real repair stories from the last few weeks.

Composite examples; model numbers, ages, and prices are accurate to typical scope.

Beverly Hills · Federal Industries deli case 8' SN8 series, 11 years old, R-134a self-contained

EPA 608 leak repair: pumped down, brazed line repair, vacuum to 500 microns, recharged R-404A. Coordinated with grocery operations to minimize stocked inventory disruption. Total: $120 plus $620 refrigerant plus $880 labor plus leak detection = $1,820. Insurance documentation provided.

West Hollywood · True TG-2 two-section glass-door merchandiser, 7 years old, R-290

Deli. Temp climbing in left section. Diagnosed: condenser fan motor seized (self-contained unit, 7 years). Replaced motor (True OEM). R-290 system requires R-290 certification, we have it. Pulldown to 38°F. Total: $120 plus $295 part plus 1 hour = $480.

Santa Monica · Howard McCray dual-zone dessert display, 6 years old

Restaurant kitchen plus dining-room display. Internal humidity high, desserts sweating. Diagnosed: defrost cycle running too long (timer drift) plus internal fan recirculating moisture. Adjusted defrost timer, replaced internal recirculation fan. Total: $120 plus $385 plus 2 hours = $750.

Marina del Rey · Beverage-Air vertical merchandiser MMR49, 5 years old

Coffee shop. LED lighting flickering on right side. Diagnosed: LED harness corrosion at lower right (coastal moisture). Replaced harness section. Total: $120 plus $310 part plus 1 hour = $510.

05 · Honest scope

What we do, and what we don't.

We service:

  • Self-contained display cases (all sizes, all brands listed)
  • Remote-condensed display cases (line set work, roof access, multi-case banks)
  • Glass-frame anti-condensation heater service
  • Defrost cycle diagnosis and adjustment
  • LED lighting harness replacement (when refrigeration-integrated)
  • All EPA-permitted refrigerants (R-22, R-134a, R-404A, R-448A, R-449A, R-290, R-454B)
  • Hussmann, Federal Industries, True TG, Howard McCray, Beverage-Air, Hoshizaki Display

We don't do:

  • New display case installation (specialty installer trade)
  • Remote-condensed condenser unit roof installation (HVAC C-20 contractor)
  • Multi-case grocery rack systems with multiplexed condensers (specialty C-38 contractor)
  • Stand-alone aesthetic glass replacement (specialty glass trade, though we coordinate)
  • Display lighting that's purely electrical (not refrigeration-integrated)

Knowing the boundary is part of being a real practitioner. Premium retail and restaurant operators value contractors who refer specialty work to specialists rather than fake competence.

EPA 608 leak repair always required before refrigerant recharge per Section 608 regulations. We cannot legally just "top off" a leaking system.

07 · Why operators call us

Nine reasons.

  • Remote-condensed expertise. Many shops decline these. We service them.
  • EPA 608 Universal certified for sealed systems including line sets. See our EPA 608 page.
  • Anti-condensation heater service. The number-one display case service item, we do it routinely.
  • Multi-case grocery coordination. We work with grocery operations to minimize inventory disruption during service.
  • Customer-facing aesthetic awareness. Display cases are not just refrigeration, they're presentation. We respect that.
  • 24/7 phone answering, no emergency surcharge. $120 anytime.
  • BHGS #A49573 plus BBB Accredited. Verifiable.
  • Same-day across LA, Orange County, Ventura. Next-day for Rancho Cucamonga and Temecula.
  • Honest scope. Supermarket multiplexed rack systems are C-38 trade, not us. We say so.

08 · FAQ

Display case repair, common questions.

My deli case glass keeps fogging. What's wrong?

9 times out of 10, the anti-condensation heater wire in the glass door frame failed. Common at year 5 to 8. Replacement requires partial frame disassembly to access the heater wire. $340 to $620 typical.

Do you service Hussmann grocery display cases?

Yes. Hussmann (Panasonic-owned) is dominant in LA grocery. We service both their self-contained and remote-condensed lines. Multi-case bank coordination is part of our work, we coordinate with grocery operations to minimize inventory disruption during service.

What's the difference between self-contained and remote-condensed?

Self-contained: compressor inside the case, heat rejected into the room. Easier service. Remote-condensed: compressor on the roof or in a back room, refrigerant line set runs to the case. Higher capacity, but requires line set service knowledge that many appliance shops don't have. We do both.

My display case has a permanent fog between the glass panes. Can it be cleaned?

No, that's glass-edge desiccant breach. The desiccant inside the double-pane glass has failed, allowing moisture into the sealed glass cavity. Solution is glass panel replacement, not cleaning. We coordinate with glass trade for the glass replacement, then re-seal.

Can you service a multi-case grocery refrigeration bank?

Individual cases yes. The multiplexed condenser rack system (where multiple cases share a single roof condenser bank) is C-38 contractor specialty trade, we refer out. We service the cases themselves and individual remote-condensed configurations.

My display case lights are flickering on one side.

Usually LED harness corrosion at one corner (coastal humidity is brutal on display lighting). Replace the affected harness section. $260 to $480 typical.

What's your warranty on display case repairs?

90 days SDAR labor warranty on every repair. BHGS #A49573, EPA 608 Universal certified (#1346255700410), BBB Accredited Business.

Display Case Down? Call Us 24/7.

Self-contained plus remote-condensed. EPA 608 certified. Same-day across LA, OC, Ventura. No emergency surcharge. BHGS #A49573.
