GE Dryer Runs but Won't Heat? Start With the Vent

02 · Does a GE dryer show a code?
Usually not — and that's normal for GE.
Unlike Samsung or LG, most GE dryers are diagnosed by symptom, not by a digital code. A GE that won't heat typically just runs cold with nothing on the display, and you find the fault by testing the heating parts rather than reading a code off the panel. If your older GE shows no code, that doesn't mean the control board is dead — it's simply how GE dryers work.
That's begun to change on GE's newest models (roughly 2024 onward), which added a limited set of heater-related codes such as HE (heater error) and E60 through E64. If your recent GE shows one of those, it points at the heating circuit. Either way — code or no code — the diagnosis is the same order: vent and power first, then the element, thermostats, and fuse. 03 · Why a GE dryer stops heating
The causes, in the order our techs find them.
Restricted vent → tripped thermostat / thermal fuse (most common)
A lint-clogged filter or duct chokes airflow, the dryer overheats, and a high-limit thermostat or the one-time thermal fuse trips and cuts the heat. It only stays fixed once the vent that tripped it is cleared.
Heating element / coils (electric models)
GE electric dryers heat with coils on a heater assembly. When a coil burns open, the dryer tumbles cold. Tested for continuity (a good coil reads roughly 8 to 15 ohms) and replaced — a tech job inside the cabinet.
Cycling and high-limit thermostats
GE dryers use thermostats to regulate and cap the temperature. A failed cycling thermostat can leave the dryer cold; the high-limit trips on overheat, again usually from a blocked vent.
Gas models — igniter, valve coils, flame sensor
On a gas GE, no-heat usually means the burner isn't lighting: a weak igniter, failed gas-valve solenoid coils, or a bad flame sensor. An igniter that glows then goes out without the gas lighting points to the coils. Gas parts are a tech job — never DIY the gas valve.
04 · What you can safely check
Clear the vent, reset the breaker.
- Clean the lint filter and the full vent. Wash the filter, clear the hose behind the dryer, and confirm the exterior flap opens. This fixes most no-heat calls — and removes the fire hazard.
- Reset both breaker legs (electric). Flip the 240V double breaker fully off and on. A single tripped leg tumbles without heat.
- Confirm gas supply (gas). Verify the gas is on and other gas appliances work. Don't touch the gas valve or line.
- Note any code (newer models). If your recent GE shows HE or an E6x code, mention it when you call — it points at the heating circuit.
- Watch whether it returns. Heat restored after a vent cleaning = it was airflow. Still cold on a clear vent = a failed part.
Where to stop: vent cleaning and the breaker check are safe and fix most GE no-heat calls. Do not open the cabinet to test the heating coils, thermostats, or thermal fuse, and never disturb the gas line or valve on a gas dryer. A no-heat that survives a full vent cleaning is the handoff point.
