Long-cycle diagnostic

If a load is taking 2 to 3 cycles, the cause is almost always the vent. And it's a fire risk worth taking seriously.

A dryer that takes far longer than it used to is the third most common service call we make in LA. The dryer heats normally, the drum tumbles, but loads come out damp at the end of the cycle and need a second or third run. About 80% of these calls trace to a restricted dryer vent. The remaining 20% are heating components that are degrading but have not fully failed yet.

This service call is a fire safety call as much as it is a performance call. The US Fire Administration tracks roughly 2,900 residential dryer fires per year nationally with lint accumulation as the leading ignition source. In LA, we routinely see vents that have not been cleaned in 8 to 15 years on homes built in the 1970s and 1980s, and the lint density inside those vents is enough to ignite if dryer airflow drops below a critical threshold and the cabinet overheats. Our techs treat every long-cycle call as a fire-prevention visit.

$89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. Vent clearance starts at $145. BHGS #A49573. EPA 608 Universal #1346255700410. BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7. We service all major brands: Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Electrolux, Bosch, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Miele, Thermador, Speed Queen, and others.

LA fire safety angle

Why a clogged vent matters more in LA than most cities.

Three factors make dryer vent fires a particular issue in our service area.

Aging housing stock with original vent runs

A large share of LA single-family homes were built between 1950 and 1985, and many of those still have the original dryer vent runs. We've cleared vents in West LA, Pasadena, and the San Fernando Valley that had never been professionally cleaned in 25+ years. The lint accumulation in those runs was not just a performance issue; it was a fire ready to start.

Long vent runs in second-story laundry rooms

LA homes built since 2000 often have laundry on the second floor with vent runs of 25 to 40 feet routed through interior walls. Long runs accumulate lint faster because every bend in the run creates a turbulence point where fibers settle. These vents need clearance every 6 to 9 months, not annually.

Stackable units in condos and apartments

Stackable washer-dryer combos in LA condos often have vent runs hidden behind drywall with no easy access. The vent run is part of the building, not the unit, which means HOA approval is sometimes needed for full clearance. We work with HOA management on these calls and document the work for resident files.

What we look for during clearance

Brittle foil flex hose (replace with rigid metal duct), crushed sections behind the dryer (typical when the dryer was pushed back hard against the wall), bird nests in exterior vent caps (very common in our coverage area, especially in spring), and dampers that have rusted shut. Each of these compounds the lint problem.

Diagnostic order

How we diagnose long cycles in 30 to 45 minutes.

  1. Exterior vent airflow test. We measure airflow at the exterior vent cap with the dryer running on high heat. Above 1,500 feet per minute is normal. Between 800 and 1,500 is restricted. Below 800 is severely restricted and a fire risk.
  2. Lint trap inspection. Quick visual to make sure the homeowner's screen is clean and undamaged. Tear in the screen lets lint past into the blower housing.
  3. Vent line inspection. Disconnect at the dryer, look down the vent run with a borescope or strong flashlight. Heavy lint accumulation visible within the first 6 feet means the entire run needs clearance.
  4. Brush clearance with vacuum capture. Rotating brush through the vent run, multiple passes if needed. Vacuum captures the dislodged lint as it comes out. We pull lint out in batches and weigh it for the customer record on long runs.
  5. Exterior cap inspection. Check the damper, bird guard, and rodent guard. Replace if rusted or restricting flow.
  6. Post-clearance airflow verification. Re-measure airflow after clearance. Normal reading confirms the vent is the issue. Still-low reading after thorough clearance points to a damaged duct that needs replacement.
  7. Heating component test (if vent is clear and cycles are still long). Heating element ohms, thermistor reading, moisture sensor reading, control board output verification.

Brand notes

Long-cycle patterns by brand.

  • Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid (Whirlpool family). Long-cycle calls almost always trace to vent. Heating element starts to degrade at year 8 to 10 on units with restricted vents.
  • GE. Same vent-first pattern. Hot-surface igniter on gas models can produce intermittent long cycles when it's getting tired.
  • Samsung. DV series moisture sensors are sensitive to dryer sheet residue. Year 5+ Samsung dryers often need sensor cleaning along with vent clearance.
  • LG. SmartDiagnosis on LG dryers often reports "low airflow" before the user notices long cycles. We confirm with anemometer.
  • Electrolux, Frigidaire (Electrolux family). Heating element degradation pattern at year 7 to 9 typical. Vent and element together is the standard repair.
  • Bosch (USA dryer line plus 800 Series condenser). Condenser dryers don't have a wall vent, but they have a condenser unit that needs separate cleaning. We cover condenser dryer service on the parent pillar.
  • Miele, Thermador. Premium tier. Heat pump models on this tier need different diagnostic (compressor and refrigerant circuit) which we cover on the parent pillar.
  • Speed Queen. Built tougher. Long-cycle calls are almost always vent-only. Heating components last 12+ years.

FAQ

Long-cycle and vent clearance questions.

Why is my dryer taking 2 hours to dry one load?

About 80% of the time it's a restricted dryer vent, not a failed component. The vent is the path that hot, moist air takes from the dryer to the outside of your house. As lint accumulates inside the vent over years, the airflow drops. The dryer compensates by running longer, but eventually the load comes out damp because the moist air has nowhere to go. We clear the vent on every long-cycle call we make and confirm airflow with an anemometer before we leave.

Is a clogged dryer vent really a fire hazard?

Yes, and the LAFD takes it seriously. The US Fire Administration tracks roughly 2,900 dryer fires per year nationally with lint accumulation as the leading cause. In our LA service area we see vents that have not been cleaned in 8 to 15 years routinely — the lint inside is dense enough to ignite from the dryer's heating element if airflow drops below a critical threshold. This is why we include vent inspection on every long-cycle call. It is not optional in our diagnostic.

How often should I clean my dryer vent?

Once per year for a typical LA household with daily laundry. More often (every 6 months) if you have multiple people, pets, or a long vent run (over 25 feet). The lint trap inside the dryer catches maybe 60% of the lint produced. The rest goes into the vent, where it accumulates at predictable rates. Our LA vent clearance ranges from $145 to $245 depending on length and access.

Is it the vent or is it a heating problem?

Both produce long cycle times. We test by measuring exterior vent airflow first. Below 1,500 feet per minute means vent restriction is the primary issue. Normal airflow plus long cycle time points to a failing heating component (usually a heating element starting to short, or a thermistor giving the control board bad readings). We test both at the diagnostic visit, in that order.

What does vent clearance involve?

We disconnect the dryer at the wall, run a rotating brush through the vent line from the dryer side, vacuum the lint out as we go, and verify airflow at the exterior cap. If the exterior cap has a damper or bird guard that is restricting flow, we replace it. On vent runs over 25 feet or with multiple bends, we may need to clean from both ends. Standard residential vent clearance runs 45 to 90 minutes.

What if vent clearance doesn't fix the long cycle?

Then the cause is a failing heating component or a faulty moisture sensor. About 15 to 20% of long-cycle calls fall in this category. We test the heating element ohms, the thermistor or moisture sensor reading, and the control board output. The most common second-cause repair is a heating element that has degraded but not yet fully failed (still produces some heat, but at reduced output). Replacement runs $285 to $425.

What's your warranty?
