Maytag Dryer Runs but Won't Heat? Start With the Fuse and Vent
Maytag runs the Whirlpool heating platform, so a no-heat call is usually a blown thermal fuse from a clogged vent — a fire risk. Here's what to check, what the 10-year warranty really covers, and when it's a tech job.

01 · The short answer
A Maytag that won't heat almost always blew a thermal fuse.
When a Maytag dryer tumbles but won't heat, the signature cause is a blown thermal fuse — a one-time safety device that trips when a clogged exhaust vent makes the dryer overheat. After the fuse come the heating element and the thermal cut-off; electric models may show an AF restricted-airflow message. On a gas Maytag, it's a weak igniter, gas-valve coils, or the flame sensor. Maytag dryers use the Whirlpool heating platform, so the diagnosis matches Whirlpool and Amana. Clean the filter and full vent first — a fuse that blew from a blocked vent will just blow again until the airflow is fixed. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair.
Why the vent comes first — and fast: the lint-clogged vent that stops your Maytag from heating is a leading cause of house fires. The U.S. Fire Administration counts about 15,600 dryer fires a year, and the NFPA finds failure to clean the dryer and its venting is the number-one factor. A dryer running hot, showing AF, or refusing to heat is worth clearing the same day.
02 · What the 10-year warranty actually covers
The Maytag 10-year warranty won't cover a no-heat repair.
Maytag advertises a 10-year limited parts warranty, and it's a real selling point — but it's worth knowing what it covers before you assume a no-heat fix is free. On Maytag dryers, that 10-year coverage is for the drum and the drive motor specifically. The parts that actually cause no-heat — the thermal fuse, heating element, thermal cut-off, and on gas models the igniter and valve coils — fall under the standard 1-year parts-and-labor warranty.
So on a Maytag past its first year, a no-heat repair is typically out of pocket, whether you call Maytag or us. The good news: these are among the most affordable dryer parts, and Maytag runs the same rugged Whirlpool platform we service every week — see the Whirlpool not-heating guide for the full platform breakdown that applies here too.
03 · Why a Maytag dryer stops heating
The causes, in the order our techs find them.
Blown thermal fuse from a restricted vent (most common)
A lint-clogged filter or duct chokes airflow, the dryer overheats, and the one-time thermal fuse trips and cuts the heat. It's replaced, not reset, and only stays fixed once the vent that blew it is cleared.
Heating element (electric models)
The element heats the air; when it burns open, the dryer tumbles cold. Tested for continuity and replaced inside the cabinet — a tech job.
Thermal cut-off / high-limit thermostat · AF airflow
The cut-off and high-limit protect against overheating and are usually replaced with the fuse as a kit. An AF message flags the same restricted airflow — clean the vent and clear it.
Gas models — igniter, valve coils, flame sensor
On a gas Maytag, no-heat usually means the burner isn't lighting: a weak igniter, failed gas-valve solenoid coils, or a bad flame sensor. An igniter that glows then goes out without lighting points to the coils. Gas parts are a tech job — never DIY the gas valve.
04 · What you can safely check
Clear the vent, reset the breaker.
- Clean the lint filter and the full vent. Wash the filter, clear the hose behind the dryer, and confirm the exterior flap opens. This fixes most no-heat, AF, and blown-fuse calls — and removes the fire hazard.
- Reset both breaker legs (electric). Flip the 240V double breaker fully off and on. A single tripped leg tumbles without heat.
- Confirm gas supply (gas). Verify the gas is on and other gas appliances work. Don't touch the gas valve or line.
- Clear an AF message. After cleaning the vent, touch any key or power-cycle to dismiss it.
- Watch whether it returns. Heat restored after a vent cleaning = it was airflow. Still cold on a clear vent = a failed part.
Where to stop: vent cleaning and the breaker check are safe and fix most Maytag no-heat calls. Do not open the cabinet to test the thermal fuse, element, or thermostat, and never disturb the gas line or valve on a gas dryer. A no-heat that survives a full vent cleaning is the handoff point.
05 · When it's a tech job
Clean vent, still cold? Time for a diagnostic.
When the vent is verified clear and the Maytag still won't heat, the fault is inside: an open thermal fuse and cut-off (plus the vent that blew them), a burned-out heating element, or on gas the igniter, valve coils, or flame sensor. Our techs verify the vent first, then test the heating circuit and replace the failed parts — usually the fuse and cut-off as a kit. These are among the more affordable dryer repairs. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with the repair.

06 · FAQ
Maytag dryer not heating: common questions.
Why is my Maytag dryer not heating?
On a Maytag dryer that tumbles but won't heat, the signature cause is a blown thermal fuse — a one-time safety device that trips when a clogged exhaust vent makes the dryer overheat. After the fuse come the heating element and the thermal cut-off (high-limit thermostat); electric models may also show an AF restricted-airflow message. On a gas Maytag, a weak igniter, gas-valve coils, or a bad flame sensor stops the burner. Maytag dryers use the Whirlpool heating platform, so the diagnosis matches Whirlpool and Amana. Clean the vent first — a fuse that blew from a blocked vent will just blow again until the airflow is fixed.
Doesn't Maytag have a 10-year warranty? Will it cover a no-heat repair?
Usually not the part you need. Maytag advertises a 10-year limited parts warranty, but on dryers that coverage is for the drum and the drive motor specifically — not the heating system. The parts that cause no-heat (thermal fuse, heating element, thermal cut-off, and on gas the igniter and valve coils) fall under the standard 1-year parts-and-labor warranty. So on a Maytag past its first year, a no-heat repair is typically out of pocket, and it's worth knowing that before you call Maytag expecting it to be free. The good news is these are among the more affordable dryer parts.
What does the AF code mean on a Maytag dryer?
AF stands for restricted airflow — the control detected that air isn't moving through the exhaust properly, almost always a clogged filter, a blocked or crushed vent, or a plugged exterior flap. It's the same root cause behind most no-heat and blown-fuse calls. Clean the filter and the full vent, then touch any key to clear it. If AF returns on a clear vent, the airflow sensor or blower needs a look.
Can I fix a Maytag dryer that won't heat myself?
The safe, high-value step is yours: clean the lint filter and clear the entire exhaust vent — hose behind the dryer and exterior flap included. That resolves most no-heat, AF, and blown-fuse calls and removes a real fire hazard. Also reset both halves of the 240V breaker on an electric Maytag; if one leg trips, the drum tumbles but the heat is dead. Don't open the cabinet to test the thermal fuse, element, or thermostat, and never touch the gas line or valve on a gas model. Those are tech jobs.
Is a dryer that won't heat a fire hazard?
Yes — the clogged vent that most often stops a Maytag from heating is also a leading fire cause. The U.S. Fire Administration reports roughly 15,600 dryer fires a year, and the NFPA finds failure to clean the dryer and its venting is the number-one factor, with lint the most common material to ignite. A Maytag running hot, showing AF, or refusing to heat is worth clearing the same day — it fixes the heat and removes the hazard together.
