Won't-start diagnostic

Dryer dead at the door. Six suspects, ranked by frequency.

A dryer that won't start is the fourth most common dryer service call we make. The symptom can present as a completely dead dryer (no lights, no display), or as a partly alive dryer (panel lights up, but pressing start does nothing). Both versions trace to a small set of components, and the diagnostic order is the same across brands.

Most won't-start calls resolve at one of these six suspects: door switch, thermal fuse, start switch or membrane keypad, control board, power cord, or the breaker and outlet (external to the dryer). Roughly 60% of won't-start calls are door switch failures. Thermal fuse failures present as won't-start on Whirlpool family dryers because the fuse is wired in series with the motor circuit on those models.

Our techs service all major brands: Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Electrolux, Bosch, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Miele, Thermador, Speed Queen, and others. Both gas and electric. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573. EPA 608 Universal #1346255700410. BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7.

Six suspects

What the symptom tells us before we open the dryer.

Two patterns at the door tell us which subset to test first: completely dead, or panel-alive but won't start.

Completely dead: no lights, no display

External power problem in 70% of cases. Tripped breaker (most common), failed power cord, failed wall outlet, or partial power loss (one of two 120V legs missing on a 240V circuit). We confirm with a multimeter at the outlet before opening the dryer cabinet. Repair on external causes runs $0 (breaker reset) to $145 (cord replacement). Internal causes (failed control board transformer, blown internal fuse) are rarer and cost $345 to $525 to repair.

Panel lights, won't start: door switch first

This is the dominant won't-start pattern. Live panel means the control board is awake, the power supply is good, and the timer or display is working. The control board just won't initiate a cycle. Top suspect: door switch. The door switch is a small spring-loaded switch in the door frame that reports door-closed status to the board. Year 4 to 8 typical wear. Replacement runs $125 to $185.

Panel lights, won't start: thermal fuse second (Whirlpool family)

On Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana dryers, the thermal fuse is wired in series with the motor. When the fuse blows, the dryer goes dead in motor function but the panel often still lights. We test the fuse on every won't-start call on these brands. Repair plus vent inspection runs $145 to $245.

Panel lights, won't start: start switch or membrane keypad

Year 8+ typical, more common on touchpad models than mechanical-button models. The membrane keypad develops dead spots where the start button no longer registers. Replacement runs $145 to $245 depending on whether it's a stand-alone switch or integrated with the user interface board.

Panel partially lit, won't start: control board

Less common than door switch or thermal fuse. Symptoms: random panel behavior (some buttons work, some don't), display flickers, dryer randomly powers off mid-cycle in the past, then finally won't start. Control board replacement runs $345 to $525. We test the board's input and output signals before quoting because boards are the most expensive part on the dryer.

Gas dryer specific: thermal cutoff plus high-limit thermostat

On gas dryers, an additional safety cutoff exists. When tripped, it kills the start circuit similarly to the thermal fuse. We test it during the standard won't-start diagnostic on gas models.

Diagnostic order

How we diagnose won't-start in 20 to 30 minutes.

  1. Power confirmation. Multimeter at the wall outlet for 240V (electric) or 120V (gas dryer plus 240V if applicable). Confirms external power is good before opening the cabinet.
  2. Door switch test. With dryer power on, multimeter at the door switch terminals. Door closed should show continuity. No continuity means the switch failed.
  3. Thermal fuse test. Multimeter at the fuse leads with power off. Open circuit means blown.
  4. Start switch test. Multimeter at the start switch terminals while pressing start. Continuity should close briefly.
  5. Control board input verification. Voltage check at the board's door-closed input and start-button input. Confirms whether the board is receiving signals or whether it's the board that's failing to act on them.
  6. Control board output test. Voltage check at the board's motor relay output when start is pressed. No output means the board is failed.

Once the failed component is identified, we replace it and run a no-load start test plus a short heat-cycle test to confirm the dryer fully boots. The whole repair typically runs 45 to 75 minutes.

Brand notes

Won't-start patterns by brand.

  • Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid (Whirlpool family). Thermal fuse wired in series with motor, so fuse failures present as won't-start. Door switch and thermal fuse are the dominant won't-start suspects on this platform.
  • GE. Door switch dominant. GE control boards have a year 8 to 12 failure pattern that's slightly more visible than other brands.
  • Samsung. DV series user interface boards are sensitive to LA humidity in coastal areas. Year 6+ Samsung dryers occasionally need UI board replacement when buttons stop registering.
  • LG. SmartThinQ models have a user interface failure pattern at year 7 to 10 typical. Door switch is still the most common cause.
  • Electrolux, Frigidaire (Electrolux family). Door switch and start switch dominant. Control boards are reliable on this platform.
  • Bosch. European architecture. Door interlock is more elaborate than US-market brands. Diagnostic is similar in principle but parts platforms differ.
  • Miele, Thermador. Premium tier. Won't-start failures are rare and almost always trace to door switch. Parts cost more but availability is solid.
  • Speed Queen. Built tougher. Won't-start calls usually trace to external power issues (breaker, outlet, cord) rather than internal component failures.

FAQ

Dryer won't-start questions.

I press start and nothing happens. What's the most common cause?

On most dryers, the dominant won't-start cause is a failed door switch (year 4 to 8 typical). The door switch is a safety interlock that prevents the dryer from running when the door is open. When it fails, the control board reads the door as open even when it's shut, and the dryer refuses to start. Replacement runs $125 to $185. Second-most-common is a blown thermal fuse, which on some brands kills the start circuit entirely.

The dryer panel lights up but pressing start does nothing. Is it the start switch?

Possibly, but more often it's the door switch. If panel lights work, you have power and the control board is alive. The most common reason a live panel won't start a cycle is a door switch that's failing intermittently. We test it with a multimeter at the diagnostic visit. The actual start button (membrane or push button) does fail occasionally, especially on dryers with touchpad controls year 8+, but it's a less frequent cause than door switch.

The dryer is completely dead — no lights, no display. Is it the dryer or the breaker?

Check the breaker first. Electric dryers run on a 240V breaker (typically a double-pole 30 amp). Half-tripped breakers can kill the dryer entirely or kill just the heating circuit. If the breaker is fine, the next suspect is the power cord or the wall outlet. We check the outlet voltage with a multimeter at the diagnostic visit. Internal dryer power supply failures (control board, transformer) are less common than external power issues.

Why does my thermal fuse blowing kill the start circuit?

On most Whirlpool, GE, and Maytag dryers, the thermal fuse is wired in series with the motor circuit. When it blows, the entire dryer goes dead, not just the heat. So a thermal fuse failure can present as a won't-start call, not a no-heat call. We test the fuse on every won't-start diagnostic. And if the fuse is blown, we always inspect the vent before replacing it (a fuse replaced without clearing the vent will blow again).

What's the typical cost?

Door switch replacement (most common won't-start repair): $125 to $185. Thermal fuse plus vent inspection: $145 to $245. Start switch or membrane keypad: $145 to $245. Control board replacement: $345 to $525 (parts cost varies by brand). Power cord replacement: $85 to $145. The $89 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair.

Should I just replace the dryer?

Mid-tier dryer (under $700 retail) at year 12+ with control board failure: replacement is often the right call. Door switch, thermal fuse, or start switch failures almost always favor repair regardless of age because parts and labor are inexpensive. Premium tier (Miele, Bosch, LG WashTower, Samsung Bespoke) at any age strongly favors repair because replacement runs $1,500 to $3,000+.

What's your warranty?

Ninety days SDAR labor and parts warranty on the work we perform. If the same component fails within 90 days, we replace it free. BHGS #A49573 and BBB A+ accredited. EPA 608 Universal #1346255700410.
