02 · The LG linear compressor
The known issue — and the warranty that still helps.
LG's linear compressors in French-door and side-by-side refrigerators built from 2014 to 2017 had a widely documented no-cooling defect. It led to a class-action settlement — Bentley/Sosenko v. LG Electronics USA, given final approval in December 2020, covering more than 1.5 million consumers with cash relief and a warranty extension. Two things to know about that:
The settlement's claim window is closed
The settlement was finalized years ago and its deadline to file has long passed, so there's no settlement claim to submit now. What it does confirm is that the compressor defect was real and widespread — not something you caused or did wrong.
LG's 10-year compressor warranty is separate — and still worth checking
Distinct from the settlement, LG's manufacturer warranty covers the linear/inverter compressor for 10 years on parts. So if your LG was built roughly 2014–2022 and the compressor has failed, the compressor part itself may be free under that warranty. You'd still pay diagnosis and labor, but the expensive part can be no-charge. Check your original purchase date and model number — our techs verify the date and confirm it's actually the compressor (not the fan or board) before quoting, so you claim the warranty part when it applies.
03 · Why an LG stops cooling
The causes, in the order our techs check them.
Dirty condenser coils (check first)
Coils caked in dust and pet hair can't shed the heat the compressor pulls out, so the fridge slowly loses cooling. It's the most common homeowner-fixable cause, and it matters more in an LA summer when the kitchen runs hot.
Evaporator fan — "freezer cold, fridge warm"
The evaporator fan blows cold air from the freezer coil up into the fridge. When it fails or frost jams it, the freezer stays cold but the fridge warms. A common, fixable fault, and a tech job inside the cabinet.
Linear compressor / sealed system
If the compressor runs but doesn't cool (or won't start), the sealed system is the fault — see the warranty section above, since the part may be covered. Diagnosing it needs gauges and is tech-only.
Defrost system iced over
A failed defrost heater, sensor, or control lets frost build on the evaporator until air can't pass, and cooling drops off. The tell is a wall of frost behind the freezer's back panel.
Thermistor or control board

04 · What you can safely check
Try these before the food is at risk.
- Vacuum the condenser coils. Behind the rear panel or under a front kick-plate. This alone fixes a lot of gradual no-cool cases.
- Clear the interior vents. Make sure food isn't blocking the vents between the freezer and fridge sections.
- Check the door seal and setting. Confirm the doors seal fully and the temperature is set correctly (not bumped warm).
- Give it room and a power-cycle. Pull the fridge a few inches off the wall so it can shed heat, then unplug it for a minute and restart.
- Watch for improvement over a few hours, but don't wait past the food-safety window if it's clearly warm inside.
Where to stop: coils, vents, seal, temperature, and a power-cycle are safe. Do not open the sealed refrigeration system, test the compressor or start relay, or replace the control board — those carry shock and refrigerant risks and are our techs' work.
05 · Heat-wave food safety — when to call today
A warm fridge is a clock. Here are the numbers.
A refrigerator that's stopped cooling is a race against the clock, and in an LA heat wave that clock runs faster. Per USDA and FDA guidance:
- Refrigerator: about 4 hours of safe food with the door kept closed.
- Freezer: roughly 48 hours full, 24 hours half-full, if the door stays shut.
- Above 40°F for 2 hours or more → discard it. That covers meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, milk, cut produce, and leftovers.
- When in doubt, throw it out — and never taste food to decide. Frozen food can be safely refrozen only if it still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below.

When the coils are clean, the vents are clear, and the LG still won't cool, the fault is inside — the evaporator fan, the defrost system, a thermistor or board, or the compressor and sealed system. That specific split — a cold freezer with a warm fresh-food section — is the classic evaporator fan failure. When the fan motor fails or frost from a defrost problem jams it, the freezer stays cold but no cold air reaches the fridge.
