About this service
Bosch 800 Series and Benchmark, quiet engineering with real warranty backing.
Bosch refrigeration sits in a specific position in the Southern California market. Not the premium integrated built-in category (that's Sub-Zero territory), not the mass-market category (that's Samsung, LG, Whirlpool), but the mid-to-upper luxury counter-depth and French-door space where the buyer wants genuinely good engineering without paying $12,000+ for a Sub-Zero column. Common choice in Brentwood condos, Santa Monica townhouses, Westwood renovations, and Hollywood Hills estates on the LA side; Newport Beach contemporary remodels, Tustin and Irvine kitchens in OC; Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks builds in Ventura; and Rancho Cucamonga and Temecula contemporary kitchens in the IE, where the kitchen wanted premium appliances but Sub-Zero was outside budget or outside the aesthetic the owner was going for.
What separates Bosch from lower-tier brands for service: genuinely tight build quality and a 5-year limited warranty on the compressor for 800 Series and Benchmark models. Beyond the 1-year full-coverage warranty, the compressor part itself is covered through year 5. We process these warranty claims regularly, it's one of the most impactful cost-savers on Bosch refrigerator service, reducing a $680-$1,280 out-of-warranty compressor job to a $380-$580 labor-only cost.
Most of our Bosch refrigerator calls are 3-to-8-year-old 800 Series units in coastal and near-coastal areas across our service area: Santa Monica, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Venice on the LA side; Newport Beach, Newport Coast, and Laguna Beach in OC. Coastal salt-air affects condenser coil cleaning frequency significantly, we cover this specifically below. Inland calls (Pasadena, Glendale, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Rancho Cucamonga, Temecula wine-country) follow a different maintenance schedule.
Models we service
Bosch refrigerator model families

800 Series side-by-side counter-depth refrigerators, 36" width. Water and ice dispenser on door, dual evaporator design (independent cooling for fresh-food and freezer compartments, reduces odor transfer, a real engineering advantage). Older generation (B22CS30/50) sees more service calls than newer (B22CS80/81) due to aging defrost systems and ice maker modules.
800 Series Bottom-Mount Freezer
B26FT50SNS Β· B26FT70SNS Β· B26FT80SNS Β· B26FT81SNS
Bottom-freezer configuration, 36" counter-depth. Single refrigerator door on top with freezer drawer on bottom. Popular in condos and smaller kitchen footprints across our service area (Wilshire Corridor, Newport Beach high-rises, Long Beach towers, Marina del Rey waterfront) where French-door double-swing requires too much clearance. Same core compressor, evaporator, and defrost architecture as French-door bottom-mount; different door configuration.
800 Series Counter-Depth French Door
B36ET70SNS Β· B36ET71SNS Β· B36IT70NNP Β· B36IT80SNS
Counter-depth French-door with integrated styling. Flush installation with standard cabinet depth for a cleaner aesthetic. Ice and water through the door on most models. Same engine room as B36CL series but different door configuration and ice/water access. B36IT variants are internal-filter models (filter inside refrigerator compartment instead of base grille).
Benchmark Built-In
B18IF800SP Β· B21CL81SNS Β· B36IT71SNS Β· B36BT830NS Β· Benchmark columns
Flagship Benchmark Series built-in refrigerators. Integrated installation with custom cabinet panels, flush with surrounding cabinetry. Competes with Sub-Zero built-in line at a lower price point. Same VitaFreshPro and Home Connect as 800 Series, plus Benchmark-specific features like premium interior lighting, smoother drawer glides, and upgraded control interfaces. Less common across our service area than Sub-Zero but growing in contemporary modernist kitchens (Hollywood Hills, Newport Coast, Westlake Village).
500 Series & 300 Series (Mid-Range)
B11CB50SSS Β· B10CB80NVS Β· B30BB830SS Β· B20CS30SNS
Mid-range Bosch refrigerators. No VitaFreshPro, shorter compressor warranty (3 years vs 5 years on 800/Benchmark), fewer humidity zones. Common in mid-luxury new construction where the developer balanced cost across the kitchen. Service approach identical to 800 Series for fundamental components (compressor, evaporator, control board), just fewer specialty components like humidity sensors.
Model number prefix key: B22 = side-by-side, B26 = bottom-mount single-door fresh, B36 = 36" French-door, B18/B21 = Benchmark column widths, B10/B11 = counter-depth compact (24" or 30"). Second letter: C = counter-depth, I = integrated/built-in, B = built-in bottom-freezer, F = French-door, T = bottom-mount drawer-freezer.
Common failures
The ten things that break on a Bosch refrigerator
1. Refrigerator not cooling, compressor start relay (#1 call)
The single most common Bosch refrigerator call. Start relay tells the compressor to start; when relay fails, compressor never runs, temperature rises. Symptoms: silent refrigerator (normally you'd hear compressor cycling), refrigerator warm, freezer warming, sometimes burning smell if relay shorted. Relay replacement $95-$155, 30-minute job, relay is located on the compressor housing, typically at the base of the unit behind a service panel. Often fails around year 4-8 on 800 Series. If the compressor itself has damage from the failed relay, replacement cost jumps significantly, we test compressor amperage after relay replacement to verify the compressor is intact.
2. Condenser coils dusty, cooling efficiency loss
The fix everyone skips. Condenser coils are at the back or base of the refrigerator and accumulate dust, pet hair, and (along the SoCal coastline) salt residue over 12-24 months. When coils are blocked, the compressor has to work harder to dissipate heat, refrigerator runs warmer, energy use spikes, compressor lifespan shortens. Coastal areas across our service region, Santa Monica, Venice, Pacific Palisades, Malibu on the LA side; Newport Beach, Newport Coast, Laguna Beach in OC, accumulate faster than inland (Pasadena, Westlake Village, Rancho Cucamonga). We recommend condenser cleaning every 4-5 months coastal vs every 6 months inland. Professional cleaning $95 flat; easy DIY with coil brush and vacuum.
3. Freezer cold but refrigerator warm, evaporator fan failure
Classic airflow-imbalance symptom. Evaporator fan (behind freezer back panel) circulates cold air between freezer and refrigerator compartments. When fan fails or ices over, freezer stays cold (where the evaporator coil is) but refrigerator warms (no air circulation to it). Diagnostic: listen, fan should be audible when freezer is running. If silent, fan motor seized or iced over. Fan replacement $285-$385, 60-90 minute job. Alternative cause: frost buildup on evaporator coils blocking airflow, defrost system failure ($245-$385 heater, thermostat, or sensor).
4. Ice maker not working, B36CL80ENS and family
Five-step diagnostic. (1) Check water supply line, kinked or disconnected is common on recent installs. (2) Replace water filter ($45-$85), clogged filter restricts flow, ice maker can't fill. (3) Inspect fill tube for ice blockage, frozen tube prevents water entry, melt and clear (free fix). (4) Test ice maker module, Bosch part 12028493 for B36CL80ENS family. Module failure typically at year 5-7, replacement $245-$345. (5) Water inlet valve solenoid, if valve won't energize, ice maker can't fill regardless of other components, $165-$245 replacement.
5. Water pooling at bottom of refrigerator, defrost drain clog
Defrost drain tube routes melt-water from the evaporator coil area down to the drain pan under the compressor. When the tube clogs (usually with food particles or ice), water backs up and pools in the refrigerator. Fix: pull the refrigerator from the wall, access the back panel near the compressor, locate the drain tube, clear with a brush and warm soapy water. $85 flat drain clearing service on our side, or DIY if you're comfortable pulling the refrigerator and removing back panel. Prevention: wipe spills promptly and avoid leaving food debris that can make it into the drain pathway.
6. VitaFreshPro produce drawer not keeping produce fresh
Three causes in order of probability. (1) Configuration mismatch, leafy greens in the low-humidity drawer, fruits in the high-humidity drawer. Surprisingly common; free diagnostic fix. (2) Humidity sensor drift, sensor reads incorrectly, sets wrong humidity level. Part replacement $125-$185. (3) Drawer seal damaged or dirty, humidity escapes, both drawers trend toward ambient. Seal replacement $85-$145 or free cleaning. We test sensor calibration via Home Connect when available (diagnostic data) before ordering parts.
7. Frost buildup on freezer walls, defrost system failure
Bosch refrigerators are frost-free, visible frost on freezer walls or evaporator coils means the defrost cycle failed. Three components can fail: defrost heater (melts frost during cycle, tests open or shorted, $245-$345), defrost thermostat (tells heater to turn on/off, $95-$145), or defrost timer/sensor (triggers cycle, $145-$225). On 800 Series, the defrost control is integrated into the main control board on some model years, if all three discrete components test good and frost persists, control board ($480-$680) is the failure.
8. Unusual noises, compressor, fan, or ice in fan blade
Diagnostic by sound type. (1) Loud humming or buzzing, compressor under strain, usually early-stage start relay or compressor bearing. (2) Rattling or clicking, fan blade hitting ice buildup (common in cold LA winters when defrost lagged), free fix with defrost and inspection. (3) High-pitched whine, fan motor bearing wear, $285-$385 motor replacement. (4) Gurgling or hissing, normal refrigerant movement, not a repair concern. (5) Clicking from start relay area, relay trying to engage and failing, $95-$155 replacement.
9. Refrigerant leak, oily residue around compressor
Serious but uncommon on Bosch (better build quality than lower-tier brands). Signatures: oily residue around compressor housing or at sealed-system connection points, refrigerator not cooling despite compressor running, audible hissing (refrigerant escape). Requires EPA 608 certified sealed-system service, all our technicians certified. Leak repair cost varies by location: evaporator leak (most common, lower refrigerant charge requirement) $680-$980; condenser or compressor leak $880-$1,280; line-set leak $780-$1,080. We identify exact leak location, repair or replace affected component, evacuate system, and recharge with correct refrigerant quantity.
10. Control board failure, display blank or erratic
Main control board failures are rare on Bosch (better engineering than most) but occur on 8+ year units. Symptoms: display blank, buttons unresponsive, temperature settings don't hold, random cycling. Before ordering a $480-$680 board, we verify: power supply to the board (5V logic voltage), ribbon cable connections to the user interface, and sensor inputs (temperature sensors can drift and send bad data to an intact board). About 20% of suspected board failures resolve with cable reseating or sensor replacement at much lower cost.
Southern California context
Coastal salt-air and Bosch condenser coil maintenance
LA coastal neighborhoods, Santa Monica, Venice, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, deal with salt-air infiltration that affects appliance components faster than inland areas. For refrigerators specifically, salt-air accelerates condenser coil contamination: salt mixes with dust and pet hair to form a denser, more heat-trapping layer than inland dust alone.
Practical maintenance schedule difference: coastal Bosch refrigerators need condenser coil cleaning every 4-5 months; inland (Pasadena, Glendale, Calabasas, Burbank) every 6 months is adequate. Salt residue on copper condenser tubing can also cause microscopic pitting over years, we inspect for this during service visits on 5+ year old coastal units and recommend earlier replacement if pitting is significant.
For 800 Series units specifically, the compressor is located at the base of the unit with air intake on the bottom or back grille. Coastal installations should keep the floor area around the refrigerator free of dust buildup (monthly vacuuming under the toe kick) and ensure the back clearance is adequate for airflow. We inspect compressor cooling airflow during every service call on coastal Bosch units.
Warranty awareness
Bosch 800 Series and Benchmark 5-year compressor warranty
Here's the coverage structure most owners don't realize they have:
Year 1, full warranty. All parts, all labor covered by Bosch. Call Bosch authorized dispatch at 1-800-944-2904 for free service.
Years 2-5, compressor-part warranty only. The compressor itself is covered as a part by Bosch at no cost to you. You pay labor, we process the Bosch warranty claim for the part. Typical cost: $380-$580 for labor, vs $680-$1,280 out-of-warranty. Substantial savings on what's usually the highest-cost refrigerator repair.
Year 6+, out of warranty. All costs owner's responsibility. Compressor replacement $680-$1,280 full cost.
Before any major repair, we verify your model's warranty applicability (not all 800/Benchmark years carry 5-year coverage, some early model years were 2 or 3 years). Bring original receipt or proof of purchase. If warranty applies, we coordinate the Bosch part claim and reduce your cost substantially. This is one of the most impactful ROI items in Bosch refrigerator service, a $580 labor cost vs a $1,100 full-replacement cost is a real savings when the warranty clock is on your side.
