Hoshizaki ice machines
The dominant US commercial ice machine brand. Approximately 50% market share.
Hoshizaki dominates the US commercial ice machine market: approximately 40 to 50 percent market share by units sold. The combination of Japanese engineering precision, exceptional reliability, and dominant brand recognition in hospitality means our techs find Hoshizaki ice machines in most LA-area bars, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and premium beverage operations.
We service the entire Hoshizaki ice machine lineup across LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. KM-Edge cube ice machines are the flagship: KM-340MAJ small undercounter, KM-650MAJ mid-size (the most-installed Hoshizaki cube across SoCal), KM-901MAJ larger modular, KM-1340MAJ and KM-1601MAJ for high-volume operations, KM-2200SR top of line. F-Series flake ice dominates the flake market: F-450MAH (air-cooled), F-801MWH (water-cooled), F-1002MAH (large), F-2000MWJ (extra-large). DCM Cubelet for chewable ice applications (DCM-270BAH, DCM-500BAH). FS Sliver Nugget is Hoshizaki's answer to Scotsman and Manitowoc nugget. DBF and DM dispenser series for hospitality self-serve.
Important disambiguation: Hoshizaki Corporation also makes commercial refrigeration (reach-ins, prep tables, undercounter), which is a separate equipment line with its own parts catalog and service track. For Hoshizaki commercial refrigeration repair, see our separate Hoshizaki refrigeration page. This page covers Hoshizaki ice machines only.
EPA 608 Universal plus R-290 certification (post-2020 Hoshizaki ice machines transitioning to R-290 hydrocarbon refrigerant). BHGS #A49573. BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7.
Lineup and architecture
Hoshizaki ice machine lineup and what fails on each.
Five distinct product lines, each with a specific application profile and a distinct failure tree. We diagnose to the line, not just to the brand.
KM-Edge Cube Ice Machines (Flagship)
The KM-Edge is Hoshizaki's signature cube ice line. Distinctive cell-and-curtain evaporator design, CycleSaver energy-efficient operation, H-Guard Plus antimicrobial evaporator coating, EverCheck built-in diagnostics. KM-340MAJ (340 lb/day undercounter), KM-650MAJ (650 lb/day mid-size, the most-popular Hoshizaki cube in our service mix), KM-901MAJ (900 lb/day large undercounter or modular), KM-1340MAJ plus KM-1601MAJ plus KM-2200SR for high-volume operations. Air-cooled (-A), water-cooled (MWJ), remote-condensed (MRJ) variants.
Common KM-Edge failures by year:
- Year 2 to 4: scale buildup on cell evaporator. H-Guard Plus antimicrobial coating slows biological growth but doesn't prevent calcium and magnesium scale. Cleaning resolves.
- Year 6 to 9: water inlet pump failure (cell-and-curtain architecture has a water pump distinct from Manitowoc and Scotsman designs).
- Year 7 to 10: cell sensor drift, affecting harvest cycle timing.
- Year 7 to 10: hot gas valve, controlling harvest cycle release.
- Year 10+: EverCheck diagnostic system control board end-of-life.
F-Series Flake Ice (Dominant in Flake Market)
F-450MAH-C (450 lb/day air-cooled), F-801MWH (800 lb/day water-cooled), F-1002MAH (1,000+ lb/day large), F-2000MWJ (2,000 lb/day extra-large). Common in sushi restaurants (Sawtelle and Little Tokyo are full of these), fishmongers, grocery produce displays, hospital cafeterias.
Common F-Series failures:
- Year 6 to 9: auger gear reducer wear (most common F-Series failure).
- Year 8 to 12: auger motor failure.
- Year 5 to 7: drive shaft seal wear.
- Year 3 to 5: scale buildup on evaporator drum interior.
DCM Cubelet (Chewable Ice)
Hoshizaki's chewable ice line, distinct architecture from cube and flake. DCM-270BAH (270 lb/day), DCM-500BAH (500 lb/day). Common in healthcare and premium beverage applications. Cubelet ice is small cylindrical, chewable, distinct from Scotsman or Manitowoc nugget formats.
FS Sliver Nugget
Hoshizaki's answer to Scotsman Brilliance and Manitowoc R-Series nugget ice. FS-1000MWH (1,000 lb/day). Newer line, growing market share in hospitality. Same general nugget application but Hoshizaki-specific architecture.
DBF / DM Dispenser Series
Hospitality dispensers. Hotel hallways, healthcare cafeterias. DBF-25CH (counter-top), DM-200B-LP (under-counter). We service the ice side of these dispensers. Some installations integrate with beverage dispensing equipment from other manufacturers (Cornelius, Lancer), which is a separate trade.
Common scenarios
Top Hoshizaki ice machine repairs in our 5-county territory.
In rough order of frequency on Hoshizaki ice machine service calls:
- Cleaning service (preventive). Hoshizaki H-Guard Plus extends cleaning intervals but doesn't eliminate them. CleanCycle 24 reminder system tells you when. $200 to $340 service.
- Scale-driven low ice production. Same root cause across brands. Cleaning resolves about 80% of "low production" calls at no parts cost.
- Water inlet pump replacement (KM-Edge cell-and-curtain). Hoshizaki-specific component, different from Manitowoc and Scotsman. $340 to $540.
- Auger gear reducer (F-Series flake). Heavy mechanical wear at year 6 to 9. $580 to $880.
- EverCheck diagnostic plus targeted repair. Read codes correctly first, then quote.
- Hot gas valve replacement. Harvest cycle issues on KM-Edge.
- Cell sensor (KM-Edge). Harvest timing.
- Refrigerant leak repair. EPA 608 leak repair before recharge. R-290 systems require R-290 certification.
- Condenser fan motor (air-cooled units). Typical 4 to 7 year life.
- Control board replacement (10+ year units). Modern diagnostic system board failure rare but happens at end of life.
Real repairs
Composite stories from the route.
Five Hoshizaki ice machine jobs from the past 90 days. Models, symptoms, diagnosis, parts, time, total. Names omitted; the technical scenarios are typical of what we see weekly.
Sushi restaurant, Sawtelle. Hoshizaki KM-650MAJ-A undercounter cube, 7 years old, R-404A.
Ice production at 60% capacity. Diagnosed: scale buildup on cell evaporator plus water inlet pump diaphragm degraded. EverCheck diagnostic confirmed pump issue. Cleaned evaporator (H-Guard Plus coating still intact, just calcium and magnesium scale buildup), replaced water inlet pump. Total: $120 plus $280 cleaning plus $385 pump plus $290 labor = $1,075. KM-650MAJ at year 7 is on the typical service curve.
Bar, Beverly Hills. Hoshizaki KM-901MAJ-A modular cube plus 400 lb bin, 9 years old.
Refrigerant leak. Machine had been needing top-off every 4 months. Owner had been told by another shop "just refill it" (that's an EPA 608 violation). We diagnosed the leak with electronic detector: small leak at the evaporator brazed joint. Brazed repair, evacuated to 500 microns, recharged R-404A to spec. Now compliant with EPA 608 leak-repair-before-recharge regulation. Total: $120 plus $480 refrigerant plus $720 labor plus leak detection = $1,320.
Fishmonger, Marina del Rey. Hoshizaki F-801MWH water-cooled flake, 6 years old.
Auger noise, flake quality degraded to slush. Diagnosed: gear reducer wear (typical 6 to 9 year life on heavy-use flake operations). Replaced gear reducer with Hoshizaki OEM via Peachtree City distribution. Total: $120 plus $580 part plus 2.5 hours = $920. F-801 expected to run another 5 to 7 years on the new reducer.
Hospital cafeteria, Pasadena. Hoshizaki DCM-500BAH Cubelet, 8 years old.
Cubelet quality dropped to slush. Diagnosed: refrigerant low plus auger speed sensor drift. EPA 608 leak detection found minor seasonal loss confirmed (no active leak). Recharged 4 oz R-404A plus replaced sensor. Total: $120 plus $180 refrigerant plus $290 sensor plus 1.5 hours = $590. Cubelet quality back to spec, healthcare facility back in service same day.
Hotel ice machine, Santa Monica. Hoshizaki KM-1340MAJ-A large modular, 10 years old, R-404A.
Control board EverCheck displayed multiple error codes. Diagnosed: control board end-of-life (10-year typical life on diagnostic boards). Replaced board (Hoshizaki OEM via Peachtree City, 5-day standard ship). Total: $120 plus $620 board plus $480 labor across 2 visits = $1,220. Hotel ice machine back online for the weekend rush.

Why operators choose us for Hoshizaki
What separates our Hoshizaki ice machine service.
- CycleSaver plus cell-and-curtain architecture expertise. Hoshizaki KM-Edge has a water inlet pump (different from Manitowoc and Scotsman designs). We know the difference, and we don't misdiagnose Hoshizaki cycle times against the wrong baseline.
- EverCheck diagnostic system. Read codes correctly the first time. Hoshizaki's built-in diagnostic gives precise fault information when interpreted properly; techs trained only on Manitowoc miss things.
- F-Series auger drive expertise. Flake-specific mechanical wear (gear reducer, motor, drive shaft seals) follows Hoshizaki-specific timelines.
- EPA 608 plus R-290 certification. Required for current production with hydrocarbon refrigerant. Some shops quote R-290 work without holding the certification, which is both a regulatory and safety issue.
- Peachtree City parts network access. Standard 4 to 7 day ship from Hoshizaki America. Expedited available for emergency operations.
- Japanese restaurant and sushi bar service expertise. Sawtelle and Little Tokyo F-Series flake operations are core to our route. We respond fast on these because the equipment is mission-critical for sushi service.
- Disambiguation between Hoshizaki ice and Hoshizaki refrigeration. Same parent brand, separate equipment lines, separate parts catalogs. We don't mix them up, and we tell customers which page applies.
- 24/7 phone answering, no emergency surcharge. $120 anytime.
- BHGS #A49573 plus BBB A+. Verifiable with the state and the bureau.
- Same-day across LA, Orange County, Ventura. Next-day for Rancho Cucamonga and Temecula.
FAQ
Hoshizaki ice machine repair questions.
Is Hoshizaki worth the premium price for ice machines?
For high-volume operations, yes. Hoshizaki has 12 to 15 year typical service life vs 8 to 12 for mid-tier brands. CycleSaver design means lower water and energy costs over operational life. H-Guard Plus antimicrobial coating extends cleaning intervals. Per-year cost of ownership often runs lower despite higher upfront purchase price. For low-volume operations (small cafΓ©s, occasional use), a mid-tier brand may pencil out better. We'll tell you straight which math applies to your operation.
What's the difference between KM-Edge cube, F-Series flake, DCM Cubelet, and FS Sliver Nugget?
Different ice types with different applications. KM-Edge cube: bars, restaurants, hotels, general beverage use. F-Series flake: produce display, seafood, medical applications, sushi service. DCM Cubelet: chewable ice for healthcare and premium beverage operations. FS Sliver Nugget: Hoshizaki's nugget line for hospitality, competing with Scotsman Brilliance and Manitowoc R-Series. We service all four lines with the same diagnostic baseline plus product-specific knowledge.
Do you service all KM-Edge sizes from KM-340MAJ undercounter to KM-2200SR large modular?
Yes. Full KM-Edge line, plus all configurations: air-cooled (-A), water-cooled (MWJ), remote-condensed (MRJ). The diagnostic approach is consistent across sizes; what changes is the parts cost (KM-340MAJ undercounter parts are smaller and cheaper than KM-2200SR modular parts) and the total turn time on parts not stocked on the van.
My Hoshizaki is leaking refrigerant slowly. Can I just keep refilling it?
No. Any contractor telling you that is violating EPA 608 Universal (#1346255700410). Section 608 of the Clean Air Act requires leak repair before recharge on systems above certain charge thresholds. Continuous recharge without leak repair is a federal violation. We identify the leak with electronic detector or UV dye, repair the leak, evacuate the system to 500 microns, and recharge to spec. The EPA penalty for venting refrigerant is more than the cost of doing the repair correctly.
What's CycleSaver, and does it affect repair?
CycleSaver is Hoshizaki's energy-efficient evaporator design. It uses less water and energy per pound of ice than competing manufacturers. CycleSaver doesn't fundamentally change repair patterns, but it does mean some Hoshizaki diagnostic readings differ from Manitowoc and Scotsman cycle times and water-use patterns. Techs who only know Manitowoc-style ice machines sometimes misread Hoshizaki diagnostic readings. We know the differences.
Are Hoshizaki ice machines and Hoshizaki refrigeration the same brand?
Same parent company (Hoshizaki Corporation, headquartered in Toyoake, Japan), but they're different equipment categories with separate parts catalogs and separate service tracks. This page covers Hoshizaki ice machines only. For Hoshizaki commercial refrigeration repair (reach-in coolers and freezers, prep tables, undercounter), see our separate Hoshizaki refrigeration page.
What's your warranty on Hoshizaki repairs?
Ninety days SDAR labor and parts warranty on the work we perform. Hoshizaki component warranties are processed separately through the Hoshizaki America service network in Peachtree City, Georgia. We help process warranty claims when applicable so you don't pay for parts that should be free. BHGS #A49573 and BBB A+ accredited.
