01 · Built-in filter systems we service
Brand-specific architectures.
Frymaster FilterQuick (industry-dominant in QSR chains)
Frymaster's FilterQuick is the integrated filter system on most current Frymaster RE Series and FilterQuick units. Pump-driven filter cycle: oil discharges from the vat through a filter pan with replaceable paper, then returns to the vat post-filtration. Digital controller with diagnostic codes. We see this brand in chain QSRs (McDonald's, Burger King, Carl's Jr., KFC partnerships) and high-volume independent restaurants. Common service items: pump seal year 4-7, pump motor year 5-8, filter paper jamming from operator error, microswitch on pan position, return-side check valve, control board faults.
Pitco filter drawer (built into Solstice and Solstice Supreme)
Pitco's filter drawer is integrated into the cabinet base on Solstice and Solstice Supreme open-vat fryers. Pump-driven cycle similar to FilterQuick architecture but with brand-specific control panel layout and pan design. Common service items match the FilterQuick pattern: pump seal year 4-7, pump motor year 5-8, filter paper installation issues, drawer position microswitch.
Henny Penny filter pump (pressure fryer)
Henny Penny 600 series pressure fryers have integrated filter systems specific to pressure-fryer architecture. Filter cycle is interlocked with the pressure cycle so that filtering can only occur with the cooking chamber depressurized. Common service items: pump seal failure (year 5-8 typical for the heavier-duty pressure-fryer pump), filter hose deterioration (more frequent than open-vat due to pressure-cycle stress), pressure release interlock fault.
Vulcan integrated filtration (LG and CE Series)
Some Vulcan LG (gas) and CE (electric) units include integrated filtration. Less feature-dense than Frymaster FilterQuick but reliable. Common service items: pump seal, hose, filter pan condition.
02 · Common filter system failures
Six failure modes ordered by frequency.
1. Filter paper installation error (about 15-20% of calls, no parts)
Filter paper folded incorrectly, installed upside-down, or torn during installation blocks the pump intake or causes excessive pressure drop. Symptom: pump runs but filter cycle aborts, system displays error, oil doesn't fully filter or doesn't return. Resolution: re-install paper per the manufacturer's spec, retest. We train operator staff on correct installation if recurring. About 15-20% of filter calls resolve at $200-260 with paper re-installation, no parts.
2. Pump seal failure (year 4-7 typical)
The pump seal between motor shaft and pump body fails from continuous heat exposure and thermal cycling. Symptom: oil leaking from the pump area, reduced pump capacity (slow filter cycle, incomplete return), or pump motor seizing if oil ingresses into the bearing. Replacement runs $360-540 all-in. We catch this often during quarterly PM before it becomes an emergency.
3. Pump motor failure (year 5-8 typical)
The pump motor wears from duty-cycle loading and heat exposure over years. Symptom: motor doesn't run when the filter cycle starts, motor runs but produces no flow (impeller issue), motor runs intermittently or trips overload. Diagnostic with multimeter on motor windings and visual on impeller. Replacement runs $640-920 all-in. Year 5-8 is typical replacement window across the major brands.
4. Filter hose deterioration (year 6-9)
The flexible hoses connecting pump to filter pan and pan to vat-return develop cracks, kinks, or fitting leaks over time. Symptom: oil leaking under the filter unit, reduced flow, error code from pressure drop. Replacement runs $260-380 typical.
5. Microswitch on filter pan position
Filter systems include a microswitch detecting whether the filter pan is fully seated; if not seated, the system aborts the filter cycle (safety + cleanliness). Microswitch failures present as system refusing to filter even with the pan in place. Replacement runs $200-340.
6. Control board fault
The digital controller managing filter cycle timing, pump operation, and error display can fail at year 8+ from accumulated thermal cycling. Symptom: error codes that don't match observable system condition, system locks in an error state, controller display unresponsive. Replacement runs $640-920 depending on brand and model. Less common than the mechanical failures above; we check easier causes first.

06 · FAQ
Questions we hear on filter system calls.
Why does my Frymaster FilterQuick keep showing 'filter error'?
Frymaster FilterQuick uses an integrated filter pump and a digital controller; the system displays an error code when something interrupts the normal filter cycle. Common causes ranked by frequency: (1) filter paper installed wrong (folded incorrectly, blocking pump intake), (2) pump motor failed, (3) pump seal leaking, causing pressure loss, (4) filter pan not seated properly (microswitch detects pan position; if not seated, system aborts), (5) control board fault. We diagnose with the Frymaster service manual and bring common parts on the van.
How often should the filter system pump be replaced?
Filter pump motors run a duty cycle of 1-3 minutes per filter cycle, several times a day, in a hot oil environment with thermal cycling. Year 5-8 is typical replacement window for most built-in filter pumps (Frymaster FilterQuick, Pitco filter drawer, Henny Penny filter pump). Pump seals (which fail before the motor itself) at year 4-7 typical. Pump motor replacement runs $640-920 typical all-in including the part. Pump seal replacement (without full motor swap) $360-540.
Can I run the fryer without the built-in filter?
Short-term yes, with caveats. The fryer's heating function operates independently of the filter system, so the fryer will cook normally while the filter is down. The caveat: oil quality degrades faster without daily filtering, which means you'll be replacing oil more frequently and possibly seeing slow recovery times within a week of operating without filtering. Restaurants typically can't afford to operate more than 2-3 days without filtering on a high-volume fryer. We respond same-day on filter system service for that reason.
What's the difference between built-in filtration and external filter machines?
Built-in filtration (Frymaster FilterQuick, Pitco filter drawer integrated into the fryer cabinet, Henny Penny pressure-fryer filter system) uses a filter pump and pan housed within the fryer itself. External filter machines (FryFilter, Filtaclean, Restaurant Technologies oil management service) are standalone units rolled up to each fryer for daily filtering. We service both. Built-in systems are more convenient for daily filtering; external machines have advantages for multi-fryer kitchens that want a single filter for the whole battery. Service approach is similar: diagnose pump, seals, hoses, electrical.
What does a typical filter system repair cost?
Diagnostic is $120, applied to repair. Common repairs: filter paper jam clearing + pump test (no parts) $200-260; pump seal replacement $360-540; pump motor replacement $640-920; filter hose replacement $260-380; filter pan microswitch $200-340; control board fault diagnosis $440-680 if board replacement is needed. Most filter system calls resolve at $360-680 all-in. Pump motor replacement is the high end at year 5-8.
My fryer pumps oil out but won't pump it back in.
Common Frymaster FilterQuick symptom that points to a specific failure: the discharge pump runs but the return cycle fails, leaving the fryer empty after a filter attempt. Three usual causes. (1) Filter paper saturated or folded incorrectly, blocking return flow. Replace paper, fold per Frymaster spec, retest. (2) Return-side hose kinked or hose check valve stuck, restricting return flow. (3) Pump capacity reduced (early-stage pump failure that still discharges but can't pull return through the filter resistance). We diagnose by observing the cycle and measuring pump differential.
Do you do PM contracts for filter systems?
Yes. High-volume restaurant fryers benefit from quarterly preventive maintenance on the built-in filter system: pump motor inspection, seal condition check, hose inspection, microswitch test, control board firmware check (where applicable). Quarterly PM costs less than a single emergency filter call and prevents most of the unscheduled service we see. Quote-based depending on the number of fryers and the brand mix.
