02 · Component breakdown
What we service across the kitchen.
Side Burners (Lynx, Fire Magic, DCS, Twin Eagles, Wolf Outdoor, Hestan, Alfresco, Kalamazoo)
Side burners on built-in outdoor kitchens fail like residential cooktops. Orifice blocked from cooking spillover, igniter clicks but no spark (battery), gas regulator drift at the supply line. We see Lynx side burners and sear stations most often (LSB1-1, LSB2-1, LCB1-1 ProSear). Common failure: the burner valve seizes after long inactive periods. Winter unused, then summer comes and won't open. Disassemble, clean, lubricate, retest. $200 to $380 typical.
Power burners (Lynx ProSear, Fire Magic Echelon Power Burner, Twin Eagles 27,000 BTU side) run hot enough that the burner head itself burns out at 5 to 7 years. Replacement runs $400 to $700 depending on brand.
Warming Drawers (Wolf WWD30, Lynx LWD30, DCS WD30, Twin Eagles TEWD30)
Warming drawer failures fall into three buckets. (1) Heating element failure: element open-circuits, drawer doesn't heat. $250 to $380 element plus labor. (2) Controller board failure: drawer runs but won't hold setpoint. $400 to $650 controller plus labor. (3) Drawer slide mechanism: runners corrode in marine environments, drawer doesn't open smoothly. $180 to $280 hardware plus labor.
Wolf WWD30 outdoor uses the same controller architecture as the indoor Wolf warming drawer (we know this brand inside and out). Lynx LWD30 has a more straightforward control system, easier diagnosis.
Outdoor Refrigerators & Beverage Centers
Sub-Zero outdoor 424 series, U-Line outdoor, Perlick HP24 / HP15, Lynx LM24REFL, Hestan GFR24, True Residential outdoor, Viking outdoor, Wolf Outdoor. Outdoor-rated refrigerators are not just regular fridges in a cabinet. They have sealed-system specs, gasket compounds, and condenser placements built for high ambient temps and humidity swings. EPA 608 required for any refrigerant work, and we have it.
Common failures we see, in order:
- Condenser fan motor seized at 4 to 7 years. Outdoor units accumulate dust load faster than indoor. Replacement $280 to $450 depending on brand.
- Door gasket compressed flat. Won't seal in summer heat. Replacement $180 to $340.
- Evaporator drain blocked. Water pools, freezes, blocks airflow. Cleaning plus drain heater check.
- Compressor short-cycling on heat. Usually condenser coil fouled. Cleaning solves 60% of these without parts.
- Compressor failure at 8 to 12 years. Replacement $1,200 to $2,200. At this price, replace-vs-repair becomes a real conversation.
Outdoor Ice Makers (Lynx LM-15, Hestan GICR15, Sub-Zero IC-15RE, U-Line BI-2115, Scotsman SCN60 outdoor)
Outdoor ice makers fail more often than indoor. Heat load plus humidity plus dust. Common: water inlet valve at the wall (calcium buildup in SoCal hard water), drain pump (debris from condenser drip), sensor fouling. Most repairs $300 to $650. The Scotsman SCN60 outdoor specifically: we see condenser coil fouling at the 3-year mark. Clean it, runs another 4 years easy.
Pizza Ovens, Outdoor Gas (Mugnaini gas, Forno Bravo gas, Alfresco AXEPZA, Lynx LPZA, Kalamazoo Outdoor Pizza)
Gas-fired outdoor pizza ovens, we service these. Most common: regulator failure (the high-BTU output stresses the regulator), igniter sequence failure on the dual-burner Mugnaini and Forno Bravo gas conversions, deck stone crack from thermal shock (replacement $150 to $340).
We don't service wood-fired pizza ovens (chimney/masonry trade) or pellet ovens. Gas-fired only.
Vent Hoods (Vent-A-Hood outdoor B100 / B200, Best WCB6, Trade-Wind L7242, custom outdoor hoods)
Outdoor vent hood failures: blower motor (4 to 8 years), light fixture corrosion (LED outdoor-rated still fails near salt water in 5 to 7 years), control switch pitting. Vent-A-Hood B-series uses the same blower architecture as indoor. Parts available, repair straightforward.
Outdoor Sink Hardware
We don't do plumbing, that's a different trade. We do replace failed faucet hardware (the fixture itself, not the supply lines) when it's part of a larger outdoor kitchen service call. Outdoor-rated faucets corrode at 7 to 12 years even on premium brands. We can swap a faucet during a kitchen service visit if you have the replacement on hand.
Integration Failures
Sometimes the issue isn't a single component. We've diagnosed:
- Three appliances simultaneously underperforming. Root cause was gas pressure drop at the regulator serving the whole kitchen (low pressure = poor combustion across all burners + pilot light issues on warming drawer + ice maker cycling problems).
- Multiple electrical components failing. Root cause was outdoor receptacle GFCI tripping intermittently from water intrusion, leaving warming drawer and ice maker on partial power.
- Refrigerator + ice maker both running warm. Both shared a condensate drain line that had clogged.
These multi-component diagnoses are where SDAR earns the higher service call. Single-component shops would charge for three visits.
