03 · The causes, in order
Five causes, most common first.
1. Clogged lower filter
The removable filter in the tub floor packs with food, glass grit, and grease. A partial clog slows the drain until F9E1 trips; a full one stops it. Twist it out, rinse, clear the sump below.
2. Drain hose loop too low, kinked, or clogged
The single most Maytag-specific cause: the drain hose must loop up high before dropping to the drain. A low or flat loop siphons sink water back and pools it. Check behind the unit and re-route into a high loop.
3. Disposal knockout plug (new install)
A new garbage disposal ships with a solid plug sealing the dishwasher drain port. If it wasn't punched out, the dishwasher can't drain. The answer when a Maytag stops draining right after disposal work.
4. Blocked air gap (common in California)

Five safe steps before you call.
- Scoop the standing water with a cup and sponge so you can reach the filter.
- Clean the filter. Twist out the lower filter, rinse it, and clear the sump — watch for broken glass.
- Fix the drain hose loop. Straighten any kink and route the hose so it loops up high before it drops to the drain.
- Run the garbage disposal with water, and if it's a new disposal, confirm the knockout plug was removed.
- Clear the air gap. Pop the chrome cap and clean it out. Use only dishwasher detergent, never dish soap.
Where to stop: filter, hose, disposal, air gap, and a 30-second power-cycle are all safe. Don't remove the drain pump or open the control yourself, and mind the glass in the sump. If water still stands after these steps, it's the pump or the control — our job.

What is the drain hose high loop on a Maytag?
Maytag requires the drain hose to loop up higher than the inside of the tub before it drops to the sink drain or disposal. That high loop stops dirty sink water from siphoning back into the dishwasher and pooling in the tub. It's a very common cause of a "won't drain" complaint right after an install, or after the unit was pulled out and pushed back and the hose fell flat. If the hose runs low under the sink, re-routing it into a high loop is a safe, free fix — and a sink air gap does the same job automatically, which is why many California kitchens have one.
My Maytag drains but leaves water in the bottom — normal or a problem?
