01 · The short answer

Gas or electric decides it: a weak igniter, or a burned-out element.

Whirlpool builds a lot of both gas and electric ovens, and the type points at the fault. On a gas Whirlpool, the most common no-heat cause is a weak igniter — it still glows, but it can't draw enough current to open the safety gas valve, so the oven never lights. On an electric Whirlpool, it's usually a burned-out bake element. Both types can also be stopped by a thermal fuse blown during a self-clean cycle, a failed temperature sensor, or a control board that won't switch the heat on. The same parts apply to the Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana ovens on the Whirlpool platform. 02 · The gas igniter — glowing isn't the same as working

The counterintuitive #1 gas no-heat fault.

On a gas Whirlpool oven the igniter does two jobs at once: it gets hot enough to light the gas, and it draws enough electrical current to open the safety gas valve. Those are linked — the valve only opens once the igniter pulls its rated current, which is the design's way of making sure gas never releases without a flame to light it.

As an igniter ages, it weakens. Here's the trap: it can still glow bright orange while no longer drawing enough current to open the valve. So the oven looks like it's trying — you see the glow — but no gas ever releases and it stays cold. "The igniter glows, so it must be fine" is exactly backwards; a glowing-but-weak igniter is the most common gas-oven no-heat failure. A technician measures the actual current draw against spec and replaces the igniter. Never work on the igniter, valve, or gas line yourself.

03 · Why a Whirlpool oven won't heat

The causes, in the order our techs check them.

Weak gas igniter (gas models, most common)

Glows but can't draw enough current to open the gas valve, so the oven never lights. The classic gas no-heat fault. Tech measures current draw and replaces — gas side is pro-only.

Bake element (electric models)

Burned out — visible break, blister, or dark section. The electric equivalent. 240-volt tech replacement.

Thermal fuse (often after self-clean)

A safety that cuts power on overheat. Self-clean's extreme heat commonly blows it, leaving the oven dead or unable to heat. Inexpensive part, tech replacement — and we check why it blew.

Oven temperature sensor

Out of spec, it can stop the oven calling for heat or heat to the wrong temperature. Tech tests resistance against spec.

Control board / relay

If the board or a relay won't energize the igniter or element, the oven won't heat even with good parts. Tech diagnosis.

04 · What you can safely check

Rule these out before it's a repair.

  1. Confirm the mode — you're on Bake, not a delay-start, timer, or Sabbath mode, and no self-clean is still latched and cooling.
  2. Gas model: watch for the glow. When you call for heat, does the igniter glow? A glow with no flame points at a weak igniter — but don't touch it.
  3. Electric model: look at the bake element (cool) for a visible break, blister, or dark spot.
  4. Note the timing — if it died right after a self-clean, say so; that points at the thermal fuse.

Where to stop: checking the mode, watching the igniter glow, and a cool visual of an electric element are safe. The gas igniter and valve, the 240-volt element, the sensor, the thermal fuse, and the control board are our techs' work — and never touch the gas line.

The visual check is safe with the oven off and cool, but the element carries 240 volts, so testing and replacing it is a technician job. My Whirlpool oven died after a self-clean — is that related?

Very likely. Self-clean drives the oven extremely hot, and that heat commonly blows the thermal fuse — a safety that cuts power when temperatures get too high — leaving the oven dead or unable to heat afterward, and it can stress the control board too.
