Frigidaire Refrigerator Not Making Ice? Start With the Water
Most Frigidaire no-ice calls come down to the filter, supply, or freezer temp — and 'water dispenses but no ice' points at the ice-side valve. Here's what to check, plus two ice-bucket recalls worth looking up.

01 · The short answer
Work the water path first, then the valve.
When a Frigidaire refrigerator stops making ice, the fix is usually upstream of the ice maker. Check these in order: the water filter (replace every six months — a clogged one starves the maker), the supply valve and line behind the fridge, a frozen fill tube, the freezer temperature (it needs to be cold enough to cycle, around 0°F), and whether the ice maker is switched on with its feeler arm down. If water still dispenses fine but there's no ice, that's a Frigidaire tell — the dual-solenoid inlet valve has an ice side and a dispenser side that fail independently, and the ice side has gone. Filter and fill-tube fixes are yours to do; the inlet valve and module are a tech job. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair.
This page covers the ice maker built into your Frigidaire refrigerator. If yours is a standalone or undercounter ice machine, see the ice maker repair hub instead. For fridge ice makers of any brand, the refrigerator ice maker issues guide is the umbrella.
02 · Safety first — two Frigidaire recalls to check
Your ice bucket or level arm may be under recall.
Before you troubleshoot, it's worth a two-minute safety check. Frigidaire's parent company, Electrolux, has issued recalls where a plastic part inside the ice compartment can break into pieces that end up in the ice — a genuine choking and laceration hazard:
- 2022 recall — ice-level arm: roughly 370,000 refrigerators where the plastic ice-level (feeler) arm can break apart into the ice bucket.
- February 2024 recall — slim ice bucket: about 400,000 side-by-side refrigerators (sold from late 2015 through 2019) with slim ice buckets that can crack and shed plastic pieces into the ice.
If your Frigidaire is affected, the replacement part is free. Look up your model number on the official Electrolux recall site: icebucketrecall.com. This is a manufacturer safety recall administered with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission — checking it is free and, if your unit is covered, the fix costs nothing.
03 · Why a Frigidaire fridge ice maker stops
The causes, water-first.
Clogged water filter (most common)
A filter is good for about six months. Past that, flow drops and ice production tapers off and then stops — often with no other symptom. Replacing an overdue filter is the single most common fix.
Closed supply valve or kinked line
The water shutoff behind or under the fridge may be partly closed, and the line kinks when the fridge is pushed tight to the wall. No steady supply, no ice.
Frozen fill tube
The small tube that fills the ice mold can freeze into a plug, usually from a slow dribble that refreezes. Thawing it clears the block; if it keeps refreezing, the valve or freezer temperature is the real cause.
Dual-solenoid inlet valve — the "water but no ice" fault
Frigidaire's inlet valve has separate solenoids for the dispenser and the ice maker. When the ice-side solenoid fails, water still dispenses but the mold never fills. It's confirmed with a meter and replaced — a tech job.
Warm freezer, ice maker off, or module failure
A freezer that isn't cold enough won't cycle the maker; an accidentally raised feeler arm or an off switch stops it entirely; and a failed ice maker module (motor, thermostat, heater) won't harvest. The first two are homeowner checks; the module is a tech replacement.
04 · What you can safely check
Run these before calling anyone.
- Change the water filter if it's been more than six months. This alone restores a lot of Frigidaire ice makers.
- Check the supply. Confirm the shutoff valve is fully open and the line behind the fridge isn't kinked.
- Confirm the ice maker is on and the arm is down. A raised feeler arm or an off switch stops production.
- Verify the freezer temperature. It should be around 0°F. If the freezer is warm, fix that first.
- Thaw a frozen fill tube. Warm it gently (a hair dryer on low or a warm cloth). Power-cycle the fridge afterward and give it several hours for the first batch.
Where to stop: filter, supply, arm, temperature, fill-tube thaw, and a power-cycle reset are safe homeowner work and fix most no-ice calls. Do not replace the water inlet valve or open the ice maker module wiring — those are electrically live, plumbed-in tech jobs.
05 · When it's a tech job
Water confirmed, still no ice? Now it's a diagnostic.
When the filter is fresh, the supply is open, the freezer is cold, and there's still no ice, the fault is the dual-solenoid inlet valve or the ice maker module. Our techs verify the water path first, then test the ice-side solenoid and the module before quoting — so you replace the one part that actually failed. In LA's hard water, we also clear mineral scale off the inlet-valve screen and fill tube, which is a common no-cost flow fix. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with the repair.

06 · FAQ
Frigidaire ice maker not working: common questions.
Why is my Frigidaire refrigerator not making ice?
Work the water path first. The most common operator-fixable causes are a clogged water filter (replace every six months — low flow means little or no ice), a water supply valve that's partly closed or a kinked line behind the fridge, a frozen fill tube, a freezer that's too warm to cycle the maker, and the ice maker simply switched off or its feeler arm stuck up. If all of that checks out, the failed parts are usually the water inlet valve or the ice maker module. A useful Frigidaire tell: if water dispenses fine but there's no ice, the inlet valve has two separate solenoids and the ice side has failed while the dispenser side still works — that's a tech fix.
My Frigidaire dispenses water but won't make ice — why?
That points straight at the ice side of the water inlet valve. Frigidaire uses a dual-solenoid valve: one solenoid feeds the door dispenser, the other feeds the ice maker, and they fail independently. So water flowing to the dispenser tells you the supply and filter are fine, but the ice-maker solenoid isn't opening to fill the mold. First rule out a frozen fill tube (thaw it gently) and a warm freezer; if those are clear, the ice-side solenoid needs testing and replacement, which is a tech job — the valve is electrically live and plumbed in.
How do I reset a Frigidaire ice maker?
Start with the feeler (shut-off) arm: make sure it's down in the ON position, since a raised arm stops production. Then power-cycle the refrigerator — unplug it for a minute and restore power — which clears many transient ice-maker faults. Confirm the freezer is cold enough (around 0°F) and give it several hours to make the first batch. If the maker still won't cycle after that, the module or the inlet valve is the likely fault. Frigidaire doesn't publish a button-combo reset, so ignore online guides that claim a secret code.
Is my Frigidaire ice bucket part of a recall?
It may be — worth checking, because it's a safety issue. Frigidaire's parent, Electrolux, has issued recalls where the plastic ice-level arm or the slim ice bucket can break into pieces that end up in the ice, a choking and laceration hazard. A 2022 recall covered roughly 370,000 units for a breaking ice-level arm, and a February 2024 recall covered about 400,000 side-by-side refrigerators (sold from late 2015 to 2019) with slim ice buckets that can crack. Look up your model on the official Electrolux recall site — if it's covered, the replacement part is free. See the safety section on this page for the link.
Is it worth repairing a Frigidaire ice maker that won't work?
Usually yes. Most no-ice fixes are affordable — a filter, a fill-tube thaw, or the water inlet valve — against a refrigerator you're keeping. The ice maker module is a modest part too. Our techs verify the water path first (filter, supply, fill tube, temperature) so you're not paying to replace a valve when a clogged filter was starving the maker of water. In LA's hard water, mineral scale on the inlet-valve screen and fill tube is a common flow restriction, and clearing it is often the whole fix. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with the repair.
