When a Whirlpool refrigerator stops making ice, check the water path first: the filter (replace every six months — a clogged one starves the maker), the supply valve and line behind the fridge, a frozen fill tube, the freezer temperature (around 0°F to cycle), and whether the ice maker is on with its feeler arm down. If those are clear, the fault is the water inlet valve or the ice maker itself — and Whirlpool uses two designs, a modular crescent-mold type and an in-door optical (infrared) type, which fail and reset differently. 02 · Which Whirlpool ice maker do you have?
Modular or optical — they fail differently.
Modular crescent-mold (in the freezer)
A metal mold chills until a thermostat closes, then a heater frees the crescent cubes as the motor ejects them, and a wire feeler arm shuts it off when the bin is full. Its usual no-ice faults are the mold heater, the thermostat, or the drive motor. Reset by cycling the feeler arm (up to off, wait, down to on) to force a harvest, or with the reset button / a power-cycle.
In-door optical (infrared bin sensor)
Instead of a feeler arm, this type uses an infrared emitter and receiver to sense the ice level. When the optics fail or get blocked, the maker either overfills or stops. Reset by running the fridge's ice-maker diagnostic, then unplugging for about 10 seconds to reset the optics.
03 · Why a Whirlpool fridge ice maker stops
The causes, water-first.
Clogged water filter (most common)
Good for about six months; past that, flow drops and ice tapers off then stops. Replacing an overdue filter is the single most common fix.
Closed supply valve, kinked line, or frozen fill tube
A partly-closed shutoff, a line kinked against the wall, or a fill tube frozen into a plug all cut off water to the mold. Confirm the supply and thaw the fill tube gently.
Water inlet valve
When water is confirmed available but the mold never fills, the inlet valve solenoid has failed. It's tested with a meter and replaced — a tech job.
The ice maker itself — heater, thermostat, motor, or optics
On the modular type, a failed mold heater, thermostat, or motor stops the harvest. On the optical type, a failed emitter/receiver board misreads the bin. Both are tech diagnoses and replacements.
Warm freezer or ice maker off
A freezer that isn't cold enough won't cycle the maker, and an accidentally off switch or raised arm stops it. Both are quick homeowner checks.
04 · What you can safely check
Run these before calling anyone.
- Change the water filter if it's older than six months.
- Check the supply — shutoff valve fully open, line not kinked behind the fridge.
- Confirm the ice maker is on and the arm is down (or, on optical models, the sensor windows are clean and unblocked).
- Verify the freezer temperature is around 0°F.
- Reset it. Thaw a frozen fill tube, then use the reset button or power-cycle; on optical models, run the diagnostic and unplug ~10 seconds. Give it several hours for the first batch.
Where to stop: filter, supply, arm, temperature, fill-tube thaw, and a reset are safe homeowner work and fix most no-ice calls. Do not replace the water inlet valve or open the ice maker module or optics wiring — those are electrically live, plumbed-in tech jobs.

Water confirmed, still no ice? Now it's a diagnostic.
When the filter is fresh, the supply is open, the freezer is cold, and there's still no ice, the fault is the inlet valve or the ice maker — and which parts we test depends on whether yours is modular (heater, thermostat, motor) or optical (the sensor board). Why is my Whirlpool refrigerator not making ice?
Work the water path first. The common operator-fixable causes are a clogged water filter (replace every six months), a supply valve that's partly closed or a kinked line, a frozen fill tube, a freezer that's too warm to cycle (it needs to be around 0°F), and the ice maker being switched off or its feeler arm stuck up. How do I reset a Whirlpool ice maker?
